I don't saturdaya soon and what folks around here would tell you is the greatest rivalry and the game we got the Cardinals and the Cubs that game 160 of the season in the game that means it's off the lot this redford squad you can see how these play postseason playoff picture is looking right now the Cardinals and the Brewers Polk secured a spot in the postseason of course the perucrew just a game outside of the Redbirds if the Cardinals win tonight if the Brewers lose in Colorado the Cardinals win their first division title 2015 Messiah gorgeous Bush stadium Aaron Goldsmith in the Hall of Famer John Smoltz and John we start talking October baseball we've all talked about the bullpens but however look at this Cardinals team this year especially in the second half we're talking the rotation it's the reason they're in a position and their managers stressed that when they weren't pitching very well in the first half he said I need my starters to go deeper take the pressure off the pen and not look for getting out of the game in their first sense of trouble there's the numbers in the first half second half tells the story with their offense hot and cold there their basic starters have turned it up in the second half and that's why they're in the position they're in a lot of those starters goes today Adam Wainwright he's a future Cardinals Hall of Famer has been a mainstay here in st. Louis for well over a decade he has been sensational at home he's been terrific in September as well he really has he loves September it's one of his best months of the calendar year and why not because he's been through it all whether it's closing out a game or starting he loves pitching at home there's the numbers in September and what I got to have on the mound when you know his motor is they got a chance to win the division other than Jack clarity I you could say that Adam Wainwright is as good as it gets what it said for these companies they want last night in Game one of the series but they snapped at a nine game losing streak that eliminated them from the playoffs they of course hope to play spoilers to their hearts rival look at the Cardinals and here from st. Louis first pitch coming right up [Music] this temperature pushing 80 degrees just a bit of a slight breeze clouds overhead but still some sunshine at this hour as Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals take the field this month the good thing for the right fielder Tony 10 rookie Niko Horner is at second base batting second in power were pushing 40 home runs on a campaign visit left field batting third home run last night the Beckham Jonathan Lucroy does the catching while carrot team is at first Addison Russell David voting Odie is at third base Cole Hamels will do the pitching and bat ninth uncle Charlie himself is up on the mound what a bounce back here you can see the numbers here he's making his 31st started zra is a smidge beneath for the scouting report on Wainwright well certainly he loves pitching at home right home sweet home he has been a different pitcher here in his home uniform and September might be his favorite month when you think about what he's been able to do this September and in his career and really it is all about that curve ball 12 to 6 represents how he's going to manipulate that ball if you think of the hands of a clock it's going to go from 12 to 6 and it's a pitch he relies on and a pitch that he is perfected for the st. Louis Park now nobody has throwing more curveballs this year and his ball than Wainwright how about in between August 9th the Cubs top spot of essential they'd once it's a 7 min while the Red Birds going the opposite direction since then ups 5 games under 500 some huge injuries fires rizal brian losing 9 of 10 how about that man John Jack clarity 32 and 15 for the Red Birds since the 9th of August not the best earned run average of any pitching staff in the game well talking to their manager earlier in the year he said we have to turn it around by the starting staff and they were able to do that that was three months ago in Chicago and they were struggling and he said and when we got to talk to him he said I'm gonna ask my starters to not look so quickly to the bullpen they have it's paid off second half Kempton with a bunt back to the mound Wainwright an easy play one pitch in a while [Applause] [Music] now the rest of this Cardinals defense tonight Ozuna Theater Fowler left to right Vader of course Devils off hands and round at center field carpenter on the hot corner the young and Edmund up the middle Boltzmann at first base and Yadier Molina who has got the seventh most games in baseball history once again behind the plate tonight no surprise let's write one to Niko Horner Wainwright no longer throws 95 miles an hour 94 but what he does do is spot his fastball and uses an array of breaking pitches to get these hitters out it was a game earlier in the year where everyone caught notice of that fact that I just said where he pitched about a hundred and twenty eight pitches against his berry cubs and I think everybody was ready to get all over the manager for leaving a pitcher in this day and age but that many pitches but they ended up winning that game let's start for Wainwright three pitches all strikes and he punches out the rookie Niko Horner he'll throw a cutter he'll throw a fastball he'll be able to throw this breaking ball but I tell you what this breaking ball right here has become a signature pitch Chris Carpenter when he once pitched here had a similar curveball and Wainwright can go to it at any time he wants and that's a luxury you see Mike Maddux who's done a great job here turning this staff into now really one of the hottest staffs going into the playoffs you could make that argument there's no question about that they have the shift down here for cows schwarber on the first pitch a deep ride up to right field Fowler turning watching about this from schwarber first pitch he sees it puts the Cubs in front his 38th of the campaign [Applause] most hitters will look for location but it looked like he was looking for that breaking ball if he's looking location this is exactly the pitch you want to hit if you're a hitter if you're looking for that pitch it's exactly what you want to do with that pitch if you're the hitter and shworvel was ready and jumped all over it for an early one tune up and lead first pitch strike to Ian half fourscore BER his first career home or Appa Wainwright I'll say this about Wainwright he is pumping strikes early nothing but strikes Billy Williams left-handed hitter with more home runs and a single year than four per franchise history one of the very many not-so-obvious to go along with many obvious home run records enter either being shredded this year or being close to broken it's interesting if you're facing Adam Wainwright really the best pitch to hit is the first pitch that's exactly what schwarber did coming into this game 434 in the first pitch off of Adam Wainwright is that an outlier or do you feel like that's true more times than not I you know it's a it's gonna be the highest for a lot of pitchers it's gonna be a high average against you get you run into some guys who it's better to take first pitch based on the way that they throw but for the most part you're cherry-picking a pitch and the pitchers trying to guess whether you're hitting or not I always felt like the rule of thumb for me is if I thought you were gonna swing first pitch I was throwing you a secondary pitch in a big moment I wanted you not to square it up you talked about what a great month it has been for Wainwright that's only the second home run he's allowed this month surrendered a home run his last start and very Homer friendly Chase Field in the desert here's the payoff over the shift in into right field in front of Paulo he had half a two-out single and right now the curveball just has a little bit more of a hump than normal or Wainwright three-two he can throw it any pitch and it just kind of hangs up right there on the outside part of the plate there's the grip on the pitch and coming into this game hitters are hitting only to 11 and I only had two home runs hit off that pitch so you know at times it's coming but when he throws it as tight and as good as he can not a whole lot you can do with it if you're a hitter [Music] now facing Jonathan Lucroy where's Luke Roy was such a big part of the Oakland A's success last year behind the plate and getting this year with the Angels then DFA picked up by the Cubs of free agent and year's end ball one fieldin culbreth is our home plate I'm firing he's in his 21st year the pride of South Carolina has twice umpired the Fall Classic [Music] of all the strike it's been an amazing 12 days for both of these clubs in opposite directions 12 days ago the cubs were in a perfect spot I thought to make a dent in the vision but also kind of cement their place in the wild-card race and that historic five games in a row they lost by one run put them in this position that they're not playing for anything at this point hang time towards Fowler in right field and a foul ground attendant attached going back to that series the first game when they have seven games left against a team that's in front of you you rally with three runs and a chance to win it in the ninth in Game one of that series ultimately lose on a home run in the 10th and then lose three more Heartbreakers amazing how the Cardinals were able to put away the Cubs but not put away the Milwaukee Brewers who have been on a torrid stretch whereas carpenter had one of those home runs then a struggle for Craig Kimbrel as the Cardinals went to the Northside and swept the Cubs in four games winning by a run each time swinging mr. rabbit I'm defers the damage down to the veteran right-hander cows schwarber 403b one of the defense is giving the copies of one Emily of September plaintiff a Jewish home runs hit by any team that will be playing in October this year be facing the veteran called Hamels 35 years old limited this year missed five woods because of an oblique Johnny had his last start skipped because of some shoulder fatigue he's trying to finish on a high note he is and this is what you're facing when you or if you're Cole Hamels you want to get a strike early success rate goes way up he's got a great changeup so change it up and then second time through the order has not been great for him don't know how deep he'll go in today's game but one thing that Cole does very well is he has that sneaky changeup and hitters just don't pick up four seam fastball he'll cut it he'll throw his curveball and he occasional throw his sinking fastball so Cole Hamels I'm pretty good at navigate both sides of the plate missing away one and one it's kind of it a story of two different seasons for Cole Hamels who mentioned that oblique injury Hamels really got off to a fantastic start this year before finding himself on the Shelf and has struggled to regain that consistency how about this first 17 starts a sub three his last nine pushing six-and-a-half as he was on the injured list from late June to early August and it's condom in the story of this Chicago cuff season their starters are veterans they've had the injury bug a little bit here they're Darvish to start to come back a little bit but they haven't been where they were when they were dominating a couple years ago but hopper right back to the mound battle retired now the defense behind the Cole Hamels schwarber and left half gets the nod at centerfield Tony Kemp the former Astro is in right field how about the infield Bodie and Russell on the left side Niko Horner the rookie and keratsini who we see with the pitching gear on more time tonight is that for his face Jonathan Lucroy a veteran catcher is behind the dish Edmond has handled the fastball so far early looking to hit the fastball not horrible against off-speed the Cardinals usually finds somebody the last few years they've always found somebody that comes up and gives them a spark and it fills in nicely along with their everyday guys that they plug in think about the outfielders that have come and gone here in the last four years and the spark that they had when they were here whether it's Grichuk Tony you know fam they basically have a farm system that has produced we talk about young pitching and producing pitching that's something that's missing from the Chicago Cubs and the reason why they're gonna have to go find some more pitching they haven't developed us a young pitcher in a long time whereas the Cardinals that's pretty much been their mo along with the Dodgers now you can look at the Braves and see what they're developing and that window of success goes up because those young pitchers develop and grow and stay on your team on it is in some ways what makes the Braves so unique isn't it they have the position player for force all these an akuna who they develop to become absolute stars and then they also have so much young pitching it's hard to find an organization that doesn't both very well in the same window yeah they they went through a long you know drought and suffered when you get to this point with two teams that have had success won a World Series have been modeled around the same the Boston Red Sox you could say and the Chicago Cubs they went got their pitching veteran pitching didn't work out this year for the Boston Red Sox they weren't able to get back to the postseason after winning it all last year and the Cubs to some degree had fallen in that same category veteran pitching but not where they would have liked it to be on a consistent factor they find themselves on the outside look at him it was a 3-2 to Edmond he gives a rock two up and two down first punch-out for Cole Hamels [Music] well there's the sinker and there's a good job catching the inside part of plate purpose of that pitch was exactly that it's a veteran pitcher who knows how to work both sides of the plate and knows that he doesn't have to pitch with extreme