problem for a regular car tyler's car of the future was looking more and more like a liability road trip time it's chillier than i remember it's gonna get worse they're tyler's here jeez [Applause] oh your challenge is to drive your family sedans to pikes peak and you should do so without requiring our legal services we can get you out of a ticket no matter where you get it but we want to remind you that it is a class 2 misdemeanor if you get caught for 25 over or more in the state of colorado why was that necessary it's punishable by three to 12 months in county jail and a fine of 250 to 1 000 well i mean do they know what i'm driving this is not in any sort of danger well i can't really do that kind of speed and make it because there's a battery fast well they're fast but then you lose range so i have a full charge of 230 miles i have an electric car i can't make it all range anxiety you have no i mean not really i can just use the supercharger network let me put it in right now actually let's see follow-up text hold on along your way we would like you to devise a clever commercial to advertise each of your cars to your audience a commercial like yeah but tesla doesn't do commercials no mercedes has some very iconic ones the santa ones yes you're not going to be sansa i could i could get a costume i could paint the thing red no we did santa and it wasn't good well elon doesn't need to advertise oh really no these sell themselves with their capabilities so now their customers sell them for them it's uh one two three four five five supercharger stops what how long does a supercharger stop take uh 30 minutes 40 minutes 15 minutes 45 minutes and 30 minutes 45 minutes tyler i i'm gonna die before we get there yeah so so your first one is to get to celina kansas with 37 of your range remaining correct 30 minutes then hayes kansas 45 minutes then colby 15 minutes then goodland 40 minutes in 30 minutes so that adds oh you know three hours of charging on our journey all right so uh let's how is this supposed to be an efficient way to travel it doesn't matter let's say all right let's go and follow the internal combustion yeah we we may have some modifications of this trip [Music] as we headed out towards the most famous mountain road in america we took a minute to appreciate the picturesque surroundings of kansas or black thereof so ed how was your wichita experience it's real flat real windy uh but overall very pleasant lots of corn i love how easy it is to get everywhere there's not many people here it seems we are in rush hour traffic right now well it's sunday but yes you can get anywhere in town in 15 minutes the roads are well maintained it's just a nice place i have to say in the wake of both of you massively cheating tyler on this sedan and freddie with your chidi supra i abiding by the rules as i always do have really enjoyed myself so far this trip i'm very much looking forward to getting to pike's peak i've never been there the car actually has i cannot believe people suffered through the boredom of operating that car for a million miles you do realize you're driving a mid-2000s s-class right there's no place i'd rather be all right up here we're going to hop on k96 west uh no we're going to go on 35 north to the salinas of the first supercharger no this is better so you're wanting to take the southern route exactly that's where all the pretty driving is we don't need to be on 70. but 70 is where the supercharger network is well they have those generic superchargers right like you know the the off-brand electricity this will be picturesque tyler well if you want me to make it to pike's peak right you do want me to make it i do not want him to make it of course i want you to make it we're a team we're not a team and how much range do you have they have 209 miles of range tyler you need to lift a little ed slow down please because i need lower speed to get maximum range they build these cars and brag about how fast they are but you're not actually able to drive it fast let's not do the top gear thing where they fake the whole tesla problem thing let's just show that it's possible it is not possible yeah these really aren't meant to be cross-country vehicles but they can do it famous last words with tyler's range anxiety clearly setting in ed and i decided that a scenic route should include some sightseeing so we made a pit stop at a local fossil auction where we bought tyler some very shiny old rocks [Music] this stop did cost us some time though which meant we'd have to make it up on the road a tall order for the tesla's limited range but ed had an idea to get tyler going a bit quicker so tyler how fast does that thing actually like top out at i have no idea i don't you don't do that in the tesla pull up next to me and as it turned out ed was extremely persuasive all right three two one go oh what a jump goodbye oh good inspiration that is american greatness right there oh but the v8 keeps going keeps going i'm not gonna keep going that little romp there cost me about three miles i was discovering quickly that my tesla's battery could certainly tell the difference