name is nader nader shahi and i have the privilege of serving as dean of the university of pacific arthur dagoni school of dentistry and it gives me a great deal of pleasure to welcome you today to a ceremony on behalf of our students faculty staff alumni on behalf of our entire digoni school family as a reminder for everyone because of the health and safety orders we do ask everyone to please keep your mass on during the entire ceremony and i know you all had your vaccinations checked as you came in so today is a very special day to gather and celebrate celebrate all of you to celebrate your future especially with all that we've gone through over the last 18 months today is a symbolic step in the journey of our outstanding students this milestone has been a bit delayed but nevertheless we're also happy to mark this special moment with you in person in front of your friends and family that are here in the room and those that are watching through the live feed i know you all wanted to wait to do this in person and i hope the way it was worth it it certainly was for all of us to be able to see you here in the room today you have worked so incredibly hard today's event comes amid a milestone year for us in the digoni school this year we're officially celebrating 125 years since our founding right here in san francisco as a college of physicians and surgeons our school's name has changed over the years but our commitment to helping people lead healthy lives and graduating the very best and brightest has remained constant throughout that has that entire history as a degony school graduate myself i can still remember my first patient interaction like it was yesterday i remember his name i remember the tooth we were working on the procedure we were doing it it's something that will stay with you forever i know that our students also have their own unique stories about their first patients and the many other patients that they've had the opportunity to treat over the last year so how did this tradition of the white coat ceremony come to be i'd like to give you a little bit of a history of that the white coat has served as the preeminent symbol of doctors and healers for over 100 years however you may be surprised to learn that prior to the late 19th century doctors were not white but black black attire was and is still considered formal consequently until about 1900 doctors wore black since medicine and the medical encounters were thought of as very serious and formal encounters at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century when medicine became a truly scientific enterprise the pureness of medicine became reflected in the garb of the doctors and nurses the white coat became the symbol of medical authority and respect and advances upon the knowledge and the art and science of medicine the first full-fledged white coat ceremony in medicine took place in 1993 at the columbia university college of physicians and surgeons however the very first white coat ceremony at a dental school started with guess who it started with us the dagoney school of dentistry and that was back in the uh the late 1900s during that time dr arthur adegoni our late dean emeritus visited a medical white coat ceremony in the university of minnesota and he was so touched by the ceremony that he brought the idea back to our leadership here and we were the very first school to hold such an event the white coat you receive today signifies to patients that you will strive to regard them with the utmost respect to treat their illness to the best of your ability to listen carefully and to preserve the dignity of each individual and the privacy of information shared as a result of the relationship between caregiver and patient to all the family significant others and friends here today and watching online these outstanding students would not be here without your continued love and support and encouragement thank you for what you have and continue to do for all of them i'd like to ask our students to please stand and face your loved ones here in the room and online and give them a round of applause for what they have done for you to get to this point thank you you may be seated for our program today we are honored to have with us some very special guests and members of the faculty and administration i will introduce them and ask them to stand and if you could please hold your applause until i have introduced each of the rows on stage in the first row starting on your left dr colleen [Applause] so now it's a pleasure for me to introduce a special surprise and guest who is actually very close to the members of the dds class of 2022. we have been we've not been able to see him back in san francisco for a long time however we're excited that he's able to be here today to visit with and celebrate his classmates please welcome franz wahl of the pds class of 2022 [Applause] so what's going on [Applause] franz the degony school family has followed your recovery and we want you to know how much we love you and care for you as we discussed during our last call you will always be part of the digoni school family and this very special class so it's wonderful to have you here during the white coat ceremony [Applause] it is now my pleasure to introduce dr judy tippett white president of the california dental association president tippett white began her dental career as a pediatric dental assistant and soon realized dentistry was her passion she received her bachelor's of dietetics from uc davis in 1982 and then attended the digoni school graduating in 1986 as the first woman valedictorian in the history of the dental school upon graduation she returned to her hometown of stockton and joined a solo group practice where she continues to practice general dentistry after 35 years after completion of dental school she began her leadership path within her local component serving on the board of directors and then ascending through the chairs to president within 10 years of graduation concurrently she served our dagoni school alumni association board and was president in 2001. her service at the california dental association began with the new dentist committee leading to terms on the council on membership and many task forces she also served on the ada council on dental practice in 2016 she was appointed chair of the 13th district ada house of delegates where i had the privilege of working with her under her leadership and this began her journey to the cda executive committee where she now leads us as president she and her husband and biggest supporter steve have been married for 38 years and raised three incredible sons and have three wonderful grandchildren please welcome president judy tippett white for a presentation and greetings [Applause] good morning what