what's going on guys Balkan arced it here and in today's tutorial I'm going to be talking about building renovation in Revit and everything that Revit has an offer in order to make building renovation a bit easier for you as an architect and for of course planning everything out so for building renovation you really have to divide building components and to stop that existing stuff that needs to be demolished or destroyed or taken away eliminated and then all of the new stuff new construction and new elements that you have to be added to the building luckily rabbit has a phasing option so this is a whole new menu that allows you to add in that phase or time component as a parameter to each building element so each wall can be an existing wall it can be a wall that's decided to be demolished or it can be a new construction wall now I'm going to be taking a simple project and then taking you through all the steps to how to set everything up how to demolish some of the parts of the building and then how to add to that same building and I'm going to be showing you at the end how to create these cool views and little explanations for your client presentation of what's existing what needs to be demolished and then what added later on and what the whole and project will look like so I think it's really exciting and I think it's a very helpful video now if you want to follow along and use the project files check out my patreon first link in the description you can download the project file and there you can find all of my advanced bulk an architect courses I've got over 40 hours of content on numerous advanced Revit topics ok so without any further ado let's get into the tutorial this is the building that we're going to be using for this particular tutorial now here we have a simple single-family house it's a one-bedroom house and if I just go here to the project browser and open up a level one you're going to notice that we have a simple one-bedroom here we have bath here we have a small closet and then here we have an area that's divided into a living room kitchen and then here we have a little dining area now if you want to get this file it's available on my patreon so that same first link in the description now to understand how to do building renovation we need to understand a building phasing as I said so for building phasing you have to understand how this works and to explain this we have to take a look at a few different places so the first place we want to check out is here on the manage tab here we have the phasing tab in the defacing panel and here we have the phasing dialog so if I just click here it opens up the phasing dialog and now here it says project phases and here we have the their name and their description now currently just because this is this was started as a regular file in a in the architectural template in Revit it only has two phases and usually whenever you're started a file Revit is just by default going to assign two phases an existing phase and then a new construction phase now usually by default everything is going to be set to new construction so anything you build within your model is going to be here a setup to a new construction now you can add phases the phases you can just click anywhere here and then just go ahead and add or insert a face so you can go maybe here after and there we go we have a new face now currently it says phase 1 by default but of course you can you can play around with that now I'm just going to select this one and I get rid of it just because we're not going to be using more than one phase for this particular tutorial but anyways so here we have these two phases and are here you can insert them you can play around with them but for now I'm just going to click here ok and exit out of that menu now how do you know which phase are you in so each of these views in Revit has a phase that has been assigned to it now you can track that out by not selecting anything in view so just make sure that and nothing is selected you can just hit escape a couple of times to make sure and then here in the view properties you can scroll all the way down and here we have phasing and currently here for phase it says a new construction so currently anything we model in this in this view is going to be under phase new construction now we can't change that we can just open up the drop menu and here we can change that to existing and then anything we model is going to be existing now currently as you can see nothing here is existing all of this is modelled as new construction so that's why it looks like this and here we have the phase filter and the phase filter basically either shows everything that we have so all phases or it can maybe show some only the complete model and more but first let's make some changes to this model and then we're going to be exploring the phase filter so here let's start playing around with this house and let's say we want to add a second floor on top so we make it a two bedroom a two bedroom house with an office here and the in the first level so to do something like that and the first thing that I would like to explore for this particular house is when was it modeled so a little bit of a hint here here when we say phase if we turn this to existing and hit apply this house disappears so we can assume that the house was modeled in new construction now this isn't new construction this is the existing building and we want to add a new construction to that so first we need to change the phase of all of these elements so when you select any of these elements you can see here we have also phasing in the properties and then it says phase created and phase demolished now this this here floor or this is a foundation this wasn't a demolished and it isn't going to get demolished so that's why here for demolition and says none and for phase created it says new construction now we need to change that to existing just because this is some of the some of the while all of this is existing geometry so I'm just going to change that to existing and you're going to notice that it goes kind of into half town so you can see this line is a bit grey compared to the rest of the line work this is just because this view is currently showing us a new construction so everything modeled previously is going to be kind of half down so we have to do that for the rest of this building so let's just select all elements and then go here into phasing and for the phase created let's just change that back to existing ok let's now go here into a level one and the same thing goes over here so the level one is also set to new construction and as you can see everything is now kind of just a little bit gray ok let's go back into 3d and let's start well let's start renovating or remodeling this house so the first thing that we need to do in order to add another story to this building is to get rid of the roof so to get rid of the roof we get to use one of my favorite commands and rabbit and that is the demolish command so here on the modify tab we have the demolish tool and now you can assign a shortcut to it but I don't recommend it just because I love clicking on that little hammer but anyways so here you can just come to any element any model element and you can just click on it and there we go it has been demolished now when you demolish an element it kind of gets this dashed aligned representation so when you select that element now here it says phase creating created existing and phase demolished new construction so when we get to the second phase to the new construction phase this roof is no longer