we are so back Bridgerton season 3 is out I mean half of it is out for now and of course we're going to dissect the costumes again that's that's what I do that's how I roll that's how I be first of Bridgerton is known for not being a show for history purists we know that it's season 3 by this time anyone that was actually interested in the history of the period probably sizzled out and went back to the Jane Austin adaptations but it is still a period drama so of course we expect it to be stylistically inspired by the era that it takes place in in previous Seasons we saw a mixture of surprisingly well done historical Silhouettes and extremely modern fabrics and that over time became the statement Bridgerton aesthetic the show is also well known for breaking the basic rules of regen SI era clothing such as wearing hats covering the neckline and arms and shoulders during the day high heels not really being a thing bridon also loves tight lacing and heavy Cor both of which were absolutely not a thing back then not to mention unnecessary considering the silhouette of the dresses but that's another topic but as I concluded after watching season 2 the creators seemed to have embraced their unique outlook on the era they were like you know what at this point you're all familiar with it you know what to expect and we are going to deliver they just leaned into the fantasy aspect of it even more than season 1 however when when we gradually saw trailers and promotional materials coming out for season 3 I was very skeptical about this season's costumes it's one thing to make your character wear a wrong kind of sleeve or a dress made of a modern fabric but it's another thing to make them look like this but I was also hopeful because this season we are finally getting the Penelope featherington glow up which is an interesting plot Point costume wise so my general conclusion for this season's costume cumes is that they went off the rails we've seen crazy colors in Fabrics before we have seen ungodly amounts of trim and we have seen Silhouettes that had no place in Regency Era but this is next level the costume Department must have had total freedom this season to do whatever they wanted to do and they they did that they they used that freedom extensively and this is completely subjective but I don't think worked in their favor the World building suffers a little as a result of costumes or the Silhouettes being incoherent the modern inserts take you out of the story more than ever the Silhouettes range from Empire waistline to 1960s to Modern Ure and in some scenes there is barely any Regency left people are saying but it's not supposed to be historically accurate it's it's an inspiration it's supposed to be inspired but I will be honest at some points during during the show I did not see that inspiration anymore of course most of the over-the-top characters were always dressed over the toop ever since the first episode of season 1 the queen and her Court they've always served the same extravaganza the featherington sisters are always outrageous that's like a given cresus hairstyles are always the craziest thing you've ever seen that's also it's been like that for ages but I feel like now it all has gotten to point where you can't even tell the senty that the show is set in which is unfortunate because this season I think for I think that's for the first time ever we're actually getting a clear date at some point of the season and even though we're given that date we also are given high heels we are given spandex leggings there is glitter there is Hollywood waves there is strong makeup eyeliner fake eyelashes and there is moments in the show where the suspension of disbelief is hanging on by a thread and another thing that bothered me this season was the fit there were some dresses that fit really well there were some dresses with the weird 1960s style silhouette with raised waistline but also accentuating the natural waistline we've seen this one before on lady featherington and now this trend seems to be spreading pan has worn a dress like this and most of Eloise's dresses seem to be like that at this point as well in Eloise's case the designer did mention that they were inspir spired by Audrey heurn in the 1960s when creating Eloise's look so I guess that makes sort of sense but there were also a lot of clothes this season especially outerwear that were really really baggy cods PES capes first of all someone clearly thought that Kate charma's beauty is creating too much of a distraction because hair clothes this season to me didn't do her justice I've heard that some garments were Indian inspired but I still think they could use more structure or more creative draping like in this scene I actually thought it's going to be a pregnancy announcement because I haven't read the books I did like this orange Spencer though I think it was really well done second of all cresa now at this point we're used to her being the most overthe toop in the series which is fine it's a good character design and the fact that she's doing more and more as the series progresses and she still can't find a husband also makes sense in terms of her character my issue is mostly with the silhouette you'd think someone that is trying to attract potential suitors will wear something more flattering or accentuate their figure more but cresa clothes this season are very lose her neckline is quite high that might be the actress's personal preference so I'm not judging but I'm just saying considering she is supposed to be a flirt wouldn't it make more sense if she wore something a little more alluring the character that has improved in terms of the fit of the clothing is obviously Penelope I may be biased because I love Nica cockin and Penelope is probably my favorite character but this is also definitely something that they've been hinting at since season one when they put her in those awful badly fitted dresses and then gradually she got better fitted dresses throughout the series and then this season she's finally getting something that looks good on her which is great I did love her looks this season I was perhaps a little disappointed by the transformation dress but I do understand the reasoning behind it the hair that lose Hollywood waves definitely took me out of the period a little bit but mostly I do not understand why she goes from the outrageous Feathering to an aesthetic which I do think is very well done in terms of Storytelling and she goes from this to dark feminine transformation gown to then jump straight into the girly romantic clothes for the rest of the episodes to me it would make more sense if she went straight to the Romantic girly clothes but maybe it's a metaphor of her trying a little too hard and then settling for what feels more like her which also makes sense in terms of Storytelling I just don't think the transformation look was that striking both in Penelope's wardrobe and in general this season there was a lot of Gauzy very thin see-through Fabrics involved which I really liked maybe Regency women didn't wear tool gloves but they definitely had a self spot for anything that that was Gauzy see-through and very light so I think that's a really nice nod to the era and finally let's talk about my two favorite aspects of the costumes this season so far first of all Mrs mandri for probably one of the only characters this season so far that to me embodies regen SI era her dresses fit just well they have they just fit they just fit so well even when they're made of jarring the modern Fabrics she still has the air of Regency about her her hair always serves Regency too so I would absolutely love it if more characters were dressed this way and the other thing I really liked this season was the celestial ball I don't remember who hosted it but the the ball where everyone was dressed in like Celestial inspired gowns costume wise to me the best scene in this season so far the color palette the celestial elements it was all just beautiful everything was sparkly and combined with the dim lighting it just ate it ate this scene was so pretty one last comment I'm going to make is that I think the extras and Side characters embodied the Bridgerton Spirit much better than the main characters this season so far which I think is a shame this is sort of a norm in cinema prior to 1970s 1980s so I thought we were past that that idea of dressing everyone else historically and then dressing the main characters in a weird mixture of modern and fashion but it's also fun to see the costume Department's crazy ideas and experiments there aren't many historical shows where you get the space to do that and where you get so much creative freedom I'm just a little worried that when your creativity has No Limit you end up losing the spirit of the era that you're trying to convey so we'll just see we'll have to see which way it leans when the second part of the season comes out this June these are just my thoughts also do do you like my tiara um bye uh did you know I have a podcast by the way it's called text Tre and in each episode we dissect a different historical text so far we've done 17th century court records and Drug recipes and 184 polish teenagers diary articles written by a guy that experimented with an edaran medium breakup letters from different eras and much more listen now on Spotify YouTube music Amazon music Apple podcast whatever all of the other podcasting platforms bye
