you you you you you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] good morning and welcome to the 2019 university of toledo college medicine white coat ceremony the entering class medical students has achieved extraordinary academic success in order to gain acceptance to medical school academic excellence is not enough however to make a caring doctor who has a genuine concern for his and her patients this is why at the University of Toledo MD program we have a holistic admissions process that evaluates applicants based not only on their academic credentials but also on their personal qualities things like values contributions outside the classroom a major reason that these students are here at the University of Toledo college of medicine and life sciences is because they have demonstrated the personal values and humanistic properties that are desired in physicians characteristics such as honesty and integrity compassion and empathy altruism putting the interest of others before themselves respect for others and dedication to service like learning professional development is a lifelong process we've started to build upon these students innate humanistic abilities during this week's orientation the culmination of orientation and the start of the new academic year is today's white coat ceremony students you can smile this is a great day the white coat ceremony is a symbolic one to emphasize that you're not just embarking on another educational endeavor you're entering what is arguably the noblest of professions where your true success will not be judged on grades and test scores but on how will you serve your fellow human the white coat ceremony is a unique opportunity for you as beginning medical students to bond with your fellow classmates while celebrating your choice of a career in medicine the white coat is a mantle of the profession of Medicine and symbolizes the compassion that your future patients will expect from you at this time is my honor and privilege to introduce dr. Christopher Cooper Dean of the college of medicine and life sciences dr. Cooper [Applause] good morning we're really glad to have all of you with us today on behalf of the University of Toledo I'd like to extend my welcome our welcome to the incoming class of medical students and to the family and friends who are here with you to the students we are so pleased that you've decided to enter the profession of medicine and have chosen the University of Toledo for your medical education for those in the audience the start of a new academic year is a time of enthusiasm especially for this group there's a sense of accomplishment and there's been a lot of energy this week so I want to let you know that we the faculty and staff the administration of the University of Toledo we share your excitement and energy as you embark on this journey to fulfill your dreams of becoming a physician so to the members of the audience let me tell you a little bit about this class of 2023 there are 175 students roughly half were men and half are women they were selected from five thousand three hundred and ninety five applications [Applause] as they've already heard for me once this week they're here for a reason we don't make a mistake these young men and women have earned their place in this class they come from across our country Hawaii on the west New York on the east and many in between three quarters of you are from the state of Ohio we are a state school and about a third are from Northwest Ohio you come from a variety of universities and colleges across our region and across our nation academically these students are very well prepared their average GPA is about a 3.7 imagine that the average half are better than that their average MCAT score is 509 which puts them in the top 20% nationally 33 have master's degrees and two have already earned their PhD you range from 20 at the youngest to 44 at the oldest and you're you are joining the University of Toledo's College of Medicine at a very exciting time two years ago we implemented a new curriculum a curriculum that we'd spent several years designing and implementing this new curriculum brings our students into clinical practice in their very first year so yes very soon you'll be using those white coats with people we also implemented a number of other educational innovations and the first students from the new curriculum have already entered their clinical rotations and are doing spectacularly well so this is a great time to be a UT college of medicine students in addition as you saw in the video just a few moments ago our students are doing very well with the residency match and their transition into clinical practice this past spring we had the best match in several decades our students matched into many excellent and competitive Pro rooms across our nation our match rate was well better than the national average and importantly many of our students are choosing to stay at the University of Toledo to join our high quality residency programs in addition the College of Medicine has many other opportunities available to you some of you will pursue a joint MD JD program to get both your law degree and your medical degree others have already signed up for the MD ph.d program to be both a Doctor of Science and a doctor of medicine some will join the MD MBA program and get a business degree and others will get a public health degree during their time in the College of Medicine there are lots of opportunities for you most importantly our College Medicine is a family of fully committed faculty staff and students who are here to help you achieve your full potential whatever that might be so congratulations and welcome to all of you now it's my distinct pleasure to introduce my friend dr. Michael McCrea who is president of the College of Medicine and life sciences alumni affiliate dr. McCrae [Applause] good morning everybody so oh you didn't have to reply but thank you so Chris dr. Cooper said I'm president the Alumni Association and 19 years ago I was down there so of course that means next year's 20 so I think this is the this is the third year that I've been able to come and speak to this today and it's important I actually was supposed to be working this morning clinically I'm an emergency physician and I asked one of my partner's to switch shifts with me I'm working this afternoon so that I could be here today because this means something but last year when I spoke I said I I think that maybe it means more for the people in the back right for your parents and your significant others because you know their baby's starting medical school and so last night I was talking with my mom and she asked what I had today in this weekend and I said what you know this morning at the UT white coat ceremony for the first years and she said I remember your white coat ceremony said great she's gonna give me something good I can say this morning and I said what do you remember mom and she said well I remember I wore a nice suit cuz it was a big day good okay anything else well I had all kinds of construction