christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the prophet jeremiah the lord says this a curse on the man who puts his trust in man who relies on things of the flesh whose heart turns from the lord he is like dry scrub in the wastelands if good comes he has no eyes for it he settles in the patched places of the wilderness a salt land uninhabited a blessing on the man who puts his trust in the lord with the lord for his hope he is like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream when the heat comes it feels no alarm its foliage stays green it has no worries in a year of drought and never ceases to bear fruit the word of the lord happy are they who hope in the lord and how they who hope in the lord happy indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor lingers in the ways way of sinners nor sits in the company of scorners but whose delight is the law of the lord and who ponders his law day and night happy are they who hope in the lord he is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters that yields its fruit in in due season and whose leaves shall never fade and all that he does shall prosper happy are they who hope in the lord not so are the wicked not so for they like winnowed chaff shall be driven away by the wind for the lord guards the way of the just but the way of the wicked leads to doom happy are they who hope in the lord a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians if christ raised from the dead is what has been preached how can some of you be saying that there is no resurrection of the dead for if the dead are not raised christ has not been raised and if christ has not been raised you are still in your sins and what is more serious all who have died in christ have perished if our hope in christ has been for this life only we are the most unfortunate of all people the christ has in fact been raised from the dead the first fruits of all who have fallen asleep the word of the lord please stand alleluia rejoice and be glad your reward is great in heaven hallelujah the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus came down 12 and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was the large gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of judea and from jerusalem and from the coastal region of tyre and siddon who had come to hear him and be cured of their diseases then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said how happy are you who are poor yours is the kingdom of god happy of you who are hungry now you shall be satisfied happy you who weep now you shall laugh happy are you when people hate you drive you out abuse you denounce your name as criminal on account of the son of man rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy for then your reward will be great in heaven this was the way their ancestors treated the prophets but alas for you who are rich you are having your constellation now i'll ask for you have your fill now you shall go hungry i'll ask for you who laugh now you shall mourn and weep i'll ask for you when the world speaks well of you this was the way their ancestors treated the false prophets the gospel of the lord in my youth there was a period in my family when we had much and then we went through another period when we had almost nothing and attract tragic things can happen to which you look back and say we wish those things didn't happen and yet as i look back it's probably one of the best things that ever happened to me same kind of experience happened when i had cancer about 16 years ago and had to have a serious operation and people have asked me what was the experience of that and my answer has been and still remains the same in many ways it's the best thing that happened to me because out of difficulty we in fact learn many things and without difficulty i don't think we learn anything other than what we can find in books and if what we find in books is about the human condition those books are meaningless to us unless what they write about is somehow part of our experience today we have the beatitudes according to saint luke which are very different to the ones which we're more familiar with the familiar ones are those in matthew about chapter six and the setting is different also matthews is in a high spot luke's are in a low spot so i leave that for the scripture scholars to work out what was really happening there but there are three fundamental things in today's beatitudes happy are you who are poor happier you who are hungry happier you who weep which is very different to the from from the other ones we know which are blessed are the pure in heart blessed are the peacemaker they're the ones you know they're the ones that are in matthew's gospel but today's gospel is is in fact quite different and jesus is not trying to comfort the poor or comfort the hungry or comfort those who are mourning or in grief he is saying something far more profound to them he is saying to those who are poor because you know poverty you will know the kingdom of god to those who are hungry because you know what hunger is you will know what satisfaction is to those who weep and are unhappy because you know that you will know what happiness is so let's turn the beatitude around the other side and consider it if we always have enough to eat or in other words if we've never been hungry i think we can say we will never value what food is if you've always laughed and been happy you will never value your happiness and if you've always had in abundance you will never value it because you don't understand it so i think the first thing that jesus is saying in the beatitudes is we learn from comparison we learn from that distinction but he he marks it out more powerfully only by not having would he be grateful for what you do have because perhaps what he's beginning to point to in fact is the importance of the virtue or or the or the gift of being grateful if you have never ever wanted for something you will never be grateful for what you've got if you've never been without food you will never be grateful for the food you've got and even more importantly if you've never been unhappy or wept you will never be grateful for the life that you've got i think this is the first thing that he's saying to us in these beatitudes but it's saying something even more than that because poverty the experience of not having points to something else for us the experience of hunger points to something else for us and the experience of sadness points to something else as well and it makes us begin to realize the reality of our human condition which is grounded in and defined by our desires what we truly desire in fact is what defines you and we need to go beyond this we're not defined by food or possessions or by parties we are defined only by that which is god and in not having we often recognize what is more important when you are poor and don't have much by way of possessions you begin to recognize in fact that life is more than this and the desire of your heart can move out beyond what you don't have to what it is that you as a human being really need and really desire that of course is only really two things love and god who is the source of love so in today's beatitudes we're asked to recognize that in the absence we begin to realize what it is that we want and we can become grateful then for what we have and in looking more deeply we can begin to see that the defining desires of our life are truly only recognized when we don't have saint john of the cross says unless you deny your desires you'll never know what it is that you truly desire so let's listen to today's gospel take to heart and try to live the look and beatitudes let's stand and profess our faith i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the celebration we acclaim holy [Music] is he who comes in the name of the lord you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of face we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our