there so we've demolished it now we have to do that for the rest of the elements here now there is just one tricky bit about the the rest of the elements and that's over here so let me go into a level one and let's do a simple section here so I'm just going to go with a simple section now let's do a section that goes kind of like this maybe let's go through the whole house and I'm just going to split the this segment here and just go like this so I want to include this here wall as well now if I open up this section you're going to notice that here at this building it has a this wall that attaches to the roof now once I add a floor over here this this segment over here that goes beyond level 2 is going to well it's not going to be necessary so let's see what that would look like I'm just going to navigate here to level 2 now once here I'm just going to go to the architecture tab and do a simple floor let's go with thick walls and then let's just pick the exterior walls there we go and if I just hit finish okay it is it's asking me to attach the walls to the bottom I'm just going to click no and okay yeah I'm happy with that and let's just now open up this and here we go this is that floor and as you can see that this wall goes beyond that floor now usually you're going to kind of demolish the whole floor up to this level and then start building a new wall so for that just to get rid of that little overlap what we need to do is we need to split this wall into a part that's going to be demolished and a part that's going to be left alone so the bottom we want to leave alone and this top part we want to demolish so in that case we have to go here to the modify tab we have to go with the split element tool now for some reason you can't split it here it gives you a little warning but you can split a bit below and then you can just grab this and just bring it all the way up now once we have done this we can go here to our demolish tool make sure that this section is in phasing your construction and in new construction phase we have to demolish that wall now it doesn't look the mauler just because of the scale if I turn the scale to something smaller like 1 250 or 1 220 you're going to notice that this is now a dashed line let's go back to 1 to 100 so we have to do this for the well for the whole building and then if I go here into 3d this is what that would look like so we have this additional segment of the wall that gets demolished and at the the bottom of the wall just doesn't get demolished here for the phase demolished it says none so that's just a little trick now I'm just going to repeat that same process for the rest of the walls here on this building now this is what we have what we're left with and now at this point we have to start taking a look at the changes to the house so first maybe we can add the new walls on top and that's quite simple so I'm just going to navigate here to D a level two floor plan and once here I'm just going to go here to Architecture and then to wall and I'm just going to do the same exterior wall as we had here and the height I'm going to set up to level three and then I'm just going to go here to this point here I'm going to do one segment like that go up to here and then connect this to that and then I'm just going to go to modify and then to trim and extend just to attach this to this and if I just go into 3d this is what we have so we have this new construction on top and we have just these walls and here if we scroll down to phasing it says a new construction so these have been created in new construction ok so on top of this we want to add a another roof of course now for that what we can do and this is really cool we can select this existing roof that we have already demolished we can go to copy go to paste and then just open up the drop menu and then go to align to selected levels and then align that to level three and then hit OK now here we have a wall now just because we have pasted it here the face created is new construction so it has just gone gone from the militia to new construction and then I can go into edit footprint and then just do simple trim and extend here and then just get rid of these two lines hit escape and then hit finish there we go looks nice now we can just grab all these top walls and go attach to top base and then select this roof and there we go so now we have the roof of this building now it's time to add the connection between the allure of the ground floor and the first floor and those are the stairs now to add the stairs let's go here into level 1 and here the stairs I want them to be somewhere here where this bed was located now we want to get rid of that bed so I'm just going to the oh there we go that that felt good anyways so now once I have done that now we can just add the stairs and then with these stairs in place we can see how can we start playing around with the rest of these walls so to do the stairs let's just go back to architecture and again just make sure that here the place says in your construction and then let's go to stair and for the stair I'm just going to do the irregular assembled stair with the 1 meter run and let's see how many risers let's try 16 okay let's do that 18th I just like to have an even number of risers ok so I'm just going to click here do let's see let's do 9 and then here you want to do another 9 there we go looks perfect maybe select this run and bring it a little bit closer and there we go now I'm just going to select the whole thing go with the move tool and then I just move it in place here in this corner there we go it looks perfect now you can just get to finish and there we go ok once we have this now I know I want to enclose it here with another wall so to do so I'm just going to go here with a wall and let's do a 200 millimeter wall and let's go up to level 2 there we go and let's just do it here now here you're going to notice the difference between the existing walls and new construction walls and then I'm just going to use the align tool so al is the shortcut to just align this wall to the stair okay once I haven't done this now this changes the project just a little bit so for example this window here I don't really need it anymore it would be behind the stair and it's a really awkward position maybe if we go into 3d yeah that's that's not a good position for for this window so what I'm going to do in that case is just just get rid of it so let's go back into level 1 and then I'm going to go to modify go to demolish and let's just get rid of it now as you can see it kind of goes glows darker a bit darker and it has that dashed line if we go to one to fifty there we go so as you can see that dashed line okay so next we want to make this bathroom of a bit smaller and well a bit different so I'm actually going to demolish the whole thing so just get rid of this get rid of this get rid of that there we go and this wall doesn't really mix and make any any sense anymore so I'm just going to get rid of that as well and if you have noticed when you get rid of the wall the door that's positioned on that wall just disappears itself - and next I want to do a new wall here so let's just go a and copy this one so let's just copy it here and here I want to then just keep this portion of this wall so this portion over here this I want to get rid of so for that I'm just going to use the split element tool and split that wall perhaps here attach this here attach that there and now just grab this segment and just demolish it there we go maybe go to here okay there we go okay once we have done that now we can see what else