driving home on the Turnpike that that makes sense anything about the ceremony no well there goes that theory so jokes aside this is a big deal someday you will look back on this and realize that today is when it started today is when you became a medical student right so when you put on your coat when you see patients in the office or in the hospital or wherever you work it started today so on behalf of our Alumni Association who purchase your white coats and your stethoscope for you welcome to medical school [Applause] part of the tradition of the white coat ceremony is to present gifts to the incoming class to remind you of the responsibilities of the profession you have chosen for your life's work as it just heard from dr. McCrae the University of Toledo College of Medicine the life sciences alumni affiliate has generously provided the white coats for each student in addition each coat has a gold appel pin with a stethoscope just like the one engraved with a heart just like the one on the logo at the front of the program the pins are a gift from the Arnold P gold foundation a public foundation dedicated to fostering humanism in medicine at this time I will call each student's name and have you come forward to the center of the stage while you will be cloaked with your first white coat dr. De Palma Condon assistant dean for student affairs dr. coral mattes senior associate dean for medical education and dr. McKray will cloak the entering students there's a professional photographer who will then take an individual photo of each student with dr. call upon fourth-year student pallavi Padilla University Toledo College of Medicine chapter of the gold humanism Honor Society who will lead the first-year class in the recitation of the medical student pledge of ethics [Applause] with the class of 2023 please stand please join us in reciting the medical student pledge of ethics found in your program I publicly acknowledge and accept the privileges and responsibilities given to me today as a physician in training and dedicate myself to provide care in those in need I will approach all aspects of my education with honesty and integrity embracing opportunities to learn from patients teachers and colleagues I will always maintain the highest standards of Professional Conduct I will certify only that which I have prepare fide and I will neither receive nor give unauthorized assistance on examinations I will value the knowledge and wisdom of the physicians who have preceded me I will recognize my weaknesses and strengths and strive to develop those qualities that will earn the respect of my patients my colleagues my family and myself I will respect the humanity rights and decisions of all patients and will attend to them with compassion and without bias I will maintain patient confidentiality and be tactful in my words and actions I will value the diversity of patients experiences cultures and beliefs because it enhances my ability to care for them and enriches my education I will not forget that there is an science and that warmth sympathy and understanding are integral to patient care art to medicine as well as to earn the trust my patients place in me and the respect that society places upon my profession I will recognize the privileges afforded to me as a physician in training and promise not to abuse them even as a student I have a responsibility to improve the standard of Health in my community to increase access to care for the underserved and to advance medical knowledge as I accept these new responsibilities I will not forget the importance of my own health and well-being I will continue to value my relations with those who have supported me in the past and those who will share in my future knowing my own limitations and those of medicine I commit myself to a lifelong journey of learning how to cure relieve and comfort with humility and compassion I make these promises solemnly freely and upon my honor [Applause] students you can be seated wow you guys look really official family and friends what do you think let's give him a round of applause [Applause] you guys have a real cheering section so we've been witness to a remarkable event 175 women and men have committed themselves to a special growth of a special journey of growth and discovery they've committed to becoming a physician and the symbol of that is the fact that you put on a white coat if you look a little different than your clean white coats the question is are you different and have you changed so we've begun this change with the promise sometimes people will make promises to themselves or to some of they care about or to a roomful of people well just a few moments ago you all made a promise upon your oath I promise upon your oath in front of all these witnesses and that oath speaks of accepting privileges you will have certain privileges that other people don't have and you'll also have with that responsibilities you spoke of honesty and integrity humility and compassion and that you're going to recognize your strengths and weaknesses and develop qualities that will earn the respect of others your promise is to all of those here with you in the room today and also to the folks who have mentored you to your teachers and to the communities in which you all Tomita our main mission is to improve the health of the communities and region we serve and we take that commitment very seriously most importantly though your commitment is to the patients that will rely on you and trust in you with their care and that will begin very soon and during this journey there will be challenges the next few years you're going to work harder than you think possible moms and dads loved ones their first semester is about 29 credit hours and normal college students about 15 there is a lot of work to do and you will live with decisions difficult decisions that you'll need to make sometimes your patience lives will depend on the decisions you make to measure up to the promise will not be easy but what we know clearly is that for you to earn a spot in one of those seats today with the new white coat you aren't looking for easy so I want to thank you for the promise to join the journey to become a physician this is the celebration of the beginning this is the beginning if any of you run that 26 mile race called a marathon you understand that there's balloons and cheering and bands at the beginning of the race that have very little to do with completing the race and that's what today is the bands and the balloons really what the bands and the balloons celebrate is the commitment to run the race and the preparation that led to the journey so with that I wish to congratulate all of the incoming students and your family and friends on your magnificent achievements and on walking the path that got you here and that will take you forward so today together we begin a new page in our lives you are the best you are the brightest you are well-prepared for the quest ahead you're ready our since you're welcome and warmest congratulations and welcome to our family in the College of
