Coffee and Crime Time: Tiger King Edition

most famous documentary in history Tiger king I did not want to watch this series guys I put it off for over a month everybody was talking about it everybody was telling me to watch it and I put it off because I thought it would be stupid and it was stupid but it was also interesting shocking and at times hilarious as far as true crime documentaries go this one had it all there's at least five different crimes we could talk about in connection with the people that are involved in that documentary there's so much to unpack and investigate so I can make this a small series if you want because we obviously we can't get to everything in one episode today we're going to examine the two main characters Joe exotic and Carol Baskin so we can see who they were before they became the most infamous arch enemies of our quarantine to lives we'll see how their separate paths eventually merged and what happened to them once the cameras turned off but there are other figures in the statue series that are also interesting in scandalous the two that come to my mind are de Cantel who I'm pretty sure is running some sort of Manson ask sex cult and Jeff Lowe who seems to have a really sketchy past and the whole time I'm watching Tiger King I am wondering I'm questioning things you know because they show us these characters as they are at this point and it progresses a little bit you know they go through some years together but I'm so curious always about what people's childhoods were like what their backgrounds were like where they came from how they ended up where they are now so of course after I finished Tiger King I had to look into the backgrounds of almost everybody on this show and I got a lot of dirt I got a lot of tea and I want to share it with you now um remember this is gonna be a little bit of a more lighthearted video but in the end there were crimes committed here and there's crimes against humans and animals I do not condone any violence against your fellow human or ever any animal ever I mean if you want to get in a fistfight with your brother at a bar because he said something about your wife and you want to give them a bloody nose you know that's between you guys but you should never ever lay your hands on an animal ever because they are completely innocent and wonderful creatures and I love them most of you who have been watching me for a while and I've seen my vlogs and things you guys know I hate zoos I've never liked zoos and people have made fun of me for years about it cuz I refuse to go to zoos I have never brought ate into a zoo I've never brought Bala to zoom when Nev was younger I brought her to the zoo a couple of times which is what caused my hatred for the zoo I just could not imagine how those animals could be happy in their circumstances and that's just my opinion you may feel completely different I don't want to shame you if you like zoos you you do you go ahead and like zoos and some zoos are really great some zoos do take care of their animals the only problem is it's really difficult to distinguish which ones are taking care of the animals and which ones aren't so in my opinion it should kind of be a hard and fast rule that they just shouldn't exist to protect the animals but you know what do I know the whole time I was watching the show I found myself wondering about Kjell exotic where this guy come from what got him into the whole exotic animals game why is his eyebrow ring in his eyelid now I have to believe that the majority of the people in the world have seen this show already but if you haven't seen it you're planning on watching it first of all I definitely suggest you do because like like you I was a skeptic and I held back and now I want to watch it all over again because it was just such a crazy ride but if you haven't seen it there are gonna be some spoilers in here spoiler alert Boop I don't know is that what happens that's what we just did as always to understand what happened at the end we have to go back to the beginning and there are very few people whose backgrounds interested me as much as Joe exotic Joe exotic was born Joseph Sri Vogel on March 14th 1963 in Kansas now his parents were wealthy farmers and he was one of five siblings although the family was pretty much well-off Joe claims that they were never spoiled or handed anything that they worked really hard even as kids in fact he said he believed his parents started a family and had kids specifically to have farmhands his parents were stoic German people and he says he can't remember a time when anyone said I love you to anyone else in that household so it wasn't like a very affectionate family dynamic it wasn't an affectionate loving family life when he was five years old Joe claims he was sexually assaulted by an older boy in his own home repeatedly according to Joe this boy cornered him in the bathroom and opened a drawer in the bathroom vanity to jam the bathroom door shut essentially now when Joe's father who was a Korean War vet changed jobs from farming to raising resources he moved the family from Kansas to Wyoming when Joe was about 14 and then they moved again to Pilot Point Texas where they lived on a large ranch in an 8 bedroom home the only one of Joe's siblings that he was close to was his older brother girlthe which sounds like a name from The Witcher I don't know if I said it right but that's how I've heard it pronounced girl'd it sounds like The Witcher the two brothers shared a love of animals according to the about Us section on the GW Zoo web site growled loved all animals and life and his dream was to go to a jungle to see all the magnificent animals running wild and free growled and Joe liked to watch nature shows together and Joe would bring home small animals like raccoons and ferrets while he was participating in the Future Farmers of America program to show his brother and to care for them it's a really sad part of the whole story because if you've seen Tiger King and you know how it ends it's a bit jarring to know that Joe started out in life genuinely loving animals taking care of them and fighting for conservationism Joe's high school years were erratic since his family did move so much but he also didn't have a really great experience with the other students there aren't many people who remember him from high school but what is known is that Joe was often bullied by the jacks and the popular kids because Joe seemed to prefer the friendship of his female classmates so he would get teased for being one of the girls Joe graduated from high school in 1982 and in what I believe is a very little-known fact he became an East Val police officer I never knew Joe Howe exotic had been a police officer now this was a small department with very few employees in an area with you know little or no criminal activity and at the age of 19 Joe was promoted to chief of police it was around this time though that one of his siblings outed a Joe to his parents as gay from the show we know Joe when we meet him he's an openly gay man and he seems to be you know very proud of this he uses it to his advantage almost kind of creating a brand he's a gay gun-toting cowboy but he had been struggling with his sexuality from a young age and he hadn't really figured out how to break it to his parents yet afraid that they wouldn't accept him his fears were realized when his parents were both shocked and disappointed by his sexuality and his father made him shake his hand and promise not to attend his funeral now when Joe tells this story in tiger King I get the impression