velocity he uses movement change of speeds now [Music] to ask nobody out for Goldschmidt they just solve the home runs and RBIs for Goldschmidt through series at 33 homers has pushed it 100 runs batted in Johnny and yet this Cardinals lineup of course there was such high hopes with the addition of Goldschmidt coming over from the desert yeah base is good it's almost 100 points higher than the batting average but needless to say that they've been hoping for more from this lineup in total and hoping that Bolton it would be the major galvanized if that yeah and and what I thought would have an impact on the rest of the guys the guys before Goldschmidt and after and ozune as the guy that they going to have to get hot Goldie has kind of done his job he ironically has not had any success hardly off of Cole Hamels in this career po2 there is Ozuna on deck cleanup hitting left fielder soft down towards lats war burn you out significance name and heartless have their first base runner early on tonight that was one of those big swings but soft lighter Laura has got better and left field but wouldn't call of an elite defender yet yes so you see there's a chance there's a chance this ball kind of gets and just enough to where he can't square it up and head it towards Big Mac or big act land since the camp has been courtesy of Paul to young all too young so it stopped taking out the M in Big Mac land and then recently purchased that letter at auction with the money the proceeds going to charity Cardinals carrot weave beneficiary of that home run and the Ronald McDonald House nothing in 1/2 of Zuna mizuna not feeling let down just right going to enough Cole Hamels gets that it's gonna be a tough however many innings for the Cardinal batters because this is in off the plate and a good pitch obviously but one that may open up the outside part now if he wants to play gets tied up in knots good-looking curveball from Cole Hamels nice transfer baserunner strikes out to anything in the books Cubs up top - is sponsored by Budweiser joined the team that enjoys responsibly Budweiser reminds you to drink wiser [Music] now the sound of the Gateway Arch cups have a one-nothing lead as we move to the top to second baseman Viktor carotene II 26 years old out of Puerto Rico names it off for the Cubs done a nice job filling in and playing a couple roles the injuries the Cubs is sustained and their position players which is unlike 30 years past they stayed pretty healthy and offensively they were always a threat to beat you up this year they became one-dimensional for the most part hit homers flog up the bases sto dos gave them a kind of a jolt when they needed it and that trade he came over and really kind of sparked the offense but it's shocking still to think 14 days ago where they were sitting and where they are now and of course beat up a little bit physically Castellanos out of the lineup once again suffering with a bit of a groin issue easy ground ball that meant over in the shift now what exactly is the future of the Cubs skipper Joe Maddon for more on that we'll go down to the Felix Adler first time to Ken Rosenthal skinny Aaron Joe Maddon will meet with Cubs president of all operations Theo Epstein after tonight's game to clarify his status the overwhelming expectation is that he will not be offered another contract not be asked back simply put the Cubs want a firmer hand Matins relaxed style was considered perfect when he took over in 2015 but his players grew complacent after winning the World Series the following year and Epstein gradually grew frustrated that Maddon this view could not instill a greater sense of urgency now the front office is not above blame as John said they've not developed pitching in a homegrown way set some questionable free agent signings also overrated some of the team's younger hitters and even ownership bear some responsibility for limiting the team's payroll flexibility even though the Cubs did open the season with the third highest payroll in the majors the question now guys who replaces Madden David Ross is thought to be a leading possibility and where does Madden end up I reported earlier this week that the Angels could dismiss Brad Ausmus if Madden becomes available the Phillies and Mets also could have openings and the Padres already do have one the kids point obviously he has roots in SoCal bench coach Mike Scioscia for many years with the Angels put the Rays to a World Series won it with the Cubs third most wins the Cubs have and all the baseball since Madden took over I mean you can make the point some of things that they thought would work out did not some of the signings maybe or some of the trades they built a really good core of young position players and that became the basis for which they could build and add pitching they went out and either trade it or got the starting pitching that led them to the World Series that's what won the World Series and then of course the trade of our alders Chapman coming in to close out games turning over a really really good player to the New York Yankees who might be the reason that two franchises win a World Series if you think about it that way and then this year they ran out of that pitching in the depth in the bullpen had its injuries the late signing of Craig Kimbrel did not pan out and it'll be interesting to see the direction they go next year because as we mentioned the young pitchers in the farm system don't seem to be anywhere close to being added in one way or another now you referenced labor Torres he's had an incredible follow up season to what was it all star came to campaign last year now starting to the Bronx as Wainwright and said 1 & 2 on bode number 8 hitting third baseman strong argument last year could have easily been the Rookie of the Year what's what he did in the city that he played in which has to have a higher point of entrant emphasis of the city he played in there's not everybody can do that in New York in pinstripes in their first year and having another monster year this year for a franchise that is trying to get to the World Series and win it so that this decade doesn't come and go without a Yankees championship one out one on Russell aboard after his single up the middle three strikeouts already for Adam Wainwright [Music] there is colehamels our conversations today with Mike Shildt the skipper for the Cardinals John you were talking to him about Wainwright and how Wainwright thrives on situations like this as we referenced at the top of the game if the Cardinals win tonight and if the Brewers wall in Denver to the Rockies they watched last night then Cardinals would wrap up their first division title since 2015 Mike Shildt described Wainwright pitching in these types of games as his oxygen yeah everyone has a different motor this is dropping bear that's the matter of feet he's not going to get there in time Russell into second base the parachute single from the pitcher cold Hamels little surprise they were shading him as steep as they were II think you might have him a little more shallow but he gets jammed it shows up as a live drive missile to left field but I thought he was a little deep to start with as a pitcher hitting sometimes you just can't explain how great you are Sam Hills finds his way to first base throughout some - on top of the order herb missing wine Tony Tim Edmunds been pretty busy early on tonight skimmer his direction to our stranded on the bottom the second heavily I think mr. Molina is happy there's somebody else in centerfield after last night it's a very good point yadi had a complete robbery against him last night [Music] number time or a junior was not a friend there's the first one that one was let's just take an extra base hit away but this one this is a sensational catch line tremendous defender and the flowers to take that one back I used to do that BP quite often I'd yell back to the hitter and BP you know extra meal extra push up Jonnie taking exception to this we could get to the meddler [Applause] they're not people running on the field from the stands us just the expended extended rosters of bullpen guys [Applause] got sweaty then after hours [Applause] he's now talking things up with Melina [Applause] you could see yachties face light away once he was head will you make it this time I really don't understand it wasn't like he was drilled for one thing [Music] it's still hot about it amell's seventh hit batter of the season which isn't really an outlier one way or the other I mean hamos if you see the replaying turned around vivy Beth didn't even look at Yanni was kind of probably caught off guard by the two making contact or yadi saying something but you tried to throw that pitch in that's the second time in his career he has plucked milena so it goes in and of course Cole Hamels is upset that it nicked them that part one will never know so look at abyss or Matt Carpenter along the lines of colehamels 35 years old he's a free agent n years in we mentioned earlier that he missed significant time five weeks because of an oblique he had his last scheduled starts skipped because of shoulder fatigue Ken one is fair to wonder what exactly is the future of colehamels it is fair to wonder that Aaron and he considers this a very big start when I told him that tonight's game was on national TV yesterday he said Oh a big audition for him this is his first venture into free agency and he knows he is an older guy he's going to be 36 next season and he said you have to prove yourself you have to show people why you can be that sort of outlier not fit into the typical mold that everyone is trying to put older players in I don't think that's fair I think I'm different he wants to show that tonight it's not in his interest to be hitting pitter hitters welfare or not last impressions sometimes carry more weight than they should and it can help you but it could also hurt you a lot more than it should I'm the last impression of a couple starts down the stretch or a bat postseason start completely agree with Kenny's reporting there that we have categorically determined to age as a rare strikeout with the bunt bouncing with two strikes away from the shift doesn't work out for them tonight's telecast is sponsored by Wells Fargo this is a commitment to better banking this is Wells Fargo it's amazing you know we talk about the different errors that we're in and of course there's a different area you can't really always go back but I'm thankful then at 35 and 36 I started feeling like I still had about four or five or six more years did you start feeling like you're in the prime of your career at 33 32 you just figuring everything out and you're learning your toolset hopefully lasts a lot longer but today's different it is it's more velocity driven and more perception based on kind of accumulative numbers that come together and this would be in today's time a aging veteran staff fair or not but do you think it's fair to question whether or not as you look at Chris Lester Hamels coming up in a different era in terms of velocity max effort as we see now and the reliance on breaking pitches sliders and curveballs so popular forward flounder to the young retired there is simply for a picture coming up like that clarity who will be speaking with slowly come inside the Cardinals dugout for a guy coming up in today's era that by the time you're 32 or 33 there is more wear and tear because it is back separate because there aren't more breaking pitch to no doubt go down this is a max effort it's the it's the high intensity velocity that is hard to sustain I caught a Justin Verlander a freak long time ago and the reason I call him a freak is I consider him like a ten-speed bike his velocity ket ears he didn't live at tent speed all the time he would cruise he'd be going downhill at times n even pitch uphill and there's the things that you can learn from a guy like that genetically he's gifted but we are so quick to look to velocity that we missed the pitch ability and that pitch ability I believe will make a comeback but you can't maybe have a whole staff of guys who don't have mixed in velocity with it if that makes sense it's hard to have four or five Kyle Hendricks but every team needs a Kyle Hendricks every team could use it John luster or every team could use that one picture that's going to provide innings and I think that's really the missing piece of combination that staffs are now kind of certain teams have hoarded the pitching if you think about it it's all on five teams for the most part Washington the Mets had it now you could make a saint make it you know the Dodgers always had it the Braves are starting to get it of course Houston Cleveland and then after that it's it's scarce and teams are piecing it together with high usage in the bullpen or up and down guys out of the out of the Marnell minor-league system the Boston Red Sox had it it's still a blueprint that gives you a better advantage to make a deep run in 100 cities this year's definitely been the haves and have-nots in the game fader it's out of the way and has three other one and the fans remembering that that man was set to begin to sitting well count there's that signature pits behind an account 3-1 it goes to that change of it's just kind of like a I'm gonna call it a dead fish fastball but it's so good coming out of his hand that looks like a fastball and just has this tiny fade and you can see the miles per hour it is a signature pitch for Cole Hamels his mechanics and delivery usually go hand in hand and why he's been so successful for so long that's the other component if you're good if you have good mechanics and you can repeat them you're gonna pitch a lot longer in the big leagues then the guy that rares back and just lets it eat so to speak I mean that's what that would be about what I think you I see you as a let it eat kind of let down let your hair down no pun intended just maybe you wouldn't let your hair down because that's support view but it's important to America