A guy is adding to his shop. I really feel good for him. To go from what he started with to being able to add on to this shop for future projects is quite an achievement. You can definitely hear the honesty in his voice that he appreciates us.

I'm SO jealous of his shop.

One of the things I picked up on over the past couple shows is that he needs an inventory management system. He's got so many long term projects going on he can't keep track of what he has and doesn't

hey welcome back to vice grip lodge i've got some really exciting news to share with you fellers today some of you might hear some heavy equipment outside running and that's because we're adding on to vice grip garage here that's right we're going to be doubling the size of this pole barn and i'm going to be bringing you guys along for the ride [Music] real quick before we jump in i just want to say thank you to sunday for sponsoring today's video so let's talk about this whole thing really quick because you guys know if you watch vice grip garage i am packed in here like a mall barrel cart i ain't got no room i mean i am out yes i am not the most organized as you can see from stuff everywhere but it's hard for a guy to organize when you pick something up there's nowhere to put it back down and what i find myself doing is rolling carts around and just picking up boxes and moving them here and doing this and that and i just it's a huge loss of production and a waste of time and ultimately it's slowing me down on producing content now one of the reasons i'm out of room is we try to balance the content over on vice grip garage so in a lot of cases we have mountains of parts laying around for projects that are coming up and we do that a little bit differently you know it might be a misconception that i can just go run a magic card and boom all these parts show up and it's easy peasy and we go to a build i'm i'm a regular guy like the crew cap that took me three years of collecting parts to be able to do that build gmc back here same thing snowbird we're still bringing in parts i'm missing a lot of stuff and i want to have those parts here so we could do these nice you know builds in succession and and so forth but what that ends up doing is it takes up a lot of room around the shop as you guys can see so we finally made the decision to just go ahead reinvest in the company and let's add on and we're going to put a 40 by 60 edition on which is what this is the exact same size so we're doubling our size out that end over there so when it's done it's going to be 40 by 120 and we'll have one wall down and i'll explain that in a little bit when we go outside now another thing is some people think well this is a brand new barn i just built this when i moved and that's not the case this pole barn was built very cheaply and wrongly uh 14 years ago concrete's cracking it's heaving i've got posts settling in these aren't even green treated posts they're just two by sixes stocked together i mean it wasn't someone built it themselves basically what we're going to do is we're going to basically mirror image this building we're going to duplicate it on the other end so we're going to still do 10 foot on center beams and we're going to do the same metal trusses they're super cheap their metal trusses up here and they just have two by fours laid on them there's no snow load or anything like that down here reason for that is the biggest reason is construction material right now as you guys know is absolutely insane i've never seen it like this so it's going to save us a tremendous amount of money versus doing a metal building a precast or even a framed building this is too much lumber the only changes we're going to be making is four by four uh treated posts these are actually rotting right now that's that's fine and then the second thing when we're done hopefully is when you walk in the door it's gonna look pretty close to all the same all the way down obviously on the exterior the tin color is going to be different so forth but we're not doing anything luxurious or fancy or adding bathrooms or lofts or offices this is a shop we're here to work we're here to work on cars and like everything we try to do we're trying to keep the budget down as much as possible now my wife jessica and i you know while we involve the kids with everything so you know it was a board meeting we discussed you know do we even want to share this and we kind of went back and forth for a while and the reason is is i just don't want anybody to misconstrue why we're sharing this because it seems like the common thing to do on the interwebs these days is gloat and brag and look at this new this and shiny that look what i bought and all of this stuff i'm not that guy and i'll never be that guy i mean ever and neither will my family but the more we thought about it end of day we wouldn't be doing or have the ability to do this construction project if it wasn't for you subscribers watching right now and that's the god's honest truth we would not be able to do it if it wasn't for you so from the bottom of our hearts thank you sincerely for the support and the kindness over the last few years and allowing us to do this and because of that we've got to share it with you right this is your construction project just as it is ours and again we wouldn't be able to do it if it wasn't for you so let's go outside i'll