between a marathon and a sprint having crazy acceleration on demand and even driving slightly over the speed limit was killing my range so i told the guys to pull over in the next town where i found a non-tesla branded charger i was hopeful that it wouldn't take too long which one is the future port uh it's there i've never done one of these before it's saying i need to download another app oh well that worked well with the garage door oh all right let's see if this off brand think no it's not in there are you sure how much does electricity cost i i think like 13 cents per kilowatt hour and this is an 85 kilowatts it's a bluetooth not not uh it should pop out when i hit the button just oh tesla open open tesla oh is it on the key well this is that generic kind of universal plug there the tesla's is fancy so i need my home charger to plug into this plug-in you need to bring a charger for your electric car well i thought we were taking the supercharger routes where i don't have to you took the scenic route why would we take a super charger we don't have electric cars that's ridiculous we went the pretty way yeah aren't you glad we saw all those awesome sound plausible sir if you give me a parking lot in like 10 minutes i can do that and then some well you want to find a place up here and pull off and you can go ahead and shoot your commercial i up a lot for those new technologies unfortunately those technologies have done since the days of tyler's model s so i don't know where that puts him i mean he's in some weird like purgatory limbo where he doesn't have very good range but then again he also doesn't have parts availability and his car doesn't look as good and it it depreciated like crazy so i i don't know it he has the worst of all worlds it's like the laser disc of cars if my car was a laserdisc theirs would have been cave paintings although i didn't get any charge from my stop i had figured out a route that would get me to a tesla community charger that has the right plug with barely enough range left it was going to be close [Music] oh here's ed trying to cause an accident hey tyler i got an idea maybe you should try some drafting to increase your range so a nascar draft huh tyler get behind me and draft me i'm drafting ed who's drafting you and it's creating a nice tunnel according to the tesla graph it's working we were fully shaking and baking and saving what little range tyler had left until the unthinkable happened i have no forward motion here [Music] it says unable to drive battery charge level too low at 35 miles so what was it doing it was driving normally and then at 35 miles it just said the battery charge is too low but we have some charge still to go can you tweet that elon he is the customer supporter does it go forward well it says unable to drive i'm going to attempt the factory reset here what's my tesla password tyler you were so wise in buying a high technology car for this adventure so what do we learned the supremacy of internal combustion yes the brilliance of aged imported sedans my car made it one million miles uh and it's fine yours absolutely fine yeah i got the password on the fourth try here we go oh okay all right on the fourth try control all delete come on come on come on come on come on what's the level of current nervousness tyler the car just shut up like this it's not coming back on it's not coming back on no it's all off the screens though it's like dead it's dead dead there's no on screen from this car this is 100 real like tyler's car really did just run out of range in the middle of like a cornfield here in kansas this is this is fantastic i was in the middle of nowhere for the second time that day but i wasn't worried because i had a friend who would never let me down tesselbot come come to elon come hard and fast [Music] this has to be the most popular most famous ls100 in the world that's not a competitive environment okay so i think we have like the book ends of luxury reliability obviously not tyler is the lower end my car is terrific they weren't known for their reliability i mean it is the worst s-class in terms of reliability no no what's worse it's not excessively over engineered it's not you know a billion dollar development abc suspension well we know why it breaks because they didn't design it properly but when it's broken it keeps going that's not true at all absolutely look yes the suspension's broken but it hasn't been removed it hasn't kind of properly broken when a catastrophically breaks then you're in a pile of hydraulic fluid and you're all the way down the ground you have no suspension travel you can't go anywhere i go right up pike's peak like that you can't but what i can do in this is drive it i mean this can go another million miles how would you even know you can't even register the other million miles i mean it's probably at another like five hundred by now all right what's wrong come on jiggle the steering wheel stop stop stop bro what is it it so it won't it doesn't start i see that part i could diagnose that problem so i'm turning the key and nothing's happening usually what that means is