medical school campus [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] good afternoon everyone let me give a special welcome to the family members and guests of our second year medical students after a year of waiting for this day i'm sure that all of our attendees are excited to get underway with today's event i'm michael collins and i have the great privilege to serve as chancellor of umass chan medical school the commonwealth's first and only public medical school it's a distinct pleasure to welcome you to our white coat ceremony held in the beautifully adorned hanover theater an iconic landmark that serves as a hub for the performing arts in the central massachusetts region similar to our hometown of worcester new england's second largest city umass chan medical school is experiencing a period of growth and transformation you only need to walk around campus to if just for a brief period to see and sense that we are indeed an institution on the move but i would not encourage you to take a stroll around campus right this minute it is in fact the reason why we are marking this milestone event here in the theater rather than our customary venue the campus green the campus is a very active construction zone at the moment with not one but two substantial projects at different phases in the building process the new state-of-the-art va community-based outpatient clinic on our campus will open in november and we will have the privilege to provide care for the veterans of central and western massachusetts there is no greater service than all of us can provide than to serve our veterans and this winter the first steel beams to support our new nine-story education and research building will sprout from the ground when complete this new signature facility will reconnect the linkage of our research and education complexes around an impressive campus green more importantly it will signal the start of a new future defined by dynamism and distinction innovation and impact already the opening chapter of our bright and bullish future is being written by the recent news of a historic history-making 175 million dollar transformational gift to our medical school from the morningside foundation of newton massachusetts we now begin the second 50 years of our journey poised to transform our institution and to take our rightful place among the finest medical schools in the world committed to health care education research and service to others to the generosity of the chan family we shall now be positioned to attract educate and mentor more outstanding students recruit and retain committed faculty develop innovative and cutting-edge programs and to encourage all students faculty and staff to read double our commitment and the legacy of the chan family to serve others this commitment starts today as you the class of 2024 will don white coats emblazoned with your school's new name the t.h chan school of medicine mr t.h chan was in every sense every sense of the word a self-made man principled and personable empathetic and energetic determined and dogged he achieved great professional success yet he chose not to be defined by what he did but by who he was he lived a life of meaning and purpose shaped and sustained by his belief in a shared humanity that connects and binds us all together his generosity of spirit and spirit of generosity benefited countless families as we gather here today to observe commemorate and indeed celebrate our second year medical students transition to the medical profession profession we shall bear witness to our medical school students receiving their t.h chan school of medicine white coats in donning their coats our students now our youngest colleagues will make a firm commitment to always recognize and respect that shared humanity that exists between patient and caregiver by doing so you will honor the legacy of a man whose name will become synonymous with our school of medicine in wearing their new white coats our students also will make a commitment to lifelong learning to living a life and service to others to be uncompromising in practicing evidence-based care to upholding the standards of our profession and most importantly to always remember that it's a privilege for us to care for our patients and not a privilege for our patients to be cared for by us as stewards of this great public medical school we're so pleased to welcome all of you into the medical community and now to guide you toward our most fulfilling career caring for and about others it's a pleasure now to welcome dr terry flock medical school provost and dean of the t.h chan school of medicine to offer a personal reflection dean flock [Applause] thank you chancellor collins thanks for bringing us together here on this wonderful occasion so we can be together to celebrate such a wonderful series of events let me please add my words of congratulation and welcome to you the class of 2024 of the th chan school of medicine and to your families friends and loved ones both here and remotely and i also want to thank and congratulate our faculty on the stage i'm going to embarrass one of them dr ann larkin our senior associate dean of the th chan school and vice provost for educational affairs dr larkin is a physician but also a surgeon and believe it or not in between the first white coat ceremony for the class of 2025 and you're white cult ceremony for the class of 2024 at that in that interval of only a few hours both of those ceremonies occurring today dr larkin successfully completed an appendectomy on one of her patients talk about just in time that's that's fabulous you all do have great faculty and great role models but the experience of you i'm going to recognize and acknowledge the experience that you have had the class that entered last year in 2020 yours was a completely unique experience in our history under the cloud of the pandemic and the soul-wrenching turmoil of the year of george floyd's murder in the black lives matter movement you were admitted to a medical school for which you had interviewed only by zoom and with colleagues