that he had told that story a lot you know it's kind of one of those stories that he keeps in his repertoire because Joe is a storyteller he's a performer he loves dramatic effect and I got the impression like Joe's told this story a lot it sounds rehearsed almost almost as if there's really no emotion behind anymore which I'm sure there obviously was at one point like that obviously to be a very devastating part of his life as well we'll find out that it was but when he tells it on the show it's almost just like he's robotically repeating it and I think he kind of took that that part of his life that had hurt him and caused him a lot of pain and used it to flesh out this character he would become but what happened to Joe with his parents when one of his brothers completely callously and horribly just you know outed him and that bothers me when that happens you know you can think whatever you want about Joe exotic or Caryl Baskin you know we're on Team nobody at this point because there are horrible people but in every situation every day of the week it's 100% wrong to out someone when they have not chosen to do that yet their sexuality is their life and their business unless they choose to bring people in on that and Joe hadn't chosen to do that yet he was obviously waiting for the right time he was trying to find the right words and he may never have found the right time or the right words but that was up to him so what happened with his parents at Broad Joe to a very dark place and he attempted to take his own life shortly after by driving his police cruiser into a concrete bridge embankment at high speed nearly going over the bridge he survived but he was injured pretty badly and he moved to West Palm Beach Florida where he recovered through months of physical therapy in Florida he began living with a boyfriend and working at a pet store but his neighbor at that time he worked at a nearby exotic animal park and the neighbor would sometimes bring home baby lions and monkeys and Joe became just obsessed with these animals and this is where his interest and love and obsession in these exotic animals starts Joe got really attached to these little monkeys and lions and the neighbor would let him play with them and feed them from a bottle and it was really at this time that Joe narrowed it down his you know general love of animals to specifically loving exotic animals and I mean who wouldn't just be over the moon to feed a baby monkey or a baby lion from a bottle and play with them and just hang out with them but most of us would enjoy the variants and you know take it for as long as we had it but we wouldn't say like let's open an exotic animal zoo right I think most of us wouldn't do that at this point Joe moved back to Texas and he began working as a security guard at the roundup saloon which was a gay cowboy bar it was here in 1986 23 year-old Joe met the man who would become his first of five husbands now in the show they don't tell us about all these husband's you know we know about John we know about Travis we know about the new on Dylan but in then they make mention a little bit of his past relationships but they don't really go into it so I'm gonna do that now his first husband was 19 year old Bryan Ryan and Joe became inseparable from this young man it's reported that they even resembled each other they were both sporting mullets horseshoe moustaches and they wore matching jeans and boots they moved into a trailer in Arlington with a group of poodles that they basically treated like children the two tied the knot in a marriage ceremony at the roundup saloon even though at that time gay marriage was not legally accepted in the US this same year Joe his brother growled and Bryan opened a pet store in Arlington where they sold small creatures like reptiles fish and ferrets they made extra money on the side from selling cat playgrounds and dog houses that Geralt built using materials found in dumpsters and garbage cans I really got the impression from girl-girl garage geralt I feel so bad I don't know how to pronounce his name correctly ger wolde Gerald I'm gonna say Gerald it's like Harold with a g' gerald okay so Geralt I get the impression from him that he was an industrious kind of person and we know that Joe exotic for all his shortcomings would later go on to be an incredibly hard-working person right he would work Dan day out night and day never tired never stopped he really wanted to build something and I think that his substance abuse problems most likely fueled his ability to stay up all the time and have all this energy but regardless inside that motivation was there and I think that comes from the fact that they were raised by these extremely hard-working no-nonsense parents who had money but did not spoil their kids the extra income the they got from these pet playgrounds and dog houses it allowed them to expand the offerings at the pet store and assume they were bringing in smaller exotic pets like armadillos and four-eyed possums I've never heard of a four-eyed opossum before so obviously I was intrigued and I looked it up and I'm gonna tell you about them in case anyone else is interested the grey four-eyed opossum is a possum species found in Central and South America they don't actually have four eyes and it looks like this thing would rip your head off if you got close enough right in some of these pictures it's baring its teeth it looks like it's ready to spring in you and just eat your entire face off they got this four-eyed named because of the white or cream colored spots that are above each eye which gives the appearance of having a four eyes now average adult sizes range from about 16 to 20 inches and in captivity they only live for about four years what's pretty messed up though is one of the first searches they came up while I was looking into these little animals was four eyed possums for sale easy financing is available I know we all want unique pets but it's getting kind of ridiculous anyways Joe Gerald Brian these guys were happy they were doing what they loved expanding their business and they were living a pretty good life when tragedy struck in October of 1997 Gerald was killed when he was hit by a drunk driver outside of Dallas Joe's life changed after the loss of his brother he didn't want to be in Texas anymore but he did want to do something to honor geralt memory the family had won a hundred and forty thousand dollars in a lawsuit after his death and they were planning to build a soccer field and named it after him but Joe had a better idea he convinced them to let him use the money to purchase 16 acres of land in Wynnewood Oklahoma Joe poured the concrete for the sidewalks himself and he started out with nine cages in what he would call the Gerald Wayne exotic animal Memorial Park also known as the GW Zoo it officially opened two years to the day after gerelds death now it was advertised as an animal sanctuary which is what it sounds like it's a place where animals are brought to live and be cared for until the event of their natural deaths so technically you wouldn't be seeking out an to place here or breeding animals to create more animals to have there it would strictly be a place for animals who have been displaced or mistreated to live where they could be taken care of and protected when word got out people started sending Joe with their animals the first two zoo occupants were animals that had belonged to Gerald a deer and a buffalo after that they acquired a mountain lion and a bear and in the year 2000 Joe took in his first Tigers task and tickles now these