is a work of art the movie takes place over the course of one day the day George decides to kill himself today I have decided will be different facing his own suicide George slowly begins to see the world in a more wondrous light what was in the scallop is purple Colin Firth's performance is captivating and earned him his first Oscar nomination jim was not a substitute for anything and Stan and there is no substitute for Jim anywhere and by the way what is so real about your relations every Richard he left you after nine years Jim and I were together for 16 years and if he had no time we'd still be together the head is not real about that welcome Best Actor nominee Colin / [Applause] thank you you should be so proud of yourself uh yes listen are you are you really i am i'm very proud of tom this was a rather lonely experience for an actor in a way in my department because you know a lot of the film is spent yeah alone and the days when I had the brilliant help of julianne moore on a call to matthew goode it was a very easy ride yeah but of course then you become very intimate with your director yes this is very very personal story is very personal to Tom could we go back to that the clip guys that cuz i was telling the audience when I first came out here that seemed that we just ran with you sitting in the chair when you get the phone call and it's just really I could cry thinking about it because when I saw it for the first time I stood up and cheered cuz I thought that is brilliant I don't know where you went I don't know how you did it I don't know how many takes it took you to do that but that is brilliant that is what acting is all about congratulate it was shot in 21 days the entire film Wow and then what Tom did and this is his brilliance he was set a mood in motion yeah but then he got out of the room everyone was watching the monitor in the next room so it was just a camera with an operator and a microphone and he just didn't say cut you know there's nothing on the page except the dialogue I put the phone down yeah and he just let it roll for I think it's about 11 minutes really yeah and so you shot it for the different close up and then the widest I just didn't he just did that one shot three times then came in for a side shot really that and he preferred spending time letting my imagination take over and develop than in editorializing it himself that is amazing although he you know he sculpted it in the cutting room yeah uh and he did that brilliantly I heard though is this true that you had that you were gonna send an email early on and back out of this film the fridge guy came I did I wrote the email i still have it in my outbox i think i'll show it to him one day you had read the script obviously yes there was i was fascinated by tom I mean it's not a man you easily bet against yeah you know he's everything he's touched his turn to gold really and I just thought I didn't I didn't want to disappoint him this was a clearly very personal project they put squarely on my shoulders it was all sorts of reasons in my life when I thought I'd tie you know I was fatigued I've been working a lot and I thought I'd I wouldn't go there and then I suddenly thought what an incredible leap into the unknown this will be there are so many improbable things here it's not a conventional story no um it deals with so many human issues and you were just looking at the skirt at the words on the page you are not you know I mean he hadn't put in the deliciousness yet day was there were a lot of empty spaces yes on that ship which would be in it would his deliciousness would have to fill yeah um but you know with ya I didn't press send the doorbell rang a guy came to fix my refrigerator and that was enough time for me to reconsider it was just that pause before pressing send which can prove you're ugly it's like the refrigerator man is like the moment before George pulls off when the student I forgot his name leaned into the window and he says I think you need a friend that's right wait just before George that's right laughs and he in just that moment it's like an angel in a way you know Kandi's like it one of the things yeah this could be this story when people take you know it is about loss and it's it's about a man contemplating the end of his own life yeah and he's given up on the future and in a way that could sound like a depressing scenario but it's all about falling in love with life again yes and one of the things it sounds like an almost in absurdity think of in terms of its subject matter is it's a wonderful life yes ma'am Joe it couldn't be more different yeah right you know Jimmy Stewart actually gets an angel and takes him through his past but all the people were angels just all the people throughout the day and what's so fascinating I want to talk to Tom Ford in a moment about is do you have to get to the end in order to become that awakened in conscious well playing him um has given me a real sense of what I have to be grateful for my own life you know that there's not at the present moment for a start which is really all we have yes something to be absolutely be cherished um and although George is so sad the world that is presented to him is so incredibly beautiful that I think that it I think that's what has has kind of remained like a fragrance really yeah for me like a Tom Ford fragrance yeah yeah yeah okay I'll be right back with director Tom Ford we'll be right back they tried to cut me off a couple of times I was like I'm not done I was afraid that that microphone was gonna go on the ground and I've got to be like it i just wanted then you walked up yo just gave me tissue yeah and I'm thinking what does he think I'm gonna cry now and she said giving that gum giving that gum good time to me Kodak for after Oscar party we're doing it again this year you'll see that Monday March a Best Actor nominee Colin Bertha's hear his new film which you must see it is a it is a sensual delight it's it's delicious isn't it it's you want to spoon it a single man was directed produced and paid for by fashion mogul Tom Ford let's take a look at tom those who dope a shin know the name Tom Ford he is the man who reinvented Gucci his collections were hot and his ad campaigns provocative during his tenure reign as creative director Gucci became one of the most profitable luxury brands in the world five years ago Tom launched his own label today there are 21 Tom Ford stores around the globe making him fashions billion dollar man last year he made the leap from fashion to film with his directorial debut of a single man and it's no surprise that critics have said it's doubtful you will see a more aesthetically a resting film this year