can we play around with okay I have to add a new toilet so I'm just going to add a new toilet over here looks perfect then I have to add a new door so I'm just going to select this door type in cs4 create similar and add the door here now as you can see when i add the door the door is regular black but here the opening is a dashed line that's just representing that that portion of the wall has to get demolished in order to have that door placed there and i want to add another door here just for a simple closet here for the living room now this room now has two doors which doesn't really make that much sense so i'm just going to get rid of one of these doors so maybe get rid of this one there we go so we have just one door here and then there you go now at some point this is going to get really confusing especially if you have a complex project now for that we have this facing the phase filter which can come in really useful so we can just switch this to show complete and this gets rid of those demolished elements and shows you what the what your floor plan would look like if it were completed now here we can see another problem which is this wall over here so we can go back to show all and then we can use the split element tool to split this wall here and then let's just demolish this segment there we go and now if we go to show complete okay here we have to play around with this connection a little bit there we go let's go back and to show all there we go maybe move this like that okay so you get the point so we have this we have this kind of confusing model but when you go to show complete it kind of shows you at how everything would look like and now we have to just make some changes on the upper floor so for example here if I go into level 2 we have to make an opening for this stair so let's just select the floor here go into edit boundary and then let's just change the boundary here maybe like this just like that and then I'm just going to use trim and extend like this and get rid of this line there we go looks perfect hit finish and I'm just going to get to know for now so there we go you can see what that a bottom floor would look like also here let's add maybe some railing for the exterior and if at any point this gets kind of confusing especially for the first floor just because there's so many elements showing let's clean this up a bit so first thing I'm just going to go here to face filter and change it from show all to show complete and then also I'm going to get rid of that unnecessary underlay so let's just change the range to none there we go looks much better and easier to work with and here I'm just going to add a simple railing and let's just go and follow this line yet finish there we go now if we go into 3d that's what this would look like now we can just play around and maybe add some some walls here and level two or something like that and with a little bit of playing around this is what we get so here on the top floor we have the stair here we have a wall maybe attach that in here there we go okay and then we have just a couple of rooms a bathroom here this one room has a closet and then here we have the interest the exit the door to D a little terrace here I should probably put some railing here I managed to forget that so let's just do one simple line there we go okay so when you pretty much done with the second phase here on top now we can go back into 3d and this is what we have this is our building looks really cool so there we go here we've demolished this window this one is left this is a new window and this for example here we have a demolish the wall so everything looks really cool I really like the look of it now this is the port this is the part where we can play around with the phase filter to make different representations of what we have here and this is really great for client presentations just because you can show off exactly what you have done to your client so for example here in 3d if I scroll all the way down to the view properties here we have phasing filter and currently it says show all now we can change it to show complete so this is what the complete building would look like so this is at the end the final construction then we can show maybe show just the new parts so here you can now orbit around and these are all of the new elements that are going to be inserted into this building for example here that that window was demolished so we have to add in a new part of a wall same thing here just instead of the door we have to kind of fill that in and it's really cool the dravot actually include that until that em now let's go back here to view properties this is not showing you that you can play around maybe should show previous plus demolished so these are all the previous elements plus the demolished elements so for example these parts of the wall on top get demolished so it shows that up it shows the demolished roof all of these upper wall parts that you have to get demolished and then here on the inside it shows those those just the doors things like that the bathroom and all of the elements inside the shower the bed here everything like that and then we can just go on here we can whoops yeah you have to deselect the element of course so you can just play around with these so here we have this show previous plus a new so that's that's this option and then we have showed the previous phase so this is everything after the demolish man so after the demolish everything you should be left with something that looks like this and then you start reading all the new elements and here again this is a show complete and we have these show all which includes both the previous the demolished and everything new so it's really useful to go like this through all of the elements and of course you can do the same thing here on level one where you can just see everything or you can show just show complete so this is what this would look like completed then I can show it how all of the new elements so these are all of the new elements that will be shown here then we have the option to show demolished blasting you so here that's what this would look like or maybe show previous plus demolished and it's this is really cool just because it gonna highlights what gets demolished in this particular floor plan here these wall segments get demolished just because we're opening up a doors through those this window here this wall gets demolished here a little bit just because of that window so you can basically play around and then we have show complete and this is what we get I'm just going to go back to show well and the same thing goes here for a level two so we can go to show all or show complete and then we can go to show previous plus demolished so that will look like this so now we have that demolished a roof plus the previous elements and I'm just going to go to show all or perhaps show complete is the best option for this second level so there we go that's how you can play around with these filters and that's how you show off your building okay so that's pretty much it for this tutorial I know it has been a bit along and thank you for sticking through if you want these project files so you can follow along check out my patreon first link in the description if you sign up there you will get access to all of my advanced courses I've got over 40 hours of content up there so far and I'm adding a new hour each week plus a lot more project files okay so that's pretty much it and I'll see you with another regular balkan architect tutorial in a couple of days thank you for watching and have a nice day