Tigers had been found in the yard of an abandoned house and within no time Tass gave birth to tiger cubs which Joe and his husband Brian cared for in their own home located on the zoo grounds Joe and Brian ran the zoo together and once again they were copacetic things were great they were happy but then tragedy struck once more Brian began to get very sick and in 2000 Joe was trying to get his husband into his truck so he could bring him home where Brian could die in peace surrounded by family when Brian took his last breath he passed away due to an hiv-related infection and according to New York magazine Joe screamed loud enough to make your ears ring Brian's funeral was held at the zoo and Joe was a mess in four years time he'd lost the two people who were the most important him in the whole world really the only two people that he had and the reality was he was now very much alone his solitude wouldn't last very long however because within a year Jill was married again 24 year-old Geoffrey Charles heart pence aka JC was also an industrious sort of man he had some experience with planning and putting on events and together he and Joe expanded the zoo business to take it on their road they traveled around with baby animals for kids to Pat while they learned about animal conservation and watched Joe attempt to do magic tricks with them so it was kind of this circus zoo magic show combination road act and at this point Joe went by many stage names but the one that stuck was Joe exotic as the business expanded and Joe began looking for extra hands to help out with the traveling show and at the zoo his relationship with JC was deteriorating now it's reported that JC was an advocate for building more open enclosures so that the animals would have space to run in Rome but Joe was more interested with purchasing as many animals as possible with the intention to breed them and make money off the sale of the babies they began to regularly butt heads on this topic and one day in 2003 JC went into the office and he found a picture on his desk it was a picture of the largest lion at the zoo named Goliath and Goliath in this picture is like baring his teeth angrily over his dinner and over the meats that Goliath was about to eat the words Jaycees remains were typed and on an attached post-it note Joe had written if you don't get your together this is gonna be your reality obviously JC didn't like this and JC had his own demons with drugs and alcohol arguably he could make some spontaneous and dumb decisions so he decided to handle this lover's quarrel by placing two loaded guns in the face of his husband while he was sleeping when Joe woke up staring down the barrel of these two guns JC told him I want out are we clear now Joe managed to talk JC into putting the guns down and then he called the police JC was arrested and escorted off the property never to return but this is not where JC's story ends on February 21st in 2014 57 year old Curtis Shelton was found shot to death in his Nashville Kansas home JC heart pence and another man Dean Cowell's were arrested and charged for this murder according to court documents on the evening of February 19th JC and Dean were drinking in a trailer owned by the oil drilling company that all three of these men worked for Dean cows called Curtis angry because Curtis son had borrowed a truck that belonged to the oil wringing company and he'd failed to bring it back when he was supposed to angry words were exchanged between all three of them and then JC and Dean decided to go to curtis's house which was 45 minutes away to get the truck back before they started on their journey however they borrowed a gun from another co-worker and stopped at the liquor store for more booze allegedly when they got there Dean went running into the house ahead of JC and when JC finally got in he saw Dean on top of Curtis hitting him and yelling at him so JC says he pulled Dean off but then you saw Curtis reaching for his gun on the bedside table and in a split-second decision JC pulled his gun and shot the man twice JC heart pence was sentenced to life in prison which is where he is now so we have a Joe exotics of first marriage his longest relationship to date it seems who dies you know tragically and then his second husband they get into it Joe threatens him JC threatens Joe back and eventually JC goes to prison for an unrelated murder but still it's just crazy and it gets crazier right as things were ending with JC Joe was getting closer to a new employee he had hired to help him out at the zoo a man we all know and love John Finley 19 year old John had been hired in the summer of 2003 and within a month Joe had moved him into the house and they were living together now John claims before he met Joe he'd only dated women and that Joe exotic was his first male lover this has been heavily debated and I'm not sure why it doesn't really matter to me what someone's sexuality is it's very possible john has an interest in both men and women well it's not a huge factor in this case in my opinion the bigger factor is that it seems joe is able to convince these men to be with him and stay with him despite living and working and existing in not the best conditions because he buys them whatever they want so he pretty much you know gives them gifts and keeps them happy and he also provides them with copious amounts of drugs like marijuana and meth allegedly so the whole idea here to me it's not is John Finley gay or is Travis gay it's more were these people under the influence of drugs and alcohol and kind of capped in a mindless pacified sort of condition in order to keep them with him that's the bigger issue so I don't know why people are focusing on John's sexuality and people are giving him crap like in interviews you know it's just ridiculous it doesn't matter and it's not your business as Joe's reputation grew and of course it did because he was that kind of outlandish personality so did his list of enemies mostly coming from animal rights communities his first encounter with the law after starting the zoo was in 1999 all the park was still under construction Joe was transporting a flock of emus from red oak Texas to Oklahoma but as he was trying to load them up some of them escaped and began running towards the freeway now these poor amuse had been neglected they were starving but Joe couldn't have them obviously running into traffic and causing a car accident because he would be responsible for that car accident because the emus were in his care so he shot at least six of them before they could make it to the freeway which enraged local law enforcement in the SPCA he was hit with animal cruelty charges but a grand jury dismissed the case in 2004 The Oklahoman published an article about a lion cub named angel that had been born at Joe's zoo apparently she had been born crippled and it was thought to have been a result of inbreeding or improper nutrition in the mother or both quoted in that article was a woman named Carol Baskin saying no legitimate animal sanctuary would allow this to happen and so began the lifelong feud between Joe attic and Carol Baskin in 2006 the US Department of Agriculture suspended Joe's license for two weeks and fined him $25,000 for violations including but not limited to failure to provide adequate veterinary care to the animals and failure to remove feces from the cages properly also in 2006 PETA published an expose on Jonah's park alleging his mistreatment of the animals they had a video which looked to be a kind of undercover like video recorded in hidden kind of thing and