I've done some realism challenges before and realism to me is a challenge in and of itself but I thought you know what it is you know what I need to be doing differently I should try realism with a more difficult tool and medium that I'm gonna try three realism challenges in this video first is by memory creating something entirely new that represents something that could be real but doesn't exist because it's from your head too I'm gonna copy something in real life also known as still life and third a picture to picture flat image before we get started I have a I've just lodged a brand-new Skillshare class it's called mastering illustration sketching inking and color essentials in my class you're gonna learn the basics of sketching inking and color as well as advanced techniques and approaches for all of those things going into details such as textures and lighting effects my step-by-step process of teaching when the class empowers you to take risks explore your style and trust that you'll improve over time when you put pen to paper brush to canvas or stylus to screen whatever your medium this course is gonna work for you and you're gonna love it I put so much work into it and I'm really excited that not only have I made this really exciting course with a skill share but it's a skill share original there's hours of content and you can watch the whole class for free by using the link in the description that will give you two months of free premium skill share membership and with that not only can you enjoy the entirety of my class that I've carefully constructed with skill chef you can also watch my other classes I made one on being a youtuber and another one I'm presenting to camera and of course there are over 30,000 classes on Skillshare for you to take your skills to the next level or learn something I want to give a huge thank you to skill share not only for sponsoring this video and supporting the channel but for making this class of with me their insight and help in crafting something really useful for you guys has been amazing the links in the description and once again a huge thank you to skill chef for working with me sponsoring this video and making with me too well speaking of making something awesome don't know if that's how this video is going to turn out but one of my favorite things to do is jump in the deep end and do my best and sometimes I pleasantly surprised myself a matter only happens when I jump in the deep end so let's jump okay so first a little test of all my pens to see which would work best the three cheap paper main board points were actually the most consistent another generic black pen performed similarly and then there was this random freebie pen you get from website orders where they throw something in to sweeten the deal well apparently video craft thought the best way to tell me how quality their online shop was would be to send me a pen that doesn't work sorry video craft maybe stick to you know video craft anyhow a few pens later yeah fine whatever the paper might one's work best and work together so time to see if I can get them to get real I already use that joke now for the first of the three challenges I was initially tempted to do a person of some kind I'm always drawn to drawing people but I realized that that would be the easiest to see the flaws with so I went in the opposite direction a more rustic landscape the more I think about it the more logical this direction actually was I mean the most realistic artworks I've ever made happen to have been when I was following along with the Bob Ross video so I'm pulling from that experience and on top of that the presence of wood grains grass and overall the rough textures and natural shading would in the end suit the limitations of the ballpoint pen quite well so let's just call it a happy accident I tried to focus less on shapes and outlines and on shading and on texture thinking about keeping lighting directions consistent and shading not only where the shadows are cast but also where light dissipates such as where the two you know wealth or the cabin intersect slowly closing in and blocking out light from getting into the corners otherwise I did my best to create a clear distinction between the areas of the scene background mid ground and foreground while trying not to be too cartoony or rigid in my approach remembering to have broken branches or uneven shapes and also that consistency in lighting the end of the day the ballpoint pens are an obvious limitation to creating photo realism however by using its limitation as the focus with Lyons texture and rustic aesthetic feel like I was able to sort of create something much more effective than I initially expected [Music] so this is one out of three I did better than I thought I would now look it's not like photorealistic but it's more realistic than not let me know what you think in the comments I'm pretty proud of it though especially with the focus on lighting and shade and the way that there's a clear direction of light there are clear shadow areas and there's also clear layers of depth which I think sort of helps build a scene it feels like a place I feel like I'm standing at the fence of an abandoned old like log cabin of the woods it's really quite nice I'm very proud of but we're gonna move on to the next challenge this is a USB stick that contains Diablo 1 & 2 that came in the special edition boxset of Diablo 3 when that was released and this object is easily the most exciting and least disappointing thing that came in the Diablo 3 box there I picked this because it's black tints of blue and this is red and I thought it might be a good way to try and put all three to the test this is quite dark though and so my approach is going to be to put some light on it so this is the light I'm gonna be using it's just like this little let's see if I can pull off making this realistic representation with nothing but cheap Pyro's okay this one's weird not only is it weird to do is I couldn't really move or shift my focus much but it's also super weird too well show you I mean there's no way I can show you my first-hand perspective without blocking my view of what I'm drawing and even though what I'm