whom you had met only on social media in most cases beginning your medical education primarily remotely set the stage for a first-year experience that was riven with challenges that your predecessors never had to face in fact i'm still in awe of what you were able to accomplish every year the adjustment to the workload of medical school is daunting in your first year you had to pick up the material delivered in a new online remote formats but clearly the biggest hurdle for you was the social isolation the lack of all the usual ways of gathering with your classmates in person for group activities this deprived you of a form of peer support that all previous classes had enjoyed just as one example every year in august we have a welcome to med school cookout but the class of 2024 you guys you had your welcome cookout in the last week of may quite a delay although i will say the turnout was wonderful and the camaraderie was exceptional and now delayed by a full year you get your white coats ceremony and i do want to thank the chancellor for his leadership in making this happen because not every school has gone back to catch up on things that were lost in the height of the pandemic white coat ceremonies are relatively new tradition in medicine many say this ceremony began at the university of chicago's pritzker school of medicine in 1989 but the first formal white coat ceremony by that name was at the columbia university of college sorry the company columbia university college of physicians and surgeons which again i shouldn't butcher dr larkin's alma mater in 1993 arnold p gold a teacher and pediatric neurologist there created the first full-fledged white coat ceremony at columbia we should note that we began the white coat ceremony here at umass chan school in 2010 and that our first ceremony was highlighted by a visit and keynote speech from dr jordy cohen who is then the president of the arnold p gold foundation before this ceremony came into being mets med students in most schools took an oath for the first time at commencement when they were graduating with their md at umass chan medical school we had evolved a tradition of a second year oath ceremony or we had this was before the chan name was given based on the idea that students would take the oath prior to their first interactions with patients in the hospital however with our curriculum as you all know you integrate seeing patients throughout the four years beginning your professional interaction with your patients in the first year in your lpp or longitudinal preceptor program experience in that experience you work at the elbow of practicing physicians interviewing and examining your patients so it's only fitting that we put your first your first oath in your first white coat here as early in medical school as we can in my view both the coat itself and the oath are very deep signs of commitment you are members of the t.h chan school class of 24 2024 and you as the members of that class have written a beautiful oath tempered by the experience of a pandemic year just as steel is tempered in a furnace and that superimposed onto your arrival into the profession as our colleagues in caring for most of us as physicians the role is much more than a job or even a profession it's also part of our core identity we talk about being a doctor or becoming a doctor not about having a job as a doctor our identity as a physician is integral to who we are but even more importantly than that deciding to enroll in medical school you're making a profound commitment a commitment to your patients and families although not yet fully assuming the responsibility of the physician you've stepped at least partially into the physician's professional role whenever you interact with patients and families those interactions must be taken undertaken in the spirit of humility and commitment to the basic welfare and basic autonomy of our patients to make their own decisions in their lives this commitment could be stated succinctly as this when we are with the patient our role is to be what they need us to be in that moment what they need is to be not what we want to be and helping them through crises of birth and death and everything in between to apply our scientific knowledge of human biology and disease in a way that provides them with the most effective means to live healthy and fulfilled lives your white coat is a visible sign of your commitment when you wear it you're making a promise you may not be fully fulfilling that promise yet since you're not quite a doctor but you're very publicly committed to that to that promise in this past year that commitment has taken on new dimensions of diversity we've come to reckon with as a society how inequitable we can be in areas such as income resource distribution environmental impacts education and especially in health care in that vein we must also be committed to anti-racism in all its forms and to every dimension of diversity when i was in medical school we were dealing with another pandemic the hiv pandemic i can vividly recall a patient i treated as a fourth year med student a man dying of hiv aids in our emergency room it was before we came to grips with the equitable solution of universal precautions and so his treatment bay had been marked off with red infectious hazard tape it was awful i went in and talked with the man tried to comfort him eases discomfort hydrate him treat his pain but his greatest distress was emotional emotional it was from the isolation he felt by not being treated equitably but being singled out in a negative way and stigmatized none of us in that ed had lived up to the commitment we were making with our white coats that day in subsequent years i've thought about how i at times have failed to live up to the promise of the white coat but i take great pride and joy in knowing that what you do in your professional careers as our modern generation of healers will surpass us in the equitability of your fulfillment of your white coat promise so with this public sign of your commitment you join us faculty doctors and