this showed employees that we're talking about how the animals had irregular feeding schedules they even showed the employees swatting at the animals and in one case a tire being struck by the bottom a rifle now don't get me started on PETA when it comes to protecting animals PETA is not like the end-all-be-all they're not the most legitimate organization allegedly they spend their time getting upset about things that don't matter like fishing and catching bugs in Animal Crossing a video game which is clearly not real life in any way shape or form and they also have a long history of euthanizing a big percentage of the animals that they accept and do shelters in the best case scenario PETA is incredibly hypocritical but that's a talk for another day allegedly don't come for me PETA I know you guys like to do that the GW zoo was a investigated by local and federal law enforcement but no charges were filed at this time Joe had over 1000 animals on a 16 acre property so as you can imagine it was a tight fit the business which was supposedly not for profit was also making a pretty good amount of money when azuz listed as a non-profit company the proceeds they make are supposed to be donated to you know animal conservation putting it back for the animals now I obviously don't have access to Joe exotics finances or tax records so I have no idea if that happened or what percentage of his proceeds he donated that but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say probably not a lot allegedly however Joe also had other ways to make money including a very profitable gift shop a bar he opened and called Safari bar which was just two miles away from the park and his pizza shop on the property that he called suitors you remember suitors from the documentary right he was making the pizzas using the expired food products that he got from the Walmart trucks the same expired food he was feeding to his staff and his animals I mean Joe's like trying to explain this in the documentary he says oh you know this isn't expired food this is food that people bring up to the register and then they don't want me put back but the Walmart people can't restock it so it just goes to waste there is no way in hell that all the Walmarts in Oklahoma would have that many people bringing meat and hot dogs and things up to the counter and then being like oh I've changed my mind and they would have enough to bring Joe an entire truckload of food some of that food probably most of it was expired and getting thrown out and he fed this to his animals even though he didn't feed enough of it to his animals because in my opinion those poor animals were starving all the time and he fed it to his staff and he put it on pizzas and then sold the pizzas and made a profit from it so I may never eat at another lake restaurant again because I just imagined that this probably happens a lot more than we even know but on Yelp there's one review for this pizza place and I'm gonna read it to you just for fun the Yelp review says I had the Don Luis wasn't that good the Baroni resembled what one would get in a lunchable from walmart the other meet Italian sausage I think was not recognizable by sight nor palate staff were overly friendly yet suspicious seems they were snickering every time I took a bite of pizza Tigers were neat this review was posted 11 days ago so I'm sure it's a joke review especially considering the pizza was called the Dan Lewis I tried to find a copy of the actual menu I couldn't but if anybody's ever been there and has a copy of menu or can find a copy of the menu like let me know if there's actually a pizza called the Dan Lewis on there but the whole point of this write is that Joe exotic was building a brand between the zoo and the bar and the pizza place he was milking the exotic animal angle for everything it was worth he wore these silk animal print shirts he brought in camera crews to follow him around 24/7 and record everything he did he had a YouTube channel where he posted vlogs and music videos all the music videos guys the music videos my favorite thing to watch if you haven't seen the here kitty-kitty music video yet or the I saw Tiger and Tiger saw man music video you guys just have to I mean if you're in a bad mood if you're feeling down by this whole quarantine thing just just watch these music videos and I promise you'll feel better job always had a gun or two strapped to his leg his whole thing was this outlandish dramatic flamboyant loud guy now what I was thinking of when I was watching him was John Mark Byers if you've ever seen the documentary Paradise Lost it's about the West Memphis Three case Joe reminded me so much of John Mark Byers who was Chris by her stepfather in the film Byers was hamming it up for the cameras shooting at watermelons saying they were the boys that were suspected of killing his son sitting in his house recording his music so the world could hear very similar personalities and there's a lot that I think about this but maybe that'll be for another video to employees at the GW Zoo said when the cameras were on which they usually always were Joe would become uncontrollable he would throw fits and yell and storm around firing people just to make it things seem interesting you know for good TV and as interesting as his life was in reality considering he lived on a property filled with lions and tigers and bears oh my I don't honestly think that he could help the attention of his viewers very long if not for a volatile and very public feud between himself and Karel Baskin Karel Baskin was born on June 6th 1961 in San Antonio Texas to a very poor family Karel Baskin is a Gemini is anybody surprised I wasn't Carroll to claims that when she was a young girl she was sexually abused and when she was a teenager she ran away from home and began living alone until she met Michael Murdock at the age of 17 and married him they had one child together a daughter named Jamie but according to Carol her husband was very abusive to her but she stayed with him in spite of this because the thought of being that young and raising a child alone terrified her when she was 20 she met the man who would become her second husband Jack Donald Lewis also known as Don Lewis it was January of 1981 and according to Carole she'd left her house after being attacked by her husband she was walking along Nebraska Avenue in Tampa when dad drove by and picked her up now this story that Carole tells about when she met her husband I can't I can't I can't take it it's so odd it's so weird it's like the beginning of every scary movie where a woman ends up in the basement of some creepy guy and never escapes she's walking down the road he pulls up and tried to talk to her she doesn't respond he drives away but he pulls up next to her again and he tells her I don't want to hurt you he gives her a gun and tells her to point it at him while they're driving because he just needs someone to talk to and she does she gets in the car and then she also says while they're in the car together he mentions to her you know I could just strangle you at any time and she's like I know and then they go to a motel and spend the night there together and so the greatest love story of all time is born he was 43 and she was 20 they were both married but apparently neither one of them was happy so they started seeing each other Carole wasn't the only woman in Don's life there was his wife Gladys who he married when he was 17 and she was 14 which is also disturbing to me and I feel like nobody picked up on that I mean I know things were different back in