trying to recreate in my illustration is as accurate as I'm capable of it's both warped from the angle I'm on compared to you but also by the perspective of the paper and its distance from my eyes excuses aside this is a challenge after all and it's called a challenge for a reason because it's because it's challenging that's what was referring to so I took it on board too slowly but surely do my best to create a realistic representation of what I was looking at and I think I have a cool way to show you how it looks from my perspective when I'm done so I'm gonna get stuck into it or wish me luck [Music] [Music] okay ballpoint pen realism challenge number two I'm just going to show you through my eyes what I see and it's something about there so let me just take a minute to zoom into the original thing I was copying and then across to my illustration or my attempt at realism obviously a bit more colorful than it should be and a little brighter than it should be but if I color balance and put it side-by-side no it's good something there it's got some merit you can see what I was going for it's weird because it's actually harder I think then the first and then probably the third because it's really hard to get a clear constant reference in fact I had one eye closed through most of drawing it which is really disorienting in its own way because then you lose depth perception but at the same time if I swap my eyes or if both eyes are open the perspective essentially the lens I'm using to look at the thing I'm drawing is shifting where I'm seeing it from it's really quite difficult I don't know how people do it in real life I guess your real life studies are often like further away maybe I should've thought of that anyway moving on number three so the first part of the last challenge is all about placement and proportion I need to as accurately as possible define the placement of things and avoid a few pitfalls one of those pitfalls is to avoid the temptation to draw what you think is there basically after drawing hundreds or even thousands of faces and different ways your brain thinks it knows what a face or feature of a face looks like in reality realism is very different I mean I can't loosely draw the eye based on my reference and then fill in the rest based on what I think and I looks like rather I need to approach this exercise in a much more abstract way instead of drawing the eye I'm drawing a selection of tones and lines that happen to to us look like an eye my priority has to be with the replication of the abstract shapes and shadows rather than an instinct to create what I think and perceive those shapes to be a mime I think I hope I am but even though I was approaching her with this intention the other problem remains I'm using a friggin ballpoint so you know no amount of effort or practice will enable me to replicate the level of subtlety and detail smoothness in the original image so I'm afraid you'll have to settle for my very best efforts to do so with a more textured approach to shading then I would do with a pencil it's not photorealistic but I think it's working and if anything it's creating a sort of unique aesthetic that I may not have thought to go for otherwise and these kind of experiments and challenges can be worthwhile even for the sake of exploring something in a new way or doing something in a way you hadn't thought to do before sometimes stuffing around is a bit of fun that's another moral of this of the story [Music] and last but not least this is attempt number three and as you can see especially as I started again into the shading but pretty much have to embrace the fact that this is not gonna be a photorealistic copy I'm using a ballpoint pen guys come on but with that said I'm like way happier with the result of this than I expected to be as far as that feeling like a representation of the thing that I'm copying that's what the realism challenge is it's trying to make it feel like a one-to-one thing even if it's obviously not gonna be exact in its tone or texture or detail there are some proportion differences or whatever but as far as just copying by eye and not having any way of going back after I've put down the feeling like that's the biggest challenge aside from the fact that these don't give you good gradients or shading or anything like that there's no erasing so with that said I think this turned out pretty good I mean in fact I think this whole video turned out pretty bloody good especially considering like I said at the beginning of the video that this is not my strong suit it's not where I am confident but by branching out and trying something I'm genuinely uncomfortable with and just immersing myself in it I have ended up with three results I think are better than I expected and that's pretty cool I'm gonna say I think the first one it's gotta be my favorite it just feels like a real place I know the fact that I sort of made that up and yet if there's a tangibility to it is something I'm really proud of and I hope you guys have enjoyed coming along this journey with me taking this challenge with me but if you want to come along a journey where I am most confident I would be delighted if you came in joy to me in my skill share class where I share my illustration techniques and processes I actually create two illustrations at a simple illustration and a more complex illustration and in the complex one I challenged myself and I really do believe there's something for everyone in that class so I really hope you go check it out and you love it I'll link to it once again in the description the end of the day it's all fun whether you comfortable with it or you're pushing yourself and stretching your boundaries there is little I find as satisfying as trying something not knowing how it's going to turn out but just diving in anyway and ending up with something you think that pretty good I want to thank you so much for watching this video and joining me make sure to subscribe for more fun with art and creativity if you haven't liked this video and check out more videos over there you're bound to enjoy if you enjoyed this one otherwise that's it for now thank you for watching and until next time I'll see you later
