all right people catfish dave here the title this video is catfishing for dummies pulling planer boards the reason it's called that is i am a dummy i ain't never pulled no stinking planer board i ain't got a clue about it my shout out for the week goes to surviving with 8-12 catfishing he sent me a little video that kind of explained it uh joseph welton is his name and he cat fishes out of kentucky i've said it before i'll say it again if you can catch big catfish in kentucky you're a good catfisherman either way when it comes to planter boards i'm a dummy i'm here in fort loudoun reservoir i've got one kind of hooked up and i don't even know if it's a left side or a right side or what's going on so we're gonna work our way out of this cove i'm gonna drag one straight off the back of the boat for now and i'm going to throw this stinkin planer board out there and figure out how it works if i figure out how it works we're going to throw a bait on it too if i don't catch catfish hey this is fort loud and it ain't nothing new but either way i'm here to learn because when it comes to planer boards i'm a dummy what hurts is i've even got my name on a planer board and i don't even know how to use it these boards are by bcat boards i've heard these are good boards if you ever know how to use these things uh it's got one clip in the back that keeps this thing attached to your line and the idea here is this clip has a tension knob and you kind of set it you kind of want it to release when the fish hits the bait otherwise you're going to be pulling the planer board in and have to release it yourself you don't want it so loose that it comes loose while you're dragging there is a screw on here to adjust the tension i have already adjusted the tension maybe too tight i don't even know if i got this thing on here right so we're going to set the trolling motor and find out if it looks like i got it right we're going to add a bait throw it out drag out of this cove and just sit and wait we're going to see what happens man one thing i don't need on here is this round weight we're gonna put a dragon weight on i've never drugged this cove never been in this cove it looked kind of nasty to me on my old fishy finder thing there so let's see what happens man see what happens this pops loose like this here the idea is you get a desired amount of line out and then you attach this once you've got the desired amount of line out and i don't know if it's going to pull to the left or to the right that i'm fixing to find out once you get this thing on and let it out at that point the more line you let out of your reel the farther it gets away from the boat allowing you to make a bigger spread of the water system so let's see what happens i'm going to set this trolling motor i still ain't learned how to use the eye autopilot yet i'm a dummy when it comes to that too all this is new but we gonna do it anyway here we go i gotta put the other one together still we gonna get at least one working if everything works out i'm not breaking my lines off we may get two working we may be dragging four baits before the day's over with i don't know it's catfish dave show so we got to do something okay we're going to slow this way down way down to about there see what happens here see if this thing is a left or right board i don't know yet i ain't got a clue obviously that's a right board there she goes that's obviously the right side i'm sure that has to do with the direction of that rod i've got also i'm not sure what it's got to do with the more i do it the more i'll figure it out we're moving there he goes to the right side of the boat hey check it out now that i believe i've got this down on how it works i'm going to go ahead and put the other one together i believe i may have just had a dang bite you can't get no bite in here this is fort loudoun the reason i came to fort loudoun is i didn't want to be too busy reeling in catfish because i'm trying to figure out how to use these boards where there ain't a lot of cat my luck i'll show up here and actually get on a good bite it's going to the right man check it out all you need to install these bee cat boards they send you the boards all this stuff in a bag and uh got a little raj put on a couple of these ringamajig thingies a couple of them and that little clippy thingy all i needed was this uh small to medium sized phillips screwdriver seems like uh the having the rod on the catfish dave side is what made it to its thing so we're gonna do it the same way on this one put the screw here it's got a plastic metal and it's got a plastic washer metal washer put that here run this back here through that front hole i'm gonna put on the other metal washer i guess this is how you do it and we're gonna put this rod on there and just start screwing her down tighten her on up with the phillips screwdriver now i could say where this would be a pain is when you start getting lines hung up and snagged up so the best place to do this would be where there's not a lot of hang-ups aspires not getting too upset by the end of the day put one of these rings we got to put the release clip on the ring i hope i'm doing this right i'll know by the end of the day and then this goes on this little tube i put on here we got