the day women got married younger but 14 and the GLaDOS explains it in in the documentary like I had to have my parents sign papers to agree to the marriage and so did Dan because he was under 18 but he's 17 injure 14 she was a child and apparently Dan had a lot of other different girlfriends as well he was just a very affectionate man and he had a high sex drive and he liked the ladies we can honestly put him in the ranks of most of the other men in this documentary like da cantle and Jeff Lowe who also can't seem to settle for one woman Don and Carol carried on like this until Dan divorced his wife and married Carol in 1991 the other interesting thing about Dan which I think explains his luck with the ladies is that he was a self-made millionaire through real estate and used cars Don Adam asked himself quite a fortune now it's debated on how much he had some people say 7 million some people say 9 million but I mean he's millionaire it doesn't really matter if it's 7 or 9 and he had a real obsession with animals which Carol shared according to her that's what brought them together in the first place their common love of cats in the documentary Carol wants you to know how obsessed with cats she is she says she doesn't watch anything on TV unless there's a cat involved she lives eats and breathes for ending captivity of wild cats although she herself keeps wild cats in captivity but we'll get to that the very first picture of her is baby she's got a cat she said she's never been a person who has friends so as a child her friends were two imaginary white cats she also says that she's always had an affinity for cats which is honestly said by many people in this documentary almost verbatim but then she goes on to say she's allergic to cats like Joe she wears a lot of cat prints a lot of animal prints she has this hippie vibe about her you know long flowing dresses long flowing hair flower crowns she wears flower crowns a lot I'm not trying to judge anyone but flower crowns I posted on Twitter that Carol reminds me of a Manson girl someone who could have easily stepped into Susan Atkins shoes and been very successful at it but that's just my opinion allegedly she's not a Manson girl I think she just could have been okay so down Lewis had all this money him and Carol loved cats and exotic animals and they started this sanctuary in Florida which is now called Big Cat Rescue which according to the website began taking in exotic animals in November of 1992 he and Carol ran this place together but they didn't agree on everything Don liked baby tigers so he would breed the Tigers in order to get his cub fix and Carol disagreed with this Don also owned a park in Costa Rica which was located on 200 acres of land that's bananas to me right so I think they're their animal sanctuary in Florida was on like 33 acres and Joey exotics is on like 12 right but down order Park in Costa Rica that was on 200 acres that's a lot a lot of land and he'd fly to Costa Rica a few times a year to check in on his business there and to have affairs with other women something that his first wife Gladys did confirm and admit that he did that and he had done that for a while Gladys seems to think that carol was disappointed because when she met Don he was married and then he left his wife to marry her and maybe she thought that she could be enough for him but she never was enough for him just like Gladys wasn't enough for him but if you look at the pictures Carol when she was you know a young woman in her 20s and 30s she was actually really gorgeous like I I just once again I got the Manson vibes for her but a really beautiful woman so maybe she hoped you know oh he's just sick of his wife his wife's older than me I'm young and nubile and you know I share his his passions and his hobbies I'll be enough to keep him happy and when she found out that she wasn't and he was having multiple affairs in Costa Rica and and in the States she she got angry and maybe she didn't like that and maybe that's when things started to sour between Carol and Don now according to Carol every time Don went to Costa Rica she'd bring in the vet to fix as many animals as she could so that he couldn't breed them and I imagine this caused some major problems between Don and Carol she never like admits to it she never says that they fought about this but I can imagine that when he got back from Costa Rica he would wonder why all of these animals weren't producing litters maybe she even told him because she seems like piano person in my opinion it's just my opinion she seems like a kind of person who he'd get back from Costa Rica and she'd be like yeah while you were gone this time I fixed seven Tigers so you're not gonna be breeding them anymore you know like kind of shoving it in his face so I imagine that this did cause some fights so Don Luis disappeared on August 18th 1997 and no one has heard from him since not his ex-wife not his kids not his lawyer not his friends not Carol allegedly no one and as you know this is highly debated or not so highly debated in the plot of tiger king did Carol Baskin cover her husband in anchovy oil and feed him to the Tigers before Don disappeared it seemed that there was trouble in paradise with his wife he told his daughters that he was trying to divorce Carol but he wanted to ensure that she wouldn't run off his money and he also told them that she was scaring him he was scared of her two months before he vanished he filed a domestic violence claim against her telling a judge that she'd threatened to kill him and this was the second time the judge apparently didn't believe that the threat was serious and it was dismissed Don gave a copy of the report to his assistant anyways and instructed her that you know he was still scared and if anything happened to him to show this to the police because you know suggesting that if anything happens to me it's my wife a few days before he went missing and Don purchased a plane ticket to Costa Rica which would never be used and he put some equipment on a truck that was headed for Miami the day he disappeared he was scheduled to drop off real estate signs to his lawyer's office and when the office opened for the day the signs were there they had been left there but no one had seen Don another person interviewed in the documentary a man named Mark McCarthy said he saw Don a month or so before he disappeared and Don had mentioned that he felt like his life was in danger and Wendell Williams who's a business associate of Don's claims Don indicated to him that he wanted to divorce Carol and then that was the last time Wendell ever saw Don his van was later found abandoned at the Pilate County Airport in Spring Hill now this was a private Airport and it was about 40 miles away they can't rescue and apparently Don who was an experienced pilot he would sometimes buy planes from this airport in cash so there wouldn't be like a record of it now once again I have not seen any proof of that that Don did this but most likely he did especially if he liked flying inside the van were his keys in his briefcase no sign of Don and the detectives who worked this case they don't believe that Don drove his van there himself but that someone else did as always to understand what happened at the end we have to go back to the beginning and there are very few people whose backgrounds interested me as much as Joe exotic on August 23rd Carroll's asked to take a polygraph she says she'd love to but her attorney whose last name is cacciatore by the way he advised her not to so she has an interview at the Tampa Bay Times and