every great ad tells a story eat life by the bowlful little kid big bowl big spoon heinz the only ketchup pasta hines no everybody else's tobacco is poisonous stripes he's toasted if you don't like what they're saying change the conversation very good and keep going [Music] so have you figured out a way to work the wheel into it we know it's hard because wheels aren't really seen as exciting technology even though they are the original well technology is a glittering lure but uh there's the rare occasion when the public can be engaged on a level beyond flash if they have a sentimental bond with the product my first job i was in-house at a fur company with this old pro copywriter greek named teddy and teddy told me the most important idea in advertising is new creates an itch you simply put your product in there as a kind of calamine lotion but he also talked about a deeper bond with the product nostalgia it's delicate but potent sweetheart teddy told me that in greek nostalgia literally means the pain from an old wound it's a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone [Music] this device isn't a spaceship a time machine goes backwards it forwards us to a place where we ache to go again it's not called the wheel it's called the carousel lets us travel the way a child travels round and round back home again to a place where we know we are loved [Music] good luck at your next meeting i'm gonna be bold and say that no one in this room knows more about the burger chef customer than peggy olson she has visited 20 restaurants in nine states interviewed hundreds and is obviously uniquely qualified to craft this modern campaign every great ad tells a story here to tell that story is peggy olson thank you dawn that's a lot to live up to because i certainly can't tell a better story than the one we saw last night i don't know what was more miraculous the technological achievement that put our species in a new perspective or the fact that all of us were doing the same thing at the same time sitting in this room we can still feel the pleasure of that connection because i realized now we were starved for it we really were and yes we'll feel it again when they all return safely and yes the world will never be the same in some ways but tonight i'm going to go back to new york and i'll go back to my apartment and find a ten-year-old boy parked in front of my tv eating dinner now i don't need to charge you for a research report that tells you that most television sets are not more than six feet away from the dinner table and that dinner table is your battlefield and your prize this is the home your customers really live in this is your dinner table dad likes sinatra son likes the rolling stones the tv's always on vietnam playing in the background the news wins every night and you're starving and not just for dinner what if there was another table where everybody gets what they want when they want it it's bright and clean and there's no laundry no telephone and no tv and we can have the connection that we're hungry for there may be chaos at home but there's family supper at burger chef that's beautiful that's nice to hear because that's the name of the spot glad you can make it i can't thank you enough for waiting ah don't think about it you've been unwinding as mr crane ruins peyton place perfect well let's get to it roger thank you i'll be on my way but first victory lap oh god pete green jimmy olsen [Applause] wrap it up quickly gents we have an after party to attend thank you roger is everyone set that's one word joey didn't start without me did you no don i would not do that okay everybody ready so life cereal delicious crispy and it's got a big name you know and i know you want to associate it with health but that's not fun joey okay you know what i got it look there are sweeter cereals than this but i kept thinking about you know nostalgia how you remember something in the past and it feels good but it's a little bit painful like when you were a kid that's the truth and life that's a scary word to anyone at any age so how do we make it fun eat life by the bowlful little kid big bowl big spoon kids see the giant bowl of cereal and they smile because you know they'd eat a box of it if they could and moms see it and they get this twinge of how little their kid still is even though they have to deal with life get those two together in a market and i think we're gonna sell some cereal that's all i have well i think if you'd invite us into the rest of your company we could build a saturday morning tv show around the whole quaker oats family in fact it could be called the quaker oats family i like the bowl full but i think it's kind of smart for regular folks you know the irony i guess children will get the picture moms look at the iron yeah but when i go back to chicago all they're gonna want to hear is a slogan and i don't think this is gonna cut it well why don't we let dom work that over we can either talk on monday if you're staying the weekend or we can come see you in chicago i got it i got to pete how about life is just a bowl of life cereal uh life is sweet uh enjoy the rest of your life cereal don they're not expecting you to do this right now give me a second life the reason to get out of bed in the morning life the cure for the common breakfast life its sweetness never ends life eat it by the bowl full oh oh there you go cure for the common breakfast love it it's got the health angle life makes you feel better it's got protein very nice that dog will hunt wonderful we'll get that put together for you should we discuss media i can keep going i think we got a home run we don't need to take up any more of your time i know you have some celebrating to do i don't know what to say this is the most fun i ever had in new york anytime fellas gentlemen before you leave can i just say something i don't know don can you the federal trade commission and reader's digest have done you a favor they've let you know that any ad that brings up the concept of cigarettes and health together well it's just going to make people think of cancer yes and we are grateful to them but what lee junior said is right if you can't make those health claims neither can your competitors so we've got a lot of people not saying anything that sells cigarettes not exactly this is the greatest advertising opportunity since the invention of cereal we have six identical companies making six identical products we can say anything we want how do you make your cigarettes i don't know shame on you we breed insect repellent tobacco seeds plant them in the north carolina sunshine grow it cut it cure it toast it there you go there you go but everybody else's tobacco's toasted no everybody else's tobacco is poisonous lucky strikes is toasted well gentlemen i don't think i have to tell you what you just witnessed here i think you do advertising is based on one thing happiness and you know what happiness is happiness is the smell of a new car it's freedom from fear it's a billboard on the side of the road that screams with reassurance that whatever you're doing it's okay you are okay it's toasted i get it