these uh release clip here this ring here we're gonna put that on here then we're gonna put it there's two holes one top one for the roddy thing and then one bottom one for this thing we're going to put it on there it's keeping my bait right now about 20 foot to the right of the boat i can let out more line it'll go 30 feet to the right 40 feet to the right however wide i want to spread this code and i could see if there's not a lot of hang-ups how this could really increase your numbers of fish that you'd caught by the end of the day you could put out as many planer boards as you wanted to and just spread them farther and farther away from the boat so it's a lot of work [Applause] but it would really increase your catch rate as long as you were in an area where there was fish i'm just running small pieces of skipjack today some light drifting weights just keeping it simple uh oh i thought i was hung up for a minute on that one if you ever get hung up and you got all these lines out and you've got to go back to try to pop it loose i could see where this would be a real hassle so i would recommend doing this in places you've already been that you know has got a pretty forgiving bottom let's get this one out there she goes man heading out to the right i'm gonna let this i got that one out about 20 feet i'm gonna let this one out about 30 or 40 feet let's see what happens going 0.5 mile an hour it's slowly working its way out to the left side of the boat well there it is instead of dragging two rods straight out the back of the boat and only covering one small area i got one over here 30 40 feet from the boat one over here 20 foot to the right that's a 50 foot spread instead of a six to eight foot spread like i would be getting out of the back of my boat that's pretty cool i could see in areas where i've been having success dragging baits this would really load fish in the boat they don't take no dummy to figure out that this would catch more fish way on out there that's pretty cool here in fort loudoun reservoir you better be scattering them wide because the fish are far and few between around here this might actually help me find one of the five or six catfish that's in this reservoir for this to work best you need to keep the direction your boat perfectly straight it would be better to go with the wind than against the wind i'm trying to go against the wind right now slowing me down a little more than i want to causing the boars to act a little funny now that we know which way the wind's blowing we know which way to drag these things either way we got them in the water three baits down trying to see if anything's around it's almost spawn here people seeing very few blues i'm seeing mostly flatheads and hey i take one of them too i've obviously had something hit this bait over here and it's knocked that board loose because it was 20 feet from the boat and all sudden it's way to the back so i did see it get a bite so i need to reel that back in and then reattach it oh fish on the right planer board man i thought it was hung up for a minute but obviously not it was a weird bite that was a weird bite right there i guess i got a fish on here it act like it was taking drag here we go oh ah first fish on my uh bee cat uh catfish dave planer board man we'll take that right there especially out of fort loudoun first fish on a planer board mean old fish well hey hey what can i say i ain't no dummy no more i got out here and caught a catfish on a b-cap planer board that was a weird bite i'm not used to seeing that i thought it was hung the rod just steadily went down and down and down right and i'm looking i'm thinking it's hung because it's just kind of like staying there and so i check my speed right because i keep waiting for this thing to pop loose the way it's just staying there i'm thinking i'm not moving well my speed still says 0.5 miles per hour and i'm thinking this thing's messed up how can you be going 0.5 mile per hour when you're stopped well i wasn't stopped that really was a fish it just acted different getting pulled off that planer board and then when he finally got that line tight that rod went down hey there was a fish around right here in fort loudoun reservoir on this uh bee cat planer board thanks to be cat painter boards they just sent them to me i didn't know i was gonna be pulling no planer boards they'll even customize your boards put your name on them whatever you want that fish somehow i don't know how it done it but it completely released this clip and made it easy for the fish to come in i ain't got a clue how it done it but either way we done it with the b-cap planer board then to recast we undo this clip back here completely take it off the line i've got about an hour of camera card time left on here i already filmed another video on this card so [Music] we're gonna make one more run up this creek and see if anything happens then we're gonna call it a day i just wanted to come out here and play with my beat cat planer boards and i'm kind of glad there wasn't too many fish around until i got the thing figured out i've got my camera all funky where you can't even see that other rod over there [Music] oh got one on the back rod you notice as this fish slowed the boat down those planer