she says you know I'd love to let law-enforcement look at every inch of this property my property you know Big Cat Rescue stating I'd rather be cooperative but all the legal advice is against it on December 7 1998 dance children from his first marriage told People magazine that they believed Carol killed their father and fed him to the Tigers his daughter Donna said quote it's a perfect scenario to dispose of someone we were upset because the cops didn't test the DNA on the meat grinder but here's what Carol Baskin things happened to her husband or what she says she thinks happened to him according to Carol in the years before Don went missing she noticed signs of mental deterioration and claims he'd been to several doctors and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder she said quote Don has purchased a number of properties in Costa Rica and after his disappearance one of the caretakers called and told me there were people reporting seeing him there that is the only reason I urged the police to investigate there now keep in mind there's no flight plan or reports of Don flying away in a plane that day nobody who worked at the the airport the private airport says they saw him and although he was an experienced pilot and he could have it's quite unlikely no employee saw him no paperwork exists no radar ever picked him up but Carol claims he flew illegally without you know leaving a flight plan and he knew how to stay low enough over the Gulf of Mexico in order to evade a radar and the police did investigates in Costa Rica and at home in Florida but no sign of down was ever discovered I mean there's 40 acres of the property that they had over there they can't rescue and another 200 at the property in Costa Rica so I'm not sure how thorough it could have been but I do know with almost 100% certainty that the police certainly couldn't have checked every single inch of property in Costa Rica and Florida and there's the little matter of Don's will and his power of attorney paperwork it seems that after Don left or disappeared or vanished whatever have you Carol and her father broke into his office where his will was kept now his secretary remembered what the will had said before but then after Carol had invaded the office the will stated that she was the recipient of his fortune and she would also have power of attorney so Ann McQueen she's the trusted personal assistant of Don and the story she tells in regards to Don's will is kind of shocking Carol and her dad called Don's handyman telling him that they needed to get into Don's office so the handyman goes and helps them basically you know break into this place cuts the locks on the gates they break into Anne's office where the Wills and the power of attorneys are held and I say wills and power of attorneys in plural because there was two copies of each so Ann gets a phone call that the alarm at the office was triggered apparently they also cut the power water in the sewage the cops show up and shows up and like I said and says in her office there was two copies of Don's well and two copies of his power of attorney and says all copies were removed from the office but that Ann had been the executor and power of attorney on both wills now being the executor of the will it doesn't necessarily mean that you're gonna get the fortune you know so Ann wouldn't have been sitting here like yeah I was the executor of the will and I get his money and I don't even think she's trying to fight for the money but what the executor of a will does do is make sure that the person's last wishes and what they did want to happen with their property and their money gets you know followed through on appropriately now Don's you know missing right but technically nobody knows if he's dead or alive but after five years he can be pronounced dead if he doesn't turn back up so after five years and one day carol has him pronounced dead and then she produces the documents the will and the power of attorney and it wasn't n who was you know the executor and the power of attorney anymore Carol was now executor and power of attorney but the strangest part is the verbage on downs power of attorney it stated the durable family power of attorney shall not be affected by any disability or disappearance and that's not common to see an oil or a power attorney usually it's like in the event of my death but to write in the event of my disappearance almost like you're expecting to go missing Don's lawyer said in 37 years of practicing law he had never seen the words upon my disappearance on a power of attorney or a will and why would it be it's not normal so typical but carol has an answer for that too Carol said quote Don had told me about people going to Costa Rica and disappearing our Costa Rican attorney Roger Patterson said the helicopter brothers were the local version of the mafia and Dan was loaning them money that is why I included disappearance as an event that would activate power of attorney I am sure attorney Jo Fritz is correct that it is unusual it made perfect sense in the situation given what I was told by Don and Peterson about Costa Rica and Don's dealings there at the time and then you find out that Carole's brother was a sheriff's deputy and the day he went missing Carol left the sanctuary and drove to a nearby store to pick up some milk byproducts for the cats at 3:00 a.m. and her car broke down and Carol ran into her brother and another deputy and the second deputy gave Carol ride back home and this would be just hours before Don vanished and was last seen by Carol herself it's certainly suspicious and when you look at it I mean it's pretty clear who would stand to gain the most in the event of Don going missing if he had not gone missing he would have most certainly divorced Carol and she most certainly would have known that that was the path he was on she would have got no money she would have been separated from her precious cats and she knew this with Dan out of the picture she was a millionaire and she could run the sanctuary any way she wanted not having to worry about her husband running around breeding tigers and lions picking up new in Costa Rica I find a very grimy as well that Carol essentially cut Don's first family out his ex-wife and children were given very little of the estate but in the documentary Carol acts as if she did them a favor by not dissolving their trusts after Don and his daughters had a falling out and he had asked her to but there's no evidence that Don and his daughters had this huge falling-out in which Don asked Carol to dissolve their trusts besides Carol's word and if Don had wanted to dissolve his daughter's trusts he would have no problem talking to his own lawyer about doing that he talked to his own lawyer all the time about all sorts of things including trying to get out of a marriage with Carol so why would he have asked Carol to be the go-between in that okay so here we are right Carol's coming for Joe on his treatment of animals and Joe retaliates he starts talking online to anyone who will listen about how Carol killed her husband and got away with it and he illustrates this in a music video he called here kitty-kitty where he hires a Carol Baskin look-alike and has her feeding body parts to the Tigers if I can play a clip here I will I don't know what then I don't want the copyright status of Joe exotics music videos is but if not I'll just link it I'm sure many of you have already seen it and for the next few years there's this ridiculous and you've now back and forth Carol accuses him of breeding animals for profit he accuses