Can you trust Discord's verified bots?

now i made a mistake in a previous video i said if a bot is verified then it should be considered safe and that's not actually true here's an example of a bot that is verified that is asking me to grow my discord server and this is of course going to be a scam but it'll say that i just need to add a bot to a server and use a command slash grow to get over a million users okay and then a limited time i need to do this now and i need to invite the pot so i'm going to invite this bot to my server i want to boost i'm gonna click continue and it wants administrator privileges which are pretty strong but i'm just gonna keep on continuing and click authorize of course i have to do a captcha and then when i add the bot to my server it's going to go through this i don't know chrome thing oh it's gonna oh oh i need to join some token site okay i'm gonna join it why not right i always like clicking on the big blue yes button but you'll notice what happens is that the bot joins my server and i got another dm saying congratulations me i've been gifted 14 discord server boosts so i'm going to click on this link now what this is going to do is this is basically going to make me add this bot to my own server so you kind of see how this is going right if i have this server that i want to boost and you know i invite people get a link and i decide to send it to my friend who's just wanting to join the server they add a server they join the server guess what happens they get a dm from the bot saying are you interested in growing your server so this bot is trying to spread itself over and over and replicate and just spread out to a whole bunch of servers now you might be thinking okay well i mean that's just pretty uh that's just a pain in the rear end to deal with but is this bot truly malicious and yes it is now how do i know that well if i go to the server here you'll notice that okay i have this bot and let's just try doing that slash grow command nothing happens okay maybe i know what i'm doing and i try mentioning the bot to see if there's any commands there's nothing uh maybe look in the slash commands is there anything this bot can do nothing this bot you added to your server does nothing and if i go to my server settings and go to my roles and look at the permissions of this role of the bot basically you'll notice it has admin what does this mean well let's say this is on a really big server and you manage to make the owner of the bot quite mad well the owner of the bot can just log into their bot and nuke your whole server because they have admin and even more if i go to my user settings and i go to my authorized apps guess what the ethex bot that does nothing can join servers for you so of course the whole point is that basically if you have this bot added to your server everyone's going to add it to their server and at some point they can use this to drag you into another server that has the athex bot on it anyways now you might be thinking all right let's look into this uh this token site website thing and to be honest it's not anything crazy it's actually just some sort of nft garbage server of course nfts have no value and putting any money into them is a stupid idea i always decline any nft sponsorship requests even if they gave me like fifty thousand dollars maybe i'd consider it but regardless there's this nft server now you might be thinking hmm the owner of the server is he the scammer not entirely i can't say for certain and that's because usually what happens is that the person running this fake bot will just get people to pay for advertisement for example this nft server this guy could just be completely normal not someone who tries to scam people i mean to be fair he's running an nft site so he probably could be scamming people but regardless basically he would just contact the owner of the bot saying hey i want a whole bunch of members to join my server i'll pay you like a hundred dollars so the owner of this bot gets a hundred dollars for advertising the nft server now that begs the question how did this bot become verified i mean there's got to be some way that you know this bot gets taken out by discord and believe it or not i mean it's not too difficult to get a bot account first off you could just buy one for like fifty dollars probably so considering a hundred dollars for advertisement and fifty dollars for the bot you're already making 50 bucks but if you want to go with a straight and narrow way and you don't want to buy the actual bot account you can just get your bot verified by following discord's fantastic tl dr if you're bots in more than 75 servers you can request verification from its page on the developer portal so that means all you need to do is make 75 servers or convince people to add the bot to 75 servers and then kaboom you can get your bot verified now to be fair there's a little bit more nuance into this you also need to submit a verification request where a discord staff member will look over it but considering you know you could say something as simple as what these athex people did which is uh moderation and purpose and discord will look at that and they'll say damn there's a lot of purpose in this bot verified done easy i swear sometimes they don't even look at what they're actually looking at what you could also do is just i don't know go on github and get an auto moderation bot and pretend it's your own bot and discord sees that and they're like oh yeah it works and then once they verify your bot you just change everything i mean nothing's really stopping you from that and the final kind of barrier to this is that you need to verify your identity and of course if you're scamming people you're not going to be giving your true identity so you just kind of make a fake one up and you go through stripe using a fake identity like literally there's really no barrier to entry into getting a verified bot and scamming people with it in this case i mean to be fair this bot in itself is in no way super duper malicious it's not going to steal your credit card it's just going to be more of an annoyance and i mean all you're really doing is just adding this bot to your server so it just keeps on advertising this nft server and at some point in the future maybe this bot owner will drag you into another server because you have that authorized app connection right there but other than that it's not doing a whole lot of damage it's just making your discord experience a little less optimal i mean discord in itself is a garbage platform so i mean it's really up to you so basically kind of the conclusion of this video is that a bot with a check mark doesn't mean you can just turn off your brain you need to be critical on what this bot does this bot specifically is verified but all it does is just spam your new members with this kind of oh free server boosts garbage i mean if i receive this from a server i just joined i'm going to assume that the server i just joined is also a scam server so if you have a bot somewhere on your server that's not doing anything just kick it i mean no harm no foul and if you did add this bot to your server or you did do anything regarding this bot or any other bot make sure to just check your authorized apps and de-authorize it and kaboom there you go you're good to go don't have to worry about that specific bot anyways sweetheart i need to finish installing my lego floor so i'll get back to that but anyways you have a fantastic night okay love
