hey everyone my name is Ray Chen and I'm an international concert violence who tours around the world playing mostly classical music so part of my job is to learn difficult music very quickly so recently one of my friends told me about this guitarist Tim Hansen from the band pfia who apparently play pretty difficult music by non-classical music standards today I'm going to listen to this piece called playing God and attempt to learn it in just 30 minutes I mean how hard could it [Music] be wait wait wait wait a second Why did no one tell me this guy is like a it's like a Paganini did he play [Music] harmonics all right I I I take back can we can we adjust the time from 30 minutes to more time no no I I can do this I can do this I bet I okay 30 minutes is we'll just see we'll see [Music] wow this is such a cool piece kind of Spanish sounded which I guess makes sense cuz it's [Music] guitar okay I think I get the idea this is going to be one of the toughest challenges I've ever done no lie this is this is no wonder it's called playing God all right so I found this transcription here and also I found a violin version of it okay cool cool cool I think it's going to be the difficulty going to be in the harmonics I think he does something [Music] different add in a few notes I think also um the difficulty is like to get the right kind of vibe Tim here is playing it super chill very relaxed so but then there's also like I would say there's pulse there as well [Music] so uh I think this is like he's playing it faster than my brain can comprehend oh good thing though YouTube has half [Music] speed oh my gosh actually playing it at half speed is even worse because because you can actually hear he's actually doing all these different harmonics to be honest I don't think some of these things are actually possible on the violin I think that that's why the Loosely based on Tim hensen's part is written in this thing about guitarists that they have six strings we only have four so got to add more [Music] chords think he does a little slide there actually it's really hard to try and get [Music] the he has this effortlessness I think of a larger beat it's like this dude is actually phrasing it's it's kind of incredible actually really really am enjoying this uh this piece this is like a Paganini piece [Music] wow he usually adds a harmonic halfway like we're going to do that too then oh yeah I don't have that string on the violin okay so we have a structure I like to just like go through make sure that all the notes are sort of the same that they work on the instrument that's probably the first section is till this measure measure 16 we are now going to go into the next section here this is the flamco section [Music] oh my gosh okay I'm really glad that there is already this this transcription here is even has fingerings in it this is Speed [Music] Learning what is [Music] that there we he does the [Music] so low practice I guess okay half speed half speed just doing a simple note check here oh okay this is not the same no one's ever going to be able to read these marking St for [Music] me oh okay okay but this this transtion goes up I quite like that actually that that's actually a pretty pretty cool kind of violinistic thing to do instead of going just one to one okay cool okay then we're back to the beginning all right all right all right so this seems we are setting ourselves a goal I guess of whenever the time's up so we'll just keep [Music] going do upow oh my gosh I can barely read my own markings my own markings are so all over the place so my trick my trick is basically to write in as many fingerings as possible when I'm learning a new piece because sometimes the notes especially when we're changing them so much you just watch the numbers there's only there's only four four fingers that Ricochet looks like a smiley face ah but my soul is my soul is dying though a few moments later I think we should just give it a go okay so as you can see I'm struggling quite a bit and I have to say also feeling very humbled but before I show you the final result I want to share with you my secret to learning things so quickly and it's something I've been working on for the past 2 years called tonic it's an app that helps you stay more engaged and motivated while you practice so you can level up your skills quicker and now you might be like hold on Ray I'm pretty sure we all know how to practice we've been doing it for years now and I'd say yeah while you might have been practicing for years or even decades chances are you're probably not getting as much out of it as you could be and the difference is simply your environment they on tonic you get to be in the midst of others who are also practicing where you can join the practice rooms and even invite them to yours it's like going to the world's biggest music school that you can access anywhere anytime there are also loads of events and challenges where you and your friends can win prizes and awards for practicing and the best part about it is it's free so download tonic today by going to the link in my description below or scanning this QR code that's on the screen all right practice time's over let's begin the performance [Music] well I got to say that this was a very fun piece to play but also very very difficult that's as good as I could get it within the time frame but I mean it's the kind of piece that makes you continuously want to practice it over and over again so definitely going to keep doing that and if you guys enjoyed watching this and want me to try out different different solos guitar solos mandolin solos violin solos any solos for that matter leave a comment below and hopefully I will also see you in the practice room on tonic and speaking practice I'm going back back into the [Music] piece