other community providers in the service of patients their families and their communities it remains my hope that your time as a student doctor will be filled with joy wonder excitement and anticipation this should be a wonderful time in your lives and we look forward to supporting you and celebrating it with you through all the years to come congratulations and enjoy the rest of the ceremony thank you dean floyd each year we select to deliver a keynote address to our medical students a faculty member who exemplifies the nobless traditions and time-honored values of the medical profession and who serves as a compelling ambassador for umass chan medical school at today's ceremony i have the wonderful pleasure of introducing a master clinician and educator dr sarah cheeseman professor of medicine and the recipient of the 2019 chancellor's medal for distinguished clinical excellence like all of you dr cheeseman has waited over a year to address the class of 2024. during the intervening period she officially hung up her white coat after more than 50 years working as a preeminent infectious disease physician it gives me great pleasure to welcome dr sarah cheeseman to the podium christmas ah i can take this mask off um thank you so much well here you are getting ready for the part of your medical education that actually involves what i suspect you started it for taking care of patients you've worn lab coats before and they're pretty much the same but the meaning wasn't there i often wondered why they made lab coats white considering everything that got on them and wouldn't come out easily in a normal wash in fact that's true of these white coats too they get the usual dirt from being worn plus the extra stains from what happens with patients and they aren't raincoats either but these white coats identify you as someone who is trying to heal to help and not to harm they are not imbued with the miracles that some other beings in white black angels and fairies seem to perform even though you would like to be able to change bad things to good as you have already learned and will continue to learn even making the most correct diagnosis and initiating the best known treatment does not promise success in all cases but this is your intent and the reason you will study hard and keep looking for new information as it comes out and keep a close eye on all your patients labs and other data as well as make the connection with them that lets them know you truly care it may take the ineffable undefinable but let this white coat remind you of that and help you give it to all of the patients you serve and remember that you're not doing this alone but are part of the core of people in white nurses aides and lab techs and pharmacists and so many others who make up the hospital staff and each do their own part in this quest and be sure they know that you appreciate their roles and efforts and see them as your colleagues and comrades and i wish you all as many wonderful experiences patients and colleagues as i had over the 50 years that i wore a white coat so thank you very much dr cheeseman for your your wonderful words of wisdom it's now time to transition to the presentation of white coats i'm pleased to invite dr ann larkin the vice provost for educational affairs to come to the podium to begin the process dr larkin thank you chancellor collins well the last one and a half weeks have certainly been a whirlwind of surprise excitement and celebration at our opening convocation last week we were met with the wonderful news of the gift this transformative gift to our school by the morningside foundation and the chan family and over this week i've listened to words of gratitude and inspiration from the deans of the tan ching fen graduate school of nursing and the morningside graduate school of biomedical sciences and today from the dean of the t.h chan school of medicine and of course the chancellor of the umass chan medical school but today is your day and as much as we relish these celebrations that we've had last week it is important for us to remember that your class spent an entire academic year with little to celebrate you entered medical school in time of turmoil and uncertainty with the pandemic you were not really able to spend time together as a class and gel as individuals end together you know i will be giving my presidential address to the new england surgical society next week and that address is inspired by all of you grit resilience perseverance optimism but with a singular focus on what we can all do to improve upon our society as it is today in the doctoring and clinical skills class which i have the privilege to facilitate i was incredibly humbled last year to read your reflections about what all of this means to you so where is my quinsigamond group are you there you are i won't call out your names but last year i stood in one of the amphitheaters and i have fairly unceremoniously distributed the coats and all of your tools of the trade and i really feel that i did not do you the service that you so deserved but that's what we're here for today i so admire each and every one of you in my quinn sigmund group and in fact i admire all of your class for what you've accomplished and i'm very proud of what you will achieve and already have achieved as you consider this journey i want you to recognize and i certainly recognize that some of you have under uh overcome tremendous hurdles some of you already accomplished amazing things and some of you don't quite yet know what to think of this new costume that you're wearing no matter what all of those other experiences have been today you continue the journey to what to you must seem a long way off but in fact in a few short years you will be graduates of the th chan school of medicine i love quotes from athletes elite athletes who i i liken to physicians in many ways jesse owens was an african-american elite runner competing in the 1936 olympics in berlin germany think about that for a moment he won four gold medals and jesse owens said this we all have dreams in order to make