Bubbline is the BEST! - Adventure Time: Distant Lands - Obsidian BREAKDOWN!

adventure time was always one of those shows where even though i knew how good it was i always had trouble watching it consistently because of how wonky the release schedule would be for new episodes so i rarely watched episodes right away when they would release because i wouldn't even know about them at the time thankfully it seems like the poor advertisement issue has been fixed with the adventure time distant land series because i've seen promos for obsidian all over the place for the first time in ages i was able to watch something adventure time related right on release and my god was obsidian more than i hoped it would be before i get into the greatness of this special i've noticed for a while that the majority of the people who watch my content aren't actually subscribed to my channel so please consider subscribing if you haven't yet it helps me out a lot more than you might think and you'll be able to find my videos way easier than before the special opens with little marceline walking alongside her mother through the ruins of earth left behind from the mushroom war these ruins would soon become the glass kingdom home to the glass people one of the main inhabitants of the glass kingdom glassboy is our secondary protagonist for this special he's voiced by michaela dietz by the way aka amethyst voice actress she killed this role by the way very very happy for her the glass kingdom is ruled by the see-through princess who is sharing an old story to her subjects about how the glass kingdom was saved by marceline thousands of years ago the glass kingdom was a very peaceful kingdom for a while until one day a giant dragon named larvo emerged from the ancient furnace beginning to wreak havoc on the kingdom it wasn't until marceline came to the glass kingdom and scared larvae away with her song that the glass kingdom was able to go back to normal sort of larva was still there just kept at bay by the glass kingdom people singing marcy's song once a year glass boy however thinks marceline might have slayed larvo since he hasn't been physically seen since marceline sang her song and since the furnace used to be a healing spot he wants to go there to fix the crack in his face with larvo not being there anymore at least in his eyes i definitely felt bad for glassboy in these early scenes because this poor kid was just getting discriminated against hardcore because of the crack in his face little did he know yet that a lot of other people also had cracks they were just too afraid to show but that's for later the see-through princess is in a similar situation with her royal advisors i guess not really sure what to call them they're never taking her seriously and they're always trying to overturn her ideas later that night glass boy sneaks back to the furnace entrance as he lowers himself down into the lava pit what do you know larva is still alive and well glass boy barely manages to escape from larvo but because he forgot the key to the main door larvo is barely being held back now see-through princess and her squad find glass boy at the scene so her squad decides to throw him in the dungeon even though he insists he'll find marceline cut to marcy and bonnie at marcy's house making a little cupboard case together i love how marcy's in her bat form for the sole purpose of just hammering a little nail in it's so extra i love it here we get a little montage of glass boy's journey to find marceline with some sprinkles of bubbling goodness in there marceline's been trying to write a new song with a new sound but has been having a lot of trouble getting it down right bonnie wants to hear it but marceline is too embarrassed to play the whole thing because it's not quite ready yet at the time i think she was having so much trouble because the song she was trying to work on had a loving message meant for bonnie just about all of her previous songs she's written were made as a way for her to express negative emotions even though she wanted to move on from those forms of music she was having trouble doing so due to the lack of closure from her past see-through princess's advisors scold her for releasing glass boys so she runs off larvo still trying to break free gives birth to some very creepy creatures from his mouth to find marceline as glassboy continues his journey to find marceline he runs into choose goose definitely does not expect to see him make a cameo but i'm not complaining he tells glass boy to head to the candy kingdom if he wants to find her once glass boy enters the city he hears simon singing i remember you at an open mic inside a candy kingdom tavern since the lyrics have marceline's name in them he begins to freak out trying to approach simon eventually he gets thrown out by a bouncer because of how much ruckus he's making thankfully simon comes outside and notices how much of a fan glass boy is of mercy simon brings glassboy to marcy's house where he tells her larvo has returned here we get a glimpse of exactly what happened to that day when larva was put into hiding marceline seemed to be playing a very angry song that in turn made binary really upset so upset that she broke up with marcy this was the event that caused them to break up for the first time at this point it was very obvious that whatever song marceline played it was bashing bonnie we still don't know what led up to the song though because of the bad memories associated with that event marceline is hesitant of going back to the glass kingdom of course they ended up agreeing anyway due to glassboy's begging skills those evil goop monsters were on the hunt for marceline too scaring simon half to death i love how he's trying to crawl inside the freezer while wearing his old robe saying this is how he copes honestly my favorite character in all of a better time besides marceline i love simon in the ice king here we got a glimpse from marceline's past with her mother they were holed up inside an old trailer with her mom telling her to draw a map of some kind the contents of the map had to be very accurate too i really loved how marceline's past was paced out in the special you know getting glimpses of it scattered out throughout the story with the audience learning what happened between her and her mom little by little specifically when in present day she would patch through an area of her past with the past and present kind of intertwining together with the scenes once the gang arrives at the glass kingdom body goes through the glass kingdom welcome ceremony by striking the giant bell at the front gate then eating a bowl of sand for anybody who doesn't know glass is made from sand so the sand being there isn't completely random marceline is definitely on edge whereas bonnie seems to be kind of excited to be back we'll get into that in a sec once they get inside the castle walls see-through princess's advisors have glassboy taken away again because they don't believe marceline is the genuine article that is until the goop monsters come in with a sneak attack the only way to quote unquote defeat them is with the sound of her base that's what convinces the glass citizens she's the real deal bonnie doesn't