fernandez joe suarez michael anthony and for the souls in purgatory my dear brothers and sisters you're all very welcome to our celebration today ash wednesday the beginning of our journey through lent unto easter and then unto pentecost this is a very special time in the church's year it is in fact a magical time it is a time when we remember how loved we are in god's eyes that nothing else matters but god and god alone and his love and everything that can distract us from that has to be eliminated and so i invite you into this celebration as we call on the name of love which we will soon bless ourselves in in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace and peace of our lord jesus christ the love of god our father and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit let us spring grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up the battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the prophet joel yet even now declares the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning and rend your hearts and not your garments return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and he relents over disaster who knows whether he will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him a grain offering and a drink offering for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion consecrate a fast call a solemn assembly gather the people consecrate the congregation assemble the elders gather the children even nursing infants let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber between the vestibule and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare your people oh lord and make not your heritage a reproach a byword among the nations why should they say among the peoples where is your god then the lord became jealous for his land and had pity on his people the word of the lord thanks peter god our response to the reading will [Music] be have mercy on us oh lord for we have sinned all together have mercy on us oh lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god according to your merciful love according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions wash me completely from my iniquity and cleanse me from my for sins have sinned my transgressions truly i know them my sin is always before me against you you alone have i sinned what is evil in your sight i have done create a pure heart for me o god renew a steadfast spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence take not your holy spirit from me have mercy [Music] restore in me the joy of your salvation sustain in me a willing spirit o lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise [Music] [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brethren we are ambassadors for christ god making his appeal through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin so that in him we might become righteousness of god working together with him then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in a favorable time i listen to you and in a day of salvation i have helped you behold now is the favorable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god let us stand and prepare our hearts for the gospel [Music] glory and praise to you o christ king of eternal glory [Music] my brothers and sisters the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to saint matthew glory be to you o lord at that time jesus said to his disciples beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them for then you will have no reward from your father who is in heaven thus when you give to the needy sound no trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may be praised by others truly i say to you they have received their reward but when you give to the needy do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your giving may be in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and when you pray you must not pray like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners that they may be seen by others truly i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and when you fast do not look grumpy and gloomy like the hypocrites for they disguise their faces that their fasting may be seen by others truly i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you the good news the gospel of the lord praise to you o lord jesus christ rend your hearts and not your garments return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love these are the words the prophet joel addresses to his people at his time but they are in a sense our anthem our slogan our theme as we begin our journey through lent focusing on that most glorious day the resurrection rend your hearts and not your garments return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love the call to rend our hearts and not our garments very often we think lent is about renting our garments in other words the external manifestations of apparent sorrow for sin we're pretty good at externals but lent is not about externals it has nothing to do with the external it is a deep and challenging call to rend one's heart that which is within which is far more challenging and difficult than the external what you mean by rend your heart that's a very striking vivid image to tear one's heart as even more striking when you rend and tear you open the heart the internal the internal seat of our lives and we ask ourselves just who is seated on that internal seat who's occupying that seat or what is occupying that seat in the course of our journey through the year we realize that there are many people or things that are occupying that seat or perhaps a big eagle and rending the heart means stripping the eagle from that seat it means stripping those things which are frivolous and which have occupied that important seat of our inner being or perhaps persons and making room [Music] making space in our heart for god and his love making room making space in our heart for things that truly matter that really make us happy making room making space in our heart for god's favorite ones the sick the poor the elderly the suffering and so mother church invites us during the season of lent beginning from today to enter into a process and i am saying this it is a difficult but joyful process it is a challenging but magical process it is a tough but immensely rewarding process when we strip hearts and make room for god mother church says through the gospel of matthew make room for god in your heart through prayer now most of us think we have to say a lot of prayers during lent that's not true because very often we can be saying a lot of prayers but not praying to pray means to say every day lord i'm giving you my time to thank you i'm giving you my time to seek your strength to live the life of your son jesus lord i am giving you my time to intercede for those who are suffering and in trouble our holy father pope francis in his message for lend 2022 invites all of us to sow seeds of good works and one important seed which we can sow is praying for the suffering praying for those in trouble praying for those in difficulty when i pray i'm saying god you are important in my life your love is the essence of my life he's occupying that seat the second is fasting again it's not about externals which we're pretty good at and all of us think yeah it's time lens has come around it's time to lose some weight it's time to give up things what shall i give up and so trim my figure it's nothing to do with this fasting is something very internal it's about acknowledging what are those things that have occupied center space in my heart maybe it's the ego pride maybe it's lavishness maybe it's procrastination maybe it's harshness maybe it's excessive anything in excessive could be food could be drink could be shopping could be pleasure to acknowledge what things have taken center stage in my heart i need to strip that so that the