there's some contact on the starter that's not making electrical an electrical arc it's not doing this um the only issue with this car is that the starter is uh underneath the intake manifold how do you get that off yeah i take off the intake manifold it's a bunch of bolts and like a lot of stuff can break you probably should just take it to scrap yard i think that's what it needs so how long does that take to fix give me like a few minutes and i'll see okay do that realistically it's probably going to be like an hour oh i certainly don't have that well good luck wrench every afternoon i will see you at pikes peak like you can't like just leave can you can you at least help me push like it really is a heavy car you ready [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] let's get started so first thing you got to take off all the plastic panels put this down somewhere there you go now you see the actual engine in here but the starter is actually underneath this intake manifold and i don't have a new starter so it makes no sense for me to take off this intake manifold just to inspect it so what i'm doing is something that uh well a lot of old school hot rod guys do and that is just hit the starter with something because sometimes they get stuck and when you need to unstuck them you just hit them with something and hopefully they start working so i have jared in the car he's going to bump the starter and if this starter bumps and i hear the engine turn over i know that we actually did something and i don't have to rebuild a starter in the parking lot a windy windy parking lot so let's let's try this [Applause] okay all right here one more try all right all right okay okay all right everybody everybody everybody calm down calm down calm down uh i will put everything back together now and hopefully this thing makes it to pike's peak hopefully meanwhile several miles ahead i was actually making great time without tyler's range issues and freddie's general lack of speed slowing me down the sun set as i cannonballed into colorado and i prepared to recreate one of the most iconic car commercials ever [Music] i've been driving amg cars since before i asked them to pay me to do it and they told me no my friends and my family they say ed you're gonna go broke with the maintenance costs but i love the cars so we compromise we meet right smack dab in the middle at me buying more heavily depreciated amg cars sometimes you gotta look back but then you realize that you broke your side view mirror yesterday so you have to look back but in a different direction and if i was a betting man and i am i bet this is going to earn me another punch on my ticket clinic frequent shopper card see what this man wants early the next morning with the whereabouts of my colleagues still unknown i headed to our destination in hopes that at least one of them would be there spoiler alert they weren't [Music] the base of pikes peak and thankfully i did not need the ticket clinic's assistance for that pull over last night they do give you the ability to fight a ticket no matter where in the country you get it their network of lawyers can fight to help you to avoid costly insurance premium increases points on your license risks of suspension and everything else that goes with having a bad ticket but not another one for my punch card in this circumstance but the s55 is obviously the perfect road trip car and will be perfect summiting pike's peak today much better i think than alexis and certainly much better than the electric car now where are they tesla bought to colorado springs ah this is the future it's so so nice now teslabot was nice enough to give me my charger adapter and my home charger cord to where i could have had my tesla make it all the way to colorado except it would have taken forever with superchargers you can stop it in 40 minutes you have a full charge but everywhere else it's like 20 30 miles an hour so i've been sitting for eight hours to drive about eight hours which is way too slow so i've decided this is the better solution me inside my 2016 chevy express explorer conversion van which is the total lap of luxury 6 liter v8 9 passengers limo lighting a big screen where i can watch dumb and dumber and it tows a tesla totally effortlessly and it is so nice last i left tyler he was not moving last i left the lexus it was not doing that it is moving and it is also smoking very badly wow smoking a bit what's up look at you giddy like somebody anticipating making it to a destination this thing made it no problem at all so it just needed like a little bit of love on the starter just a little bit of a you know just that that's all it needed ah that makes all the sense in the world yeah always always right now exactly this is a factory approved tesla accessory yeah that's also overloaded a bit i mean that tesla weighs hi tyler 1000 how are you i am excellent this makes much more sense now yeah yeah behold a 2016 chevrolet explorer conversion van nine passenger giant television screen i've watched dumb and dumber in the naked gun had a wonderful time wait so you paid ten thousand dollars for a