seem to be too happy that marceline is getting all the positive attention herself though once they've reached the top of the furnace marcy begins to play the song she wrote about bonnie the proper way since the glass citizens kept singing it wrong although the song is very hateful towards bonnie completely trashing her as a person it's very catchy this whole sequence is another great example of scenes from the past as well as the present intertwining together really well during the parts from the past we're able to see larvae was trapped under a scientific barrier of some kind and that barrier was created by bonnie and will be important in a sec at first they thought the song worked until larvae broke through part of the door melting a glass guard it seemed bonnie anticipated this though the mauro was following them the whole time waiting to bring the barrier technology to bonnie she wanted to redeem herself in the eyes of the glass citizens with a working barrier since the first one was a failure since she's the princess of another kingdom she wanted to be seen in a high light by them but marceline took the spotlight marceline is still determined to be the one to defeat larva though she decides to go back to the place where she was hurt the most so she can write an even angrier song than before which was where her mom left her behind she and her mom are on their way to the secret clubhouse in the past it's very clear that marceline's mom is in very poor health throughout these flashbacks because she's coughing constantly and she's even coughed up blood at one point i felt really bad when marceline sucked the soul out from that parent wolf demon the puppy looked so sad while marceline's mom looked like she was afraid of her bonnie seems to be making progress on how to seal larvo when she notices see-through princess's advisors yelling at her we learned bonnie was the one personally called to the glass kingdom to deal with larva while marceline tagged along uninvited bonnie was having trouble with her original barrier and marceline kept annoying her bonnie was insistent to do her job as a royal protector that she unintentionally pushed marceline to sing that song calling her monster trash was definitely a bit much i feel like that line in particular brought back old trauma because when she was young she thought her mom abandoned her because she was a monster they even both said i don't have time for you right now little marcy eventually reached the old bunker with tons of skeletons inside it's really sad how she convinced herself that she wanted people to get scared and running away from her when they did it was her way of coping with not having her family around anymore this bunker seems to be where mercy and her mother used to stay possibly during the climax of the mushroom war there were drawings of she and her mom together scattered throughout the bunker with other get wall cards addressed to already deceased people i guess they had to share this area with strangers before which i guess kind of makes sense when present day marceline arrives at the bunker she notices the blinking voicemail machine and remembers how it always annoyed her while fiddling around with the button she accidentally hits a play button to hear a message from her mother that she's never heard before her mother ensures her that she's strong enough to handle the world on her own how she's sorry she tricked her but she's always gonna love her and hope she can forgive her glass boy secretly tagged along with marceline the whole time in hopes of getting marceline to reconnect with her negative punk rock ways the last boy's see-through song was able to get marceline to open her eyes realizing she doesn't need to force negativity into her musical work anymore she's grown a lot since then i love how after glassboy agrees he hopes he can show marceline his fave manga i love these meta jokes dude you into one piece how about jjk the giant larvo offspring has now fused and broke marcy's base bonnie's plan to trap larvo also takes action with the glass people luring him into the main city to pour the solidifying solution on him however it only traps him temporarily once he breaks free some of these solid crystals stay attached to him making his attacks more powerful than before once marceline and glass boy return glass boy attempts to lure larvo back into the furnace since marceline no longer has her base as glass boy heads inside the royal advisors hijack body shield generator and crack up its power to tenfold due to how powerful that setting is the furnace begins to crumble around larval glass boy marceline and bonnie both larvo and glassboy get knocked out during the destruction bonnie and marceline have a good heart-to-heart here bonnie admits she'd hoped marceline's song wouldn't work to prove to the glass kingdom how smart she is while marceline apologizes for ditching bonnie because her mom never told her she got sick even after they parted ways it messed up marceline to the point where she wasn't able to be honest about her feelings with marceline thinking it might be the end of their lives she decides to sing the positive song she'd been working on since the beginning of the special monster was probably my favorite song from this entire special yeah i liked it more than eternity with you i'm sorry it's just the truth without a doubt the best part of the song sequence was seeing how larvo ended up the way he did a little tadpole separated from his family as a baby forced to stay in this lava pet growing bitter and alone that parallels with larvo mercy and glass boy were incredible you know larvo having that crack in his head just like glass boy afraid of being judged for it so he covered it up being left alone as a child like marceline then having that negative song thrown in his face thousands of years ago just made things worse overall rather than better and with monster being a positive song about love larva was able to blossom into a peaceful being like he was meant to be all this time such a beautiful way to bring peace to everyone even everyone in the glass kingdom is able to own up to their imperfections so glass boy and the princess won't be walked over anymore everyone besides the advisors of course there's still scum simon eventually shows up fashionably late hoping to help by bringing a few banana guards jake's granddaughter bronwyn and big fin mertens himself he looks like he's got to be at least 30 at this point and i love the jake tattoo he has on his chest too i don't know if that means jake has passed away already and that tattoo is a memento to him if that's the case that's really sad but also really sweet and that ending flashback was such a cute way to end the special seeing how bonnie and marceline first met at one of marceline's concerts this was also where marcy gave bonnie the rock and roll tea you know she threw it into the crowd for bonnie it really felt like a love at first sight moment as corny as that sounds i think that just about does it for this video though i'm really curious to see how the next distant land special will be able to top this one this was damn near peak adventure time for me to be straight up honest with you let me know in the