her of killing her husband she accuses him of trademark infringement when he starts using signage and wording very close to what she used at her sanctuary he's like sue me she does the copyright trademark infringement thing between Carol and Joe is interesting because I was like you know it doesn't look exactly like her signage and stuff that she used at Big Cat Rescue but I definitely know for a fact that he was trying to gain clout and recognition off of you know her sanctuary so by making his website look like her web site you know calling it the Oklahoma branch or the Oklahoma office instead of the Florida office because Carol is in Florida and he was in Oklahoma yeah he was definitely trying to do that but did she have to go as hard for him as she went did she have to no no and there reason she did is cuz this woman is vindictive in my opinion she's a control freak she loves dominating she likes to be wearing the pants as we can see in her her new marriage with her husband Howard and I mean we don't have time to talk about the whole Jo tried to have Carol killed thing you know this video was pretty much to like introduce Joe and Carol's backgrounds talk a little bit about their feud kind of try to figure out did Carol kill her husband or what do we think but I would like to make a video about whether or not you guys think Joe exotic actually tried to have Carol killed or if he was set up and I have my thoughts about that but basically Carol just comes for Joe and she financially like of ruins him there's this whole incident on Joe's property where this building burns down and inside there's alligators and I read that those alligators belonged to Michael Jackson so just saying I did not hear that in the documentary but apparently those alligators belong to Michael Jackson but also also in that building with the alligators was all the camera equipment all the memory cards you know the guy who was there following Joe around the camera Joe had found this guy on Craigslist and basically asked him to produce Joe exact tv.com you know Joe's television show and the guy was like I don't have any interest really and like you know messing with your little web series but I do think this is interesting and this could be a reality television show so if we agree I hope you produce your your TV show and then you let me use this footage for a reality TV show of my own then we got a deal and Joe was like yeah so all this dudes footage all his hours and hours and hours of video footage you know are in this this this room or this building that got set on fire and it annoyed me as a youtuber and somebody who does you know get on camera a lot has a lot of raw content the guy was like I didn't back them up anywhere why man you were there for months why didn't you back them up anywhere I almost don't know if I believed that a lot of the video footage was lost everything was burned you know that they used it was the studio apparently and then everybody thought well maybe it was Carroll Baskin but I don't think it was right I definitely think Joe exotic 100% burned down his own television studio and there's a couple reasons for that one is she was suing him right for everything he had and he started destroying his own things just so she wouldn't get her hands on them you know so he's recording videos of him being like Carol Baskin wants my bed and then he's like shooting the bed you know with bullets and like throwing it into the lake so anything in that building was probably going to be taken by Carol anyways and on top of that there's a lot of video footage in there that could potentially incriminating so I do think he burnt that down himself and the alligators in the process and then because he's so broke because she's literally coming after him trying to destroy him okay not just financially but I think emotionally as well Joe brings a wolf in sheep's clothing into the zoo and as we know that is Jeff Lowe at the end of the day right there's no good team to be on here these are are all bad selfish money hungry people but whatever you do think about Carol Baskin I do agree with her on one thing big cats do not belong in cages but Carol big cats don't belong in you know closed off enclosures in your backyard either and in that way I do think she was very much a hypocrite because yeah we're her conditions at bay can't rescue slightly better than Joe's conditions at the GW Zoo sure but you're still keeping these beautiful majestic animals behind bars essentially whether they have an extra you know five feet to run around in or not and I do believe that Carol was against breeding you know these tigers and lions and these exotic animals I definitely do but it bothered her that other zoo owners didn't share her same moralistic values the fact of the matter is when people pay it to go to one of these exotic animal enclosures I don't know what they're called zoos their zoos to me you can call them rescues you can call them sanctuaries to me there's oohs Wow so when people pay to go to these zoos where they can actually get one-on-one with the animals they are gonna be more more interested in like the young babies just cause they're cute I mean that's why people go to pets doors right there's more people that are going to pet stores to play with puppies then there are going to shelters to you know look at and pet older abandoned rescue dogs it's just the fact of the world we are humans we like things that are fuzzy and cute and little so with Joe and you know a lot of these other guys like da cantle not having a problem and not being morally opposed to breeding their animals to get cubs to bring more people and she's looking at this as competition they don't live by the same standards and the same structure that I do but they're going to make more money and they're gonna be more popular because they have Cubs but I don't because I don't want to breed them so I'm going to go after this guy and put him out of business so that bad no longer is a problem for me it's no longer in opposition to me and it's no longer cutting into my profits Carol is a very greedy person ultimately though I do think Joe started out genuinely caring about these animals but he was corrupted by money as really happened so often but Carol she just gives me this impression of someone who is a savage a stone-cold right her relationship with her new husband Howard is completely strange the way she treats him I mean she had him on a leash in their wedding pictures it reminds me of Michael Scott and Jan so if you watch the office you'll know what I mean if you've seen the episode dinner party my sister and I always make jokes because when when everybody comes over to Michaels and Jan's house for dinner everybody walks in and you know the time for dinner and Jan's like oh hey guys let me take your coats okay I'm just gonna go into the kitchen and put the osso bucco in and it'll be done in like five hours so it's a joke now every time my sister and I go to someone's house and they haven't even started dinner we're like oh you're just gonna go braise the osso buco because in this episode the people didn't want to go to Jan's for dinner but they kind of were forced to and then it turned into this long like drawn-out nights watch it if you haven't it's funny but anyways Michael brings everyone on a tour of their townhouse and he shows them a bench at the foot of the bed and Jan's like oh what's that for and he says this is where I sleep this is my bed and they're all like what because there's big king bed you know right in front of it and he's like yeah Jan you know