Build a Garage Cape with studio apartment

this is a 20 28 by 28 cape that we just finished has a 10-foot by 28 foot car port on the side I'm just going to show you some of the things we do for a six inch thick slab and it's a thickened perimeter called an Alaskan floating slab actually put X two rolls of rebar around the perimeter and then a whole mat of rebar two feet apart going both directions 5/8 plywood on the on the roof 2 by 10 roof rafters we use the tripled two by ten caring beam four by four posts interesting right now we're having the solar eclipse right now it's kind of interesting don't dare to look at it this is the back side the siding is a western redcedar before we put it on we stained it both sides at the shop it really needs to be stained on the back to protect it the roof is their architectural shingles we have a gable end vent on each end those are I think 18 by 24 the ridge vent is vented as well to make sure we keep that upstairs as cool as possible that's good for the shingles that way we vent the soffits see if I can get there and show you that if you can see that detail or not it's vented both sides put a door upstairs so they can bring the kayaks or whatever they want up there it's really pretty garage they have a beautiful view as you can see out there put that little eyebrow mansard roof over the doors just for that little aesthetics and help keep the rain out I'll go inside and show you that what it looks like inside both downstairs and upstairs we're in the process of getting the electrical put in waiting on garage doors they haven't come in yet we used wood I juiced at our clear clear span so there's no posts in the middle it's a really nice feature when you're opening your doors you don't have to worry about posts they can span 28 feet on this one put a stairwell in to get upstairs we usually go into the corners that's the best way to do it takes up that much less room in the center studs are 16 inches on center two by fours on on this particular garage I'd say we've built over 300 garages just watch my step it's quite a bit of room up here put a window on that end and then we put the door on behind me it's a 16 feet wide here and then the full 28 feet deep again 2 by 10 rafters 2 by 4 collar ties to tie that all in you can see up daily put gussets in to hold the rafters together again we've done in the Cape style we've probably done 75 garages like this really rugged use a four foot knee wall you can see the wiring it this is the door and again that view just beautiful out there so there you have it