a special day this is for each of you and your proud families and i'm thrilled to join you for my first white coat ceremony as a 1986 graduate as dr natasha said the white coat ceremony had not yet been created and included in the transition from pre-clinical to clinical student of dentistry the symbolism of this ceremony and the transformation from student to doctor is a commitment you are making from this day forward to care for your patients your colleagues and your profession so as a student of the 1980s i was blessed to have dr arthur degone as my dean he was so passionate about our profession and i can only imagine the great big smile on his face if he had the opportunity to help me don my white coat his passion for our profession and leadership was palpable and contagious much like dr nada shahi's one of dr degoni's most famous and notable quotes was at pacific we grow people and along the way they become doctors dr degoni grew not only people and doctors but he grew leaders and i was among them currently five of the eight officers of the executive committee or the as we're called for the california dental association are pacific dugoni graduates four are women and three of us are all graduates from the class of 1986. statistics like this are not unusual and if you look around most dental meetings the leadership is heavily comprised of dagoni graduates so how did i get to president of cda as dr natasha had said after that first time year of dental school i became involved under uh with leadership under the mentorship of dr degoni and i served as secretary and then vice president of the student council and somehow it felt natural for me to be involved as a leader and wanting to help students have the best dental experience they could and be the voice of students as a fresh-faced dental school graduate i joined our local component became active and then president of the san joaquin dental society captivated by the sense of belonging to such a great organization working with a common goal to support and improve our profession through organized dentistry i served on various uh councils and committees for cda and at the ada level and as dr noddy said i didn't forget our alma mater i served on the board and president of the alumni association my career focused not only on clinical practice but also service to my profession many ask why i take the time time away from my practice and my family i've done so because i firmly believe in the importance of giving back to the profession that has provided me with so many opportunities and if we are not the voice for our profession who will be it is up to us to help guide policy makers dental benefit plan industry governing boards and regulatory agencies to establish protocols and procedures that are practical protect the dental teams and patients and provide reasonable business oversight this was never more evident during the pandemic of covid19 overnight our profession was turned upside down and inside out and when the impact of coven 19 became apparent cda sprang into action everyone working remotely thank god for zoom the amount of work produced by staff and volunteers has been incredible all working to support the dental community including you as students daily new information comes along that changes the decisions that leadership has to make from one day to the next we pivot as needed to keep members updated as best impossible with ever-changing public health mandates like the recent vaccination and testing requirements i'm most proud of the work between cda the dental school deans and students last spring that led to the adoption of the mannequin-based exam so the graduates of 2020 could take boards and begin their dental practices the mannequin exam will now be the standard something for which we have lobbied for years collaboration at its best in july dr natasha he helped us kicked off a discussion about diversity equity inclusion and belonging with the cda board of trustees as dentists it's not just about treating patients but having the courage and ethics to be aware of social injustices and needs of our communities i look forward to further discussion with cda leaders as to what having a dei policy means to us and collaboration with the dental school deans to determine how cda can do their part to increase the underrepresented groups within our profession and ultimately serve patients in these communities so what does belonging to the california dental association mean to you in california eligibility for coverage through the dentist insurance company is exclusive to cda members this dentist-centric insurance provides strong protection for you and your practice our legislative advocacy team works relentlessly to secure dentist safety licensure productivity and well-being members can save and learn with access to cda presents dentistry's most exciting educational event and this is happening in just a few weeks at the moscone center i urge you come join us network with your peers see exhibitors and meet dentists from all over california see one of the best membership benefits in action and lastly membership provides a network of colleagues through which we can develop lifetime friendships i can truly say my dearest friends i have met through cda and this profession can sometimes be pretty hectic we're there to support and help each other and that is a benefit with immeasurable value as you put on this white coat today let it be a symbol of your support for each other throughout your careers may remind you that you need to embrace opportunities for lifelock learning lifelong learning so that you your team and patients and the dental profession will benefit that white coat will inspire trust and confidence in you as a leader you will lead your teams for decisions to success your patience to planning their treatment and your heart through the joy you find in providing care for others lead by example always do what is right and abide by the dental code of ethics with covid most of us are wearing disposable or washable surgical gowns and no longer wearing our white coats i ask you if you do not wear it hang it where you can see it let your white coat be a reminder of your commitment to your patients and our profession each and every day and finally i hope it will remind you that we cannot live our lives for ourselves alone but rather by making our own lives richer and more fulfilling by giving of ourselves thank you [Applause] thank you dr tippett white thanks for your leadership and the great role model that you are for all of our students and um for everyone here at the dakota school we really appreciate it it is now my pleasure to introduce nick farooqi jd esquire he is part he is a practicing attorney and an educator and has served as faculty of law and