John it is support in America but I mean let it eat it eat Bader down on strikes for punch-out for Hamels who works around the leadoff it's my pitch got a bit of a rub be right back after word from our local sponsor I just have one empty lead going to the top of the third all right now we take you decide that Cardinals dugout and we say hello to one of the great young studs in the game particularly the National League Jack clarity jack first of all thank you for joining us you know this is a pretty competitive ballgame for you guys to be watching right now yeah a big ballgame here you know we got a we got our guy why not fun to watch he's he's been doing this for a long time but you know he continues got that compete now Jack I know as the folks just saw your numbers on the lower third there we know that new pitchers don't like to talk about your numbers typically so let's just say this the second half Jack has been Bob Gibson ask it has been remarkable what has been the biggest key for you particularly since the all-star break because you've taken it to a beer that few camp I'll say I don't know that anybody should ever be put in the same conversation or putting the same sentence Bob Gibson that guy was a that's a legend and you know he's he's an unbelievable person he's but he's easy he's absolute legend but you know in regards in second half is just a you know a matter of execution going out there getting continuing to compete continuing to things out within the first half just executing when it came into carrying a bigger spots and situations runners on Jack I know there's so many components that that are unknown to when you're gonna pitch again but just hypothetically if you were pitching tomorrow and this was two weeks ago what's your day before do you just kick back do you not think about pitching how do you how do you get prepared just to get around fear not my day before I do some movement some kind of movement mobility stuff just to get my body moving around and then you know get with one of the changes get stretched out make sure that I'm feeling right you know body's feeling you know a certain way and then you know play my catch do a couple light Sprint's make sure that I feel good but then you know I'll typically spend either you know part of the day or part of the game looking at the other team whoever we're playing next so I've been looking at these guys for these first couple innings here just you know read up and a couple things don't see them a bunch so it's not like a new team we're looking at but just kind of refreshing on a certain guys here and there a jack for folks in this baseball town it's been far too long since the Redbirds have played in October when the Carnales were last of the postseason you were on the mound Jack for the Peoria Chiefs and when you think about what it's like to pitch in October something that you no doubt have dreamed about what do you think about when you consider pitching in this ballpark in the playoffs a lot of fun on a lot of energy you know you at least myself you know I've watched all those times that you know these guys have been been here and been in these kind of situations than pitching in October pitching in the playoffs so you know you just you just kind of envision a lot of fun and being out there and I'll continue to play this game with these guys and you know a lot of emotion but you know trying to treat it like another game as much as you can I know pitchers have a lot of pride as obviously do the hitters and your manager talked to me about three months ago about getting the starting staff to think about going deeper in the game the young that's the shift we waited brandman to get over there yeah that's a tough well that's the shift right there were admins over you out of a job hard to cover that much ground yeah yeah yeah that's one of those things that Paul knows that he's over he's he's kind of that Evans kind of pulled over but you know he gave the check but he made sure to get one there so that was good so what your manager talked about you know to me talking about what this team could do if the starters get to that next level and you guys have gone to that next level and you've had that second half and Hudson and Wainwright collectively is there anything that you guys talked about or anything or is it just as easy a feeding off of each other when you get the ball rolling every time the starter gets on the mound no we just feed off each other it's a it's a constant you know it's a constant competition between each of us and every time we go out there we go throw a bullpen or you know some guy goes out there and throws a Jam the next guy kind of wants to one-up him but you know mad dogging chill today they challenged us to kind of go out there and go deeper into games and and be the guys that they saw us being you know they had a lot of confidence in us and I know we did too but we just had to go out there and pitch like it you know myself we know you know Dakota has been really good all year miles was really good he was good in the second half even even waka you know once he got healthy everybody that kind of went in there it didn't really matter we just we just compete with each other you know we try to help each other out everyday day in day out watching bullpens and just you know just little things here and there so we just took it as you know it was you know they challenged us and we tried to you know we try to just take it on and do we click OK 2 balls and a strike well if I know Adam Wainwright as well as I do and you guys and your fun competition yep let's see let's set the record what you're close right you're close to going deep when 20 when do you anticipate you know the the homer in your you know it's that's really bad because we did we have not hit a homer as a staff this year and that's something that we kind of talked about you know we we've done our part we we've had a lot of production out of the nine hole you know when I was gonna get his chance here tonight but you know we had I think we had three or four last year miles it to and then gant hits you and Carlos also hit one so you know it's coming where we just know you take out hitting very seriously over here as you should yeah hey speaking of Adam Wainwright it's hard to imagine if you're a young picture a better veteran to have in your rotation has homered and back-to-back games the Cardinal excuse me the Kaaba stab extended their lead the three nothing on a couple of Homer's [Applause] it brings in horner [Applause] his eighth career homerun at the Carnales expense well this one just catches a little bit too much of the plate see the movement over the plate and that a heater yeah a sinker that grande back over the plate that paps been known for the three true outcomes and his brief career of homers strikeouts two walks and we've got a hold of one there I mention this earlier Wainwright had allowed just one home run this month yeah he's been he's been really really good now he's given up two in the first couple of innings two outs now what's it like being around Adam Wainwright jack because he has got to be one of the best mentors pretty young picture to have yeah he's a total team guy you know he's gonna he's gonna take the time out take time out of his day to help everybody that he can young guy old guy doesn't matter he's there for everybody he's gonna he's gonna show you how he's gonna show you how a professional does it you know when it comes to watching it a team watching the games doing scouting her--for it's just when it comes everything he's gonna be there he's gonna help you every step away well Jack we appreciate the time man it's good to visit with you we know that the big expectations for you and the Cardinals come October time we appreciate you taking a few moments out of this game and joining us always always Thank You Susan it has been for Jack Flaherty especially in the second half nothing on Cara teeny now a little luck here there and it would be easily a 17 1819 win the season still matters in my count I don't care what other people say the team a chance to win every time you go out airball missing 119 pitches last time he faced the Cubs masterful four to one he was leading after eight innings fortunately the Cardinals couldn't finish it off in nine they finished it off in ten two outs nobody on two-run home run by Ian Hampton scams crazy game everybody's looks to the schedule looks to certain situations when we get to the last weekend and the Cubs are missing a lot of starters Cardinals are in a position to lock up the division and you just never know what from Dave day what's gonna go on in baseball that's why it's sneaky we play so many of those games of the Nationals winning earlier tonight at home against the Indians they have secured home field advantage for the wild card now 92 and 69 when it comes down to it the Cardinals got a brew crew a Cardinals come-from-behind win tonight and a Brewers lost they're about to get things teed off in Denver I mean that the Cardinals would win the division chopper burner in time of the third a couple of homeruns Julie from the Cubs the latest a 2-run absolute blast by Ian half going yard he said Wainwright gets jackknifed to begin the home third former Silver Slugger Award winner that's pretty darn good by the way that's actually like for an everyday player it's like a three 3340 hitter but we've been over this before so your your numbers for pitchers average yeah I got my own theory and these philosophy right no I mean I think it's pretty rock-solid it's we're adding roughly 150 points yeah usually in most cases you could actually double it but in fairness he's played long enough where doubling is not perfectly accurate I mean even if you're hitting 350 you still strike out every once in lolly everyone every 350 hitter I know at least it's got 50 to 100 in this you're asking a picture to pinch-hit once every five days it's not the easiest job to do so you got to take into consideration that $1.99 for a batting average I mean the stan musial just walk back to the dugout understand well stan musal had to wait hit once every five days I don't think stan musial would be stan musal was the man he would have been one-fifth of the man how dare you sir how dare you led me down that road ball one Dexter Fowler back at the top of the order [Music] a five punchouts first time through for Cole Hamels all his Trank we go down to Kenny Kenny your thoughts on this matter well John stan musial didn't hit once every five days because he was pretty good at hitting five every five that's right but I'm saying if he had to hit once every five days we will never we would never know that's a bizarre hypothetical one thing I take out of this is that Ken's little combative early on tonight which I respect I think that's good have a little still have some gas left in the tank this late in the season well you know what was gonna be interesting to see how this game plays out is game time in Colorado is a little bit behind this game so the Milwaukee Brewers get a little bit of an adrenaline boost before they start their game which is right about now with the Rockies seeing the scoreboard of being treatin uh and knowing that if it holds and obviously they'll watch to see if it holds they could be looking at a much different situation come to Sunday Frank 3 Paul Fowler asking if that was to touch in six strikeouts hold Hamels check out stick to the first ten Vincent the two seam fastball that he has you know the signature pitches has changed up but that two seam fastball that I said early on that he got off the plate was going to be a bad sign for the Cardinals so far he's been able to expose that side of the plate by an inch or two and if a left-handed pitcher like Cole Hamels can do that and then he's got that fadeaway changeup on the outside part of the plate gonna be difficult and look for some Cardinal hitters to be start getting upset on that pitch being called if it continues throughout the night - laughs nobody on for Tommy Edmund I always felt as a pitcher and it's human nature I mean the umpires are and you know we don't have by the way looking at that home view it's not a perfect angle just to be fair Campos a little offset get the box there it's not a hundred percent but there's always a side of the plate that you could steal an inch or two and make the illusion look like it's actually a better pitch to the up punch they may disagree with me and they may have those theories that says one thing or another but I just know bad things done having white catcher setup in a certain place and telling him wherever we can get that inch or to start gnawing on it like start going to it and putting more pressure on the hitter and the umpire because it's enticing in that area so you're always looking to see in the early part of the game I always used to think an umpire had one side of the plate he was a little leaning on by human nature and then we try to expose two outs of all the two strikes Troy doing the catching now did you know if you had seen an umpire enough times yes you knew where that was yes for the most part yes and you know that's why this topic of pitch framing has become such a kind of info skill set let me just tell you something pitch framing means nothing if your pitcher can't get you into position to even make it look like a strike so it still relies on the pitcher getting the ball more times than not in a certain area to give your catcher a chance to do exactly that count evens up to Tommy Edmund was having a masterful month of September leads the National League in hits in total bases went three for four last night with a walk hang it up in centerfield happen that's it to bet for out number two ring they can't miss it the pride of the Dora Pennsylvania's stand the man 3-nothing County's sponsored by State Farm talked to an agent today and by Papa John's large meats or words Pizza just help us Cubs leading three nothing on a pair of home runs Kyle schwarber