kind of show you what's going on there is a lot of things in progress this has been months in the making and planning and zoning and permits and budgeting and save money here and save money there and selling vehicles and this and that to pull this off so it's going to be busy for the next couple months but i hope to share this with you from the beginning all the way to the end where we get the paint on the floor and we can say hey here's the new vice grip garage headquarters let's jump outside and see what we got going on i guess really quick before we head out i'll just kind of show you what i'm talking about more clearly is this wall here is going to go away and this the extension is going to go out this window basically if i can get out here you can see i'm digging into the hill out there and then these posts they're just two by six and they're ten foot on center and now we just got some two by sixes going around for the ten it's actually a really cheap build and then those are those metal trusses basic metal trusses up there but same size basically 40 by 60 going out that way we'll still just have the door down here and i think i'll have one more mandor on the new edition out the side down there and we'll put three overheads cheap non-insulated just like these uh i think they're gonna be 12 foot doors we'll have three of them on the new edition because we're not going to have you know this whole space here and then that much space in between so it'll just be kind of bays the goal our hope is i guess is to be able to move all of this stuff over there and then we'll have an area to work on vehicles there and then we'll have a straight in with the lift over here for projects and we can actually move and work around projects in here we've got a project waiting on parts this is all parts for a project here we've got all this is parts for that project this is all parts we've been collecting for the crew cab which should be done soon but you can see how it just takes up so much space quickly [Music] here's where a tree was i had out here we took that out in advance again saved some money and cutting all these trees out of here saved us quite a bit [Music] over here it's going to be a little bit tricky this is also my property over here but this is a property line for this section and this section i could technically just build right across but if i ever wanted to sell this which i don't i'm not going to i guess but right now per the courthouse these are two different lots or section lines so we're going to try to slough this off back over here well right where this bucket is this is going to be the end of the building and this is going to be 10 feet we're going to try to slope this up but it might be too steep we're going to play it by ear and i guess if we have to then we'll we'll bring it farther out you know who knows we might put more on in the future or we might just put you know a carport or a conic's container or something over here but for now we're gonna try to just you know ease her down there's going to be a man door on this side of the building over here [Music] and that's why we were up there cutting all those limbs off see that's going to be a road up there for the dump truck and equipment there it goes [Music] all right we got gravel underneath that's good news it's pretty thick actually thicker than i thought it was going to be based on all the cracking we got all of this asphalt is coming up fellers you can see it's in really really poor condition the sides are sloughing off everywhere and i had a couple estimates to get this fixed and it's just not worth it this is all just bad bad shape especially down here you see there's not much left of it the barn was put up 14 years ago and so was this so with the addition what a guy's gonna do is just put concrete in all the way down that one hurts that's a huge huge investment but i can't keep fixing asphalt every you know 10 12 years that just doesn't make sense we're just going to do it right the first time get it done put some concrete in here it's going to be a six inch slab and hopefully that doesn't go anywhere in my lifetime kids will have to monkey around with it maybe but i won't so we're going to take some of this gravel and sprinkle it in front of the doors so they can get in and out still and do some work these guys are quick at it here you can see they're grating out this way and i'll show you where they're hauling here in a second but we're going to keep this dirt and repurpose it i'm saving money by not having them haul this off a lot of money and i got a plan with it i think it's going to work pretty good well there's the issue right there with all the cracking and breaking up it's really really thin once you get into the center of it and then if you go back to the outside corners look at the depth change so that's been the issue with this breaking up and i'm glad to get it out of here it just stings the billfold but it's also sinking away from the building really bad look at over here see that huge change previous owner i don't know what he was doing with all this it's like window caulking it's a mess so what he's doing right now is grabbing all this asphalt and he's going to pile it up over here so he could scoop it up throw in the truck we want to get as much of this down first before we start piling all the dirt over there and i'll go over there in a minute and show you what the plan is but we don't want all this on top this is going to be our base or our foundation i'm going to get to work here and start throwing all this back in so he can scoop it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey so what i'm going to do here kind of hard to tell but this is quite the hill here actually and i'm trying to build a berm out farther and just hide some of my cars and wherever this berm ends up we're going to be putting a fence on it and some more cameras and lighting and stuff like that we've been having issues with people just driving on the property and this is going to help with that see there's a chunk of asphalt there now next load all that asphalt should be on the bottom and then this dirt will come over top so i'm gonna have to bring some top soil in too and uh i'll probably go around a skid steer and i'm horrible at leveling stuff with skid steers and doing grading i can wreck stuff and scoop and push but grating not so much but anyway we're going to try to build a berm out here over in rusty acres area and uh try to get some of this hidden then we're going to run a fence line down here just kind of section off this this little area feel bad for the guy though he's got quite the trip back and forth with the truck but that's just the way she goes got to be honest this construction process has been really really hard on a guy's yard here i got dead spots and brown spots and what's this thing and i don't even know what kind of weed that is or that one or this one over here a guy needs some help so a guy did the right thing and signed up for sunday here sunday is an annual subscription that provides all of the lawn care products that you need from fertilizer to weed killer to even seed all based on your region climate soil and well your yard sunday helps cultivate a rich living soil which creates a greener and more sustainable lawn and it's actually very simple to use here's how all you have to do is go to getsunday.com forward slash vice grip lodge next just type in a guy's address and they'll start the lawn analysis for you using satellite imagery and all sorts of science stuff get your customized lawn care plan in seconds be sure to use vice grip 20 during checkout you get 20 off of the whole shebang fellers that's big savings before you know it it's going to show up right on your doorstep just like this and it's going to be ready to use right out of the box in my case just going to hook up this electro digital sprayer to my ready to go pouches spray it on the yard 15 minutes or less you're on your way to a greener yard a couple things that i like about sunday first of all i was blown away and i typed in the old address there they had climate data and rainfall and average soil types and everything to get me started right out of the box and i knew that i was getting product that was specific to my lawn the other thing is let's face it i ain't got to run into town and wheel around through the lawn care section looking at stuff that i don't even know what it means or what what it does i don't know this stuff comes in a bag ready to go i know it's good for the lawn can't get any better than that again go to getsunday.com forward slash vice grip lodge with fellers be sure to use vice grip 20 during checkout save that 20 let's get back to this building i hear a lot of stuff going on over here so essentially we're just coming right off of here and we're going to come out 60 feet uh it's not where this ledge is that's 10 feet from 60. so we're going to be probably right in here you can see the big challenge here is moving all of this dirt out of here and getting this moved out of the way and again this is why we trimmed all these trees and cut all these trees out of here because this whole hillside has got to disappear and we're going to be coming right out this way i'm going to save all this tan and reuse it i'm going to be reusing the windows to try to save some money and there should be a retaining wall back here but we're not going to do that either again to try to save some money eventually i want to bring those big cast blocks in or something like that there's that road i was talking about they're bringing the truck back like that and that's why we cut all those limbs off [Music] they're gonna be scooping this up dump it into the truck and then hauling it back to another area i'll show you that pretty soon one of the other challenges we got is water control when i first moved in the water would run off this hill and come right in under the shop in fact you could see the old line where the dirt was see how high that was so right when we moved in i had to take a bunch of dirt out of here put in drain tile so this tube is underneath the ground and then there's a french drain around it and then all the gutters plug into that and then we laid gravel in here so now when the water comes off the hill it'll either go into the natural french drain or into the drain tile and around the building so unfortunately we got to dig all that up that was right here but i'm going to reuse that as well basically i'm going to be reusing every single piece of material construction material electrical windows 10 wood you name it gravel even that i can just try to save money on this and all the way down to us doing our own trees and stuff like that we're just trying to keep the cost down so we can put that back into the vice grip garage channel on the vehicles and stuff like that the biggest expense by far is going to be the concrete for the slab and then the concrete for the parking pad here because it's a it's a pretty big space pretty much all of this is going to be concrete up through there and also in front of the shop over there this is the drain tile system where it comes out here and runs into the yard so this controls all the water behind the shop and then all the gutters as well come through this so this whole system has got to be moved over to there now and then extended back around the building i heard the teeth are banging out here this was one of our big concerns was hitting some pretty big rock out here but what we're going to end up doing is keeping that rock as rip wrap around the edges when we build this wall so that's why he's separating that out right now he'll probably come back with the skid steer and pile this up somewhere else [Applause] hopefully it doesn't get any worse though the old lawns just taking a little bit of a beating i mean not so much like you know here it's more it you know it's more down and there may we've had a lot of rain recently but it's actually an okay thing nice groove for the sky and make them feel safe up on this ledge i'm sure they'll come back and smooth it out but doubtful will ever see grass up here again unfortunately but here's what she is [Music] he's good at kicking them rocks out nice to see such a good operator he's a pretty young fellow oh that's such good news i was so worried there was going to be a rock shelf in here because then they charge extra for drilling or blasting or getting the hammers in here they make uh you know hammer things that attach to that but of course i have to charge because i'm pretty sure they rent them so far this is looking pretty good still got to go a little bit deeper there though looking at the grade by the way part of this process when they're tinning and putting the roof on the other side they're gonna go through and re-screw this whole roof they're thinking what happened is all of the gaskets that go around those metal screws just rotted away you know after a decade and a half we're going to try to get the leaks under control in here it is absolutely insane when it rains i have to come in here and mop lakes are everywhere and it's rotting the wood in multiple places around here it's actually pretty bad so that's why you always see you know mop buckets and mops laying around all this equipment here squeegees and stuff because we're always in here pushing water and then of course you track stuff around you can't clean up the feets marks and all that stuff so that's part of it too is we're going to try to get this side closed in and this will probably continue like i was saying earlier be the youtube side where we're always fixing and wrenching and then that side will be more just parts and storage and lining cars up getting these lifts over there and stuff like that and and then we'll be able to actually get two more cars under and another car under so we can get hopefully like betty white and things like that that really should be indoors inside i'm going to try to do this in phases for you so we got all the dirt work here and then coming up next will be all the forms and the concrete then we'll get into framing and tan and then finishing so i hope to get you guys you know enough here that you can see the whole entire process from start to finish it'll be pretty cool looks like they're coming back down now doing a little bit more of the grading now that they got a majority of the rock dug out anyway pretty good pile going [Music] this is all the dirt we've moved so far and there is a lot more dirt left to move just building kind of that hill up as we come across i'm just hoping we can kind of hide some of this stuff back there from my neighbors and such but we're going to be looking for topsoil here pretty soon and then reseed this there's a lot of this johnson grass it's for like erosion control and it kind of just takes over the fields down here we're gonna try to get rid of that as much as possible too just had a chat with the dump truck driver and we're gonna start kind of curving that bank over there he's really good at in that dirt where the guys needed to go back and grade uh big thank you to summertown medals that's who's putting on this whole project for me and uh they're the ones that contracted these group of guys and they really know what they're doing and i really get after it so summertown that's where we're gonna get all the product and the concrete material and the actual frame labor and all that stuff uh nice part about that is i don't have to gm any of this they're gonna do it all for me so because you know i got a couple things going is that a dinosaur bone no [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] ah [Music] [Music] they keep sinking in back here too far they're adding dirt but because of the side hill and the weight so this time they're coming in and camping it with the excavator look at the ground move when they hit it it's all that water just coming down that hill there oh yeah she's doing a number [Music] it's the way she goes still a lot cheaper than paying to remove all this [Music] there is so much more dirt out here than i realized like a lot more i'll go show you