boards ease their way to the back of the boat the faster you pull the boat the farther they go out to the side this fish kind of slowed the boat down for a minute now they're starting to work their way back out either way second fish for the day in this fished out fort loudoun reservoir where there's more catfishermen than catfish and we're getting a little bit of a either size blue action now the boats work back up to speed and uh my boards are back out to the side i am using a 1.75 ounce drifting stick and uh when i started buying these things i started buying the heavier ones but i've noticed the lighter they are the less chance of them snagging up this one 1.75 ounce is just heavy enough to sink my bait and this three inch peg float so i would rather run a little lighter that causes them to want to bounce up easier and this 1.75 ounce is actually keeping me on the bottom in this slacker back creek system last two bites we've had have been in around 20 foot of water nothing real deep nothing real shallow we've been anywhere from five foot to forty foot and around twenty foot seems to be the magic number so far some guy just commented on my facebook ask me what speed i'm dragging these boards just the same speed i always drag which is 0.5 mile per hour i've hooked them as fast as 0.7 0.5 seems to be the sweet spot for dragging these baits so i'm doing the same with the planer boards right there i'll tell you what so so yo been having some issues out of my trolling motor it wants to say motor not found so i don't know if i've got an issue with the connection or what it's done it several times either way uh that's the second planer board fish let me turn this motor back on real quick either way second fish on a planer board like i say we're getting close to spawn not a lot of fish willing to bite here in this hot afternoon but by spreading the bait man it's allowing me to pick a few up that time the clip didn't release and so i had to release it when it came up to the rod either way it put me on a fish we got a fish in the boat another blue cat on the be cat planer board let go of my thumb we take the back clip clip it to the line that's what keeps it on our line so we don't lose the thing and then we take this clip put her in here lock that dude right there set her in the water as you can see as the boat pulls it takes it out to the right we're going to keep the trolling motor rolling see if we can come up with another bike i could throw another rod out the back but i'm mainly here to try out these planer boards and i've only got two of those i want to see how they work i want to land a couple fish on them and so i'm not worried about the other rod going out the back one's good enough for me out the back for this video if i pulled the tape measure across there from planter board to planter board it's probably about 50 feet i could make that 100 feet if i wanted to i could make it 200 feet if i wanted to the idea is it allows you to drag baits only with a better spread covering more water i'm kind of cruising up the right side of this cove uh on the way in and then i'm gonna cruise out on the other side that way i know i've covered a good portion of the cove and not just coming back to the same spot i already went thinking like a catfisherman we're we're dragging through garbage cove right now the reason it's called that there's some boys that live around here they always fish off that culvert over there and they always leave in all their trash it gets blown and washed into the water i would call it stinky cove because the dead fish they leave laying up on the rocks but to be honest with you they don't catch that many fish and they leave more garbage so we'll call it garbage cove all right people i'm pulling my way out of this cove right now about five or six years ago a guide out of a gaston reservoir named zach royce pretty much made these planer boards popular for catfish i'm sure there are some guys doing it already but he's the guy that made it mainstream in my opinion i always said i'd never do that i'd never do that of course i also said i'd never have a boat next thing you know i got a boat after a while uh vcap board sent me these boards and said hey would you uh try out these boards make a video of these boards so i've had these boards now about two months and just haven't had my boat set up being too busy to where i could actually pull the things finally got a trolling motor finally got my decent rod holders from old hagen grubs at hagen grudge fishing so i come here this afternoon after uh filming another video just to put the things together and give them a shot right here in fort loudoun the blue cap bite is kind of winding down for the spring they're getting ready to go on the nest but either way i got a few out here two were on the planer board if i would have been using these boards a month ago two months ago when i was getting all them fish dragon baits this would have doubled my catch rate either way i got them now and i'm sure you all be seeing more of them come post spawn they simply allow you to get a wider spread of an area while you're dragging bait either way this is a video there was fish in the video that makes it a fishing video this is catfish dave with another one signing out
