now maybe yes i think it might be working this time are we back are we back let's see if we've got data coming through i think we do all right so i've messed around with this a bit it took a while to get that sorted out but now i seem to be back with a stream and i think the frame rate is probably okay so i've got that camera which is looking into the corner where i'm setting up the new computer i've got this no that's not an actual thing i've got the the phone come on why is my phone not working i wonder if the phone has gone to sleep it might have done okay so that's the front i had the phone working a moment ago let's see what's going on with that wakey wakey phone all right so trade candidates running come back over here switch to microphone yes and now we have the phone working again as well okay hello again tech talk all right so i didn't have enough cable length to use the other camera so my phone is currently acting as a camera and then i've got this one so where are we up to i was clearing out that corner of the bench which means hey frank and hopefully the frame rate is better this time so if i go back to this this camera review let's see yes i can see myself in it then i can get back to jabbering about nothing random okay so that's right what else where i was up to was this monitor stand and i've got a like a micro sd card reader it's hot glued underneath it there's a hot glue double sided tape something like that it's attached anyway and then that cable goes through oh yes and that's that's what i was up to so that cable goes through the stand i've got it unthreaded but that goes down under the bench i think the logical next thing to do is for me to get under the bench and pull out this ubuntu machine situation getting the triple monitor system working on this took a whole lot of messing around although i think it's largely working out of the box now it's got the problem used to be the nvidia drivers that were required to make stuff work power supplies you can't see what i'm doing i am carefully moving a power supply which is sitting on top of the computer because and all this other stuff what was that buoying something went boing volume a bit low okay all right so lindsey my desk is larger than your lab you said and i'll just crank up this volume a little bit i do have it turned down oh yeah the um the level is very low in the db meter i'm turning it up up up i wonder what's going on don't know might be a little bit better than it was of those notifications are the vacuum cleaner complaining that it's stuck on something all right yeah this computer used to have uh i think it was six or eight discs in it and hard disks are heavy when you start putting a few of them into one machine dust it's gross so this is an opportunity set it up again after all the other stuff is done yeah i'm going to get the backing onto this big dust things everywhere i'm gonna drop this out of the way definitely vacuuming required wow i try to keep open surfaces as clean generally but when you have things like computers stuck under benches for a long period of time their own looks and crannies and things you can't get into easily right so that's the trackball for my linux computer with it move that camera out of my way a bit so who's back def pom's here promise nz um ah has the automower kicked the bucket no it hasn't still going strong all right so the audio is still low i don't understand why that is the oh maybe it's the um the system volume all right hang on where do i get to system volume i really dislike some of the changes in current mac os things that used to be one click away or expose directly in the top menu bar now buried multiple levels deep all right input input level okay i'll turn the input level up hopefully that's a bit better all right now so i've got the volume the input volume set at 75 on the system and i've got it set at 100 percent so 0 db in obs hopefully that will be an improvement that's louder good cool thank you now [Music] that's rubbish yes yeah so this is the um what i did have them the old monitor sitting on and you can see the sd card reader under there my cable was you can see all went out the back and under the bench so whenever i wanted to pull a video off the camera i could just stick the sd card in there and it's easy to access the sd card slot on imac is on the back which is not very convenient in fact there is uh is there an sd slot on the new io on the new mac mini remember no there's no sd sign in it so i'm going to need a card reader for now that's now down in the miscellaneous corner with all the other bits and pieces now that we've got that monitor out of the way we can see more of what's going on and another miscellaneous unconnected microsd cable it can also be hung up on the stand extension now what you can't see from your vantage point is that underneath the inch i should label that i'm stuff falling all over the place uh under the bench what i've done is put staples into the bottom of the bench and then looped cable ties through yeah loop cable ties through so under the bench there's a whole lot of cable that goes in underneath it in different directions so the trackball for example there's a i drilled a hole in the bench and then put the cable down through so that it just sits there with no cable visible and then the cable goes under the bench to wherever it needs to go what is this powerful oh this is power for the monitor i see for that 27 inch monitor that i just moved so i'll put this with or i'm that to lose track of it where did i put that cake in the monitor i've lost the monitor already oh there it is sitting down behind