and then he inhabits run blasts as the rustle leaves off the fourth strike one the one one dropped out the interesting a/c not only a decision as a manager where they bring back Joe Maddon or not that conversation will be had but this the direction the Cubs go and some of the personnel decisions whether or not they add pitching it's been talk of this Bryant and a trade of Chris Bryant that is yeah all kinds of different types leadoff man retired let's go back to Los Angeles check in with Mike Hill to game break what's going on Mike that's incredible judge had such high compliments that I praise of Alonso after that record was tied Charlie comes in for strike one to bode and that's the good news but the bad news is for the Mets that's a hard number to waste yeah you're right on a team that had a lot of expectations with their starters just over Edmonds Leake and I don't mean waste like it's just you get a production like that out of a rookie and you would think if you blindfold it if you blindfolded a lot of fans that said okay you're rookies gonna get you 53 to 55 home runs playoffs sure our pitching staff playoffs the moves we made playoffs and it didn't work out they made a nice run but they came up short and that's a franchise that has been close to putting it together and offensively they got some fireworks didn't end up in a postseason unfortunately for them od taken off the later tab again he said don't see that very often great gaudium Molina one thing you don't expect is the runner to go with the pitcher at the plate high throw couldn't get the tag down then a good little slide there a swim move when out on a runner in scoring position ticking off a Wainwright's glove dying in no man's land and Hamels is aboard for the second time [Applause] people don't understand how hard that is as a pitcher and that circumference of the mound you should be able to cover both sides of that and it's so hard to know space time and awareness that your infielder behind you is gonna get this right you got to run around second practice this play all the time six foot seven Adam Wainwright and II just tips it away but it's like checking where your defenders are gonna be all the time is like third or fourth on the list from importance of what you're trying to do when you're on the mound and obviously they need a double play or a pop-up bad read by OD wow you stayed home two outs Wow first and third it's got to be an automatic contact play automatic this was not even hit hard enough he goes right now there's no chance he freezes hindsight is if they didn't have the contact play on because of a fast runner at the plate meaning it'd be harder for the double-up than you are just reading the ball they had a conversation and the third base goes to discuss either way what happened Brian Butterfield a longtime staple in this game where's trying to Nico Horner think Horner thought he'd be in this situation this year he was slated for the fawley first member of last year's draft class to reached the show 24th overall out of Stanford he's been really good with runners in scoring position so far in the year for the Cubs [Applause] well if adam wainwright is able to get out of this inning it'll feel like the Cardinal scored a run because holding it to three to nothing will catch who serve as a boost for his team when he get to go to the plate next inning [Applause] her ball mrs. debated one and two nothing more frustrating for a pitcher and especially the athleticism by Adam Wainwright to know that that ball tips off through the glove and he got first and third one out Ponce de Leon is now warming up you know you're not long for the game if you give up a few runs the bullpen will be in two outs - its scoring position but one two can I just say I love the sauce it's like you just are not alone we rarely get to see him you know in different culture cool thing is the pants go over the spikes I mean over the spikes like underneath the spikes that's the new thing that this is culture that's nice so they pull hood arabic can't have everything for a while and I I don't think this is the case anymore but for a while every minor leaguer in the Cardinals farm system had to go high socks I wouldn't doubt it now that's culture don't see stirrups anymore at the built in two and once under the socks I'm like oh I went there I went there I use the size Ozuna to his left settles underneath well the runners stay put nobody scores and Wainwright gets out of a jam a the home fourth cab is leading three nothing you know last week we had braun strowman and earth our booth I've thought about some stuff that could have permanently disabled me if I tried on him but I for the sake of TV I didn't go there especially with your hips you my gosh who that special experience on your part yeah I had to cheer ready to go although I knew you must had a soft pretzel around that's something everybody fit in the booth okay that was tough I mean that's not a big booth no that was tough I'll be honest I was sitting on his lap but there was there was a bus Rou all in two strikes not that I want to move on Goldschmidt leading things off I sit in the open that for Cole Hamels the second time through the lineup that's when the a batting averages go up for whatever reason first time okay second time goes up then he settles back the third time so I would think for the Cardinals don't know how long Cole's going to be in there he's just been punching tickets all night long that's his seventh join em OB and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month between September 15 and October 15th MLB in his clubs will shine a spotlight on contributions to baseball made by Latino players past and present Bono las mejores and mo be on Twitter Facebook and Instagram for full coverage season high strikeout total for Hamels this year is 10 that came in his last start against these Cardinals he's looking at that sometimes overplayed last impression that he wants to leave his final start a course of the year free agent and the end the season animals now ninth all-time on the strikeout list among lefties it's the Big Unit at the top of that southpaw list now one and two he's just done a great job tonight with the mixture of pitches he's got that high leg kick and classic delivery and just repeats the same arm angle for that changeup that is it muddy pitched when he's on he makes a lot of hitters look foolish our chopper Addison Russell paddles up smoothly two away the Cubs Yadier Molina his last time up oh it didn't look like much at the time until yadi was given that glance and making his way towards first [Applause] [Music] and everybody came out [Applause] so what happens now will they pitch him inside oh you will it's kind of looking forward to something like that you know Boston 32 relievers between the two teams imagine that scene the Red Sox set with 17 men Bolton 17 or 19 yeah it was crazy but they had 17 and then maybe 15 for Minnesota time no more though that's here play September buy different set of rules although still going to be funky and how they skirt around some of those rules in the roster being at 28 it'll flick in the left field and abduction in four days cities update for the second time tonight [Applause] and even if that is the case John getting back to the September of next year it will be significantly better than what we've seen in recent years yes it will unless they find a way that not close some of the loopholes that might exist from who you can designate who you can't but that'll be for next year too and the reason I'm saying is let's just say they say you can't does can't deactivate your four other starters that are not pitching that day some clubs are say oh that guy's not a starter for us because they use a lot of different pictures to start games time will tell how they address that but 28 versus the 40 that are available right now a step in the right direction two outs Molina at first base for Matt Carpenter having a really terrific month of September [Music] ken do you have anything to add on September Oh 20 well former Brewers DM Doug Melvin was one of the leading advocates perhaps the leading advocate of getting rid of the 40-man roster in September and of course what has happened the Brewers have put it to great advantage the past two seasons and this week Doug Melvin was talking to Craig Counsell in his office in Council said hey what are you doing this has been great for us well most everyone in the sport thinks it's a really good idea to get down to 28 I'd say so and very Council on the Brewers have to have fantastic September's they'll have to find a different way and fill everybody else same situation two strikes now they move everybody over pretty much and leave the entire left side where properly to try to bunt with two strikes and recorded a K there you see it carpenter the fifth most shifted hitter in baseball grandma this one extreme not as Extreme as the Rangers employed against the Red Sox when Borland was at the plate for outfielders and nobody on the left side of the infield no was it the Rangers or the Rangers of these Rangers Phelps getting loose inside the Cubs pen we see that from time to time but it's rare where it's Joey Gallo speaking to the Rangers he's had some interest in ships put on against him no ship needed here Hamill strikes out his eighth batter through four scoreless innings has been supreme we go to the fifth floor believes off the top of the fifth for the Cubs looks like Cole Hamels might be done for the day or his pitch from Wainwright missing ball one sure for the first pitch that he sought from Wainwright tonight parked over the right-field fence that'd be tough to leave after for like that when you're striking out eight batters through four scoreless and you're one away from one with a you know away from the wind potentially now how much do you think factors in we look at the pitch count for Hamels he's at 67 he had his last start skipped because of shoulder fatigue now this is his last start of the year offseason so you're saying he would be ok yeah takes down schwöre burr at the plate I've missed the pad or the shin guard where you think this next pitch is going to be I mean dirty pool goes right back in there right I know what are you gonna start reading promos now and I'm gonna start calling pitches you know if he could sneak a promo and every once in LA I would appreciate it I haven't dipped my bonuses yet this year he missed the Smackdown two one towards a shift stared at men and put you in a bit put off the bag what an effort though by the rookie in shallow right he makes a great play get into it and tries his best to get rid of it in all one motion as he turns over and makes the transfer heck of an effort now I have a question for you is that an infield single No just for regular single it's a single I think infield starts to be on the infield I still think it represents the dirt well half a homerun in last night's game a homerun tonight as well and we looked at it through the lens of statcast AI powered by EWS this was absolutely crushed yeah pitcher knows hitter knows right away if it's the one you don't know what leaves the bat that drives you crazy that one gave the Cubs their three nothing lead that they currently have right here 107 off the bat for happened have feasted on Cardinals pitching both this year and in his young career carrying out to left Ozuna half the opposite away with wide his second home run tonight [Applause] he has driven in four of the Cubs five runs [Applause] were you the same something about homeruns that you weren't sure if they would get out of here off the bat yeah that's been a theme this year at ball straddling a little bit farther than most people think makes a good swing and other pitch that you don't see hitters kind of get leaked out there and be able to serve it over the fence but that's been the theme this year that's caused a lot of people to shake their hats but a hitter I'll tell you he's just strong and there are a lot of strong hitters well this is certainly not what the Cardinals were expecting from Adam Wainwright who was pitched so magnificently at home this year and in September Dominic Leone any loose inside the Cardinals bullpen that's kind of amazing seven days or so ago you know the Cubs only hope was of winning a division was taking care of the Cardinals they had seven games when they lost all four I mean I don't think anybody thought that the vision was even going to be in question when the Cardinals ran off that sweet but Milwaukee had different plans Milwaukee's only lost three times in the last 20 or so days and that has caused a little bit of tension here in st. Louis because I think you know winning a division is way more important than having to be forced into a one game yet a lone divisional playoff game or a one game wildcard with mr. Scherzer and the Washington Nationals waiting now the Brewers right now scoreless in the third from Coors Field the Cardinals win tonight and a Brewers lost tonight would give the Cardinals the division a long way from that though the 3m - I'm Luke boiling you know coming into the series I thought there was a huge dilemma for the Milwaukee Brewers and what I mean by that is you felt like they would have to win all three and more than likely let's say the Cardinals win two out of three and you're looking at a playoff game well how many resources do you utilize if you're the Milwaukee Brewers to try to get to that point because the loser is going to have to turn around and play a game in a wild card scenario and then you've really exhausted some of those weapons and then of course as this game plays on if the Cardinals have a decision to make if they lose and let's say two scenarios let's just say Milwaukee loses they got a one game lead Jack flared he could go to Marv you wait to pitch jack Larry I think it's a no-brainer if if they're tied going into tomorrow Jack clarity will pitch but if they're one game up what do you do if you're the Cardinals Ozuna makes this number one when we begin the game John talking about the rotation for the Cardinals first half - second half how they've had the best starters er a since the all-star break and the earned run average speaks for itself but how about homeruns pranaya that is a big time shaved and homers for nine innings by these Cardinal starters in the first half of the season from the second half of the season now and with that in mind Wainwright has given up three home runs tonight for the first time all year first time since last June [Applause] bombs away for the bomb squad tonight for the Chicago Cubs Victor carotene II is 11 [Applause] for 34 this breaking ball or cutter if you will did not get enough inside and carotene who's having a nice year for the Cubs and a schwarber one of the four homeruns or ball strike two Russell they bring up a good question as to what my kilt will do tomorrow depending on the outcome of this game we have already talked to Jack Flaherty tonight Ken now what are your thoughts on this Mike still told us before the game there is a strong possibility that the Cardinals will use Flaherty if the division is on the line in some fashion here's the problem let's say the Cardinals lose tomorrow and then they go into a scenario where there's a tiebreaker and there's no Jack flower then they lose that game and they're in the wild-card then there's no jack clarity now if you win tomorrow with flour tea you have them available for Game two of the division series but all these scenarios John they're complicated and they're troubling because you've got one ace and the question is when do you best deploy him yeah there's no doubt that the wheels are spinning they never thought they'd be in this position when you think about what they did leading into this weekend and really what the lineup that the Cubs because of their regulars being banged up weren't in the lineup another base hit and has been a hit parade for these Cubs second date tonight for Addison Russell that's it for Wainwright six runs a dozen hits going four and a third and a huge start tonight for the veteran a disappointing outcome for the Cardinals and for Adam white right Dominic Leone tena Dom will inherit a man the one out of the top of the fifth all clubs tonight right handed Dominic Leone is on the bound to pitch for the Cardinals here in the fifth inning six nothing Cubs they've hit four homers pitch strike to David Bodi four seamer cutter slider sinker and rarely used changeup he's gonna rely on those four pitches but primarily the four seamer and the cutter share the equal usage [Music] well they only had a bit of a scare earlier today when his number one ranked Clemson Tigers nearly were upset Chapel Hill Clemson hanging on for the win meanwhile for that man Adam Wainwright tonight the first time in his career this is his 14th big league season the fourth time the first time he's ever given up four home runs in a game so I'll flick into right field Fowler plenty of time for a number two back to Los Angeles an update with Mike Hill and injured last night thank you Mike it was Daniel Descalso batting for the pitcher these fans last night had a tight ballgame and then the Cubs broke it open in a exhausting kind of sixth inning if you will and so far this crowd has been taken out of this ballgame and a lot of concern I'm sure is looming over these Cardinals fans as to what lies ahead in their route to either getting a chance to play the Atlanta Braves will it be clean or will they have to go through two games or one game still a number of possibilities the game 163 will they play the wild card obviously it changes the team it's either the Braves or the Dodgers on the scout Seoul commenced on the swing he strikes out that these Cubs home runs he get half his second the opposite away then Victor carotene he over 430 feet with his bomb car Cubs lead the cards six nothing to sponsored by guide save you 15% or more on car insurance [Music] Cubs leading 6-nothing with a dozen heads Cole Hamels spending four scoreless a ton of strikeouts along the way Cal Ryan up Tanner up on the mound fires first pitch strike to Paul to young [Music] so bad and really liked what Cal Ryan was doing for him and funky left-hander it really had to mix and match their bullpen use a lot of different pieces try to get to this point in the season course some of them did not work out but bullpen battle and I'll Ryan a really good ground ball pitcher down on strikes let's shaft first champ as Errol the truth Spence jr. takes on Showtime on Shawn Porter in a world championship unification bout at Staples Center plus campus champion Anthony Durrell defends his title against David Benavidez tonight it starts at 9:00 Eastern 6:00 Pacific live on pay-per-view or order now on the Fox Sports app we had a telestrator I would have seen that extra Abby had in there you see that that was unbelievable it wasn't a six pack though I was possible trying to figure out pronunciations while you were looking at that screen to know but I you described it well enough well as the season comes to a close for the Cubs there could be a lot of discussion and I still think it's going to work out for them by the way the signing of Craig Kimbrel did not exactly work out this year but given the fact that he gets back he's healthy and full-year Craig Kimbrel I think will pay dividends but you know Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel were out there for the longest time Horsley Braves went out got Dallas Keuchel and it's paid off dividends for them and then the Cubs with their bullpen situation got Craig Kimbrel and unfortunately for the Cubs that did not go according to plan other people on the north side who are already lamenting that Kimbrel deal how much do you think that a normal spring training will impact him in a positive way over the next couple of years I think it would be huge driven deep out to lap this is God in a bull pen the receiving end of Harrison Peters 12 home run this year caracals out pork [Applause] well metal-metal usually gets it done for the hitters there's the swing and one of the deeper parts of the park [Applause] Tyler O'Neill wolf batter the pitchers spot some signs of life to the Cardinals let's play here in the bottom of the fifth you feel like that tricep pads gonna bust off the velcro all the ways exactly I see your point and I believe it's a special I think the the spandex in that right sleeve [Music] his father was a former bodybuilder former mr. universe I would say he taught his son a thing or two it's incredible you look at the Sprint metrics for Tyler O'Neill by the way and he can really pedal look at him thinking that he would just be a masher and of course what he's known for the most but he could move coming up in the Mariners system then being traded over to st. Louis Marco Gonzalez going from the Cardinals to Seattle after Tommy John the bolts of two francs I noticed that you did not notice his high socks with everything else now I didn't well I don't like where he's smiling so much Johnny this is not there were smiles like oh happy to see you then there were smiles like I got something on this guy no no it's guys or see do you see this see that planet that's not a good smile I was just thinking what would what it would take me to look like that that's all that's all sticking like water would take how far could I hit a golf ball you have any tats I dunno americo's curious well count I mean like what's the protein intake look like is it two grams per body weight pound we're talking here I mean how many pull-ups [Music] well as we admire Tyler O'Neill the calendar turns and the accent sub-bands baseball's brightest young stars take center stage major league baseball postseason begins Tuesday go to mlb.com slash postseason for the full schedule Dexter Fowler old for two I'll run in for the Carnales a man on with one out father likes the fastball wonders he'll be on go here if the first pitch is a fastball [Music] now on the other end of this rivalry now part of that captain World Series team as a dynamic force at the top of the order for Chicago [Music] one thing the Cardinals do that is not popular with all of baseball's they will take some bases they will try to steal some bases I never look that way O'Neil with just one bag on the year that's the one he just ripped off the spike took like there was nothing I just mopped I want to now there's been a struggle last 12 times out against the Cubs for Dexter Fowler [Music] Fowler still two more years of a contract with the Cardinals now ponce de leon has been warming up he's ready to go and appeal he does not go to and to [Music] I find it always interesting and how the season winds down as you look towards the finish line like you're getting ready to they know they're gonna be in the playoffs but what part of the playoffs will be the divisional winner will it be a playoff game and then you got teams that clinch and go the other way and rest their players and kind of you know they just don't play the same kind of baseball and people always ask is it better to get in by the seat of your pants on fire and just keep rolling or is it better to set up your team and have the four days off for some teams before their playoff game I always liked as a pitcher the freedom of my last start before my post season to do whatever I wanted to do to get ready for certain things to plant certain you know their scouting to plant certain things to play in my head how I want to prepare for that next start which is going to be that total different season that postseason started would you do something contrarian because he knew that they were scouting yeah absolutely soft flyball near the line and right field and foul but the point I was gonna make what's got to be confusing is for Jack Flaherty right now he's sitting watching a game is he preparing to pitch tomorrow is he not you know those kind of playoff type games and adrenaline he would love to have for that very first game that if they win the division he'll be against the Atlanta Braves if he doesn't pitch tomorrow all those different emotions gets like starting pitching in a perfect world in a regular season you get nothing to worry about the day before you piss as you know you routine you played against the power he's one to give it up all her if it Phelps's been warming in 92 in the postseason we were up three games to one Joe Maddon's coming out is more likely to finish this later but I in my mind will already get ready for Game one of the World Series unfortunately we didn't win another game and had to go to Game seven that was put in a position to pitch Game seven Joe's got some words for a home plate umpire tonight fielding Culbreath still looking that way well Cole Hamels was getting this pitch but that one wasn't as close as it may appeared Richard changed one out two on cups covenant feeling helpless and I'm trying to continue doing that great book buzzer trees exchanged and nothing coming of it st. Louis sky David Phelps this town is up all about there's bits missing why'd admin they may not have all their regulars in their lineup but Jill Madden is gonna be using a bunch of these relievers the rest of the way to try to get this victory or it's Kris Bryant one of the many regulars that have essentially been shut down for the rest of the season ankle injury from Bryan Phelps has the evenly distributed amount of pitches that he uses the cutter curveball the four seamer all right around 25% and the sinker at 17% see too many pitchers with that kind of ability to use all those pitches the same percentage I seen em to make it two and one this crowd has been subdued of course by the Cubs power their 6-1 lead they're looking for something they're looking for a big hit capacity crowd to get themselves excited about what this weekend had in store for a celebration the divisional championship on hold Tommy Edmund the rookie out of stanford a switch-hitter now facing a writing scene his splits he taught himself how to switch it while playing wiffle ball as a kid [Applause] he scores here Julie Tommy [Applause] it just continues to the lever in this final month of the regular season oh there's the big head there's the crowd now back in it a contact play after this triple and they get to a two runs down but talked about his runners in scoring percentage average is pretty high coming into this game that it just went up [Applause] he's slinging a miss knee high fastball to goldsmith he'd be more of a throwback to the Cardinals of old you know where a little bit of power of a gap Tibet gap hitter good speed more they were not fun to pitch to Fred Minh looks like that backyard little ball session as a kid paid off so who are they what made them so uncomfortably fast you know they weren't going to swing and miss a lot and then when they got a base that we're gonna have your attention Tommy heard days Terry parents and we're in the key I mean they Coleman don't know if we'll ever see that again we're gonna see some blending coming back in the game of some speed I really believe you'll see some of that come back but why were they tough on that beat pitch plate appearance by Dexter Fowler so big here Brian that was his final batter two on with one out there's a home run two sitting by Bader as well we've got things going Tacey two outs that's a big strikeout right there I'm characteristically of Paul Goltz that a good strikeout by Phelps he went down when he was trying to go in but he got the result he wanted that's a big out they were conceding a-runnin any contact at any base other than the pitcher back to the pitcher the Cardinals were going to daughter with him - now they need a two-out hit by Ozuna [Music] nothing here one two Marcel Ozuna a home lunch time number 30 David Phelps born in Saint Louis to high school that Hazelwood high not far from here in Florissant and on to pitch in college in South Bend the Irish Asuna has seen me approach at the plate you see the bad almost vertical straight up and down but he keeps the bat through the zone when he's locked in he has that bat go through the zone in such a flat angle that he can get hot obviously with power and damage Center cut caught yes in there I would imagine [Music] I'm a crooked number this inning for the Cardinals and we're shut up by Hamels over four innings they put three across against this caps bolt then [Applause] against the wall what a play by jumping jam Cardinals get on the board this inning however Harrison Bader is 12th up the year and then how about the rookie - one triple six three cups [Applause] the camping light-filled John it's a great cats right about there I didn't think he was going to get it and then he turns around a CLE and adjusts right before the wall a big out where the momentum will start dude happened for this crowd in st. Louis the camp the product of a massive baseball factory Vanderbilt he was an infielder there as played the outfield now in his big league career only his fourth start however tonight in right field Oh on a strength counter web up on the mound for the Cardinals palma two strikes up into this little run of three in a row that the Cardinals have lost they became and in my mind still a dangerous team because their pitching is getting contagious meaning their starters their ride in a hot hand and a couple guys in the front of that rotation their bullpen is sneaky good I don't think they get enough credit they've got guys that can get it done and pitch multiple innings they don't have your prototypical closer Martinez has filled in as that guy but Gant I a goes of course Andrew Miller they picked up pop straight-up Molina making sure everybody stays clear one away tonight's telecast is sponsored by IBM let's put smart to work and by Miller Lite great taste Japan only 96 calories Eric Thames with a solo blast for the brew crew they lead one-nothing in the fifth there how many pitchers are gonna pitch in that game speaking of which we set the all-time record this past week most pitchers combined in a game here to guess how many that one tonight ending in fader Flags it down Dexter inning oh yes now was this that was this in the Cardinals diamond back in nineteen inning no oh this was it oh it doesn't need xanthine and the Red Sox yeah I do want to take a guess with this let's see that was John there were this this the gate the series this series is the Rockies and the Giants went 16 innings for a three-game series we set the record for most pitchers used modern day it's no wait a second here throwing which one of my answer well most in one game and then most in a series most in one game John was 26 good guess 25 and was broken just earlier by 24 49 in 3 3 game series 49 pitchers 49 you're singing that time two outs nobody on for sure ever p.m. you were talking about with 16 pictures I believe between the Red Sox and San Francisco my crazy brain remembers correctly that was nine innings something like that that pitch usually yadi gets and that was in the Box in the corner Ozuna chasey Ned al ball well schwöre burt obviously has the power average has come up a little bit learning to play left-field I didn't see him as just an all power guide no average I saw him as a guy that was going to flirt with to 80 to 70 his down on strikes here Rav retires a sided order out of the bottom of the six counts by three [Applause] belts back up on the mound first pitch strike to Molina Molina on base twice hit by pitch and a single he rarely watched he rarely strikes out chop off the plate 2/3 voting potential runnings got some time one away and the post-season chase every play matters and the MLB at bat delivers of live baseball on your favorite devices follow the race for the postseason clinches with pitch tracking video highlights up to the moment standings and a lot more you can download MLB at bat today carpenter tonight over to a couple of strikeouts a home run at last night's game he's having a good September about a 400 on-base about a 500 slugging overall to the tough year for carpenter Newports long stretch last year was playing like an MVP yeah he definitely had to go find this swing set down a couple times just to be real it was a rough stretch he went through and they're gonna need him to continue to stay hot it's been put flexing a little bit if you're a Cardinal fan I'm sure with the offense that swings on you know their swings as far as the runs they score and then they don't score it's kind of been Anila in between month pitchers have kind of hit a little bit going on with the streakiness to the offense the one two statcast AI powered by AWS [Music] pretty heavy on the right side Bodie is now over from third base Russell is back over deep short [Music] why do we see that with two stripes well it eliminates the theory of bunting that's why carpenter tried bunting when two strikes the amazing thing about this is if you literally practiced it and just square it around to bunt the ball anywhere over there there's nothing they could do but it's just something guys this don't feel comfortable with two strikes are comfortable working on third strike down for carpenter with gentle just talking about a little bit of an up and down an offense feast or famine for these Redbirds particularly this month what say you the Cardinals are really strong with their pitching really strong defensively but their offense with the addition of Paul Goldsmith and the lively ball is actually down a tick from last year ranking 11th in the National League and runs per game one reason is that Busch Stadium has played very much like a pitcher's Park this season benefiting their starting pitchers in particular but offensively it is really hurt than their 12th in the NL in homers at home tied for fourth on the road one of those perplexing things and it just has not gotten going from an offensive standpoint when you look at all the teams that are of course punched their ticket to the postseason this is the least potent lineup least homeruns lowest slugging and go down the list but they've certainly have their strengths they've been elite fielding the ball like the turnaround from last year they led all of baseball in errors a season ago mister they've committed the fewest no team has ever done that go from worst to first one at two with largely the same personnel and on Goldsman in there for his bass Mike Shildt was calling him an anchor in many ways and we asked him how this turned around that you can see has happened this year is a huge swing kolten Wong getting the confidence of his new manager which is parlayed and success for him as a player this year currently trying to get back on the field from a hamstring injury he's sustained but that confidence playing form in the minors and then really the thought that he would be at kind of an everyday player has worked out well for Colt long this year and offensively he's been one of the better hitters in the second half as well they could definitely use him back and healthy he has Gold Glove caliber at second two outs two balls and two strikes to the young so summerlee ER today Cole Diwan taking some grounders trying to that hamstring better of course so much of it John how you feel the next day right yeah I just can you go through the paces day up really it's hard to simulate anything of gain action until you get into game actually it's amazing simulated game and you're throwing to even your own hitters try to put yourself in a situation of a game it's not the same - you can get out there and feel the efforts of that action you think you're doing good coming back the stresses of a game are so far more played out than than anything you can create in your mind practicing back down to Ken the Cardinals thought walking looked really good moving around in the field today but the question is John alluded to there is when do you playing when do you go knowing that if he reaches that hamstring he might be lost for the playoffs to her tricky decision our host could have a couple of those coming up another two two like the play-doh parents being put together here by the young that's which will be the eight eight or a home run his last time up he Sunday the payoff hesitated in words it found if you see the cue ball shot base hit that the young hat a couple of weeks ago oh my gosh I don't think I've seen a rout like that I mean it's like bullying a strike when it almost goes in the gutter than you have it's all ten down as it went over towards the coach's box at first base and came back in fare and credited the young mr. Phelps seems like it still trying to get on the same page Lucroy him the young was breaking out of the box all the way gotta pace it out otherwise he's out here comes the ninth pitch channel left Russell Tim the inning Phelps retires decided or will get onto this seven caps happily [Music] swinging strike one the e'en half what a ballgame for the cup centerfielder tonight three for three a couple of home runs he's driven in for the six for the Cubs tonight about those home runs for having wow this one this one was crushed this one I think surprised everybody especially Adam Wainwright lasted to Center Bader has space right by the 400 marker allowed out number one a glance at tempered the base is sponsored by State Farm of course history being set these numbers coming into this evening single-season home run record around baseball thirteen teams setting a new single-season franchise homerun record and thirty excuse me fifty six players with at least 30 home runs since the most ever in a single year no it's amazing with the outbursts of all these home run records really makes you appreciate when you go back in time like Roger Maris 61 months no one's got 60 in an era where there's never been more hit right a lot more at 30 couple maybe at 50 before the year's end a lot more strikeouts though you know when you're not putting in play as much certainly that cuts down on the opportunity to hit that many Lucroy and the gap fader has it [Applause] I'll have a quick programming update unfortunately and sling have dropped many Fox stations including fs1 meaning you won't be able to watch the MLB playoffs starting this Friday on fs1 to make sure you have a chance to make other plans to see all the MLB playoff games you love so much call or visit the website seen right here for the latest info you're a teeny on the ground give me the carpenter let's say very quick anxiety top to settle seven pitches three athletes rest [Music] name summary leaving six to three handles or spaulos innings with eight strikeouts half of course having a monster not a couple of home runs Wainwright a career-high 12 hits and four homers allowed had never done either of those until tonight Cole Hamels and his final tuneup before hitting the open market for free agency an emic played for the game presented by an Hankook Tire he was on point all night long for four innings he's really good to glove side mixed in his changeup had every pitch working and when you strike out eight that's usually the case and this season will end on a good note another big lefty for the Cubs coming in throwing a lot of fast balls and one that clips Bader out of its dark bradwick assball takes it off the tricep bicep area and that's what the cartons are gonna be they're gonna need to get some baserunners to get things going here [Music] fastball slider curved those are the three pitches rondell rubella a will pick up a bat hit in the pitcher spot O'Neal pitch hit earlier and now Ravello ball one [Music] [Music] Brewers up two to nothing if the scoreboard is right I guarantee you their scoreboard watching Colorado they were saying something about the scoreboard being around town yeah what nothing now to the backstop bader plenty of speed he waltzes in a second it took the runaway thug the runaway challenge play so the school board was technically right once - nothing for a brief period of time but the Eric Thames home run remains the only run scored in that game that's what I was looking at why I put the disclaimer what a professional two balls and a strike to Ravello now Bader and scoring position took its time getting home missing hi too bad this big fella didn't have a longer name because his back would certainly support it it's he is coming after you you saying you could fit Saltalamacchia back easily look at that room for rent on the back six foot nine Amarillo Texas picking Amarillo proud [Applause] something LaMacchia remains the longest last name at baseball history none of me [Music] Bhoja hausky threatened him this year Walter Neff which is getting close but it's more intimidating just to look at once you work your way through it unless it's not that bad Scrabble dream right there let's mark cept in ski that is to Carl stands remember him Tony LaRussa never was quite able to say Sachin skis last name correctly was in ski [Music] well silent letters there as Balor is on deck Kinski one of the make good lefties in the league for some time bader at second base nobody out Arnel trying to make some noise tanka Joe Matt and always always picking his brain seen what he's looking at in the future what he's like to work on year to year and one of the things I thought he said interesting it doesn't apply here but it applies when his team's at the bat winning the three two counts he said this year we did not do a good job winning the three two counts it's considered neutral but he felt like his team got too aggressive and expanded the zone a little bit three two pits you know [Applause] off the bench patient played appearance he gets paid off with it here comes Tommy Hanabi first year pitching coach to the Cubs yesterday's game between these two teams absolutely hit the halt button between the sixth and seventh inning so you see there's a blueprint for this well it was a good blueprint for the Cubs what the Cardinals would like is that long inning to go in their favor now three run fifth inning for the Cardinals tonight and now Dexter Fowler representing the tying run in the old days it wouldn't be out of the question they'd even get a bunt here down by three but the out that's valued in today's game more than likely won't see a bunt when you think about crawling closer putting some runs on the board second and third one out they just don't value that as much as they just want hitters swinging away and he swings away for strike one [Music] Fowler is switch-hitter there's three home runs from the right side [Applause] first and second nobody out bottom seven sells well wide [Music] where's the lineup starts to get thick after Fowler at men who as a two-run triple tonight Goldschmidt amid Ozuna [Applause] do it a lot on the year the wick has had good success against right-handers with his fastball curveball combination not as much with his slider he's seeing he's havin a hard time getting the top of his own with that fastball and then he could follow it up with a curveball good breaking curveball but he's missed more with that pitch in this inning - one - Fowler will not close son sees warming up [Music] you know you think at six foot nine it'd be easier for a guy to go downhill at six nine not so much lot more moving parts but at six nine the theory is going downhill over the top the ball should get on the hitter quickly all 47,000 nearly on their feet now [Applause] pit's looks so enticing 3-1 count you really have to be disciplined to get the ball down in the zone where you like it this one was out of his hand and he was swinging trying to get that fastball on top of his own but above it and now another 3-2 count here as we go back with the high fastball or he's spin that breaking ball of it he has confidence with tying run at the plate bottom seven the payoff he does not go back back I'll tell you what that'd have been tough for me as a pitcher to see that kind of movement and then see the umpire say he didn't go but the Cardinals have something cookin here big-time [Applause] see check has been warming he will inherit a mess Edmond coming on bases-loaded nobody out deep-sea check about the finish the last pitch he threw awfully close live but a much better job when we see the replay this angle will tell you how close it is [Applause] [Music] deep sea check veteran right hand around the mouth [Music] [Applause] go ahead run at the plate admin swing it away thank you back to mid-july Cardinals at red sixth inning score tied at three Tommy Edmund his first career grand slam in the Cardinals a 7-3 lead that ate his one and only grand slam he has tripled already tonight grope into the cardinal three [Applause] Vader is in the store just continues to head Cardinals have been to great base running by everybody on the base this was going to be a close and the angle of Dexter Fowler was great because he could see it straight on as schwarber was coming in you couldn't assume it wasn't going to be caught we see this bought him this is a great angle and his short hops schwarber but Tommy goes to second to throw for possibly a forceout Fowler standing on the bag [Applause] now 15 ribbies this month for the rookie admin second on the team of the man and the batter's box right now Goldschmidt and played a third step on the bag and throw out of first Ravel crosses it's a one-run game on they took to to give up one it looked like Bodie could have come home but they wouldn't have turned to if he came home so you'll always trade two outs I guess here in this situation you see him come up with he could easily come home he looked but then decided to throw to first after he touched the bag of course if he comes home after touching the bag it's no longer a force play and the tag would have had to been made but now the Cardinals got within one two out RBI is what they're looking for for this place to absolutely go crazy and tie the game up with two outs good speed second and Evan which fit to Ozuna lays off ball one [Applause] [Applause] go ahead and run at the plate with pop doing nothing a Cardinals win tonight and a Brewers loss in Denver gives the Cardinals the Division [Applause] but to all whatever happens in this game and certainly wherever the Cardinals go to play their first playoff game they're going to need Ozuna to get back locked in when you think about going through the top of their lineup and you get a more locked in as Oona and Paul Goldschmidt it starts making a little more stress on the opposing pitchers [Applause] three balls in a strike [Music] melina would be next [Music] [Applause] [Applause] how's the granite back face open he understood that how he was going to be pitched and he never on any one of those breaking ball now here's where Molina in the past you're always two or three at-bats take and he'll pick one at-bat with he'll come out looking aggressive on one pitch on the first pitch will that be now after Ozuna just walked dangerous in this situation on the first pitch Jan Scotty at Sanford Stadium [Applause] sends it to centre-half with space to end the threat two runs come in two runners aren't left stranded Cardinals making plenty of noise they scored five unanswered runs we've played at seventh one-run game fire all forms of baseball and softball participation making play opportunities available and fun for everyone to find a youth organization near you all you have to do is go play ball or well we've got a ball game 6-5 Cubs still leading as we turn the page to the top of the 8th inning the bearded John rabiyah is up on the mound Rocklin Addison Russell quickly on to the golf balls you think you can get in there sorry three a little hairball does that maybe I mean at least ten yeah that's how I measure beers I'm rep you have to leave the league right Blackmon it's a picture for the Rockies oh man he's got a he's got a good beer whatever the Blackman I think so maybe that could be in Mike Hills next update from Denver text lane fouled back or saw lies here when not watching the field they are looking at the out-of-town scoreboard monitoring the Brewers at the Rockies if the Carnales can come from behind and if the rockies can also come from behind and take down the Brewers and Cardinals in window central and the Brewers since we last look at the scoreboard they've just added a run I promise we're not taking any wind out of my sails back in Los Angeles he has an update of a different variety that called rebby is to to pinch I did get some hit some help with this but Yukon kornelius in the abominable snowman now I need to know I don't want to know the answer I want to know I want to know how you phrase the question to the truck and you press that little talkback button I I asked him for the name yeah but how did you ask in the abdominal snowman and the Rudolph the red-nose a [Applause] play by Addison Russell fan by Tommy Edmund this was a pretty good play the speed of Russell of course is going to be the only thing that kept Edmund to make him the play and don't know that he needed the headfirst slide but he went ahead with the headfirst slide always a risky proposition the first at-bat has had now to nip these snares in see how the right-field that couldn't make the throw on because it's so much range Rock what a Bodhi [Applause] it was all cobs early tonight they had four home runs before the end of the fifth Lana scored since that's a tough night last night for Andrew Miller is warming up bori not agreeing with that call you can see a touch above one it to little bit up Vijay Johnson by chance the bearded rocky yeah I mean not quite as impressive as was it again Yukon kornelius now the tone in your voice almost makes sound like you expect me to know that or were you just emphasizing it for yourself I forgot the hug wouldn't know that public count I made a statement last week with Joe Davis that I took a risk when he said that's a throwback to the 90s we were making reference to some kind of play and I said you mean like Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo assumed that he would know you young guys I don't get anything for Neil Giraldo yeah you do you do actually I mean why do I have to press you in order to get credit because when I earn Neil Giraldo right there you did I didn't know if you got that in your head side or if you just came up with that in your own where's the trust in this partnership but never take credit for something that great you didn't know what chutes and ladders boys I know the app okay - on hey give you a break from this let's send you out to Los Angeles Mike Hill a game break [Music] he will fly by me or is the Ryan Express at the top Sabathia joining that elite club earlier this year or whatever lefty I changed for the Cubs looked like it was gonna be Zil forest up around Mora wonder if Almora is there to show us the rare bunt Maddox is going to go out to discuss some either how they want to defend it or how they want to pitch to this situation here the MLB postseason begins Tuesday with the NL wildcard on TBS and Wednesday with American League wildcard on ESPN then on Friday the American League Division Series begins on fs1 and the Fox Sports out Astros Yankees twins division winners Braves and A's the wild-card by the way who gets your American links I am A Berliner by I mean but it knows like it's one of the most amazing duel it's similar to Wainwright carpenter when they nosed each other out Lincecum came down with the sayang this is about as close as it's going to get that is two dominating pitchers on one staff that somebody's going to have to deal with come five days from now [Applause] those numbers predated Verlander start this evening at eight more to that list strikeouts that is popped up Rabiya easy play around the breadbasket lady called the button wow the pun but it was more like a punt that you would think he's trying to punt for bass hit it and that's the one area that it's just such a missed art in our game because guys just don't value it and teams don't value and don't practice it the right way watch how he punts and he's trying to get it down the third baseline and run at the same time it truly needed to be a sacrifice and he see him dropped the barrel the bat to try to angle it to third and that caused the pop up Andrew Miller is warmed and ready one out two on forever you down for the evening we've got a pitching change in a one-run ain't binning Andrew Miller who at a rough one last night charged with four runs third of an inning on the mound here inheriting two with one away facing the leadoff man Tony Kemp and play and interact here Russell rounding on his way home he scores and in the clouds get a huge run back 7 5 Chicago [Applause] well it just doesn't have the tight slider working the way that he has become so known for that nasty slider this one rolls over the middle of the plate Kent does a nice job staying in there just getting it out of the reach of Edmund and of course a huge run Russell leads it great speed now the Cardinals are looking at signing hold it to just two runs here they need a ground ball or a strike out the infield is going to play in andrew Millican it's in a tough September for Andrew Miller guys and they have to have some concern going into the postseason this month eight point six eight er a he's one of several Cardinals relievers who has not been all that good in September he's gonna post season staple of course he's pitching the playoff the last five years had yet to win a ring last year really marred by hamstring mean also a shoulder injury and you just wonder again when everybody loves the super reliever everybody loves the guy that can go in any situation certainly that's what he did for the Cleveland Indians and he hasn't really been the same since it takes a toll and he was in so many tough games and asked to do us so much for the Cleveland Indians and he was valuable but his usage in just the way that he hasn't been able to really bounce back people don't understand having never done that role what that does to a body and what it does in a given year and a left field Ozuna making the catch bori tags coming home sacrifice fly to left field it's an eight-five cops leaders who send you back to LA in my kill now Lorenzo Cain is he the best acted defender not to win a Gold Glove oh absolutely I'm shocked I just assumed he happened forever with camp at first two runs in this city for the Cubs believe it was in der inciarte who wanted last year but actually yeah you're right with the Braves it's another good one but on that topic with relievers in the usage and you just see year-to-year the bullpens this year the yaar a collectively I think so much higher as a whole in baseball just because you have this knowledge to be able to piece the game together and use more guys I just don't know the long-term effect of what it has on certain ball clubs and certain players because we don't see a lot of with the exception of a couple closers you just don't see anybody stay locked in for more than two or three years when they are used at that high rate and essentially a volatile position and that might be one of the main reasons camp taking off so I'm gonna message the strike three two one what's in your wallet tubs get two runs and extended lead eight to five as we move to the bottom of the echo stroke is up on the bow or Jill madam watch for him too quick pitch with nobody on he has different ways to disrupt the timing of the hitter there's the normal pause and there'll be times where he doesn't cause he goes quickly especially if he has the count in his favor every once in a while he could lose the strike zone as the RA is higher than they would like he has some electric stuff when he's on Darvin are trying to avoid the sombrero tonight he is open three with three strikeouts to the one now the temples are going that traditional two-strike approach were there signs of anybody pretty much for the pitching mound over [Music] brewers continued elite to nothing Cardinals trailing in the bottom of the 8th Wainwright giving up 4 home runs tonight for the first time in his career no foul ball so much going on really if this game holds form what do the Cardinals decide I would think that if they lose this game in Milwaukee wins it would be Jeff clarity on the mound tomorrow but it would definitely put both teams in an interesting scenario as they would try to play a game 163 if they remain tied for the division and have a 163 for the second straight year st. Louis holds that edge of where that game would be maybe right here on Monday the carpenter about to see his ninth hitch it's kind of playing out purely similar to last year with the Milwaukee Brewers forced into action another foul well to have it in consecutive years is one thing to have it in the same division and back-to-back years is a whole nother level which could happen the tenth pitch appeal he goes carpenter now learning that news [Applause] [Music] he did [Music] one out nobody on Paul too young about this 71 and sixty-eight fairly over 500 on the early days of September 7 a halfback in the central five back of the wild card they lost Yelich the reigning MVP on the 10th they've gone on to when 18 of 21 games pretty amazing and has been incredible now the schedule has helped him out a little more perspective Kent what do you think schedule has helped but they had to play all the more difficult opponents early on so it all balances out but their performance the last two september's is highly memorable last to September's their record 39 and 12 Lorenzo Cain defensive hero tonight who's playing hurt has been an inspirational number 32 the Redbirds shortstop do again puts the foot down and smokes it strong and a guy who is responsible for to put back sighs now the big ass there is Bader who homered earlier [Music] [Music] [Applause] Vader got caught right there with the quick tips you could do that with nobody on [Applause] very close [Applause] this one look like it might have caught a corner [Applause] foul ball over to Lori endure temperatures fall I was in my tunas working on some breathing exercises waiting on death Tubbs getting two runs in the top of this eight Cardinals have gotten one back down the DeYoung home run later abort reach into the third time [Applause] [Music] and honestly somebody to go to right here mr. Martinez time the steps in the box - before that throwing up that late chicken you can hear [Music] that's not going right Cardinals offense waking up in the back half of this game reruns of the fit [Music] to live a second [Music] the body of the wife a lot of movement in Martinez when he's ready to go that bats going to be moving everything's moving he's trying to time up everything for when the pitch comes across to the plate [Applause] is there anything you do on the mountain to exploit that well the biggest thing is you got to make a pitch look like a strike and never throw a strike to me he wants to hit and you just got to give the illusion on a breaking ball on the outer part of the plate [Applause] how is like guys no matter how much they could smoke a baseball I wanted a hit and I wanted them aggressive and then using that aggression to your advantage by throwing the pics of malaria to get into swing by Kinsler warming [Applause] tying run at the plate with the Cardinals [Applause] he missed his pitch Wow and he knows it Wow [Music] this one he had visions of tying it up this thing spun over the plate and I'm telling you that's one of those that if it broke the way it was supposed to right have been a tie game that actually backed up and stayed on the inner half good speed at first base I'm gone [Applause] I want to Araya big pitch bite stroke two outs he got caught casting and throwing a bunch of breaking balls here's the pitch by pitch to get in the fastball in the beginning down below and then he threw a little cutter slider and then another breaking ball and just missed it and then just locked him up with fastball taught me how to be pitching coach a fan a Fowler loves the fastball has struggled with breaking pitches and off-speed like that so that's scouting report one on one no guys up there to hit the fastball and you can make the first pitch a swing to miss or a strike with your off-speed then you feel like you can keep leading them in that direction count evens [Applause] interesting thing about the game is trying to learn as pictures and obviously the information you're given is helping you but which guys never come off basketball which guys are guests hitter which guys obviously like certain pitches over the other and that's the kind of information you need to have in your decision-making process [Music] [Applause] our scoring position [Music] over there by 91 miles an hour just pick off those I think I've seen in a while Fowler old for nine lifetime against stroke how's it goes to one and two touched right through it 95 mile an hour heat from stroke Cardinals do put a dent in this kinda lead toward stop fall to young his 30th Cardinals with it check your look watch it on the Fox Sports app it's not often that like lions are on primetime I hope you'll be able to enjoy it I won't Carlos Martinez is pitching what a night for you in half campus go for that foul ball I think it was a Cub fan too and was trying to catch it with their hat at no more all the way down there's no chance they're getting that hat back not here Iroh Serena in right field definite now in this ballpark a download the Fox Sports super 6 app and playing our weekend games for free for a chance to win up to $250,000 the two two broken bat ground ball to first gobbled up by Goldsmith leadoff man retired to Los Angeles Mike Hill with the game break my close game there as well Cardinals buy a game absolutely amazing Milwaukee Brewers the potential would be tied and chased down the Cardinals after horrific news too many games back they have rallied together good one where's the Cardinals are without the services of their opening day closer Jordan Hicks artist throwing man a baseball he's an Indian elbow injury Bader cutting across drifting back throughout there are two TS just hoping for chaos the Washington Nationals want to see chaos they want to see it green 163 backers are waiting for them for somebody the Atlanta Braves would like to see chaos and maybe Jack Flaherty pitching in one of these next two games whoever wins the division goes on to play the Atlanta Braves and of course whoever wins the wild-card gets a date with the Los Angeles Dodgers [Music] strike one a carrot tini ok ask it still happen of all the teams right now that are obviously sitting in the playoffs the one that is not named the Los Angeles Dodgers who has the who won't be fun to play against would be the Washington Nationals as they're starting pitching can give you fits that's no joke now they're both in a little bit of a question mark but that being said the Washington Nationals will have to win the one game to move on and play the Dodgers I want to now of course if the Cardinals lose tonight and if the Brewers hang on and win they are moving to the bottom of the ninth there would be a tie atop the division and the loser of that let's just say 163 game has no bearing on who has the it doesn't work against them it's not gonna matter in this case cuz Washington's locked down the home game for the one game wildcard playoff what their win today but there was a scenario at one point where there could be a three-team tie to for the division and one tie with the wild-card and that extra game would not have cost that team an opportunity to host because they play the next game that extra game won't allow you to have your home lost or two I believe two outs nobody on and another one two in play out towards the gap and drop it in for a base hit Bader quickly scampering over to cut it off keratsini multi-hit game a home run earlier two out single Addison Russell has been on base three times a tine that's a nasty movement on its rank one [Applause] ninety-eight Martyna is signing a very lucrative deal back in the winter of 2017 he's in year three of a five-year deal just over 50 million which has gone from a 200 inning starter to back of the bull pen a long pause and the o2 right he's barely hitting 200 against him when he doesn't open his left shoulder too soon to go to home plate he is tough what happens for time to time he leaked that first that front shoulder towards first base and the ball will not have the same kind of character and late-life correct spin he holds that front shoulder in he could brush it up there and spin the baseball with the best of them meanwhile hater is on the mound for the Brewers in the bottom of the ninth got a lockdown a 2-1 win served in a right field and a base hit here a teeny chugging 4/3 and he gets in safe row serena has taken over and right who else runners on the corners or head game for Russell this one ah flair if you will a little bit to right field and then the throw just a tad bit off line and it's funny how things worked out Cobb's last night with eight runs another eight to nine course Joe Maddon with some somewhat controversial comments to the media before the start of the series about how he would play whoever was necessary for the Cubs and wasn't worrying too much about what great counsel and the Brewers might think about that as you look at the lineup today there aren't a ton of regulars in it of course some of that's because of injury so many stars for the Cubs but eight runs in consecutive games that's why you never know you just never know how it's gonna play out and the emotion of the finish line sometimes gets the best of you you can you can you're almost there it's a long season you went and swept the Chicago Cubs in Chicago when neither team had won a home game in the series up to that point you did what you had to do you created a gap you knocked him out basically out of the playoffs and then these hard charging Brewers just never let up so you you got your playoff spot but you really want to win the division that's what they're trying to do right now and Mike Myers warming up worked in anything last night meanwhile Bodie ahead - and Oh big runner right there karat teeny Anderson Russell at first [Applause] every quarter wave added to and - he just wonder how much haters got left as he has been used a lot you know now as the closer because of some of the injuries that Brewers have had but they're not worried about that right now as they're trying to tie it up in the central with a win tonight and a lost by the Cardinals and then the new rule change that came into play all games would be played at the same time to not give one team an advantage over the other try3 called some gas well for the Cardinals some big bats coming up and the coachman Ozuna Redbirds down there final three outs peace mr. Cavanaugh [Music] they will face veteran right-handers ramming Kinston [Applause] we just put on the scoreboard two out run by the Rockies to tie the game up then two-out home run Sam Hiller [Applause] earlier adoptive hater there in Colorado the rookie for the Rockies as if this ballpark needed something to stand up for found a rally here in the night i won't open things out where's Tommy Edmund [Applause] no need to get out of the way when you got that guard [Applause] the old Schmitt the tying run nobody out bottom nine [Applause] the center a more charge inside making the cash 1 out of 1 on back to LA my kill [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] now many things better than September baseball both these teams both these games in the bottom of the night Cardinals now down to the final two outs I would think this is a good matchup for Ozuna off of Kinsler and what I mean is to get that heavy sinking fastball right there you saw pour it in down and in [Music] [Applause] zouna with more of an uppercut type zone in the carries the bat in the zone this would be something to watch Oh too [Applause] milena on deck one out tying run at the plate I was una twenty nine homers [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the one two [Applause] great pitch and good discipline China back door that sinking fastball now if he could start one over the outer third with a breaking ball off of that plane and I'd be tart that'd be hard for him to lay off of [Applause] album he'll do it too see I like I like one up when a pitch is closed on the outside part of the plate and the hitters got a little bit of doubt that it might be called and then he doesn't get the call you come right back out with something breaking away and put so much heat on the hitter to make that less split the six second decision again but therefore he reset his brain by going back inside again the two to brown down to the option pass and they only get one nickel Horner make it his first big-league start at second base and played exclusively short until tonight nice play there a little bit of the miners [Music] this fall was here hard enough to turn to but you have to come up with it clean and make the flip talk to me as was that one mean that the ball to Russell keep the door open for the Cardinals gasps the Yanni poor for a lifetime against country I hope tonight for st. Louis they are headed to extras in Colorado all one [Music] do it all [Applause] got a really set metal in if your yachty the desire is to obviously tie the game up but you got to keep the line moving you got to pass it on to the next guy you can't expand the zone just for the sake of trying to hit a two-run homer or lift the ball in the air battle way now lane right had been so good all year really especially at home but knocked around tonight puddles have been trying to dig out of a hole ever since [Applause] two outs tied right at the plate bottom nine [Applause] you know who headed out to a boil or attend this time Dutch took this one too bad tensley slams it during the night and the Cardinals fall eight to six and they are routed hard for extra innings to go the way of the Rockies as they have headed to extras in Denver against the Blue Crew we come back to wrap things up from Santo it's got to win this one tonight 8:00 to 6:00 [Music]