associate dean at lincoln law school in san jose from 2007 to 2020. he's associate professor faculty member and content coordinator for the professionalism and ethics curriculum here at the digoni school of dentistry since 2016. we're really pleased that he can join us today during the white coat ceremony and please join me in welcoming professor nick ferrugi for his presentation on ethics in the dental profession [Applause] as you gathered by the introduction i'm an honorary member of the white coat society here because i'm not a dentist but i'm an attorney and it's really a pleasure to finally after a year of being away from our students to see them here in person student doctors today is a symbolic day of pride and right of passage for you a passage into belonging to the ranks of your future profession remember that you still have some distance to go before you can be a licensed and practicing doctor of dentistry the white coat ceremony usually marks the start of a point in your journey when you earn the awesome responsibility of treating real people patients other human beings who place their trust in you to do the right thing trusting you to do the right thing is the heart of what your ethical obligations embody i hope you'll enjoy to stay along with your family and friends and all of us here this ceremony is symbolic but symbols are to be taken seriously for the meaning they intend to convey a great part of meaning and symbolism in a white coat is that like all professional markings it is about a privilege and not a right a healthcare professional earns the privilege to enjoy a presumptive trust from the patients trust with their body and their mind depending on the ailment and need the patient has and reliance on the knowledge and discipline of the provider and today i asked myself if i was to give you only a few pieces of key advice about ethical practice of dentistry what would they be and here are the ones i chose to share with you first confirm your commitment and intend to always act ethically and professionally intent is the necessary stage before any conscious action intent foreshadows your decisions and your following practice be ethical with intention remember that your professional life here at our school reflects the head heart and hands philosophy the school embraces and what do we mean by heart it can have many meanings formal words we use are professionalism ethical behavior empathy and communication skills ethics in your profession arises and tribes in your heart supported by your knowledge in your mind and the skills you practice with your hands remember this and deeply adopt it because without this you will be no more than greatly skilled technicians and business people what makes you complete professional is the trust your patients will place in you every time they sit in an operatory chair and place themselves with vulnerability in your hands you will have a fiduciary duty to each of them every time they come for a visit to your office lead with your heart remember the oath you take today and when you finally become a doctor of dentistry is inspired by a hippocratic oat you will be doctors the wars of that oat have changed over time but it's intense and hard have not i will quote a select few words from the modern hippocratic oath relevant to ethical practice code i will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science and that warmth sympathy and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug i will not be ashamed to say i know not nor will i fail to call my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery i will respect the privacy of my patients for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know these words speak to both humility and honesty these words speak to your duty of trust in keeping confidence of your patience if you accept the oath you take that shows your intent to act ethically and professionally but what enables you to know how to practice ethically and professionally is using the decision making systems you learn in the school so remember the first and most foundational definition i shared with you in class a simple but important one ethics is the systematic study of right and wrong on his face this seems very simple in practice you will be challenged each and every day remember an ethical choice is not always between two benign and good alternatives you will be challenged ethical dilemmas will force you to choose between bad and worse in many cases you need to be ready to make those difficult decisions you will have to abide by many codes some of which are strictly about ethics and professional behavior in my closing i can remind you of the school's code of ethics i can mention cda's code or recommend as i have in class to study the ada code today speaking to student doctors i saw it proper to close by remarking about american dental education association statement on professionalism in education the normative principles of competence acquiring and maintaining the high level of special knowledge technical ability and professional behavior necessary for the provision of clinical care to patients and for effective functioning in the dental education environment fairness demonstrating consistency and even-handedness in dealing with others integrity being honest and demonstrating congruence between one's values words and actions responsibility being accountable for one's actions and recognizing and acting upon the special obligations to others that one assumes in joining a profession respect honoring the words with the worth of others service mindedness acting for the benefit of the patients and the public we serve and approaching those served with compassion thank you enjoy your day you all deserve it it's a pleasure to see all of you in person [Applause] thank you professor fergie i really appreciate those words and reminders so now the big moment that our students have been waiting for i'd like to invite our executive associate dean professor eve cuny to the podium to announce our white coat recipients the group practice leaders and dr gallagher will be uh presenting the white coats and as a reminder we do need to keep our masks on based on the health orders and we there's no handshaking so i apologize i won't be able to shake your hands as as you come across the stage so uh professor cunnings thank you welcome everybody and especially congratulations to the dds and ids class of 2022. it's really my honor to be with you here during this recognition of an important milestone in your professional education i'll be calling out the names and we'll start with the dds class of 2022. eileen abdullahi [Applause] adam acevedo [Music] vikrei alamari [Music] christian allen [Music] [Music] asadi [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
