I flew back to London from Cape Town the next night and I remember a very lovely past year - looking after me I was all over the place just getting through lots of tissues and crying and crying and then I thought look I've got to get a grip here and do something useful for Diana and I decided the first thing it needed to be done was to find somebody to write and deliver the eulogy and I had an address book and I went through it and I got to the end and I thought none of them are right and then I had this sort or fulfilling that it's gonna have to be me I was putting it off for a couple of days and and then I woke up very very early on the Wednesday morning between the death and the funeral and I just sat down and wrote it and it took about an hour and a half and just came pouring out really actually it's interesting I you know sounds rather sort of bizarre but I did go to Diana's coffin the day after I'd written it and and I read it to her in there and I did sort of feel a sort of positive energy come through that somehow she approved what I was going to say [Music] the most important thing for me was the obvious reality that my sister wasn't around anymore and I wanted to speak for her honestly and truly and fully and that was it really that's all I tried to do and and it felt right after I've written it you know I [Music] wasn't trying to attack anyone else I mean I just wanted to stipulate what a thoroughly wonderful person we just lost and if in in comparison to that other people felt badly about it well that was really not my issue I was trying to just be loyal to Donna [Music] obviously nobody wants to speak at their siblings funeral especially wanted to so young but the other thing was - I was I didn't know this would be the case I was looking directly at William and Harry across her coffin as I delivered it and that was very tough in fact in the final paragraph but run out of energy and almost out of oxygen and it sounds rather overdramatic but I had such a tightness overcoming me as I spoke because of the emotion that by the end and that last paragraph I can still remember actually I had to punch each word each syllable out of the base of my stomach with my muscles because that was the only way I could get it out really and it was tough you know I practiced a few times to myself before and even in practice addressing my nephews about their mother was incredibly hard but to see them both there was that was tough [Music] by far the hardest part of that day was not delivering my speech but it was walking behind my sister's coffin with her sons [Music] particularly in those days Harris's tiny little thing and I was just so worried you know what a trauma for a little chap to have walked behind his mum's body is just awful and actually I'd tried to stop that happening to be honest and it was very tough you know that was a very long walk I don't know how long it was I think it's about half an hour and it was traumatizing because the you couldn't look left or right you're walking through a tunnel of grief and there were thousands and thousands and thousands of people and you walk through a different section and there'll be a different reaction so the first I remember once you could walk for 300 paces through silence and then somebody would start wailing and people would start really sobbing and crying out really lovely things to William and Harry but it was very very emotional and I just thought goodness I hope they can get through this you know and I was amazed they did so well I mean really incredible [Music] you
