Blake's Tampa Bay Rays out out of the diamond six and seven with a 419 earned run average just back after stay on the injured list after having surgery in the middle of the summer loose bodies in the elbow very similar to what native Aldi went through he's come back strong he's only made one appearance since then but as a real good one his last time out he was hitting 96 97 on a gun Red Sox lineup brought to you by toyota's official website for deals buyatoyota.com Mookie Betts back in there tonight in a two spot JD Martinez is the designated hitter Jackie Bradley batting sixth in this evening's lineup sandy lagoon catches in bats night taking on Snell the 2018 American League side Young award-winner just missed a big chunk of the season because of an elbow problem they are hoping he's gonna be ready to go if they get to postseason play now let's take a look at the Rays defense third base Wendell Adamas is short low at second Choi it first in the outfield you got meadows and left here by in center Garcia in right and the battery is snow in the arno the umpires are brought to you by Toyota's website for deals buyatoyota.com it's Chris Conroy behind the plate Paul nartz at first base ed Hickox at second and Carlos Torres at third we're available this telecast appeared in Spanish by selecting the SE P button on your TV remote ASAP presented by Toyota visit copper to night but that's a guess because we're on the roof hey great to have you thanks for bailing us out tonight hey I'm glad to be here I'm only three and a half hours away mmm dogs gonna be fine but a bit of a stomach bug is mentioned we got a text about an hour ago so that everything is finally staying down so that's a good a good a good thing Marco Hernandez about the lead things off against the very tough Blake's no I'm glad to hear him he's doing a little bit better he's at a whirlwind in the past few years huh and a half right all of that has gone very very well but not feeling too good this morning when he got up Marco 2:52 with a couple of home runs getting a lot of playing time here down the stretch Red Sox trying to find out exactly what they have in Marco Hernandez and lately it's been a very cool bat trying to get hot against one of the best left-handers in baseball the first one is ball one and we're underway is that touches 95 looks like that elbows rebounded very nicely for him it's amazing the medical world today you know situations like him and Baldy they probably would have been diagnosed 15-20 years ago but now they're being diagnosed and they're a quick surgery and all of a sudden a month two months later they're back in the mouth or 95-97 just came back to make his first start since the 21st of July he went to innings against the Dodgers last Tuesday and they were very happy with how the baseball came out of his hand at a sensational year last year season to go 21 and five with a 189 GRA and ran away with the Saigon doing David Price is the only other ray to win the scion and a one to two Marco Hernandez down he goes swinging one away a key matchup presented by Sullivan tire and complete Auto Service we're always here to get you there Lakes now last five times out against the Red Sox poor and old with a 1.16 tra that was not the only reason it was a big reason why he won the Saigon last year what he did against a team that would want to win the whole thing he was incredible in you could have been either way I mean Verlander had an unbelievable year as well but if you go by the numbers the CRA was better obviously you didn't have as many starts as Berliner so there was a good you know the toss-up between those two but you know obviously Snell prevailed Mookie batting out of the 2 slot tonight hitting 292 at 28 home runs did not play yesterday he's played sparingly here over the last week with that foot he is 2 for 5 in the series but disappeared their changeup you just see why smells so good I mean that fastball the way he elevates it it's tough it looks so good your swing and it's by you and then he throws that changeup and that's not even a second best pitch his curveball is by far a second best pitch they're hoping he might get to the fourth inning tonight you'll have another outing after this they hope they'll go 5 that's the build up and then they will be able to use him if they get there in postseason play yeah you know I talked to Dana about that with Ivaldi and how you know they're not gonna playoff race right now so in my mind thing well doesn't make sense to ramp him up but mentally what that does for a player at the end of the season knowing that he finished strong now he's got no question marks going into that next season and he was strong yesterday got off to a bit of a rocky start then settled in and gave the Red Sox a quality start six innings three runs he got the win yeah I mean Nate's a guy that's got to do you know step up for this team he's done it in the past he's always been kind of riddled with that elbow injury with you know flakes in there and trying to stay healthy he's a guy that's 100% he goes all or nothing and he can't back him down as a coach or as a pitching coach you don't want that you don't want to have to back a guy down you want to go ahead and say hey step on the gas and don't let off had to be a big confidence booster for him yesterday that's gonna be ball four some wookiees on it we'll take the walk with Raffy Devers coming up next it's a big boost for the rotation in general where they're almost at a point now where two of their five starters is bullpen day Nate was kind of one of those question marks too because you don't know how deep he's going to be able to go how many his pitch count is you know so it's almost they got three bullpen days another five there's also a reminder that you know with this offense even though it hasn't been exactly the offense of a year ago it's still been very very productive if the Red Sox get decent starting pitching the guys currently here they've got a very good chance to win Rafael 307 with 31 home runs he's tied for the major league lead in total bases and putting the cap on a marvelous individual year JD Martinez on deck tied for second in the American League with 112 runs batted in I think we noticed about Snell the last time he faced the Red Sox this summer he can be very very slow to the plate he can take all night out there sometimes I mean kind of relies on being a left-hander and that read move but as anybody knows if you're a base runner you were gonna go on first move and if he's slow to the plate you slow to first you have a chance to be at that out Deborah's comes up empty on the cutting to miss and one ball and two strikes we talked about his curveball but his slider is the pitch that he uses as well almost as a cutter you see Devers swinging at a pitch that's in the dirt but that's how you get swings and misses by throwing that 95 97 hour fastball and it looks just like the fastball come out of your hand and a one-two pitch snell out of Seattle Washington now 26 years old bio says he owns between 225 and 250 pairs of shoes he began his collection in the seventh grade by saving money here and from catching the bull pens of his father's pitching students a good thing he didn't stick with the catching dinner on the mound his dad's a head baseball coach at a community college in Washington where question is does he wear the shoes or is it just sit in his closet it doesn't say that in the bio it's a lot of shoes and that's a lot of shoes unless your guarantor Stan that's a lot of shoes one man away - two will not be made I guess we pound it to death when we talk about attendance here at Tropicana Field but here's the team battling for their lives for the second wild-card and that's your attendance tonight heads we've always talked about that as players coming in here and you think these guys were going on a playoff run why can't you get more fans but nobody wants to deal with that traffic of going over the bridge coming back over the bridge I know there's a lot of talk about next year maybe moving there goes Mookie Betts and big file back here by Denver's straight to the screen but are they gonna do I heard half the games here half the games many Montreal made me move the team to Nashville Vegas or Montreal I know that's a lot of just talking speculation but you know what cash is done over there with this team they deserve to get a little bit more credit they get deserve to get a little bit more fans really sure do I mean they've got the lowest pace raw payroll in all the baseball salty and yet here they are on a big night like this this is a very meaningful game and they've got hardly anybody in the ballpark and a nasty pitcher like this on the mound second strikeout for smell and she puts away raku Devers talk about nasty pitcher comes back with that slider it looks just like his fastball he's coming down in the way in his own so as a hitter you got to protect the two strikes and that ball just falls off the table JT Martinez D H 302 with 35 home runs but 99 runs batted in so one away from a third consecutive 100 RBI season mouki will take off and another foul ball he had that one stolen yeah that's the second time I mean I know what there is he had two strikes he had to protect but you know on that one right there JD's got to see that he's got a good jump hey I'll take a strike but when you're facing the guy like Snell you don't want to give him a strike see Mookie just taken off on first move had it all the way but as a hitter you're like alright I can't take a strike I need to make sure I get on this first pitch he'll run again and I'll throw as it is drop by d'Arnaud there'll be a stolen base for a Buki bets down into scoring position saying that's all on stone you got a guy you know can run he know you're slow to the plate he got a good jump last pitch and Mookie does a great job saying okay I'm gonna try it again you can't can't succeed unless you try tough pitch for the catcher to be able to pick and make the throw now he's got an RBI situation for his teammate now Mookie Betts with his 16th stolen base so a single here by JD should do it and get him to 100 runs batted in strike right on the black JD not so sure that's what you get from the asite young pitcher he's gonna be able to hit his corners I know he throws 95 97 but he knows how to pitch he knows that I have to live on the corners against the Red Sox offense that is so potent that at any point can hit a home run and put your team behind them in a hurry a ball and two strikes soft one they were the curveball and missing two and two and salt d'Arnaud he was set up he kind of wanted on the outside backdoor corner make it look like that fastball in the corner and then it drops off the table to get a swing and a Miss you know typically as a hitter they throw a pitch on the corner you kind of keep your eyes out there and you look for that pitch so as a catcher you want to call something that goes off that in order to get the swing in this Sam Travis who got the nod to play first base tonight is on deck Snell with a long look in here to his catcher [Applause] three and two we talk to lengths about this the past few weeks the milestones that the Red Sox players have been to achieve this year and the fact that they're not in a playoff race it's I mean it's just scary that's how good baseball and how good this division is and how it's become doesn't show you how important pitching is no question about that that's dancing off second check swing they appeal he didn't offer that's gonna be ball four Snell has walked a couple of men and Sam Travis will dig in here in a moment and that's a perfect example of JD Martinez who's on the verge of his fourth fifth year in a row of 35 homers 100 RBIs you know you don't want to give in to a guy like that so he's okay with throwing a 3-2 changeup with a guy like Sam Travis on deck who has done okay but he's not your David Ortiz or your Devers or Mookie Betts you know so having those guys in the lineup behind big hitters like JD it's so important Sam will check in to 224 with six home runs with mookie betts at second Janie Martinez on at first Snell having difficulty hooking up with d'Arnaud we saw this before his life start at Fenway Park where there's constantly stepping off and calling out his catcher and here he comes again yeah this is a tough situation as a catcher I'm looking on deck seeing there's a lefty on deck I don't have to give in but at the same time Snell hasn't had too many outings you haven't caught up too much so you don't know exactly what he likes to go to or what he's thinking even though you have a game plan going into the game it changes in a hurry when you got a man on second and that run can score yes if you be talked about also everyone's got a sky report the analytics of this game have gotten so advanced and have really been almost taking over the game so these guys have cards in their hats the catcher's got the wristband to know what pitch to call at what time so you don't see pitches very often call it time about having that guy come out and talk about it you know so that to me that shows a picture that knows how he wants to pitch how he wants to attack the zone and I would rather have that then a guy just looking at a card saying okay this is what I'm Africa's you take the human factor out of the game he take the the person you know out of the division the eyes all one pitch to Travis and it pokes that one foul jazz roll the right-hander already up in their bullpen maybe something they are not that thrilled in he's walked a couple of men but he only threw 26 pitches in his last outing but he was much crisper than this I'm still surprised to see that I know this game means a lot to the Rays but you gotta trust that Snell has been the situation before he knows how to pitch how to get himself out of this Jam and I know they don't want to fall behind quick can't imagine he's on a pitch count that's less than 50 and the difference was at this point in his last start he was one pitch away from completing two full innings he's not even out of the first inning here tonight 1 2 pitch to Sam Travis just watching his up in the zone with his fastball but with the New Age launch Angel time what do you want to be I've seen numerous amount of times pictures going to that up a pitch three four or five times in a row but it doesn't look like you just trying to get there looks like he's just kind of overthrowing it a little bit still have that feel you see his breaking balls burying it he's not able to go for a strike you know as a hitter you see that you tend to lay off anything that spins well I would say overall the way to the backstop and that'll advance both runners Mookie Betts into third Gaetti Martinez the second a big time wild pitch it almost looked like d'Arnaud it was a little cross stuff anytime you see a catcher go down to his knees typically he's waiting for that pitch to go in the dirt snow comes with 95 miners fastball up in the zone so I want to think something else was supposed to be thrown I also don't remember Blake's now last season being so deliberate yeah he's definitely working a lot slower than I remember because the Raceway is always down the mountain go to down runners at second and third and he struck him out so he strikes out three while walking to and he gets out of a jam it'll be Wendell famine Meadows doe joy and Garcia Wow kiermaier and adamas against the righty was three and eleven for the year with a 566 tra making his fifth appearance with the Sox and his fourth start of the year for Boston and the last time I was his worst he went just two and two thirds against the Giants five hits four earned runs he walked a couple he did not have great stuff in that performance Wendell a 234 hitter with a couple of home runs but hit one of those in this series [Music] no score after a half inning Red Sox did threaten but left two men in scoring position and she sees whether you're old school style pitchers he's gonna throw a lot of stuff he's gonna throw a slider changeup curveball fastball he's gonna mix trying to play the chess game with the hitter you know so look for him to hit the corners try and get quick outs put ground balls sign with the Red Sox is a minor league free agent right at the end of August and he began his Red Sox career with three hitless innings against the Yankees after beginning this season with the Milwaukee Brewers before they cut him loose and this signing looks a little bit different than the one I saw in Toronto where he was using this fastball early in the count trying to establish that strike zone early fill the zone up you see him go to that breaking ball early and often - - and he had a notion and he did go it's a swing and a Miss for strike three so he gets his first man and punches out Wendell let's take a look at the Red Sox defense from third to first we got Devers Bowens Hernandez and Travis in the outfield we got Hernandez and left JBJ Center Mookie Betts and right on the mound she seems behind the plate nailed julisan is 11th major league season he's also pitched for Colorado Arizona the Angels the Padres and Milwaukee Tommy Pham the hitter 276 he's belted 20 home runs she seems been around he's been on different teams nationally an American they've been different roles starter long relief yeah well I've seen that night so far is he's really just coming out and saying hey I only got a few innings to pitch I'm just gonna let it heat he watches mechanics his head's kind of flying open a little bit it's causing this ball to leak back over the plate causing a slider to stayed back door or inside to a righty you know that's not typically how he usually pitches - one filed away shortly how many times would you go out when you had something you wanted to talk about a mechanical issue with a picture like out of every five visits how many of those might be about that probably a lot of it goes to get to know your teammates and know what type of personality on the mound if you can talk about something like that some guys didn't want you to say a word to them at all some wait till you get to the dugout some could make the adjustment on the mound you know in this situation I definitely would probably go out and talk to them and say hey you know relax slow down a little bit let's not trying to overdo it let's make sure we get our strikes in let's make sure we get quick outs don't make any mistakes I'll bounce back you get banned there so I got back-to-back hitters in front of Austin Meadows at the same time he's got two K so I probably won't say a word to him right now five weeks yeah now those 289 he's homered thirty-two times he has been the top power source this year for Tampa Bay he's driven in 88 he's had a good year and he'll look at a strike he's picked up three home really really nice you look at the Rays over the years they haven't had anybody that's really kind of stuck for a long period of time and you're Crawford's and then that three hole that's the guy you want that's going to do some damage he's gonna be up there every at least three or four at-bats hopefully more but he's done a great job for the raid big acquisition from the Pittsburgh Pirates made a great trade they got him along with the right-hander Tyler glass now in exchange to right-hander Chris Archer in July of last year yeah it's worked out definitely worked out glass now is a nasty nasty right-hander big tall guy throws hard looks really well at the beginning of the season and meadows was that guy's just a magical plane doesn't strike down a lot finds a way to get on and put the shift on he hits the other way he's got power you can do so many things at the plate steel bases as to dance to get free of that one three and two she seemed just trying to go in with that fastball make a comeback try and get the the take gotta move his feet sometimes get him uncomfortable he's been feeling really good nothing wrong with that now look at her finish him off and make it three consecutive caves and it just nubs that one foul stuff that slider right there where he's trying to go down and to get the swing and he just kind of over throws it a little bit and it comes out just a little bit early and just started spins there thankfully had enough off of it is that got it into a left-hand hitter so dangerous meadows as a brother Parker's an outfielder selected by the Tigers last year in the second round it's an outfielder drift away for ball four so Meadows is on another Stein home will be next the gap to get expert emergency care the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center first-aid station located behind section 12 on the lower concourse VI d MC is part of that is really help visit VI DMC org when you woke up this morning in West Palm Beach your first thought was oh man am I gonna be reading some promos today I woke up click the kids at the bus stop took my youngest to school came home started a little bit of my homework got the phone call and right away when in panic mode and got here as quickly as you humanly could yeah and it was it was an easy drive to get here but yeah I was definitely thinking about the promo reads and how how am I gonna mess this up strong out of the game tonight Dano is 16 home runs 69 runs batted in as a runner at first no score in the first inning then sacks are heading to Texas insulting you'll be making that trip to the first couple of games there against the Rangers if Marta Rodriguez going for that 19th win tomorrow night at 8:05 and Rick Porcello to make the start the following night and Thursday will be a date game and a Red Sox will head on home for the last three games of the season against the Orioles flyball right-center field on the move though is Mookie Betts to run that down and that will do it one man lat [Music] honoring last championship in number 156 right sides to lose to the Indians 43 in extra innings mookie betts 4 for 6 with three extra base hits including the solo home run we have a nothing nothing game going in the second inning tonight here in st. Petersburg Florida Mookie is in the lineup this evening thus far has walked and sold at a base Jackie Bradley banning out of the 6ol tonight Ned Yost has announced he's retiring at the end of the season as the manager of the Kansas City Royals took over in 2010 built them into a winner and deliver that long-suffering organization its first World Series title in three decades he did a great job the Rose I can't imagine you won't see him again probably not in a uniform but I'm sure you'll do something up in the front office line shot based in the center-field past the lunging Adonis and Jackie Bradley as a single at 65 years old they've been on a year-to-year contract last few years and he will retire as the club's career wins leader with 744 today the only manager lead the Royals to back-to-back World Series appearances losing to the Giants and seven that was in 2014 then beating the Mets in five the following year you've seen how tough it is to do something like that to be able to repeat and go belly reapeat but go to a World Series back-to-back that takes such a toll on your body on your mind shorter offseason and he didn't have so phenomenal job with those young players over there in the development program you've seen a few jobs will be open this winter I think be interesting to see what the Cubs do Matt's been there I know they were hoping to make a playoffs bran they were in it and still I guess mathematically in it but a lot of things going to happen Kansas City losing a hundred games again so they really went to the top of the Mount of the very bottom work these Hernandez with a high fly in the center field for kiermaier one gone like a lot of small clubs Royals were forced abduct their roster after a great run of success and into a tailspin so best of luck to Ned Yost did a great job there though and he kind of transitioned the game you know what teams were trying to do and they saw a team like the Royals who had not went out and spent a bunch of money to get players they had a lot of young players that they brought through the organization that helped them win a World Series the next thing you know every other teams trying to do the same thing is Chris Owings anyone 31 with two home runs sandy Leone on deck facing the left-hander and the siyoung winner blake Snell tonight all he's getting it not at shortstop this evening night offers into bull dykes snow definitely looked like his normal self he's up in the zone he's missing why he's missing down and in trying to go away he's definitely not in his midseason form which is to be expected which is probably why the Rays had somebody up trying to get somebody loose just in case so I was and ER there chatting up the captain Jason Varitek Josh not too often do you get a guy like that in your Clubhouse in the dugout to sheet stuff off of I know he was huge in my development came over from the Rangers and it's kind of in that situation where this was it I had an opportunity I wanted to make the most of it and the captain being who he is you know took me in and basically develop me into the play I became would you say the number one thing you got from Jason Varitek because you guys used to work quite often together watch you guys from up here a lot was the number one thing I think the biggest thing he taught me was control what you can control I was coming over to the Red Sox I wanted to make a name for myself I was coming from the Rangers where I was trying to do too much and I always felt like oh if I didn't have a good game it's because I didn't prepare a writer I didn't do something in the game and he told me solicit control what you can control after you make that after you make contact with the ball or after you call a pitch it's out of your hands you know if the pitcher misses up that's not you you gotta get him back in and I think that mindset helped me relax and play the game that I knew I could there's your millennium team talking about this the last couple of weeks and who starts to capture for your Red Sox team of the millennium well captain gets my vote no doubt about it he's not unanimous then it's rigged each day fans can vote via Twitter and tonight we're going to be doing the centerfielders the winner will be revealed on Red Sox final and the center fielders are Coco Crisp Johnny Damon Jacoby Ellsbury and Jackie Bradley jr. oh it's a tough one and it's from 2004 to this year who would be your pick on that list [Music] it's a great list actually Jackie's been such a tremendous defensive centerfielder in particular on a champion you know the guy on that list that probably should get a little more love in my opinion is Coco Crisp yeah I agree I mean Coco was a tremendous centerfielder but against that particular league of guys he probably gets the short end of the stick yeah I mean Johnny Damon the career he put together obviously his name alone gets a recognition Ellsbury a couple World Series you know add some injury prone years but what he did in 13 early 12 I mean the numbers he put up in ridiculous since homeruns went up by thinking 80% I mean he was couldn't get him out have him out of the lineup hurt the team and we all know that you know Johnny went to the Yankees eventually and many will hold that against him for the end of time but 2004 when it goes is to throw down and not in time it'll be a stolen base with Jackie Bradley Jackie a public heard us talking so he said you know what I'm gonna go ahead and steal some basis you know JB J is he's just a half an inch away from becoming that complete player you see him found pitches off just missing pitches it's the consistency that he's lacking right now at the plate so I know fans want to see him be a little more consistent put the ball in play stop striking out so much always easier said than done but he puts the work in even though he's a gold Glover out in the outfield he's still out there early everyday working it's gonna come Jackie has still made this month a couple of the best catches that he made all year so continues to play an a very high defensive level you write about the strikeouts that's something that just has to be attended to that's gonna be ball four so Snell has already walked three men it bullpens starting to move around again that was a great at-bat by CEO going from o2 to they'll get a walk out of that he's just trying to find it his mechanics and I can't help but think that his his pace his slow pace is really affecting the way he's been able to command his own Schneider the pitching coach out there with d'Arnaud the top half of the second in a scoreless game and a huge one for Tampa Bay you can't tell it by the lack of buzz inside the ballpark but they are dead even with the Cleveland Indians for the second and final American League wild-card spot I think I'm just speaking for myself I can't speak for the guys out there but you know they don't have the fans that they usually do or the fans they would have if you were in a bigger market with the Red Sox and the Yankees so that pressure feeling isn't what you would have in the Red Sox the Red Sox have 60 to 100 media people in there every night they're expected to win the Rays are always sitting there saying hey we're not even supposed to win so let's just go out there and have fun and play the game and that's probably been accredited their success t-mobile's connection to the Game three of the race starting pitchers have come off the injured list recently as they fight for a playoff berth the guys with great stuff to the guy in the middle might be the most talented of the three last six and one when he has been healthy with 192 re RA Snell in some trouble now sandy the old batting right-handed you're absolutely right class now just because I faced my face Snell - and he's one of those guys that you can't let him get strike one because he's got two or three other put out pitches that you don't want to get to see try and jump on him early that 95-97 up in the zone looks good by the time you get to it it's too late he's got so many weapons to get you out back laughs now just he's got so much so much more in the sense of who commands his own early on both sides of the plate he's able to use the slider on both sides of the plate he's six eight yeah so when he's throwing tea he's 20 feet away from me by the time ball gets there only 26 years old Katrina's isn't too small either no it's neither is this guy Snell's about six five the one one with runners at first and second and time granted before he delivered the pitch you got Charlie Morton he's a big guy power sinker they've got a really good rotation that could set him up pretty well for the playoffs he had plenty of options to go to to that first game and that one game playoff a very gritty ballclub in there for a strike [Applause] can they get in Indians are not playing tonight the Indians have a more difficult schedule because they have to face the Washington Nationals or battling for a wild-card in the National League right now yeah I said I thought the Indians definitely had the easier schedule because you had Detroit the Royals in teams that they should be able to pound and get through pretty easily yeah I think they did for a long time yeah then I guess the last few weeks they've kind of fallen off a little bit but I think a lot has to do with what the Nationals do against Philly I really do I think that if if they go ahead and solidify that playoff spot I don't think they care whether they play at home or away for that game you know they're gonna have a pretty good setup with whether they want to go to Corbin or if they want to go Scherzer you know it's kind of up to them and then they could set it up for the playoffs after that sandi hitting 203 with five home runs as runners at first and second with one away and a pop up back toward the netting Dino has room and he's got it senator Lyon retired and that is out number two @midnight catcha convinced to our version tonight's game on sockson 2 is presented by Bigelow T the official hot tea of the Boston Red Sox knock that one out of the park didn't Yin well they tried to throw a curve ball I mean they misspelled Bigelow so I was really really struggling no you know the like a pro you just darted right around it nailed it so tell them I'm a pro I'll make the adjustment if need be but I expect them to be professionals to Mike Niraj you just sitting there sipping some coffee you pushing some buttons or maybe some Bigelow tea maybe Marco Hernandez struck out first time up [Applause] raise them in trouble all season long against the Red Sox they're 11 and 7 head-to-head against Boston eight and one at Fenway well the Red Sox have not been good at home all season long which is strange considering that the fan base they have usually don't leave on the road games it's a home game for him trying to figure that one out all season and we are not alone watch snow pick off a few times he picked off at JPJ bets that's one thing we always talked about with any left-handed pitcher and that's your bread and butter I'm gonna go ahead and work on that every day in spring training every time I throw a bullpen I'm working on my pickoff maybe you've got a gift you got to use it it's ranked my top pitch 95 miles an hour and look at that spot he just tip your cap in he's been throwing fastball up in the zone first it back second the bad first pitch is up and then he comes back and paints that good I'm going to swing at that you're lucky to file it all right and with one strike it's really no point of swinging at it I mean his eye level went from up here straight down and away so now he's kind of in protection mode he's had some command issues but he's also made some great pitches like foul as Hernandez hangs in mookie betts would be next see that's a situation there last year Oh two good pitchers sigh young pitchers they're not gonna miss down the middle to play with a two strike pitch they're gonna hit their spot up in the zone to make sure no mistakes are made or from throw them an off-speed pitch I know I'm not trying to get too much on it I'm going to try and make it exactly where I wanted to go he's definitely not feeling good tonight here comes his 49th pitch trying to get the third out second tempting enough he stayed away again they've had Chazz row up twice already warming in the bullpen [Applause] adèle they were expected to try and get somebody up this early in the game but we talked about this every game matters from here on out I sure do for Tampa Bay [Applause] - and - Jackie Bradley at second Chris Owings at first when tonight would put the Sox at 82 and 74 and secure a winning year never thought in a million years back in Fort Myers would be talking about late September and the Red Sox just trying to have a winning season - two you know talk to was my job but I talked to a lot of great pitchers Beckett its lackeys Smoltz Dempster's and he learned it over time because when you're young and he could throw 95-97 you just kind of rely on that but it's almost more important to be able to locate in these situations you know put the guy away that put away pitch you see younger guys nowadays not being able to put a guy away because they're trying too hard to make that pitch and they leave it up then they fouled off next thing you know you're in the second inning with 51 pitches boy I'll tell you what he can take a long time out there still staring in human rain delay dome to to line shot that's a slicer down into the corner and a fair ball and that will bounce how to play but it brings in the run Jackie Bradley will score in a searing line drive by Marco Hernandez who really needed one and here comes the manager the night will be done for Blake Snell they got to be a little concerned about weight they saw here if they intend to use him in postseason play I mean I was give your credit to Marco he needed a home believable job got two strikes right away on two tough pitches he fought he kept making mistakes over the middle of the plate and the more pitches a hitter sees the better they're gonna beat you saw Marco just going with that fastball once again left over the middle the plate RBI double mookie betts in with runners at second and third taking on a new pitcher and it's the right-hander Chad roll has been warming up quite a bit to get into this thing like Snell knocked out of the game even one run was enough to do that because he also walked three men and it was clearly laboring out there two down Loki will pop this one up sky-high on the right side of the diamond Choi in foul ground to retire the side of the Red Sox on the board first tonight a [Applause] 5-hour commitment to improve Community Health and adjust the most pressing public health challenges to learn more visit CBS help calm /cs on the Red Sox have one nothing lead and they've knocked the starter Blake Snell out of the ballgame Snell probably had as much to do with that himself as he tries to come back from elbow surgery during the summer that is one-nothing Sox team a enjoy first baseman hitting 255 with 16 home runs and they say has the best sense of humor on the ballclub that he is the funny guy that gets everybody laugh and gets everybody cracked up does impressions does jokes he's hilarious well you got to have one of those guys in your Clubhouse if you want to have fun and win it seems like every winning team has it got it's able to kind of keep everybody at ease and not panic it's usually the bigger guys sometimes the smaller guys Pedroia Pedroia was always the go-to guy you'd walk into the clubhouse sometimes in the afternoon chopper to first base and down to get his Travis and everybody would be on the floor laughing it's something he said let's go to Garen well okay Alicia teen has been effective ever since she's been with the Red Sox and Alex Corps was telling us that he's had a tough season but it was fastball command but they were able to find a few things with his fastball when he saw with the Sox now Jesse says it was telling us that he wants to make the most of this opportunity show that he's healthy and that he can pitch but it's all about winning and he's happy to do whatever he can to help this team and guys core was also telling us that she has seen has been huge in the clubhouse he said he's a veteran player who knows that his role is to help the younger guys and he's really become a mentor for Eduardo Rodriguez as well as Darwin said Hernandez he's certainly right about you know guy who's been around and done a few things Uli's has been the opening day starter three different times in his career for Colorado and thirteen of Padres in 17 and Milwaukee this year team that eventually let him go slapped his short Owings quickly on it do down and to me that says a lot about his character I mean toughest thing to do when you're going to a new team is to you know fit in and he's done exactly I just fit in and not only fit in but he's taking a mentor role a leadership role with some of the younger pitchers and I mean there's a lot to be said those guys in this game are a dying breed and you need those in order to be able to have that success in that goal of winning a World Series Peter Fairbanks firing away in the bullpen for Tampa Bay Brandon loud the second baseman he's hit 16 home runs going after the first once a fair ball and Travis taps the bag for the out and that is a very fast inning Porsche seen paka the Sox fans and attendance here inside the Trop raise will go back to the bullpen the third pitcher already tonight right-hander Pete Fairbanks he pitched on Saturday perfect sixth inning against the Sox here and he can throw very hard as Deborah's would a high fly into left field but Meadows with room there on top of the track to make the play happy L old for two tonight and very uncharacteristic at-bats for the Rays but any big league team I mean your I know your starting pitcher came out but it was a long inning you know you kind of want to see some pitches give your defense a chance to take a little breather maybe see a pitch I mean I think every guy swung at the first pitch Gesine had a four pitch inning his JD Martinez he walked in the first inning Fairbanks with an average fastball velocity of ninety seven point four yet a high er a of 750 and 18 appearances Skye underwent Tommy John surgery during his junior year of high school and then it happened again he had had the surgery once again two years ago I missed all of 2018 you don't see guys that have time I jumped twice make it very often I know a guy Sean Burnett who had three and I mean he even made it back and pitched pretty well last year in the minor leagues ended up retiring last year but that's such a you've seen it more often in younger players for sure which is scary was native aldi his head of twice Sam Travis on deck in there for a strike I mean I see it so often now you see guys they're in high school they play their season during this uh once a February or into January until end of May then they jump right into Somerville then they played two months of summer wall where they pitched a ridiculous amount of innings toward a bunch of off-speed pitches and as soon as they finish with that they jump into Fall Ball these guys don't take a break Mitch Moreland is at a great series is on deck right at the shortstop with Thomas he'll sling it on to get GD two up and two down and now Mitch who did not start Sam Travis did but now Moreland being announced to hit obviously will stand to game to play for his base Saturday here hit the go-ahead solo home run in the 11th on Friday did two home runs and matched the season I with four RBIs so closing the season in fine style is up to 18 home runs Manny with the bases empty he's getting ready to go to Texas where he's a legend yeah you know he's done great things when he was in Texas and obviously done great things in Boston I feel like guys like him and the Broncos don't get enough credit because it's so tough you're not scheduled to start so you're doing your routine because you never know when you're gonna go in and what point you know snow has a bad first inning a tough second inning so right away you're okay now I gotta make sure I'm ready to go because I know I'm going in soon as a righty comes in these things that one drives that one to the alley and that's going to drop in and up against the wall as he will try to the second base with a double then again we might have trouble getting him on the bus to get out of here the way swung about in this series I'm telling you he's just a professional hitter professional player his demeanor everything about him sitting on the bench not knowing he's gonna play okay go ahead and hit off Fairbanks no 97 all right I'll just shoot a double into the gap he's just a professional player all around now next year will be a free-agent year for Mitch his immediate future with the Red Sox certainly up in the air at this point I think most people probably leaning toward the idea he will not return will continue his career elsewhere but he's been a terrific guy for the Red Sox obviously a tremendous defensive first baseman gold Glover they're at a huge home run in the World Series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles last October he's gonna have some options I know he enjoyed his time here and would love to stay but you know with the youth and the young players coming up there's a lot of different options and there's a few other guys on the field tonight that may not be here next year Jackie Bradley base hit and a run and he stole a base after the single in the second inning and I think you're absolutely right salty that the on the field look of the Red Sox front office is obviously going to be redundant the on the field look at the Red Sox next year is is gonna be very very different there's there's a lot of question marks with centerfield th first base Brock hold you know got like I said guys like Mitch and Brock they bring so much to the team not only in the clubhouse but on the field they can play different positions you see Brock playing the outfield play second third and he's a guy that every team would love to have to go with pencil in anyway now that World Series home run we're talking about his game point Red Sox were down they needed this they're the worst way to turn their luck around in that particular World Series game a three-run blast it has not come down yet they really has it man they had there was it seemed like every series they played in there was a different guy that jumped up and you know basically carried the team Jimmy J Mitch Moreland Mookie JD Martinez I mean the list goes on bullpen everybody was just a fact in the next year's can't forget of course Steve bureaus who's the World Series MVP it hit three home runs if you like homeruns yeah if you like coal mines you like home runs to break the other teams back Jackie looking to pick up an RBI here to down Fairbanks with a 2 2 pitch and a rocket into right field that's going to keep on rolling you get all in the wall that'll drive in more little Jackie with a second hit tonight as he stems a double and a Red Sox lead it to min I think I'm gonna say this between the two clubs and I know it's early in the game the Red Sox looked like the team scrapping for a wild card well I mean the Red Sox have done this all year with the bats it's nothing the issue you know Jackie you seen him be hot and cold but he's hot he's tough to get out and that pitch right there's a tough pitch for you know on left-hander not to hit I mean it's down and in right with her sweet spot so when you make that pitch you got to make sure you don't leave it up you got to get in the dirt now back-to-back doubles with two down in the third brings up Gorky's Hernandez Olfa wanna fly to center he is 1 for 9 in the series he is getting opportunities both for his last 8 so talk about the world says who who do you like for think the Dodgers will get back in again or the Braves I got a feeling about those Atlanta Braves and I think maybe you share that sentiment I I love the energy of that ballclub and a tremendous young players out at first base I'm going to go with Houston getting back there but against the Atlanta Braves great series they're tuning out the Red Sox season ticket plans provide fans with the best seat locations price and benefits such as early entry into Fenway Park and much more season ticket plans start with 10 games for more info call 877 Red Sox 9 or visit Red Sox comm / season tickets mitch moreland coming off the bench to get a mini rally going Red Sox get another run deleted 2 to nothing kiermaier leading things off here against yasin at a bottom half of the third Tampa Bay without a hit yet so you're with me on the Atlanta Braves you've gotten very fond of Atlanta because they've wrapped up the National League East they have 96 wins swung on and missed he put him away that strike three care Meyer down happy I'm definitely with you think that the dynamic of their team between their office their defense their young talent the energy level their brains I started pitching staff the bullpen I mean it's hard to beat and I mean just going on history alone the Dodgers just I've never been able just like the Nationals never been able to just put it together for a full season they always just kind of I guess joke in a sense and I think Houston yeah they're just they're just loaded with offense and their bullpen their starting rotation it's ridiculous hundred two wins Alex Cora was talking about him again yesterday the things they continue to do so well like they make great contact they don't strike out don't strike out with men on base they put the ball and play obviously a very talented team a lot of homerun hitters and a lot of terrific gifts and a great pitching staff but he keeps looking back at the Houston Astros insane you know they changed so effectively with the times it's one of the reasons they have kind of a mini dynasty you know they really do they adapt really well and I mean you're talking about a playoff team you gotta have one two three obviously starting pitching but then you're four and five guys they can go to the bullpen we're really a number one on any other team I mean that's that's pretty powerful to have was to be a true dynasty you have to win more than one championship you've got to put a couple together or win up a number of them over a three or four or five year period ten you through whatever and they still have that to do but that is an incredibly confident team when you're a team come into play them you know you're not looking at the true definition of dynasty you're just looking at those guys saying man I got to try and get through these guys and if I don't score some runs I got bulton to go up against you know it's a definite play some mind trick something top two guys in a rotation probably both gonna have three hundred strikeouts one and two I'm gonna say young learning as far as I'm concerned with numbers bounding ball behind the back foul off the bat of Willie Adamas joy Wendell on deck Jarrod Saltalamacchia with us tonight and will be the next few nights Jerry Remy a little bit of a stomach bug will be okay to join us we're sure about that when the Red Sox take on the Baltimore Orioles the last home series last series of the season next weekend three two and in there the striking out bottom looking back to bat caves by 15 secedes has been you know really just kind of going all out really using this fastball that slider still missed on an arm side but it's been effective when they say the toughest pitch to hit baseball is the backup slider he's thrown some backup slider tonight but it's been effective against the team that's really kind of taken out our approach they're really aggressive early and it gets a guy who's throwing a lot off-speed pitch you don't typically see that top of the order and Wendell who struck out for his time up goes after the first pitch a bounding ball to Hernandez and another pretty quick inning for Uli's JA seen they go 1 2 3 and we'll get back to doing that for Red Sox baseball Sox coming up with a 2 nothing lead about hit Tampa Bay for nothing Chris Owings took the walk first trip they'll rattle that one a joy one up and one down those baseman unassisted [Music] maybe we didn't get the memo this was the last game of spring training feels like that the guys swing it very early in early and often often times that happens on the last day of the season we have two clubs that are eliminated going noplace and those last games can really fly by because of that sandy old Fulani is popped out to the catcher and they looked at a strike Marco Hernandez on deck Sandy's doing a great job than I was she seen he hasn't taught him too often guy that's got multiple pitches but he's been able to get him through the innings pretty quick mix it all pitches it's already four pitchers in the game for Tampa Bay this is Austin Pruitt he's made a couple of starts CRA 411 and soon he gets a piece fouls it away you're very fortunate in this regard salty and coming in and helping out the way you did so graciously with Jerry Remy out with the stomach issue that's gonna be in there for strike three sandy not thrilled with a call but they'll take a seat to down the copy the true reading is not covered in coffee that somebody's built like every piece that I read yesterday I'm just gonna tell you that you're really not sure what you're reading entirely get spilled on coffee everywhere and you know who's responsible for that she's hiding right now Anita stage manager there she is there's Anita well like a true professional yeah we overcome it we overcome but I'm glad that all your copy is clean and clear and easy to read for the most part that's a misspelling that I've had to kind of fight battle feels around yeah but whoever was responsible for that will go unnamed not only on the plane he won't well that's the time to get it done I fly foul out of play by Hernandez who struck out and doubled I'm being told it was it was a plan there's a test just to see how good you were and you passed with flying colors so well thankfully they got the audio books now so I'm really taking advantage of that but all right I got overcome things and being tested every day with being a pro is all about wanted to and they're really hitting me with the reeds right when we come back so I really have to be quick oh yeah it's kind of helpful there's no letter and starts heading on for Texas Eduardo Rodriguez is going after win number 19 tomorrow Alex Boras talked about giving him that opportunity to bid for 20 and that's great because he has had a phenomenal year he's been that guy in the rotation that's been as consistent as anybody and to give him that opportunity and you can't can't think the Red Sox enough for what he's done he has earned it got goes to 3 & 2 Mookie Betts on deck insects have all the hits in the game all for them and that will miss for ball four so Marco Hernandez in a leadoff spot tonight has been on a couple of times he's done everything you would ask a leadoff guy he's seen a lot of pitches you know with the exception or the first about the second about he worked a great a great count you never get an RBI double got it back there you walk and he gets a walk you need two guys get on base in front of Mookie let him do some damage Mookie with a walk a theft of second he's also popped out fouled at first check the swanky takes ball one that's 14 games he's hit seven home runs they get up to 28 and he reached 30 he's running out of games right through the shift on that left side for a base hit Hernandez almost took a tumble there as he rounded second base able to stay up on his feed Mookie with a single and they're on at first and third basically I like Pruitt that makes his living off that cutter slider they got the shift on him he hits it right through the shift marker did a great job not slowing down even though he almost fell he still was able to get the third base I almost look like catch your athletic that turn right there [Music] Schneider out for the third time already and a Red Sox pressing the matter with runners at 1st and 3rd for Rafael Debra's rafi tonight as struck out flied out over to he's had a pretty quiet series other than the one home Ryan he is 2 for 16 well they're ready focused right now it's just stop the bleeding try and keep it as close as possible their offenses really just can't figure out you see and they're over there swinging and everything if they're hoping they can get to the bullpen and maybe do some damage in there I told you that Joey had a great sense of humor he's got everybody laughing over there else watching take VP before the game he got in there writing it took six swings right hand and hit two off the wall container goes man we're having trouble getting him out for left handed we don't need a bet riding those teammates love them so two men aboard for Raphael sitting there with 112 runs batted in in his 31st home run of the season Saturday here setting a Red Sox record for the most by third baseman record previously held by butch hobson in 1970 70 at 30 I don't know who was that season the next season might have in the next season we're butch hobson he had bone chips in his elbow so he would have to move them around to manipulate the elbow so he could Thrall it's the old school way of just having the trainer spit on it rub it pretty much enough goodness JD Martinez on deck I expect Mookie to stay put kind of keep that hole open at first base for the left-handed Devers and brutal misfire two and one do you ever deal with anything like that some bone spurs just kind of move them around so you can write well you know for a broadcaster about the roughest it gets is I gotta clear my throat everyone but man that don't don't undersell that salty because that can be gruesome you ain't kiddin it's a long season for you guys as well and I say you guys because I'm part time glad you're here today that one flick file out of play and will be first couple of games of the Texas series as well and Todd Walker is gonna parachute in for one game maybe literally literally because he is a pilot by the way is he really yes is he flying over or is he driving alright I understand he's actually driving he's staying on the ground for this one but Todd has a pilot's license they lead away from first and third two to two Rafi when it takes off at first and he has to jump over that Mookie got clear of it the run is in and bets down to third and Raphael Devers drives in his 113th run Red Sox are really making a tough these last two days against these Tampa Bay Rays it's Reena up the lead after beating in yesterday afternoon you really just see the Red Sox focus so much on these at-bats they're not taking anything for granted they're not swinging at pitches out of the zone see Devers getting a pitch out over the middle of the plate Mookie does a great job jumping over at getting find a way to get to third the Red Sox hitters are really locked in now they can push the Tampa Bay Rays a half game out of the wild-card race with a victory that's the best the Red Sox can do tonight because Cleveland is idle JD Martinez would walk in a tapper to short but boy the way these guys have beaten up on the Red Sox this year particularly at Fenway Park Sox would love nothing more than to come out of here with a couple of games in a row against the Rays who were in dire need of victories first and third again JD's sitting on 99 runs batted in trying to make it three consecutive seasons of at least a hundred he's one of those guys we talked about that could be you know take his option and try the the free agent market kind of up to him at this point breaks his bat ground ball up the middle to get through for a base hit that will score Mookie Betts and that's a hundred runs batted and again for JD Martinez and for nothing Boston good for Jimmy I mean he's he puts more time and effort in the cage than anybody in baseball and for him to be able to take that from the cage out to the game make the adjustments he makes and he's so strong broken bat able to find a hole up the middle he's meant a lot for this Red Sox team and I know they wouldn't want to see him leave just enough to get it through seeing eye single with the busted bat and the Red Sox are ahead for zip again first and third for Mitch Moreland Mitch's had one at-bat since entering the ballgame he ripped a double on the third and Jackie Bradley doubled him in no activity in their bullpen you see the Red Sox just playing the game with Marco going first a third Mookie going first as their Devers going first to third yeah that's how you add up scored you win games it's just by playing the game taking the basement you can you know even though they're out of it they're still out there hustling playing every play like you're in a playoff race Mitchell's gonna keep it rolling here he'll lay off the outside pitch to a No that sex had been a pretty reliable road Club all season long with the exception of the first road trip which was a disaster the Red Sox are six than the majors in winning percentage on the road you wouldn't a thunk it after the way the season started it sucks actually began the year 3 and 10 away from Fenway since then they've gone 41 and 23 on the road and that will miss for ball 4 and that's gonna load the bases for Jackie Bradley who's already 2 for 2 it's strange to see the Red Sox play like they do at home this year we talked about starting pitching is a huge key to that no one has the answer is obviously dana has been with those guys I know those guys are working as hard as it can the bull pinch to try and figure things out and nothing to knock against the Red Sox but planning it's the race and I raised look like they're a team that's not fighting for anything yeah don't look dead out there they do it's strange to watch that because they're in a situation where they hold the cards of the future for themselves Red Sox looked like the much hungrier team certainly tonight News Jackie busted bat on a one hopper knocked out by allow the throw on the first close and gato on a bang-bang play just in time Red Sox keep on rolling and they've got a four nothing lead fourth Red Sox up for nothing tip abate does not have a hit against shy scene and Tommy Pham is old for one with a strikeout now it's meadows and d'Arnaud all getting the second look at the veteran right-hander watching the Rays approach tonight it's almost like they're in panic mode they're out there trying to make something out of nothing Justine is taking full advantage of that making his pitches mixing them up you know him and Leone are definitely the same page and they're working really well together one-two punch vowel I'm talking about the fact that the Red Sox have not played well at home you need a win tonight and they will finish the season with a winning record it's be the first year since 1980 the Sox finished with an overall winning record but have a losing record at home they are thirty-seven and forty-one the three games left at Fenway something that absolutely has to be turned around next season to - did he offer yes he did that strike three all night rings him up let's go down to Gareth OB saw the ever since Heath Hembree injured in his elbow he's been experiencing setbacks and for a while it looked like they were going to shut him down however he was activated today and he told us that it's really important for him to finish his season with his team on the mound because he's missed so much of it and he wasn't able to contribute now he told us that he finally feels like himself because after that first I Alston he just kept telling himself if he can throw the ball he'll be ok and we'll make it work but he said now he feels confident that the PRP injection did its job and that this is not going to be a lingering issue guys kick Garin thank you very much Austin Meadows the batter I think that gives the Red Sox 22 pitchers if I'm not mistaken we'll double check that and that would be a record and we've seen them all sometimes in one night it certainly feels that way salty I can tell you've been watching we were in Toronto I think they used nine or ten in one game which I think was another record another busted bat little flair will drop down by Austin Meadows and that's the first hit tonight but a Tampa Bay Rays coming with one out the fourth inning again shy see what every said is so true for a player to be able to finish a season on a healthy note knowing going to the next season is is a huge mental break for those guys see that slider just kind of left up in his own broken bat found a hole she seems job right here is to just try and get a ground ball DoublePlay [Music] we talked about Nate you know what are they building them for it because they're not gonna be in a playoff game but for a player psyche that's just such a huge thing for them to go into an offseason knowing that they don't have to rehab or they don't have to see what's it going to feel like they know what it feels like they finished the season on a strong note ok now I'm gonna go have a normal offseason and get ready for next year [Music] Travis Darnell old for Juan Diaz flied to right only two baserunners in the ballgame against the Sox right-hander Oh - and that one sucked in the right center field for a single Meadows around second heading at a third base we pull up right there back-to-back hits after not having any until this point in the ballgame [Applause] you're starting to see some of those pitches that are mistakes over the middle plate are starting to get put in play finding holes and in this situation guys need to just try and stop the bleeding and as we talked about earlier location is more important than velocity or stuff it's working to locate this pitch to get the out that I need [Music] especially against the Red Sox her raise offense re-raise offense that she's swinging everything that's why location is definitely more important you know they're gonna go ahead and swing at it then I'm gonna go ahead and keep throwing it until they prove that they're not going to swing it then I have to start coming back over the plate joy old for Juan Diaz grounded at first and pointer up in the pen first activity out there this evening [Music] Garcia would be next joy certainly a double play candidate hit a high fly ball into right-center field driven deep Bradley back to the wall and that is gone when that didn't take long for them to get back in the game g-man joy with his 17th up front of the season three-run shot to make it a one-run contest base hit base hit three-run Johnson yeah that's the last thing the Red Sox wanna see is the race starts swinging putting balls in play and then a three-run homer to put them right back into the game [Applause] it's just that slider that stays up wasn't getting a lot of action on Saturday night he was missing kind of backing up that one just stayed up kind of spun stayed flat enjoyed being a big home run hitter then missing number 17 [Applause] that's the slider do you want to throw [Music] Rampal yanked a third endeavor is up and throwing and gets him by half a step for the second out tonight after Red Sox coverage on nested sports today hear from Tom Brady Nestle sports today is presented by People's United fate where the technology is as helpful as the people two men out for Brandon Lau's grounded out to first this one tightened up in a heartbeat allows it 16 home runs [Applause] you aren't kids sometimes it starts with little broken bat single and then another single and then it just once swing away from making it a close game [Music] [Applause] - OH we'll miss outside on the number seven hitter [Applause] in there for a called strike but Samia look like she seems the weight started the game and his pitches were just kind of lift up and backing up on him it's just kind of caught up too you know you knew eventually the Rays hitters we're gonna be able to make the adjustment on pitches over the plate and then we're gonna fight start fighting some holes and put the ball out of the ballpark three-one there's a Heidi drive suck way down the right-field line he crushed that one it is gone is 17 cone rod and in a blink of an eye Tampa Bay has tied the ballgame all even up at poor [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 441 feet to the back wall that's big topic territory she seems just left a fastball and it got it in there okay but when you're missing out over the plate these are aggressive hitters you know they're gonna find the barrel somehow you see low find the barrel they're hitting the home run tied the ball game up pitching change here winder is in we're tied for fourth [Music] it came apart in a hurry because for the first three and a third they didn't touch him did not allow a hit and base hit face hit three run homer ground ball and a mammoth homerun and for Lau came off as bad at 110 miles an hour miss reinstated from the 60-day il because of a couple of different injuries yesterday it his first start since early July yesterday he just knocked one 441 feet Bobby pointer coming out of the bullpen to take on care Meyer brand-new ballgame for for Tampa Bay battling back with power here Myers struck out the third he's over one then pointers been really good for the Red Sox since being called up and especially for a guy that wasn't even supposed to be called up Oliver Drake the right-hander in their bullpen kiermaier yesterday snapped in over twenty-two longest drought of his career he's gonna get drilled by the pitch so he is bored with man to reach base here the fourth innings and we'll send up Willie Adamas the number nine man [Music] you know what Tampa Bay does have they don't have a lot of big boppers but they have pretty consistent power up and down the line oh yeah they have guys that can put it out of the ballpark but their money their bread and butter has been guys that be able to get on base steal some bases find a way to win the one to run games let their pitching staff do what they've done you know and then if they can eventually get some guys on base and that one guy gets a home run that's a huge help and when it comes to playoffs the teams that aren't the three run home run teams are the ones that end up going further in the playoffs I in my opinion no DOM is the eighth man to hit in the inning bat goes flying on a swing and a miss [Applause] clanging into the screen heads up Thomas trying to wake up the Red Sox over their long inning Pakistan's probably happened maybe once in my career most impressive was Josh Hamilton he would think it brought throw the bat out of the stadium it seemed like every game he had that happen at least once every game he also had the single best game I ever saw a major leaguer have Baltimore it's a formal run game now one that one although that was pretty impressive to come to think of it there's a game where he also made a couple of great defensive plays he threw somebody out at second base stole two bases hit for power I mean just sort of sat back and went home my goodness it's it's really scared to see what he could have done if he would have been healthy and didn't go through the troubles that he went through early in his career sure you're just watching him Nelson Cruz take VP every day was just they just brought show remember his home run derby at Yankee Stadium two down a runner at first tell you what another guy I can remember who had one of the great individual games I ever witnessed was GP drew before he ever gotten to the Red Sox's remember the st. Louis Cardinals and it was much the same was like home run triple threw somebody out at home played stole two bases stole second if it's stuff like that you're like right but what can he do you know when motivated JD made playing baseball look very easy they really did a terribly difficult game this one deep to left field forget about it it is gone [Music] and Tampa Bay is in front six to four on another monster shot number 24 Adamas heads their third home run in the inning they have turned it around just like that they might have been doing so ugly that the first hit he's given up since he's been up here and you know you talked about how dead the Rays looked and they just looked like they were out of it and we're leaving a playoff to him and then a couple hits here and there and a home run and they're holding football team well they woke up they were absolutely dead in the water until this inning but they have woken up with a vengeance and lead it's six to four think about it they had one base runner in the first three and a third and that was on ball four the Red Sox had piled up a four to nothing lead but here come the Rays that's why it's so important when you've got a lead on a team especially a four-run lead or more you're gonna step on their necks you gotta make sure that they don't get any kind of momentum going you know now all of a sudden it's like you're playing a playoff team that you know you can't miss it's it's that's why baseball's frustrating and fun at the same time than any point the team could put on some runs like that it's a whole different ballgame home runs by joy Wow and adamas and they have flipped it deleted six to four Wendell the ninth man to hit for them induce inning and he will strike out looking but not before they get six lunge to take a two-run lead he's like Louie Tia Mike Timlin trot Nixon and boy for more info go to Red Sox calm slash fantasy camp protocol six one seven two two six six four zero zero in Tampa Bay quickly going from flat two in front six to four top half of the fifth inning no bring on Oliver Drake where's the unusual delivery in there for strike on Gorky's Hernandez Ray's just banged out three home runs in the fourth inning gorky's over to he's flied out grounded out mid sacks have already seen Drake twice in the series on Saturday in on Friday Friday go strike out a ground out to end the seventh-inning raise winning the first two games of the series Red Sox came back won on Sunday and had a four nothing lead in this one yeah definitely didn't see that coming the Rays woke up started with a broken bat single and another single that a home run and without within a minute they got a two-run lead Sox gotta just take it one pitch at a time keep doing what they do the first three or four innings just take their hits take the extra base score some runs Victor Velazquez loosening in the Sox pen rope of the foul ball down into that pan drinks got the real funky delivery and a lot of times you just kind of take away the funky deliveries don't look at his motion don't look at his legs he's got a lot of body going and you just focus on the pill of his captain and as you look at the booze cab as soon as he starts his wine it was delivered then he could move over to his arm sometimes they look like they're throwing harder they really are so you got to kind of slow the game down and not try and do too much did the offer yes he did strike three working soon and his fans were stout v penny it's up it didn't thank you it but as you slow it down I don't think he went by definition the attempt to swing is saying that you went but I feel like everybody has an intent to swing so I've always been always be curious about that because notice you can get in the mind of the hitter to determine his intent right it's the umpire it's his opinion obviously in the end when it's filled like that I used to thinking is if it broke the plane but if you look at the definition it's the intent to swing and you know I know I didn't have very many at-bats where I didn't have the intent to so as I wouldn't go up to the plate I was particularly happy one night in October 2013 when you elected to swing the bat then won a huge game for the Red Sox in the ALCS okay I still replay that in my mind because the first I think the first pitch I was asked to hit and run I'm ever popping it up and Prince Fielder runs over and I don't know what happened but thankfully he missed the ball yeah then Johnny goes is able to get to second and he got the third on a pass ball and then our old teammate over at shortstop Iglesias didn't feel any better to get a hit off him and I let him doing that every day in 2016 when I played with him in Detroit cuz they're actually two had that poppy but I was just I was like you ladies at a generous mood they've had particular ball but I don't think so one of the great wins in Red Sox history it was the night that David Ortiz hit the grand slam against the Tigers and salty would win the ballgame later with that base hit only use will take one up and in he has walked and grounded out tonight I had to hear about that all year in 16 Verlander was so upset because he's like Scherzer should have finished that game he had plenty left but he took himself out of the game and then we had to have the bullpen come in which was their weak spot especially gets David Ortiz and we've talked about it at length again about that and how anybody pitched them in the ALCS or the World Series and that kid in swine on this strike three back-to-back KS and he Lyon coming up all of a sudden a lot of light with the Tampa Bay Rays it really looked like a whole different team tomorrow at 7:00 don't miss Red Sox 1st pitch presented by Joseph Abboud the Bill of a Men's Wearhouse TC Jim and Lenny will break down the Red Sox all millennium team at D H and we know who's gonna win yeah I'm not even sure why we're even doing that at this point but it's part of the exercise sandy has popped up and struck out over 2 the starter Blake's now five pitchers in the ballgame all ready for Tampa Bay snow when only an inning and two thirds he didn't have it tonight they have recovered we really didn't just talking about his outing his pace was really slow he wasn't able to find the strike zone he's up in his own and I mean that's got to be a reason why a raise defense looks dead out there and they are just up there swinging the bass they're tired you know you put a new pitcher in who works faster works quicker and all of a sudden you got a whole new team one to even up the count Marco Hernandez on deck where's the Red Sox have been eliminated for some time now from postseason contention none of the last 19 World Series winners have repeated as champions the following year so tough to do two gone and two to home rolls that one up the middle for a Damas behind a bag that's a strong order phileas oil change service you can see experts who can trust and by Citizens Bank you're made ready and soul weed 6to4 a Tampa Bay in the bottom half of the fifth inning on what is a beautiful night outside the indoor has been very very interesting Shah scene was very sharp for three innings or so but then fell apart after that viraja home runs Blake Snell the starter for Tampa Bay he's not sharp at all in an inning and two thirds but they have come storming back to take his 6-4 lead and a Hector Velasquez out of the bullpen taking on Tommy Pham was whiffed two times so Hector the third man to pitch the Sox tonight and sky-high popped to right that's striking over the line time to get there makes the play in foul ground one away State Street pavilion club memberships include exclusive access to a climate-controlled Club space in seat waiter hear it glad you made it we all are thank you very much well I appreciate couldn't pass up the opportunity to work with you and you're such a sweetheart Jerry remedy with a stomach bug but should be just fine and ready to go next weekend when the Red Sox would be home for the last three games of the regular season Remy's got me one of the toughest broadcasters in the game by far toughest people now those with a walk in a single this guy's really an emerging star 32 home runs hitting near 300 he's driven in 88 and really the most dangerous hitter in their lineup really he's a complete hitter he uses the other side the field he's got the home runs on different teams he may be a guy that could you know put on over 100 RBIs playing on a team where the offense isn't huge but he fits it quite nicely in that 3 hole has done a great job for the Rays grew up in Atlanta rooting for all the Atlanta sports teams especially the Braves he calls Chipper Jones his favorite player tip who was the second favored right I was number one I did I missed that in the bio like sorry so I was there for a month at half Sonny [Music] comes from an athletic family is dad play baseball and football at Morehead State his mom was a softball star at Georgia Southern count of one ball in two strikes on meadows got a piece to hang in so what are which pair it takes credit for his hitting I would bet I bet they both do you know a lot of the times you know this is true the moms who played sports you play softball or a lot of different sports you know they're the ones oftentimes who are great teachers at home with the kids they do a lot of the stuff with you they're the ones that get a lot of credit later by major league ball players I would agree with that I know that my dad made both my parents made huge sacrifices damn job and here's Moreland a scoop and get him to go on cheap sacrifices to get me where I'm at but coach me up until I was probably 11 or 12 years old she was my coach every year and she drafted well is what it really was she did until this day she would take I don't want to make you upset but when you keep your eye on the ball you seem to hit that like what you know I made a career of closing my eyes and swing as hard as I can so that can't be true and everything moms deserve the lion's share of the credit for so many of the success stories to see a major league baseball Travis d'Arnaud is single these also grounded out Alaska's will not him up six-two for Tampa Bay I have to say my mom definitely played a huge role my dad he was a firefighter/paramedic he had a few heart attacks so he ended up staying home with me a lot getting me to the practices and making sure there's food on the table every night so I owe a lot to him his work it's often the first message that major-leaguer will have after the game to be sent out you know via text or whatever it's to dad you know talking about the attack and the third inning you know what kind of night he had at the plate yeah it was definitely my dad kind of stood clear for that my mom was more vocal when it came to that me and my dad would butt heads a lot on that stuff cuz last thing I want to talk about after a game was was baseball you know wanted to go home be with my wife be with my kids don't talk about anyone think about baseball so to get that text message was frustrating at times but I knew it came from a good place and I knew that he was only just trying to help me you know further my career you're a professional athlete who occasionally butted heads with your father wow that's amazing I feel back he did take a brunt of a lot of my aggression that I had after certain games come on in to strike three in a good inning for Velasquez he puts him down 1 2 3 they live presented by BECU TC Jim and Steve will preview the Red Sox last road series of the seats against the Rangers DCU digital federal crazy what can PC you meet you yeah a whole lot of laughs coming up and the Sox season here they're down six to four as we go the top of the sixth inning Marco Hernandez pretty good night at the plate so far with an RBI double a walk and a run then it'll be Betts endeavors Mookie not the leadoff spot tonight and the Red Sox just got to find a way to get things started get that man on base gonna do what they did the first three innings just moving guys over finding a way to get on take that extra base you know picking peck take one run out of time [Music] and Drake with a tool run swing by Marco there see drink going three changeups in a row that one Oh change up it's probably close to being a strike lift it up a little bit typically you don't try and throw three in a row get the timing down got away with one there and the to wine slap to the right side while we'll have to fire it on Allah get a nice job of it go away [Music] you send a bulky one for to a single and a run continues to lead to major leagues and run scored 133 now most of his career and the boast by Red Sox since Ted Williams scored 150 runs in 1949 we throw around some of those individual achievements that just had odds with what the Red Sox record is in so many ways looped into Center kiermaier sliding play he executed that as well as anybody in the game that sliding catch like that he works out during batting practice you see him out there and it looks like a little kid on a little league team just playing around in the outfield but he's getting his worked in he comes in on the ball better than anybody in baseball a lot outfielders depending on their comfort level Adam Jones is a guy that likes to play shallow because he feels more comfortable running back kiermaier is a guy that likes to run forward she see him make that play almost every time do down for Rafael was 1 for 3 with an RBI single he's 113 thronged riveted [Applause] got a text from your friend in mind the great Jonny Gomes says he misses you by the way oh I miss him I wish he was closer but I know that he's off battling the world's problems and riding bulls he's battling and he's winning is that everything he does behind the back up with his Choi and the Sox are going order on seven pitches [Music] Boston on Duncan Dave O'Brien long said jarrod saltalamacchia Garin Austin on a field as well Red Sox are down six to four to the bottom of the sixth and G may enjoy partly responsible for that with a mammoth three-run homer in the fourth inning one of three home runs they hit in that frame to chase Gesine nick anderson right-hander fired away in their pen for Troy his 17th home run speaking of Johnny Gomes and X players that are winning it life Ryan Dempster gave me a call the other day and I guess he's doing a off the mound late night talk show now ah so he sent me the link to look it out I mean it's just epic of course and I guess next week he's got Johnny Gomes coming it was wondering if I was in town to be able to do it and get some X players and just have fun with it and I was at my kids school football game and we were leaving the park and I'm in a dark car and all of a sudden I get a FaceTime what is this Dempster FaceTime in the middle of night but okay so I answered you came and see me and he's in the middle of his talk show and there was a I guess a segment where they do boys or not and basically he would FaceTime his Call list and if you answer it you're a boy I see so one of the boys thank you the boys I answer I'm never gonna not answer a call from one of my guys no line drive base hit now they keep on rolling the warning track up against the fence joy in the second base he's gonna reach you so slide in with a double so that goes along with his three run shot before thinning just another off-speed pitch left up in his own hit right through the shift it's really nobody had a chance to get to that ball Mookie had a little trouble getting it in but showing that the speediest guy in the world kept him to a double you know I would have bet money I'm not a betting man but I would have bet money when Ryan Dempster pitching career was over eventually who would have his own talk show what made you think that I said yeah it's a layup accident you know it really is I mean that man can do anything his knowledge of the game his demeanor the way he talks you know he's led a very interesting life in and around baseball he's a really interesting guy I could see why he could definitely wind up with a talk show and you should be on it Oh without a doubt Guerra CEO for two he's grounded to short and a third there's no question about that neither obviously you know I'm winning it life as well I've got four great kids beautiful wife you're going back to school to trying definitely trying you're cracking the books and going back to school which i think is impressive as all get-out I figured life's not difficult enough it's not busy enough why not add one more thing for the pile and for girls and now's here's the old one good for you I mean that is not and not an easy thing to do when you've been out of the classroom for a long time it's tough I mean in the toughest part no shocker to anybody's the reading you got to read a lot my plan originally was to go to school with my girls cuz they said hey I'm going to Florida State and I'm like art perfect I'll go to school with you and they stopped that right away so thrilled to hear that I figured all right well then that plans done I'm gonna go ahead and get it done now there you go [Music] ball and two strikes with a runner at second a six two for Tampa Bay lead it sucks not to say they had it in hand but they had a four nothing lead going to the bottom of the fourth inning and that's when it blew up with the three home runs for Tampa Bay Wow one of those joy with another Willie Adamas hit one deeper than anybody big league hitters are going to take advantage of pitches over the middle to plate eventually you only get away with it for so long and she seen was really just kind of playing with fire early in the game but was able to get some some bad swings and quick outs and it just kind of caught up to him a second time through the lineup yeah probably surprising it took as long as it did this is a shot pass first way down the line I will bring in another one Troy is in the store go see it digging for third here's the long long throw and a tag and he is out at third Mookie Betts guns him down the long distance heave to nail him at third base run does come in to make it seven to four what a Chuck fly book a tough tough throw to be able to throw it in the air all the way and to be accurate like he was endeavours doing a great job just letting it come to him almost playing possum with him saying hey I'm not catching the ball and then he catches it makes a great tag on him great play all together since this is from the warning track he threw a mile Mookie does 30 but as he gets himself in a position to make that throw he knew was coming off the wall he played it perfectly and a great throw goodness his 10th outfield assist of the season but that's number one on the list I guarantee you that the unfortunate part of it it doesn't come during a playoff chase for the Red Sox but that's a magnificent throng but to me that means more than in a playoff race because they're not playing for anything they're just playing the game of baseball right now so for him to make that play he's saying okay I'm gonna be a good team I helped my players out my team and I'm still gonna respect the game play the game the way it's supposed to be played you know that's coming from a guy making over 20 million dollars he could easily dogged it and just kind of yeah I'm gonna go cash it in I guess the other way looking at is guy who's you know in in that elite status you want to see him always making plays like that and he does yeah but Justin that's the best throw I've ever seen him make that was Jose Guillen style Vladimir Guerrero spectacular his Garcia went for three and was cut down from the warning track look at Mookie's reaction I just did just happen you know stuff happens to me that's just good things I woke up and yeah so one man away run does score on what goes into the books as a double for a guy's SIA to make it seven to four Wow with a solo home run in the fourth inning and a swing and a Miss that one ate him up inside struck him out so two gone [Music] very active bullpen out there Valon poche and calls soul sir side-by-side he's the word push a head to the bench and who's kiermaier was struck out and been hit by a pitch you just don't see even at the major-league level more than a couple of times a year a throw like that from the warning track into third base and just on the money this isn't a small Paul part where it's an easy throw I mean that's a tough throw to make and salty if he had gotten them by bouncing at once I would have said still a great throw it's an amazing play that was on on the line in the air the right-field used to be known for the position that's the guy you put out there that's got the best arm in over the years it's kind of evolved into a just offensive you can hit the ball I'm gonna throw you out there in the outfield somewhere we don't really care what you bring to the table defensively but Mookie's that guy that's why he's so valuable he not only brings it to the table at the plate but he plays at defense on the bases I mean he's just an all-around 300 RBI type player when I say 300 guys he's gonna save you hundreds gonna hit 100 RBIs he's gonna score hundred our guys bunted foul here by care Myer one ball and two strikes so he gets back inside the dugout and guys start talking with me what's the first thing you'd say well the first thing I do is like grab his arm and make sure it's still attached because that is a tough long throw but I mean that's just that's the play right there they can kind of turn your team around right there you saw the Rays figuring out get some hits and the homerun to bring him back to the game and it kind of woke him up now play right there could wake the Red Sox up and bring them back into this game to ensue give me another angle on this he plays this ball perfectly off the wall gets rid of it in a hurry and still makes a strike to third base Garcia's press still wondering what happened bet he is [Music] - to the appeal no swing on a full count and kiermaier seven runs seven hits now for Tampa Bay they were hitless until one out the fourth they have done all the scoring since then I get six runs and a fourth inning they've added another in this frame [Music] pay up fly down the left-field line Hernandez the long run so does Deborah as Deborah's went for and came close and right into the Red Sox bullpen David a good effort it's not love to see these these type of plays where you talk about the Red Sox not being in it but these guys are still going hard every single play these games mean something to him even though they're not fighting for a playoff spot their teammates are still out there grinding away and battling so they're gonna do the same for their teammates Alaska is waiting for him to set up again at the shortstop spot in the shift 3 to again high fly ball into right field that hangs up for Mookie and will make the catch after a spectacular throw in the inning a game to play third base for Tampa Bay that'll move Wendell over to second and a new pitcher will be Nick Anderson right-hander one Saturday gave up a game-tying two-run homer to rappy Jeffers in the 8th inning as he blew the save and he's the sixth man to work on the hill tonight for Kevin cash and Heath Hembree who has just been activated again after a long stay on the injured list went on on August the 2nd with inflammation in the elbow he is up in the pen Jadey Martinez who tonight is driven in his 100th run of the year that was a single in the fourth inning will lead it off see if that fantastic play by mukki wakes the Red Sox up a little bit make this game a little bit closer just a sensational thrall to nail Garcia at third going for a triple better be careful they see might say hey let's bring that over to the mound and see what you got now with some Chuck from the warning track mitch moreland on deck and the tool Tampa Bay wins the ballgame they'll have a half game lead over the idle Indians going into play tomorrow for the second wild-card with Oakland still on top for the number one spot two wild-card teams qualify from each league to one tip of a really kind of holds the cars himself a they can really decide their own destination they're going up against the Yankee's team who's hurting right now and we're probably setting up the rotation for the playoffs and they got Toronto a young team some young pitchers Cleveland's got the White Sox and they go up against the Nationals who were fighting for that playoff spot as well too to fought off foul in Washington and Milwaukee are tied for the wild-card up for games over the Cubs right now certainly looking like it's gonna be Washington and Milwaukee in some order 1 or 2 for that wild-card Cubs really playing badly at the exact wrong time for them they've lost 6 consecutive games that's that's surprising to see and that's another team to watch this off see to see what they do with Steve Madden who's been you know one of those managers it's really kind of turned that team around this has been talk about Joe Maddon all season long really because of you know the high paycheck in 6 million I think it is managers salaries are going the other way pretty dramatically over the last couple of years for example even the Marlins they extended Don Mattingly but they cut his pay yeah kind of pretty significant and a lot of people were starting to write talk about Madden you know are the results they're enough he did win a World Series and everyone in Chicago will love him for the end of time for that right the players that he's got on that team I mean you know they spent some money they've gotten the players that they thought would be the team to to be able to repeat a World Series and be in the playoffs every season and Joe has done a great job with that team but this year that last month of the season have kind of fell off guys really struggled lately has been Craig Kimbrel which was a piece that they bought and gave him four years for it to to solidify that moment he did indeed ninth pitch of the at-bat coming up here for JD [Music] Minnesota Twins with a four-game lead on the Indians they certainly looked like they're in great shape to wrap up that division the central they've won 96 games took Milwaukee surprised me too they lost Yelich you would think that that's the end of their season sure is they've had a great month of September we were eight month I think there's sixteen and two or something let's go down to Garin ok Southie when I was talking with Mitch Moreland about this season he said they got off to a tough start they never really went on that front because every time they would take one step forward they would take two steps back but he said it's important for them to finish the season strong they are not going to quit but he doesn't have to worry about that with this group now when I asked Moreland about next season he said he will start thinking about that when this one is done but he did say this group wants to enjoy their time together because it could be the last few days and guys before the game Alex Cora was telling us that for the past few years that Moreland has been here he's been a very important leader in that Clubhouse on an idea is double and scored he's also taken ball four did not start tonight Sam Travis did it's so true I said it's so frustrating when you think start to turn around you're like okay here we go guys and then all of a sudden you lose two or three and you know you kind of lose that momentum and I mean that's just so important that everyone talked about last year how easy it was for them it's not easy there were some tough times they just everything seemed to go right for the Red Sox so they were able to you know minimize the damage this year's been the opposite and I could take a mental toll on those guys as well well he certainly did make it look easy winning a hundred eight games during the regular season no question about that I think that's a compliment when you make you the toughest game I think here is to play when you make it look that easy I mean you're a great ballclub without a doubt the only thing that's easy about that is shuttle to the ballpark every day when you're winning it's so easy to show up and say you know what no worries we're gonna win tomorrow and 13 that's what it was we were just say just hit the play button we're got we got this no big deal let's just show up to the park we ready to play see an odd shift out they got four outfielders now four outfielders being used this is typical of Tampa Bay when Madden was here we've seen cash to it from time to time and nobody at all on the left side of the infield that's what would say oh don't worry about just hit a ground ball to short hit a ground ball to third it's so easy to say but it's not easy to do well he's had shifts not this dramatic perhaps not before outfielders bees had shifts like this for a long time where they've you know dared him to hit it to the left side so much so that I remember two spring trainings ago he said yeah I'm gonna start to drop down a bunt every once in a while when they do that he hasn't done it yet but this would be a perfect time to do it it really was and they didn't start this big of a shift in the first few pitches you know once they got the two strikes then they became a little bit more aggressive with the shift but you know David Ortiz is a guy that I was talked to because they shifted me a lot what do you think it was like I'm not trying to hit a ground ball in a second we hit a ground ball to short I'm trying to hit it through the ship and his swinging a Miss for strike three so two down don't miss WB Mason decorating live right after the game TC Steve and Lenny will break down the game and you'll hear from Alex Cora who but WB Mason Jackie Bradley Jackie with two hits tonight a single and an RBI double he has gone two for three Red Sox down seven to four in the seventh remember a few years ago the Dodgers were playing against the Padres and was late in the season put playoff push close game they ended up putting four infielders on the right side of the infield so I can understand a shift like that whenever it's a close game but 74 you got the momentum going putting four outfielders out there to me just doesn't make a lot of sense unless you're trying to cut down that double going up by three where you really need to you're just trying to make the pitch and get out of the inning sometimes they overthink all into [Applause] [Music] Gorky's Hernandez next [Applause] and the 1/2 from Anderson and in his centerfield for a base hit so Jackie continues to swing a good one tonight that's his third hit he's 3 for 4 it really looks good he's not trying to do too much he had a one second too bad he had a little breaking ball that went down and was able to smoke it to right but and that he's stint in the middle of the ballpark not trying to do too much put a one handed single to center so we'll get the inning to gorky's Hernandez who's over three that's active out hit Tampa Bay so far 8 to 7 but they trailed by three runs but a man at first against Nick Anderson in there strike one Zack's are headed for Texas tonight and three games against the Rangers the last three they'll play in that ballpark as the Rangers of brand new ballpark next year have you seen any of the pictures of the new part I have it looks looks tremendous didn't spare any expense no they certainly didn't on the Cowboys Stadium no and that was given I think the new stay is being built pretty much right next to it and they're gonna guess make the old Raider Stadium into a parking lot no park it's been an issue over there but putting it dome over that is the smartest decision you ain't lyin you know that firsthand huh O'Shea along with Castillo in their pen [Applause] a neo to just hope it has great air-conditioning I can't imagine it would anything's better than 126 degree heat on the field remember guys like Beckett first time I've ever seen it he actually warmed up for a game and he's from Texas inside the clubhouse in the batting cages they had a mound in the batting cage and that's where he did his warmup pitches to get ready for a game just stay on the heat you really do have to manage the heat places like that Arizona and Florida two strike pitch to gorky's Hernandez and a tapper to 3rd charging on that Robertson and I'll get him one man left and see if Thomas here with a two-run homer to put the Rays up by two really got all of that fastball put their team ahead back to we had just been talking about the fact that you know they've got one real Bopper in the lineup in Austin Meadows 32 home runs and then a bunch of guys hitting like you know 16 17 18 19 home runs Dan Adamas was a guy that in triple-a kind of all-or-nothing guy he was a high expectation I remember facing them and you know you can really get some aggressive swings and some bad pitches but if you missed over the plate and he made you pay Heath Hembree to make an appearance just reinstated today from the injured list you went on the I L on the second of August with inflammation in that right elbow his last major league appearance was on August the 1st against Tampa Bay four in 104 20 and run average in 67 appearances and this really designed to see how he looks at the tail end of the season built some confidence in that elbow and go out on an uptick yeah this is a big outing for him for so many different reasons but one is as you said to make sure he's healthy make sure you can go and finish the season on a good note know that he's going to go into the offseason with a normal routine a normal offseason and I think there's plenty of curiosity about that certainly by Heath himself they talked about workmen and his roles on this team since he got caught up in 13 as a relief long relief than a starter than a bullpen seventh-inning guy they're going into spring training there was question on where he was gonna beat where was he gonna fit in the seventh inning spot I don't think anyone thought he was gonna be the closer by the end of the year but he's done exactly that done an unbelievable job at you just can't hit him talking about working right just can't hit him he's getting one home run this year one home run and none to the last what two hundred eight hitters he's faced that's to his credit cuz he's not a typical closer where he's throwing gas and he's just gonna blow you away and then have a two pitch he's got a three pitch mix he throws a four seam fast ball cutter slider he's got that big curve ball to come off of all those pitches I don't know if he's gonna be the closer for the Red Sox next season or not he might be but whatever role he occupies it could be a very valuable guy nine and one an ER a of 194 well no matter what he's gonna be a big piece of this bullpen for a long time because he is a guy that you could put in any role and he's going to have some success he's figure some stuff out dish he's had some injuries in the past but he's figure some stuff out about himself this year that's made him so successful but 127 batting average against them to to to Adamas the center field Jackie that was off the end of the bat they don't make the catch time now for a game break brought to you by Jordans the furniture store the Red Sox just top Karen [Music] Wow man you take you take a walk outside our hotel here and the binoy beautiful hotel when the Red Sox are and it's 88 degrees today last thing on your mind is hockey but so close seeing the bees back on the ice it came quick did you shoot off season for those guys they went deep into the playoffs and I thought firstly that they were gonna pull it out yeah Game seven no question we had such high hopes but a great run right back at it Joey Wendell is old for three struck out two times Tampa Bay with seven four lead in the seventh inning heck college basketball season is not that far away salty I know you're a big college basketball fan I I just I don't know I just never got into it I'm gonna get you in on some college hoops I'm gonna bring you down to a game at Cameron Indoor Duke or Chapel Hill North Carolina and I bet you fall in love with it Hernandez will scoop that and get him to down is because you love sports you love all sports gotta get you down to college basketball pipeline for Europe your big college football and pro football fan your FSU team is scuffle and your your opinionated about it I love that about you you're like your view Seminoles or you do this a lot when you talk about someone I'm struggling this year whenever a team that's you know had the dynasty they have are starting to talk about well we almost won that bothers me right I'm not an almost win type of guy I expect to win and I want those guys that expect to win too and I just don't think Taggarts done a great job with those guys and holding them accountable and holding on to a higher level that they've always been accustomed to so you and you know that's the game I have this weekend like I got your Seminoles against NC State so I'm like I'll bring you back a full report please do please let me know what's going on because it's been tough to watch and my wife's a gator fan so I got to hear that side of things as well you get an interesting household oh my gosh comes to college football season the worst he's just converted my my oldest well this has been a Florida State fan with me and we were gonna go to school together and you know you know right off into the sunset and that's kind of and you and you have been cheering for the Dolphins but now you're a converted Pats fan yeah I'm a Pat's man I am I never was a guy that kind of changed teams like that but you know dolphins have done stuff that I'm not happy by the way it's pretty good move you know if you get a change you know well if you get a flip flip to the Patriots flip to the team that hasn't allowed a touchdown it looks like they may very well go undefeated again I'm still hoping Belichick calls the framing as a tight end I mean I know they don't need it now but if anybody can make me look at I'm sure Tom Brady could bet he could do a few things you've got good hands man we'll take one downstairs he has struck out two times and also flied to right would Meadows on deck well Heath has gotten the first two men on the fly out on a groundout and his return to the hill I'm trying to make it a 1-2-3 inning he looks good he's been letting the ball go I haven't seen too much from him as he's trying to hinder away from any type of pitch he's throwing all his pitches velocities there he's now 30 years old from Spartanburg South Carolina and the 3-2 flied to right on the move Betts Mookie to the corner trying to run it down and he will and to balance himself on the barrier but he makes the catch and they go 1-2-3 the Children's Hospital run you can stop in a quench your thirst with a 44 ounce fountain of speedy freeze drink just 89 cents top half of the eighth inning Tampa Bay seven Red Sox four here's the seventh pitcher of the night for the Rays this is Diego Castillo the right-hander on Saturday gave up that go-ahead solo home run to Mitch Moreland in the eleventh inning but he got the win have been eight lows walk-off two-run Homer fortunate to get it five and eight at 3:46 earned-run average they have used him to close his eight saves Chris Owings / - of the Walker Xander Bogaerts resting tonight Castillo's got that electric stuff that heavy sinker you know throws in the upper 90s can hit a hundred he's the guy that you would typically think okay he's a closing throws hard but when you throw hard doesn't matter you throw it over the middle of the plate it's gonna get hit in the big leagues kinda missed he struck him out one being gone and the Sox a better [Music] and we'll send up sandy Leon hitless tonight he's popped up struck out grounded out so that average has dipped below 200 and Marco Hernandez the on-deck hitter meanwhile Brian Johnson loosening in the pen [Music] [Applause] Eduardo Rodriguez will take on the Texas Rangers in Game one going in eighteen and six tomorrow Rick Porcello is coming off a really fine effort will be bidding for his 14th win he goes in Game two Sox have not announced has started for the day game on Thursday last road game of the season on one missed a little low according to home plate on Conroy it's been pretty consistent tonight but may have missed that one [Music] I'd like to see it hard oh finish the season with 20 wins it's good even number he's worked hard flyball into right center kiermaier has it lined up to now you know coming from Spring Training where you know AC kind of talked him a little bit and it was in the media about how they told him that he need to kind of step up this year and he could have took it anyway he could have took it and said oh you know what I've been doing working hard and you know took it in a bitter way but he took it the right way like a young player should and he ran with it I think his manager deserves some credit I think he's managed them extremely well very smartly convinced him that yes you can learn from Chris Sale David Price Rick poor so you can learn from guys who've done some things in the game but you're your own guy with your own style and take that and run with it because your stuff is as good as anybody's without a doubt it he's he has made the changes himself I mean he's gone out there he's almost kind of been known as the guy just goes out there and throws the ball you know when he found himself into a lot of three two counts and he wasn't going deep into games because of it you know but he's really harnessed that figured out hey I need to attack the zone early I need to get these hitters behind the count and then put him away which is something he's struggled with in the past [Applause] [Music] [Applause] now they announced the attendance here tonight priests a daily 8000 779 routine battling for playoff spot looks like a Florida State football game they've got to find a way to get someplace where people can appreciate what they're doing and how good they've been on the field and in the front office here once the 9,000 people in a ball park that's just crazy it'd be interesting to see because I've played with some guys that have played here and it's just a laid-back kind of feeling in the clubhouse on the field there's no pressure and then when those guys go to a team that has some pressure situations they almost full so if you put them in a place where there's a little more pressure on them a little more media coverage there's not that laid-back feeling I hate to get preachy about attendance because people have their own reasons and it's expensive you know to bring families to ball games I get that but and I know that it's it's a work night school night whole nine yards but that just shouldn't be the case unless the nine thousand people to see this team which may be playing in October yep it deserves to be well they definitely deserve to have more people in the seats that's for sure [Applause] two down nobody aboard Tampa Bay with a big rally from for nothing down tonight [Applause] [Music] lunging ground ball and the scoop by Robertson on target that's all the Saxon to get our Xfinity show seen only lasted three and two-thirds but until there was one out before thinning get not allowed to hit then suddenly four runs against them as they exploded for six neither one of the starting pitchers was particularly sharp when Tammy Bay has a three-run advantage here in the eighth and Brian Johnson making an appearance out of the bull pen and doing battle with Austin Meadows Meadows has gone one for two of the single he's the man who really started their uprising in the fourth inning with a base hit and d'Arnaud singled and choice stepped up and crushed the three-run homer one batter later Lau hit a home run and a hit batsman then a massive home run by Willie Adamas to right field off the back wall out there [Applause] this would be a tough loss for the red sauce is a tough loss but the way they came out swinging got a four-run lead you thought okay they're gonna breeze through this shot to first base uploaded warlin he'll feed the pitcher going to Clemson say Johnson did not get there in time it'll be a base hit the meadow [Music] and we'll see Brian's okay took a little stumble there while covering the bag [Music] it's a tough play for Johnson just because he's a left-handed pitcher so he's falling off the mountain the other way you got a left-handed batter in the box whose quick out of the box so you got to make the make the adjustment you got to make the get out of the off the mound as quick as possible get over there as fast you can mitch me give him a good feed but meadows came out of the back of the box hard beat him out now went lunging for first base looks like you turn the ankle a little bit but he says he's fine that's a tough play there's so many things it's got to happen you got to get off the mound quick you got to get over there you got to catch the ball and you got to find the bag it's tough but used I know he's got one for three with a single it's ER now even at 8:00 the Red Sox have had opportunities in this game to be even closer than three runs down at left nine men on base Tampa Bay's only left one yeah that was the first four innings I mean they were getting guys on getting them over find a way to get those runs in there were singles but still they were able to get the lead like they did and then just seemed just kind of fell apart left some pitches over the middle to plate the three-run homer two-run homer [Music] [Music] Chuey on deck he said a good night with a home run and a double [Music] Meadows on at first and through therefore strike with the breaking ball [Music] Red Sox have a right-hander up in the bullpen and for a strike and it's Trevor Kelly [Music] great job by lyon there on that pitch i mean that's a tough pitch you waiting for the ball to go on the outside corner he Yanks it on the inside corner and Lyon does a great job presenting the ball to the umpire to get the strike well buddy out a man at first and a big swing and he came up empty down he goes on strikes put him away with a breaking ball time now for the carrying the freight moment brought to you by Old Dominion go back to that port Binney my choice three-run homer CC was leaving the ball up in the up in the box that he was just really play with fire against this office that can't put the ball of the ballpark and a couple signals the deep guys are and then show it kind of solidified with that three-run homer to get him back in the game carrying afraid brought to you by Old Dominion Freight Lines the official freight carrier Major League Baseball and the Boston Red Sox he's added a double along with the home run he's two for three and it's right it generous joy would agree but again they own did a great job presenting that ball keeping it in front of him making it look like a strike been a long game for him back there trying to buy strikes for his pitchers as you say he's done a couple times fly to center field but that's off the end of the bat I'm gonna play for JBJ two down I like that you save presents it for the home plate umpire presenting strike two instead of flaming right kind of has a negative connotation it really does I mean when you are catching the ball and the toughest thing for layout is he doesn't play every day so he's got to get his work in in between innings where he's warming up pitchers or bullpen work you know any way you can to get that work in so when he's in the game it feels like he hasn't taken a day off so you are you're presenting the ball to the umpire letting him know hey I'm not moving my glove around I'm just holding it right there for you cuz it destruct he sues Aguilar will hit for Garcia who is the man who has gunned down at third base on a sensational thrall by who he bets it was in the 6th inning Lexus making a pledge to strike out hunger every time a Sox pitcher strikes out an opponent Lexus will donate $50 to the Greater Boston Food Bank [Music] Aguilar making sure he says hello to everybody mr. sociable well like if gets a girl gonna get one it back might as well make it last sure he's hit three home runs in his last 10 games he got power he had a great season last year with the Brewers who's gonna be one of those guys that they needed to make a playoff front this year it's all an opportunity to make a trade and last year made the National League all-star team a 274 35 home runs drove in a hundred and eight runs from Milwaukee tied for fifth in the National League at those 35 home runs since he doing the race he's been 32 games you know pinch-hitter [Music] check the swinging it's inside and Lowell doing nothing it's something with Aguilera for the raises where do they put up play what position that's first base and if you got a guy like choi who has done what he's done it's hard to kind of find that that spot to put him in so they're just trying to find pieces and places and ways to put them because in the playoffs you need everybody to down a man at first and the throw over tip which and began in their bullpen Red Sox will have debts Debra's Martino's due up when we go to the ninth are you nothing a lot of times when you get a pinch-hitter coming the game especially going how you learn who can't hit a home run you get a little cute you're trying nibble because you know that they're in the game to swing the bat they're not up there taking so you get a little cue then all of a sudden you fall behind three oh that you gotta throw a strike and he's gonna miss ball four ran that inside to put him on so they're at first and second and Robertson will hit for the first time you get a base runner and be heredia to run for Aguilar Tampa Bay with a 74 lead late well the wind the best they could do is gain half a game on the idle Cleveland Indians but that would put them in the lead for that second wild card by half a game Oakland A's the leader for the American League wild card plus two I'm feeling that's going to go down to the last game get that feeling it just seems like it just I know that the Indians got the Nationals at the end but I think the Nationals are a team that gonna solidify one of those playoff spots so they're gonna start figuring out what they got to do to win that playoff game to get to the playoffs so that's gonna help the Rays he snaps in a breaking ball got the curve to land one and one you need to pitch home brought to you by Mbeki Insurance see him he's been missing with that breaking ball but that's his pitch that's his go-to pitch that's where he feels comfortable throwing first strike he's able to get that one in for a strike it's something for pitchers whenever they're breaking ball is their pitch to throw strikes they lose their fastball yeah so what do you use to get that fastball going again sometimes you just got a ride with it try your best to get ahead with it and then go to your bread and butter 2 on 2 out in the bottom of the 8th inning you know the A's have implanted really good baseball here down the stretch they 22 their last 10 leaving Tampa Bay by 2 for the wild-card and Cleveland leaving the boat by 2 and will come down to Tampa Bay were the Indians at this point for that second wild card here's the 2 2 pitch and swung on and missed he struck him out little strand 2 Red Sox coming up against Pagano in the night off in another lead for Tampa Bay stat cast a I powered by a double us look at this role moving a web gym type play to me what makes this play is the way it plays off the wall it didn't come up like he thought but he stays with it gets himself in a great position and just makes an unbelievable throw to third base than that goes here and travel 305 feet you don't see that every day no now at the plate Mookie's 1 for 3 Emilio began coming out of their bullpen trying to close it and the radius stays in a game play right field for the Rays the god sporting a 239 er a and 63 appearances throws hard he is very tough very tough to hit the pop foul out of play by mukki Devers on deck and then JT Martinez stay tuned for Red Sox final presented by wrote Heiser plumbing heating AC an electric before the game TC Stephen Lenny highlighting on a Roden Heiser heats on Mookie Betts and kiermaier the Red Sox had the raise on the rope early rapport nothing lead the raise looked dead and they just kind of woke up out of nowhere I got a couple of singles home run yeah it's like somebody hit the on button and they lit up for six runs in the fourth Pete - home runs away from 32 to the good news from Luke he's going into a ball park where the ball flies this kind of redid that field a few times over when I was there they grew the infield grass out find the hitters were upset you're gonna took away a lot of singles then they put the jetway that used to go out to right they kind of put a breezeway behind home plate which caused the ball not to fly as much then they closed that up now it's back into a hitter's ballpark and its last days now yeah new one coming due ballpark coming in Texas there's a rocket pulled in a left field meadows to cut it and Mookie's on with his second hit tonight good start for the Sox here in the ninth inning I'm interested see the defenses in that Park if they're gonna try anything different cuz Texas the state was always known for the building at centerfield and now they're gonna have a dome so I'm gonna try the nifty new invention air-conditioning she'll be welcomed by all going into steamy Arlington Texas in the middle of the summer Raphael one per for an RBI single that Sox trying to rally now in the night the guy with 20 saves [Music] [Applause] God not only has that hard fastball but that nasty slider to come along with it he's been tough on hitters all here the lefty poche up for I think that's the third time he had a bullpen tonight so he's loose he should be all heated up Raffaele drove in is 113th run to the 4th him that would get through for him that saw his way to third and reach easily and they'll be on the corners second hit for Rafi Devers it looks a lot like what the Red Sox were doing early in the game single here get the guy to third another single just the little things can help the team come back and get a big win DL with his first hit in seven at-bats against pagana but it gets him there [Music] there was a great job you see a slider that the pitch before was his nasty one which is buried he won't throw with two strikes that when he tried a little too much got a little cute with it left it up that's right endeavors his hot zone JT Martina is 1 for 3 an RBI single he reached a hundred RBIs tonight with a base hit in the fourth so the Sox with three men who have driven in a hundred Bogaerts Devers and Martinez would be sitting at 78 Jenny not happy with that one good reason that pitchers a little low [Music] guy like pecan as good as he is as good as stuff is you don't want to give him strikes needy old four three three strikeouts lifetime against pecan [Music] mitch moreland on deck hit three home runs in this series tonight he's ripped the double didn't start this evening Sam Travis did but Mitch came on the third inning promptly ripped the double I twisted fly here comes the radio just into the ballgame and in a foul territory makes the catch Mookie will not try it as the throw comes all the way in third basin it's a big forest out to get busy Martinez so one gone [Applause] on Friday Borland hit a pair of home runs second one against the god three bombs in the series he's due up next they're gonna take the gun out of the ball games and poche is coming on now we'll take the break seven two for Tampa Bay ninth-inning wheels are turning here they're gonna bring in a left-hander poche that was for Moreland and now Alex Cora counters he's gonna bring on Christian Vasquez to hit against the southpaw who does have a high AR a over five runners at first and third one man out Sox are trailing by three and Vasquez will take a strike [Applause] Christian was three four five with a home run yesterday and has hit 22 for the year Jackie Bradley on deck Jackie's had a real good night with three hits quickly on two desgas helped them there he went chasing [Applause] Mookie Betts at third repealed Evers at first Sox trying to close the gap [Applause] and he's wrecking out so two down [Applause] [Music] and now jackie has been pulled back in Xander Bogaerts who did not start tonight the night off for him but that's no longer the case he's going to swing yeah I mean at this point in the game you got to give your team an opportunity to win and you know left on laps always tough so they've tried to bring Bastian who's been swinging a hot bat hoping he can get a home run to get him back in the game and you got X now which you look at your bench he's the guy that brings you it the best chance the best opportunity at the show is Jim not a bad guy to bring off the bench in the ninth inning with a chance to tie it on one swing there was smart decision a couple of bats ago when JT hits the fly ball to right you know in a closer game I would expect Mookie to go but that run doesn't mean anything so for him to go would have really done nothing he might have scored but you're still down by 2 Xander a career-high 110 runs batted in 32 homers 51 doubles 83 extra-base hits those are all career highs [Music] but there are two down ninth-inning [Music] you never want to bring the winning run a plate but they're gonna be careful with with acts and make sure that they don't give them anything too good to hit see they got two guys warming up just in case AC wants to counter with bringing a new batter they can kind of flip off the pitchers [Applause] just the fourth time in Xander's career he has stepped in as a pinch-hitter in there for strike one and one on Bogaerts [Applause] the c-axis reaction there to me it tells you that he's looking out over the play he's looking for something over the plate to drive this pitch isn't too far in but his reaction shows you that his eyes are out over the plate [Applause] he represents the tying run fought off foul so one ball two strikes this is where X is better than anybody in the game with two strikes he doesn't try and do too much he's probably got more face hits the right field with two strikes than anybody they just shortens up puts the ball in play [Applause] well the crowd of less than 9,000 but they're on their feet here and lock it up it's a very big win even though it only gets them a half game in front of the Cleveland Indians who are not playing tonight here's the one two and struck him out Xander in disbelief but that ends the ball game that's a huge rally for the Tampa Bay Rays they were down four to nothing and were being no hit in the fourth inning they scored six in that frame they pull it out seven to four and we'll have more from the trough in just a moment