here in a minute but we're only two-thirds of the way done and this is gonna be the bulk of it back here that's uh about eight feet tall there i know it doesn't look like it but i'm 12 feet tall see and the bulk of it is just to come out here let's go walk over and see how that pile is looking [Music] yeah we're starting to put a curve on her now and bring her out this way kind of circle in the vehicles a little bit more boy that is a lot of dirt it's probably it's got to be well that's probably eight feet tall too there in the center from where the ground used to be right on here but that's good because it's probably going to accomplish what i'm looking to accomplish here plus a little bit more feature in the yard ain't bad it's pretty flat looking good well they shut her down for the night we're losing light here some huge progress they did some grading i don't know what these symbols mean pi times six equals big mac or something double cheeseburger sure they know what they're doing so they'll be back tomorrow finish out the rest of this hill and do some final grading and then they're going to start laying in this rock it's going to be interesting to see how they do that they got to leave enough room in here i don't know where that mark went i think the building is going to end right in here somewhere right around there it's going to be so much nicer having that much room get some cars undercover it should be and then have some room for activities rock is getting heavier as they go back but i think we're gonna be okay still so that's good well we'll catch you in the morning bright and early i think we're starting about 6 45 sun up good morning day two cold and windy today as opposed to yesterday it was really nice and warm and calm looks like a lot of rock sorting so far this morning they got right at it and then of course the goal is to finish out this embankment over here and then we got to do some braiding over on the big pile excuse the mess back here this is coming soon by the way but all of this you can kind of see was gravel and there was just nothing to hold this dirt in place and basically it just completely overwhelmed the gravel and the downside of that too is he starts getting down there and plugging that french drain up so we're hoping to lay all that rock strategically no probably not just throw it in there you know and try to hold some of that stuff back and then like i say someday eventually i like to get some sort of retaining wall or i could build a concrete foundation and do a lean-to off the building get some more space back here which i just store tires and stuff like that originally i had intended on bringing cars around back but this gets so soft i used to park my tractor back here and stuff but it would just sink so we're gonna have to address that sometime [Music] the summertown metals guys just getting after it i guess i could have trimmed a little higher up four trees just getting walloped on i think he's on a big rock here [Music] [Music] oh yeah that was the biggest so far it just broke up a little bit holy cow definitely just over on this edge right in that area you know there's actually a cave right on the other side of those trees see that bush back in there there's a cave back there wouldn't it be funny if we punch into some sort of hole or vein back here [Music] this is looking good here we've got a nice kind of curve in it make it look more natural and then we're going to bring it out a little bit more in the front down here so it kind of just looks like a odd rolling hillish but yeah we're geez good five feet higher than ground level maybe even more out here where the skid steers hit that's probably i don't know nine feet something like that now a lot more truckloads than all of us guesstimated that's for sure [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] we're going to be fighting rain for the next week but these guys are still hard at it until it gets unbearable i guess you can see the back hill is just about where they want it they're starting to slop everything off and look at all the rock they got hopefully they can get this stacked up real nice but it's turning out good they're at grade pretty much right now retaining wall i guess we'll call it it's looking really good see how he's doing that he'll drop the rock in and then he'll take that bucket and just tamp it smash it into that hill today's actually a pretty good day for that because it's obviously wet and moist so they're just driving it into that clayish mud dirt stuff over here on the side they just kind of push it off with the skid steer and then he was there to catch it and just tamp it in it's looking really good [Music] so [Music] it's gonna be so much better than that a little short on rod unfortunately what are we got uh probably i don't know how to count 10 15 feet there is a little bit over here they're pulling up yet might be able to help with that but it's looking good well that's gonna do it for part one of the pole barn extension here summertown got a huge amount of work done we're finding a little bit of weather right now but don't worry this is going to dry up really quick and they're going to be back and it's going to get really exciting because they're going to be drilling and putting in posts so we can start framing thanks guys for watching appreciate it very much we'll see you soon [Music] you