doesn't like crowding in the bed so she makes me sleep on this I like it it's my little bed and he has to curl up to fit on it so I imagine that Carol Baskin is sort of like this I can see Howard you know being forced to sleep at the foot of her bed or even force to sleep like on the floor next to her bed on a leash you don't treat your husband like that I don't care if he allows you to it's disrespectful it's disgusting I mean when you're watching the show and they're showing you pictures of Carol and and Howard and how really poorly she treats him it's funny but also it's not it's not funny she likes a relationship where she can be in complete control of her husband where he adores her where he says and does what she wants him to say and do and Dan Lewis wasn't like that you know he did what he wanted she said she didn't like that he was breeding these wild animals he kept doing it she probably said I don't like you going to Costa Rica and sleeping with these other women he still did it with Howard he does whatever she wants I mean he I think the first thing he says in this this documentary is Carol's the mother Teresa of big cats you know and and when he's talking and they're both sitting in front of the camera being interviewed and Howard's talking Carol doesn't you know look at the camera she doesn't look down while she's listening she stares straight at him and in her eyes it's almost like a challenge like see something I don't like Howard say something I don't like and when he finishes talking there's this look of like relief and like twisted pleasure in her face like yeah that's exactly how we rehearsed it so I get a really bad vibe from Carol but I also think that like I said these are all messed up people how did all these people end up in the same time in the same place it's just beyond me they're all messed up but Carol I think has a very different kind of personality and she admits it herself you know she says she didn't have friends growing up she's an isolated solitary person whereas Joe is like this outgoing fun he makes things fun he's always putting on a performance like you're never gonna be bored around Joe but I feel like if you're hanging out with Carol she's gonna stab you in the back I don't feel like she has loyalty to anyone besides herself and also in the end I believe that Joe turned into that but there's people who still had positive things to say about him in the documentary even the employee staff who got his arm bit off by a tiger or a lion I can't remember which but his arm was completely bit off and he wasn't even mad about it he was just like yeah I mean this is this is what happens this is the the risk that you take and I think it was in the reunion episode with joel mchale where staff said you know they didn't show a lot of what joe was that was good he would give you the coat off his back he would do anything for you and they didn't showcase that well enough according to staff well Carol I believe from day one was always out for herself was always out to make money it was always out to make a name for herself and she didn't care who she used or hurt to get there and to me you know whatever if that's how you are that's how you are if that's how you make your money if that's how you're successful that's that's how you are but if she did kill her husband that's that's a different story now you've done something illegal well what do you guys think do you think that Carol Baskin killed Don Luis it's a very I don't know I don't know how I feel about it I think if Dan Lewis is dead and somebody killed him it was probably her allegedly but it's also very possible that maybe he just took off like I said he's got 200 acres in Costa Rica he could have just disappeared he had enough money probably but did he take any money out of the bank like did he bring any money has any money been touched that's another thing they're not very clear and when you're looking at this investigation online these little questions there's no answers to them did Don touch his money did he withdraw money was there any cash that he had did he go to the bank I don't know I don't think Don Luis is alive and I think that it's possible Carol had something to do with it it's possible allegedly don't come for me Carol I know you like to sue people but I don't think she worked alone to be honest so if someone does know something and hopefully you know it comes out but it probably never will because she's a terrifying person and there's a lot to discuss to like the employees that works at all of these zoos doc handles Carol Baskins Joe exotics it seemed like they all had these miserable lives they were horribly right but it just goes to show you what someone will tolerate what someone will deal with in order to live with lions and tigers and play with them and raise them and care for them they love the animals that much that they would tolerate a horrible living environment a terrible working environment no pay or very little pay having to get fed meat off of an expired Walmart truck just so that they could keep these animals in their lives and the animals are obviously mistreated as well I think on all of these places I mean there was an issue with Carol and Joe where he posted a picture of her employees holding up these like slaughtered rabbits and they were smiling and they looked happy and he was like oh I thought Carol doesn't agree with you know mistreating animals and she responded like oh no they weren't happy because they killed the rabbits they were happy because their favorite Tigers were gonna get a rabbit that day either way taking a picture while you're holding up dead rabbits is sick I don't care if the people in the picture are excited to give the rabbit to their tiger if you are an animal rights person and you preach about you know not hurting animals etc etc probably not the best picture to take it doesn't look good and then there's allegations of Joe exotic killing Tigers so that he could bring in more Tigers there's also allegations of da Cantrell doing all sorts of crazy stuff on his property oh so if you want me to keep doing Tiger King videos we can investigate whether or not Joe exotic did in fact try to have Carroll killed or if he was set up we can also do a video about what's going on with da cantle and his big love life in Myrtle Beach and I would really also like talk about Geoff Lowe who I have some theories on and they're not the theories that are on Twitter because I was talking to Kathleen Kathleen lights from YouTube about this the other day and she said people are speculating on Twitter that Jeff Lowe is Carroll Baskins missing husband like it's so insane because Don Luis would be like over 80 today and clearly Jeff Lo is not I mean it's hard to figure out how old Jeff Lowe actually is because he always wears like a hat and he dresses like a teenager but definitely not a tea so there's a lot to do there's a lot to look into with Jeff low tonight like I said I have theories about how he happened to be at the zoo how he happened to be a part of what eventually brought Joe exotic down I think that if I was his wife I would have definitely fed him to the Tigers by now because this guy is completely disrespectful I'm like whatever you all can say that's just their life that's just what they do some people are swingers okay okay but the amount of times that he talks about other women in front of her is horrible and she's pregnant about to have their child and he's not like I can't wait for this baby he's like I can't wait for the hot nanny I'm gonna hire when we have this baby and