things that truly matter occupy my heart namely kindness gentleness sweetness understanding compassion feeling with if i am giving up food the pain that suffering people go through hungry people go through and so saying i am one with you that is solidarity it's very internal it is not about the external when we do this it's challenging but it's immensely rewarding there's an immense inner peace that floods our being and third almsgiving almsgiving is not about as the gospel says giving and then wanting your name announced on the pulpit giving and wanting blacks put about your name almsgiving is about saying there are poor who have nothing what can i do for them there are sick who are suffering can i visit or help there are elderly who are lonely can i reach out there is suffering and tragedy in the world right now in ukraine can i intercede for my ukrainian brothers and sisters this is what almsgiving is about being of a center is about making space in my heart for the suffering the sick the elderly the poor then lent becomes suddenly a magical time [Music] land becomes a stupendous time then becomes a wonderful time my heart belongs to god and there is nothing better than that and his love which is mercy graciousness and full of compassion then lent becomes special because i become sweeter kinder gentle understanding land becomes unbelievable because the poor bless me the sick thank me the elderly give me their blessing and so my dear brothers and sisters let us begin this magical time lent this stupendous time lent this unbelievable moment of grace that god gives us to grow in awareness of his love his mercy his compassion that must take center stage in our life in this journey we begin today and so as you go home let's begin with a simple slogan lent magic lent stupendous lent wonderful because i am making space in my heart for god for things that truly make me happy for the poor the sick and the suffering amen kindly rise dear brethren let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitence oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful year to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mysteries of your son at easter who lives and reigns forever and ever amen blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this bread to offer which earth has given and human hands have made made become for us our spiritual food blessed be god forever blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this wine to offer fruit of the vine and work of human hands may it become for us our spiritual drink blessed be god forever pray brothers and sisters this your sacrifice and mine may be acceptable to god our heavenly and almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise in your refuse name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through your works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion and resurrection of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord's be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful people await the sacred paschal feasts with joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with all the angels and saints with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glorious with one voice we acclaim [Music] [Music] full of your glory blessed is he who comes who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirits upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion jesus took bread and giving thanks he broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended jesus took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant it will be shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] resurrection [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you held us worthy to be in your presence and to minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and the blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and ozil our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virtue of mary mother of god saint joseph a spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coerced to eternal life and praise and glorify you through your son jesus in christ o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever at the savior's command and formed by his divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you set your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of jesus be with each of you today and with your spirit let us share with one another the peace of christ lamb of god who takes away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god takes away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god who takes away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the graciousness of god the amazing mercy tenderness and abundance of redemption jesus the lamb of god who comes to rule our hearts and takes center stage there how blessed are we to receive the lamb of god into our hearts lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word shall be healed spiritual communion prayer my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you about all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen let us pray may the sacrament we have received sustain us oh lord that our lenten fast may be pleasing to you and be for us a healing remedy through christ our lord amen before we pray our prayer to our mother perpetual help i want to call your attention to our holy father pope francis's very urgent and important request to pray today as a day of intense and that's his word intense prayer and intense fasting for our brothers and sisters in the ukraine going through immense difficulty pain and suffering with the war i want to make another very special request we have many redemptorist communities all over the ukraine and even as i talk to you my own redemptorist fathers and brothers in the ukraine are struggling without essential supplies without heating but reaching out magnanimously to their people in war raid shelters bunkers and doing their best despite their own communities churches and houses being bombed so spare a thought and keep in your prayers today the people of ukraine but also our redemptress family in the ukraine as you and i spend this day with the lord at the center of our hearts fasting feeling the suffering without food in union and in solidarity with suffering people in the ukraine let us turn to our mother perpetual help and seek her intercession mother of perpetual help woman of eternal hope your wordless gaze tells us so much about you knowing eyes look upon us with tender love the slight bend of your head reveals such maternal concern while your left hand supports the child your right hand is ready to receive us too just as he feels the beating of your heart so you encourage us to lead a life of hope and holiness just as a sandal will fall on your lap through your intercession may god pick us up as we stumble and fall never let us be parted from you and your son jesus lady of love you invite us to place our hand where his fingers touch yours near a heart of endless hope so that we may be united often in prayer here on earth and joined forever with you in heaven amen the lord's be with you and with your spirit by your heads for god's blessing pour out a spirit of compunction oh god on all those who bow before your majesty and by your mercy may they merit the rewards you promise to all those who do penance through christ our lord amen the blessing of almighty god come upon you and remain with you the father the son and the holy spirit amen as we begin the season of lent let's go out with joy in this magical season making space making room in our hearts for god for things that matter for the poor the sake the elderly and the suffering let us join in the recessional hymn [Music] i have decided to follow jesus i have decided to follow jesus i have decided to follow jesus no turning back turning back the wall behind me the
