pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the first book of samuel so in the dark david and abishay made their way towards the force where they found saul asleep inside the camp his spear struck in the ground beside his head with abner and the troops lying around him then abhishe said to david today god has put your enemy in your power so now let me pin him to the ground with his own spear just one stroke i will not need to strike him twice david answered abhishek do not kill him for who can lift his hand against the lord's anointed and be without guilt david took the spear and the pitcher of water from beside saul's head and they made off no one saw no one knew no one woke up they were all asleep for deep sleep from the lord had fallen on them david crossed to the other side and halted on the top of the mountain a long way off there was a wide space between them david then called out here is the king's spear let one of the soldiers come across and take it the lord repays everyone for his uprightness and loyalty today the lord put you in power but i would not raise my hand against the lord's anointed the word of the the lord the lord is kind and merciful my soul give thanks to the lord all my being bless his holy name my soul give thanks to the lord and never forget all his blessings the lord is kind and merciful it is he who forgives all your guilt who heals every one of your ills who redeems your life from the grave who crowns you with love and compassion the lord is kind and merciful the lord is compassion and love slow to anger and rich in mercy he does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our faults the lord is kind and merciful as far as the east is from the west so far does he remove our sins as a father has compassion on his sons the lord has pity on those who fear him the lord is kind and merciful a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians the first man adam as chris scripture says became a living soul but the last adam has become a life-giving spirit that is first the one with the soul not the spirit and after that the one with the spirit the first man being from the earth is earthly by nature the second man is from heaven as this earthly man was so are we on earth and as the heavenly man is so are we in heaven and we who have been modeled on the earthly man will be modeled on the heavenly man the word of the lord please stand to greet the gospel hallelujah hallelujah i give you a new commandment love one another as i have loved you hallelujah the lord be with you reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus said to his disciples i say this to you while listening love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who treat you badly the man who slaps you on the cheek present the other cheek too to the man who takes your cloak from you do not refuse your tunic give to everyone who asks you do not ask for property back from the man who robs you treat others as you would like them to treat you if you love those who love you what thanks can you expect even sinners love those who love them and if you do good for those who do good to you what thanks can you expect even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount instead love your enemies and do good and land without any hope of return you'll have a great reward and you will be the sons of the most high for he himself is kind and grateful and the wicked be compassionate as your father is compassionate do not judge and you will not be judged yourselves do not condemn and you will not be condemned yourselves grant pardon and you will be pardoned give and there will be gifts for you a full measure pressed down shaken together and running over will be poured into you because the amount you measure out will be the amount you get back the gospel of the lord i can remember as a young person being disappointed about things not being disappointed about things that i didn't have but by being disappointed because i often thought that people didn't respond or didn't do things according to my expectations and i think as a young man i was probably the most horrible friend a person could have because a large part of my experience of friendship revolved around what i in a confusion manner expected of other people and in fact the fault was not in the other person the fault was lied very squarely in my lap because i had no right to expect anything of anybody and in so many ways that in fact i think typifies and defines so many relationships because if we do expect something the best thing god can do is dash that expectation the issue of expectation comes in very powerfully in the first part of today's gospel when jesus says to people give to anyone who asks and don't ask for your property back if you give something and behind that is is the extraordinary challenge which she presents to the people who live according to base human expectations if a man slaps you you'd expect slap him back and he says no a man slaps you turn your cheek let him slap the other one if a man takes your cloak give him your tunic as well whereas normal humor would be a man's take my coat i'd better get it back off him give to everyone who asks and do not ask your property back from the man who robs you this is quite extraordinary teaching it's a teaching which the jewish people of the time would never have understood quite simply because people today don't understand it because on one level jesus is trying to say you need to break from the expectations which govern your life so much of our lives are governed by expectations which are being given to us by society which we have in place because of our own selfishness and jesus is not simply teaching this as as a radical rabbi but he's preaching this on account of what comes at the end of the gospel and what's at the end of the gospel in fact is more significant than the revolutionary first part of the gospel because the reason for this is this because you're meant to be compassionate as your father is compassionate and i'm quite sure that many of the listeners as they heard this especially those who were familiar with the law the prophets and the psalms they would have melted when they heard this because this for them would have been about one of the most challenging things that jesus ever spoke to them and it's basically saying your heavenly father gives without expectation your heavenly father loves but that expectation you insult god and he turns his cheek to allow you to insult him again he doesn't strike you down and jesus says your father is compassionate that way you're meant to be compassionate that way also so in this first line he gives his reason for the revolutionary sayings at the beginning of today's gospel and with this short phrase i believe many of the scribes and pharisees would have understood what jesus was saying but we need to take it further because it's saying more than that it's saying something quite extraordinary because jesus is not saying simply saying that you need to live without expectations because that's the way god is towards us he's not quite clearly if god had expectations of me i don't think i'd be alive now i should have been struck down decades ago i suppose that's true of all of us but jesus goes on to say not only does your father have no expectations and loves you with compassion but you're meant to love with that compassion as well and that in many ways is is one of the most wonderful things jesus ever says because he says to us you are meant to be like god you are meant to have the attitudes that god has you're meant to love as god loves you're meant to be merciful as god is merciful you're meant to forgive and that's part of other parts of the gospel you're meant to forgive just as god forgives you're meant to be compassionate because god is compassionate and why all of these things because you're made in the image and likeness of god and each of us is called to allow god to become alive in us so that the presence of god is a walking living presence as it is truly in jesus christ but in each of us because we live in with and give the passion the compassion of god to others that the as an extraordinary thing is the foundation of the christian call i ask you to read today's gospel to listen to jesus to be challenged by the revolutionariness of it but to be moved by the reality which he places before us we are made in the image and likeness of god and therefore we must love and live this compassion let's stand and profess our faith i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he has set it into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen and let us bring our prayers to our loving father for the church in her universal ministry of mercy and forgiveness let us pray to the lord for community and national leaders that they will desire peace and govern with mercy and compassion let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer ignite the fire within us to reach out to those on the fringes of our society we pray that foundations of the world and have arranged the changing of times and seasons you formed us in your own image and set us over the whole world in all its wonder to rule in your name over all you've made and forever praise you in your mighty works through christ our lord and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we acclaim holy [Music] is he who comes in the name of the lord you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope me your unworthy servant and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostle saint teresa saint john of the cross and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art of heaven come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily
