kind in the abundance of your mercies look upon us in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit amen peace be with you and with your spirit to prepare ourselves for the celebration let us acknowledge our sins and ask lord for pardon and for strength lord jesus you came to reconcile us to the father and to one another lord have mercy lord have mercy you heal the wounds of our sin and division christ have mercy christ have mercy you intercede for us to the father lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray almighty ever living god with compassion on our weakness and ensure us your protection by stretching forth the right hand of your majesty through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the prophet isaiah the lord says this if you do away with the yoke the clenched feast the wicked wood if you give your breath to the hungry and relief to the oppressed your light will rise in the darkness and your shadows become like noon the lord will always guide you giving you relief in the in desert places he will give strength to your bones and you shall be like a watered garden like a spring of water whose waters never run dry you will rebuild the ancient ruins build up on the old foundations you will be called bridge mender restorer of ruined houses if you refrain from trampling the sabbath and doing business on the holy day if you call the sabbath delightful and the day secret to the lord honorable if you honor it by abstaining from travel from doing business and from gossip then you shall find happiness in the lord and i will lead you triumphant over the heights of the land i will feed you on the heritage of jacob your father for the mouth of the lord has spoken the word of the lord thanks be to god the responsible psalm our response is show me lord your way so are the word of god the lord be with you and with your spirit reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you oh lord jesus notice a tax collector levi by named sitting by the customs house and said to him follow me and leaving everything he got up and followed him in his honor levi held a great reception in his house and with them at table was a large gathering of tax collectors and others the pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples and said why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners jesus said to them in reply it is not those who are well who need the doctor but the sick i have not come to call the virtues but sinners the repentance the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ indeed my dear brothers and sisters the team of the season of land at least the first part of the season of land is the call to repentance repentance means to turn away from our sins this is the negative presentation of the message of land because not many of us are very keen in repentance it is difficult to speak to people and asking them to repent unless you are able to present them something that is better than what they already have what is the use of having two birds in the bush when we already have one bird in our hands that is why is very important for us that for many of us we don't really understand the positive side of the season of land many of us think that the season of land is a time when we give up joy give up celebration and make our life miserable through penance modification this is far from the positive message of land but this is often misunderstood even the gospel which is basically the good news is often presented as the bad news on thursday the gospel jesus invites us that if we want to follow him then we must take up the cross after him that the man who wants to save his life must lose his life in order to save it the teachings of christ whether it's the beatitudes by the sermon on the mount the call to love our enemies they are very difficult to follow even the apostles could not accept the message of jesus when he spoke about his theft for what could the dead messiah do for the apostles they were still thinking in worldly terms of worldly powers of material favors and earthly glory that was why saint peter rejected jesus even after he confessed that he is the christ because he could not accept jesus call to self-sacrifice and eventually martyrdom and yet the truth remains that what is apparently bad news is good news through the death of jesus new life came about through his death on the cross hearts were touched and moved and were converted through his self-sacrifice people came to recognize the love and the mercy of god and that is the reason why in today's first reading from the prophet isaiah isaiah speaks in very positive terms about the call to do parents it is not so much to give up our sins giving out our sins is but a preliminary step what is even more important from the for the prophet isaiah is that we are called to rebuild ancient rings we are called to be restorer of green houses and bridge bender in other words isaiah was not so much focused on just the fact that we give up our sins rather what we can do that is why he said if you do it with the yoke the clenched feast the wicked word if you give your breath to the hungry and relief to the oppressed your light will rise in the darkness so it is what we should be doing positively sins always bring about misery in our life sin is destructive sin is a lack of love in the way we relate with others in our words in our conduct rather we are called that during the season of land it's not just abstaining from sin or doing penance but actively doing good and we can see this very clearly in today's gospel that was what jesus did we have the case of levi a tax collector and we are told right at the very outset of the gospel jesus noticed a tax collector levi by name sitting by the customs house levi must have been listening to our lord from afar and jesus could read his heart although he was reached he had plenty of money yet he was not a happy man there was emptiness in his life and was because of the sins that he has committed judging exorbitantly being dishonest and so although he had what he wanted there was no joy there was no peace indeed ill-gotten money would not make us happy at all as it is often said and give you a comfortable bait but there is no way for us to sleep properly in peace and that is the reason why jesus he called levi he could feel the hunger the yearning of levi for greater meaning and purpose in life and so jesus called him and we are told he left everything he got up and followed him it was the confidence the love the acceptance that jesus gave to levi that he could have the courage to leave everything he had his security to follow jesus and that was because levi experienced a liberating joy how do we know that our sins are forgiven how do we know that we are living the fullness of life when we are liberated from our fears from anxieties from our brokenness from our woundedness most of all from unforgiveness in our lives and that is why levi was so happy so liberated that he held a great deception in his house and a clear sign that he was truly liberated was to invite his conference his colleagues tax collectors and others to the house had a great celebration he was no longer stingy and he called his friends and his colleagues because levi he knew that in the eyes of jesus they would be accepted it was a celebration levi was not just liberated from fears but from a very narrow interpretation of the laws that is why in today's gospel we have tax collectors and jesus the scribes and the pharisees were complaining to his disciples why do you eat and dream with tax selectors and sinners they asked his disciples for them a holy man a rabbi to mix with text selectors and sinners would make him unclean because these are the ones that jesus should have avoided but the intention of jesus is clear he said it is on those who are well who need the doctor but the sick i have not come to call the virtues but sinners to repentance jesus knew that the only way to help sinners to repent is to be with them to be in their company to reach out to them to make them feel loved and accepted the million feel welcome but that doesn't mean to say jesus compromise his values like many of us do jesus although he accepted them as persons as sons and daughters of god jesus is not condoned what they did and that is how jesus treated sinners he came to enlighten us and so my dear brothers and sisters today we are called to do the same we are called to be more positive in the way we look at the season of land we are called to be people who bring life to others so it is not about giving up our sins i think perhaps we should be more positive the best way to give up our sins is to do good that is why isaiah says your light will rise in the darkness and your shadows become like noon when we do good evil will ultimately be diminished instead of forking focusing too much on our evil we become crippled when we focus too much on our sins we become over scrupulous and we feel even more guilty and condemned ourselves rather we should be like jesus proactively reaching out to others feeling with people caring for them and in this way my dear brothers and sisters then we come to realize that the giving up of our sins is really for fuller life with christ amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for true goodness you this bread we offer you fruit of the earth and book of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever blessed love you lord god for creation for true goodness your this wine we offer you through the divine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual dream blessed be god forever pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name foul good and the good of all his holy church except we pray o lord the sacrifice of conciliation and praise and granted cleansed by his working we may offer minds well pleasing to you through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is through the right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god who have given your children a sacred time for the renewing and purifying of their hearts they're free from disordered affections they may so do the things of this passing world as they hold rather to the things that are eternally and you and so before the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of host heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body we should be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant we should be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memory of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that they have held us worthy to bring your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking in the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope me unworthy servant and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and only have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god we blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through humanity men in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command informed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said your apostles peace i leave to you my peace i give to you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen of life and so as i prepare myself even unworthy as i am to receive you your body and blood in this holy eucharist i pray for the same grace that you give to divine to repent and most of all to be able to surrender myself and to follow you trusting in your love in your mercy because you are the way the truth and the life amen let us pray now reach you the gift of heavenly life we pray o lord that what remains for us a mystery in his present life may be for us to help to reach eternity through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit abide graciously o lord with your