dreams come into reality it takes an awful lot of determination dedication self-discipline and effort pretty good stuff and you've displayed all those qualities in your work to get here as well as your accomplishments in your first year of medical school and you will continue to display them in your work to achieve your ultimate goal of becoming a physician and in that journey you have learned and will learned how to care for patients how to accomplish tasks how to reach diagnoses how to read images how to perform procedures like appendectomies ultimately you will learn how to exercise judgment in the care of other human beings and there's nothing more sobering yet more inspiring than this so as you put on your white coats today as you have in the last year do so with what jesse owens suggested with determination with self-discipline with dedication and my own word with pride and continue your journey of developing the judgment that will eventually become so ingrained deeply within you so let us begin blackstone house head of house dr michael ennis so oh so dr jerry durbin mentor cloaking for dr durbin's students will be done by dr michael ennis samantha ann beck the values and commitments they hold dear i'm pleased to invite class members reid allen jenson and omatawa to the podium to lead the recitation of the class of twenty twenty four oath as well as the other monarchies with the class of 2024 please stand and face the audience we also invite any other physicians in the audience to stand as we together recite the oath of maimonides found on an insert inside your program thy eternal providence has appointed me to watch over the life and health of my fellow human beings may the love for my art actuate me at all times may neither avarice nor miserliness nor thirst for glory or for great reputation engage my mind for the enemies of truth and philanthropy could easily deceive me and make me forgetful of my lofty aim of doing good to my patients may i never see in the patient anything but a fellow creature in pain grant me strength time and opportunity always to correct what i have acquired always to extend its domain for knowledge is immense and the spirit of man can extend infinitely to enrich itself daily with new requirements today we can discover our errors of tomorrow of yesterday and tomorrow we may obtain a new light on what we think ourselves sure of today i have been appointed to watch over the life and death of my fellow human beings here i am ready for my vocation and now i turn unto my calling please be seated i would now like to invite reed allen to introduce the oath of the class of 2024 to the class of 2024 we started medical school during a time unlike any other in recent memory the world as we knew it had changed forever by the pandemic and the profession we sought had suddenly taken on new meaning though the pandemic introduced unfamiliarity of all kinds new fears new challenges new methods of connecting and interacting with the world it also revealed what was already within us not all of it was admirable a glaring light illuminated devastating health disparities the institution of science and the foundations of truth came under siege and we were reminded yet again how deeply systemic racism is entrenched in society and in medicine but it also revealed the best in us we realized the fullness of our capacity for love and kindness we reinforced our commitment to community we showed that we are willing to step up and fight for what we believe is right our adaptability and strength were remarkable as we work to overcome the challenges that we faced our class will forever be remembered as the first to start medical school during the deadliest pandemic in a century while these times have taken their toll on us this moment has also given us newfound resilience and has shaped us in ways we are only just beginning to appreciate our second oath today was written using contributions from our classmates and serves as a testament to our collective power to heal as humans as friends and as future doctors would the class of 2024 again rise and face the audience i now invite omar taway to lead the class in reciting our oath i'm going to try to go slowly as we embark on this journey towards becoming physicians we the class of 2024 will strive to pursue lifelong learning in all aspects of our careers in scientific inquiry cultural humility and confronting systemic racism and injustice mentor the next generation of healthcare providers sharing knowledge and modeling collaboration and respect cultivate an environment that values the contributions of every person including patients colleagues students and community members treat our patients holistically recognizing illness as merely one aspect of the human experience understand the barriers upheld by the medical system which limit access to care based on a patient's identity and lived experience empower our patients with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their own health take responsibility for our mistakes and biases responding to them with patience and desire for improvement recognize the harm and distrust caused by the medical community letting it humble us as we work to build greater trust and equity value our needs and those of our colleagues as we cannot help others without caring for ourselves thank you advocate on behalf of our patients harnessing the privilege bestowed on us by our white coats and leverage our identity and influence as leaders to build our communities better and stronger thank you may these commitments serve as the foundation for our journey through the medical field and guide us to become a positive force for change in the lives of our patients one another and all those in need thank you for all sharing this oath with us [Applause] okay [Applause] we have one bit of business that we have to finish here if we could could i ask yildrim ozdemir to come forward please [Applause] yes please we had a little boo-boo and we're going to fix it miss ozdamir could you please join us [Applause] hey [Applause] it just would have been a
