hi everyone welcome to pawpaws workshop this is part 1 of building a bath vanity we're going to build this base today part 2 is going to be building the drawers let's get started [Music] you to begin making this base cabinet for the bath vanity I cut three pieces for the upright on the cabinet and they were going to be 30 inches by 21 and 3/8 because the total width of the cabinet was going to be 22 inches and that allows to the 3/4 of inch for the face frame so I'm cutting this at 21 and 3/8 and it's 30 inches tall to layout for the toe kick on the cabinet's I want to be able to come up from the floor three and a half inches and then from the face frame back I want to have it a total of three inches back now the face frame is going to be three quarters of an inch so what I need to do is measure right now at two and a quarter so with those two measurements we'll go ahead and lay it out draw it in then I'll cut this out with the jigsaw the next step is to cut out three pieces for the nailer that goes on to the back of the cabinet that will be used to secure the cabinet to the wall now this can Billy be any width that you want I went ahead and cut mine at five and a half inches and I made three of these that would go across the back of the cabinet and fit in between the see uprights that I have and the next part that we have to cut is the base that supports the floor of the cabinet now this is three and a half inches wide same height as the toe kick and this will allow me to be able to nail this to the uprights and then the base of the cabinet or that floor will be able to nail directly to it now the assembly begins I'm taking those three and a half inch wide pieces that I had just cut and went ahead and nailed those to the upright again this supports the base of the cabinet for the floor and this creates the nailer this next piece is going to be the Middle's upright and on this one it gets this nailer that's three and a half inches wide nail to both sides so here I'm going to go ahead and attach it do one side and then once this is done I'll flip it over and nail the piece on to the other side and this way it will support the floor on both sides of the center section of the cabinet now with the nailer attached to both sides I'm going to go ahead and set this one out of place and then I'll do the same thing to the third one only this time I put the nailer just on the one side now with this last piece actually nailed in place I'm gonna go ahead and call these three pieces finished and now it'll be time to go ahead and start assembling the rest of the cabinet itself the next step was to cut the face frames and now to cut these out of a premium select Pines so there's no knots and they're inch and a half wide and I have one piece that 3/4 of inch wide for the bottom I went ahead and cut everything to length laid it out on my workbench so I could see exactly how it's going to look and the drawers are going to be four and a half inches wide that's the opening to hold the face frame together I'm taking this over to my Craig system where I'm going to be able to drill two holes on each end of the face frame to be able to attach them together this creates a very strong joint and it's a very simple process to be able to do this with all the holes drilled I'll lay everything where it's facedown clamp it in position and then be able to secure the face frame together with the inch and a quarter screws and I do this throughout the whole process to join the face frame together now you can see I'm starting with the top and going to work my way down I want this top edge completely in place and secured and then I'm going to move to the opening that has to be 4 and 1/2 inches wide that's going to be the opening for the drawers that block of wood that you see there is actually four and a half inches wide and I use that as a spacer that way is very accurate and I don't have to rely on a tape measure to be able to try to get it accurate this spacer does the trick every time now comes the fun part where we actually starting to assemble the cabinet what I've done is I stood up the vertical pieces and I put the base pieces in place and then nail them securely to the uprights then from there I switch around put the other upright up in place make sure that it's in position and nail that together that holds the bottom secure and it keeps it exactly where it needs to be using this process I can do it by myself without assistance now lay the cabinet back on its back take the face frame and put it into position now off-camera I did nail the nailer to the top of the cabinet to nail the face frame in place I'm using the same technique as before I have a three quarter inch spacer that I'm using to be able to align the face frame exactly where I want it and then be able to nail it in place again this eliminates the need for a tape measure and it's far far more accurate to do it this way and I'm going to start at this top left corner and then move all the way across the cabinet positioning it and nailing it exactly where it needs to be this spacing of a three-quarter inch is critical for where the drawers are the reason being I do have another piece that's going to go in to support the drawer slides which must be exactly flush to the face frame so this alignment is critical for the operation of the drawers to be smooth now I'm doing the same thing for the other side for the drawer where that has to be exactly three quarters of an inch [Music] [Music] now that that's all completed I'm gonna move to these three quarter inch pieces where I'm going to glue and nail these pieces in place at the bottom of the cabinet that completes the face frame and it also covers up in hives the plywood edge that would be exposed if I did not have this 3/4 of an inch piece of wood in place once these three pieces are glued in place that will complete the actual base cabinet in the next video I'm going to show how to make their drawers now you might be wondering why did three uprights where I have this great big large opening and the reason being if there are some pipes that actually come through the wall on this right side where it needs to be open and that's the reason I couldn't put in a fourth upright piece I am supporting the face frame with the same type of backer board that I used for the nailer on the back of the cabinet to provide the necessary support for the face frame hi everyone thank you for watching my video today if you liked the video please go ahead and hit the subscribe button down below