trans am two thousand dollars for a tesla five thousand dollars for its battery how much is the van in the trailer every bit of fifty thousand dollars all right so the perfect thirty thousand dollar three car dream garage representing america getting you all the way to america's mountain pikes peak the tesla is alive again it is all charged up but a cross-country vehicle it is not for a short trip or around town as a commuter that is an excellent car but the newer ones way better way more range so we did 600 miles in our cars how many did the tesla do under its own power uh 150 yeah it broke at 120. yeah well let's meet in the middle and say 135 yeah not where the middle is 120 miles so but it started by telling you that you had what like 230 miles to go right right 730 as inaccurate as my gallardo's fuel gate it died saying i had 30 miles of range remaining for whatever reason but it had stopped okay so will it like drive now it is fully charged pikes peak isn't that long a tesla plaid set a record on this thing it it's ready okay so you basically have a plan let's go up and do this thing yeah the yolk is going to be in its element the yolk is there yes all right let's do it if you wouldn't mind grabbing a strap or two please yeah i think you've got that see at the top yeah teslabot can help could you help me unload the trailer please hear her oh i think we've got a new human skin on it it's improving continuously all right i am full throttle let's see what happens all right we are going 20 miles an hour oh 25 oh that's some elevation that's steep wow that is a view mike speak he'll climb engaged so where we started and where we're ending is about a 7 000 foot elevation change so uh our cars are going to feel it a little bit it's actually struggling right now it probably does not make 200 horsepower you know what's not affected by altitude at all electricity i've got the power one of mitch hedberg's best bits is that he talks about an escalator and that when an escalator breaks the worst thing it can ever do is become stairs it's still a tool a convenience something amazing to have to get you to other levels and the s-class is kind of like that yes it's broken but even broken it still does even more than either of those cars could and that's why i love them so very much how many miles have we got since pike's peak i have no idea my odometer is stuck i would i would estimate five miles that's interesting because i've gone down 20 miles are you gonna make it to the top tyler might run out of juice [Music] yeah that's just what we need up here pit maneuver that's not me you got to feel a little tesla there i know that that was not ed pushing everybody that fast i don't have my foot on the accelerator um and it's quite nice it does hinder my acceleration to carry you around [Music] ed was the center of that human centipede i mean i got my nose cone off i'm running them up [Music] stop [Music] how many miles does that go 15. oh all right let's let's stop that because that was pretty hard no fun at all if your airbags went off i i would just dive laughter there we go power through power through power through you can do heights but i might be today don't look over there that's the death zone i think i see the peak it's right up there this is my first time on pikes peak and so far i have to say there's a lot of people in my way it's beautiful the vistas are gorgeous but we are going 10 miles an hour look at this crap what in the world i think this is the line to get to the summit of pike's peak and we're still a mile plus out i mean do you get to sit in santa's lap when you get there what in the world is this jeez i'm boxed in [Music] it's great i'm really going to push my way out or break your car head that's one of the other there's no winning on that if you put it in park i'm just gonna break your car i've probably still got a transmission don't do it don't do it don't do it okay okay i don't want to wait in this line how about you whoo what is this it's cold it's like 30 degrees yeah about 13 000 feet and we're in a traffic jam how you feeling you breathing good freddy i'm good yeah i'm good how's your how's your hold on i'm getting a text ah it is from the ticket clinic okay you are one mile from the summit of pikes peak but one and a half hours by car oh that's a traffic jam no we don't expect you want to experience that so your next stop is garden of the gods one of the most beautiful places in colorado oh yeah you want to go back down the hill yes i do because i've actually been to the garden of the gods not to say that this isn't beautiful this is super super nice but that is just like down that's all right let's have a narrow sandwich thing going on breathe deep right here breathe deep this is our final challenge of our 30 000 dream garage welcome to bear country i guess it's an old gold mine that's a little steep dude this thing is going to tip over i'm not going to lay this thing on its side did i really pop a tire uh yep hey look there we go oh nice right through there's a tree in my car ah man we are getting way out here tyler are you okay i would really like
