if you go in the barn at night you'll see there's a huge rat infestation they're crawling around everywhere and a day for mousetrap Monday we're gonna catch a bunch of those rats and then feed them to wild animals and they catch them we're gonna use a very old-style rat trap one that was first patented in 1896 it's a complicated design that resets itself so even though these traps are 123 years old it's amazing how well they still work I've already posted a video on this trap the mouse version we cut mouse after Mouse but since we're going after rats I'm gonna need something a little bigger something like this oh this thing is heavy but it should do the job now I've been trying to get my hands on one of these rat versions for quite a while but there's a huge problem first of all they're not too common I did buy one on eBay a while back it was in perfect condition with all the original labels it looks like it was never used and I bought it for 140 dollars when the seller contacted me letting me know the shipping cost would be 165 extra dollars I decided not to buy it so I was really disappointed but then a fan from Pennsylvania contacted me he's someone for sell on their local Craigslist for $25 the trap was very worn it looked like it caught a lot of rats over the years but the price was right so I bought it shipping was still over $100 but thanks to a fan from Pennsylvania I was able to get my hands on one you know this is such a crazy design the rat goes inside steps on a teeter-totter the door closes it climbs up goes in a tank and resets itself for the next rat so one after another you can catch them and they drown in the metal pin it's kind of hard to see how it works so I'll do a close-up this is the mechanism that holds the door open it's attached to the teeter-totter so when the teeter-totter moves the mechanism goes up and down now the door fits in these grooves will slide it down I get caught on the mechanism when the rat trips it the door slides down and when the arm goes up the mechanism holds it back open it's pretty cool that the trap sets itself and here's a side view of the teeter-totter we'll push that down just need to add the bait now the original instructions for this trap said place the liberal portion of broiled bacon in each compartment so I have some bacon right here that will draw the rats in yummy and here in the escape hatch you can see the second one-way door the rat will climb up push that open go up top and it can't get back down the only way the rat can get out is through the upper chamber and here's the tunnel that drops them in the tank there's another one-way door right here it's on a hinge comes down and dunks I'm gonna list the help of our pet rats to show you how this trap works go inside climbing up the second chamber we'll just help our rat out so it doesn't fall down come through here he's not too happy testing this trap out we'll go put him back in his cage well our antique automatic rat trap worked with our pet rat let's go set it up in the barn with motion cameras and try to catch some wild rats we're just about ready to catch rats but because they can chew their way out we have to add water in the metal container we'll pull that out and fill it up about half way that should be deep enough that way when the rats come and drop down in there they'll reset the trap and drown now we'll draw them in with the bacon I don't know if rats like bacon but we'll find out well test and see if our doors working the rat will go inside step on the teeter-totter push that down it closes then when it goes up and resets one after another we can catch rats let's set up the motion cameras and see what happens tonight [Music] well it's now the next morning and it looks like we had a busy night last night I took a peek inside in there are several rats I don't know how many but I'm gonna dump them out and count them I count four I'm gonna have to review the trail camera footage to see if there's any problems or malfunctions and you escaped out the top but overall I'm happy with the result now I don't want these rats to go to waste there's so many wild animals that love to eat rodents so I'm gonna go set these up with trail cameras and see what comes along and enjoys rat snacks [Music] I love living in the country where I have so many wild animals especially ones that like to eat rats I didn't know a raccoon grunted like a pig but apparently it does and they don't like trail cameras they knocked him over question-and-answer time the first ones pretty good is the random food question do you have any allergies well unfortunately yes I'm allergic to mangoes if I eat a mango my throat will close up my lips will swell I'll get a rash so I have to watch out for mangoes I'm also really allergic to poison oak in quite a few videos you've seen me have rashes on my face on my arms if I get it in my eyes they swell shut that's happened quite a bit I work a lot outside with my job and poison oak is everywhere it's my least favorite plant so mangoes and poison oak are my allergies next question what do you think the general age of your audience is well with the analytic tool I don't have to guess I know exactly most of my viewers are between 18 and 44 years old not a lot of older viewers or younger viewers that's actually really good for my channel that I don't have a lot of younger viewers recently YouTube had to pay a huge settlement over 170 million dollars for illegally taking data on kids under 13 and targeting ads so YouTube channels that are tailored towards kids are all going to be D monetized in the next four months luckily my age range is much older and if you wonder what gender is watching my videos seventy seven point two percent or male and twenty two point eight percent female given the subject matter of my videos that's not surprising but I noticed recently especially this year the number of females watching has gone way up what would be your go-to all-rounder pickup truck the takoma the Colorado or the f-150 well out in the driveway we have three vehicles we bought a Sequoia for a family car to replace the Honda Pilot after the accident in February that Honda Pilot did an amazing job of keeping my family safe but we wanted something a little bigger if we had one of our kids in the third row they would be dead so we got the Sequoia and we also recently bought a tundra one that fits the whole family and has a so when I go out hunting or camping I can sleep in the bed and not have to set up a tent that's a great vehicle but my all-time favorite truck one that I bought brand new back when I was in college my first vehicle was a 2004 Tacoma before they changed the body styles but when we were looking for the tundra my wife floated the idea of trading it in I just couldn't do it I love that truck next question have you ever been to Mexico well yes kind of I don't know if it really counts but I have been across the border to Tijuana I went back in high school with a church group and we built some houses but Mexico is a huge country I'd love to visit it sometime but not for a while other countries I've been to I've been to the Bahamas Canada Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands I've been to Brazil twice I've been to Israel a win saw Petra and Jordan and also Norway to visit my sister and Italy to see Otzi the Iceman also along that trip when we were hiking the glacier we went into southern Austria I love traveling but with kids we probably won't be traveling to foreign countries for a while but we are going to Maui in October that'll be fun okay that's it for question-and-answer time now quite a few viewers saw the one frame I put a photo while I announced in my last video that we are having another kid a little girl her name is going to be Ruby hazel I've been wanting another kid for a while now and now I'm gonna have two boys and two girls so I'm really excited Thanks to everyone who left comments in the last video I'm surprised how many people stopped that one-frame and saw the photo thank you so much for watching my videos if you haven't subscribed to mousetrap Mondays please
