Colin and Jennifer on the Set, about Darcy and Elizabeth/The Piano Scene

[Music] Darcie for example in the book is somebody that we don't understand at all at the beginning of the book he's described as a proud disagreeable man and that's virtually all you get he's obviously very interested in Elizabeth because he talks mostly to her but then by the end of the book we realize a lot of things about him and the actor has somehow got to give a sort of inkling he's got to understand all this so he can't play the product he mustn't give away too much about Darcy is going to be a sympathetic character at the beginning but he's got a plan in such a way so that he's not just a really nasty person who turns into a really nice person he's somebody who's capable of being really nice all along but various circumstances in his life have turned him into a rather withdrawn and haughty person yeah I think that he there is a problem with with his attractiveness I think that he there's very little about in which which is appealing he's utterly and unreasonably dismissive of almost everybody he meets you know it's up to other people whether they find that fascinating about him or not I think if we're one way to meet Darcy in real life I think you take against him pretty quickly I must hates you standing another stupid man come much better delicacy I certainly shall not assembly such as this being supported [Music] your sisters are engaged at present perfectly well it would be a punishment to me to stand up with any other king I see Elizabeth as independent witty she's got a wonderful sense of humor great intelligence and she thinks her integrity is perfect she does have integrity she's just a bit misguided only on the prejudice bit I don't think she would have developed the prejudice against him quite as violently hadn't had not her pride been hurt in fact Jennifer who who plays Elizabeth found this in the playing of it that she's quite prepared to be amused by Darcy's arrogance even when her mother slighted but when she herself gets slighted it becomes a sort of obsession I think she is tolerable which is not handsome enough to tempt me Bingley I'm in no humour to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men go back to your partner enjoy the smiles of wasting your time [Music] I think Darcy is arguably the most complicated character he's terribly unpredictable and and manifests himself very differently all the time he can be extremely gracious one minute and then literally on six months it'll suddenly shut down again and he can be utterly baffling and I think he probably makes the biggest journey of any of the characters sometimes of change well Lizzie's obviously always a tap attracted to him in some way because he's so important to her she cares what he thinks and she wouldn't take him on as a sort of sparring partner if she weren't impressed by him and by his presence even though she does think it's ridiculous so there's always an attraction there it's just that it's the flip side so she looks over towards him and he looks over towards her and and it's the timing of the shots between the two of them too long in either way would have made it self-conscious but it's not [Music] as far as music concerned what you do in a sense is provide something which is not said or seen in terms of the visual action but something more abstract which is thought and hinted at now you can ruin it by making it too strong too obvious but you can help it by just in some mysterious way keep it going in a romantic sense we hear Georgiana playing and the music segues into a love theme which takes over [Music]