the door miscellaneous xt60 extension cable go back up there i've been putting xt60 connectors on everything for a little while now i've got heaps of cables over here these are cables that i use with my lab power supply so xt60 to dc jack xt62 alligator clips xd60 to everything and then my um my lab my bench supplies feed through the xt60 connectors mounted just there which i don't think you can quite see a whole lot of unplugged tables here that just come out and go nowhere i'm just going to shove them under the shovel them down through the hole pull them out from underneath and figure out what they should be all right so this uh this microphone which was given to me by grant from who many of you would know from discord has been really really handy that's super cool but he very generously sent this to me probably a year or two going on when was it it would have been not long after i started doing live streams so uh and i started doing live streams at the start of the first major lockdown around march 2020 so a little bit every year again please send it to me so thank you very much it's been really handy what i think i'm going to do now is pull it out i made up this bracket so that i could have it sitting pointing at me basically pointing straight at me but just out of field of view of the camera so you couldn't see that it was there so now i'm going to move it out of the way there's a tile and a chunk of wood that i was using ah okay actually this is what i was using previously to elevate the thunderbolt display to get it up to the same height as the imac so i should just put this back in place i'll use this again it's kind of um a bit crappy and dodgy but it's not too bad it's just got some tape around it going to come uh i just put white electrical tape around it to make it blend in with everything else and it's a combination of a piece of wood and a floor tile miscellaneous floor tiles lying around the place after doing variations and that combination took it to the right cool so i can't do this let's see if i grab this might have gone back to sleep and switch to that yes okay you can see yourself in the live stream well i can see myself all right so that i'm gonna switch under here hopefully without knocking over this cable which goes to the panasonic camera sitting up there all right get that one out get that one in and then this monitor should be at approximately the correct height oh it's actually slightly higher now but then this monitor feels on old textbooks for monitor stands and i thought it was um data sheet like data books yeah this monitor is now slightly too high but this one feels too low anyway i do want to bring it up a little bit maybe by about the height of the tile so i could go and grab it yeah yellow pages uh i could go and grab another tile out of the garage and stick it under this but i won't do that right now at least that means i get my bit of wood back for doing soldering without scorching the um the static dissipative surface on the bench okay apart from this cable getting in the way that's not bad that's a um that's a reasonable setup can stay like that for now oh harshall asked should i buy the mac mini m1 or ipad pro m1 for video editing and the answer is i have no idea i am not an expert i think i would not buy i don't think i would primarily want to use an ipad for editing though that feels like it would be really painful so i would yeah as johnny said the mini m1 only supports two monitors and what i'm doing here is setting up a triple monitor system but i'm going to be using display link for the third monitor which is unfortunate but supposedly that does work all right got okay so that is a thunderbolt 2 display port cable all right i'll put that with the other monitor that was using that so what i did want to do was use two 49-inch ultra wides stacked but first that would have been four thousand dollars which is uh kind of out of the budget and second the mac mini can't actually drive them because it can only drive two like and drive a 4k plus a 6k display and the ultrawides are 5 k2 so i can only drive one of them i don't know what to do with that the cable comes from my usb hub that is attached above the workbench right i'm just going to move this cable out of the way now so what i'm really hoping for is a an upgraded mac mini probably late in the year now the decision the question is what to do about these monitors here i'm inclined to take them down i think i'm going to strip this entirely even if these end up coming back hmm why yes i will so the ultimate goal of where i'd like to end up with this is a pair of 49-inch ultra wides with an m1x or m2 mini if such a thing happens to be released eventually but in the meantime i'm going to use three i'm going to use three 27-inch monitors two driven directly and one on display link which unfortunately requires software processing for the video it's not ideal it's limited in terms of its refresh rate and uses up a chunk of bandwidth on usb but just the things we have to do yes so usb hub trackball oh that's the power for this hub and now i think i'm going to remove this cup from there entirely i can't tell you how that's attached oh i'm just stuck in the paint all right so this is a um it's an okay usb hub probably one of the better ones i've found no usb hubs are good they all tend to be horrible this one is one of the less horrible ones that i've come across it's an ambit brand it's a usb 3.0 plus seven port hub all switchable so you can turn individual ports on and off which is quite handy and it's got four ports that are usb 3 and three ports that are not what do they go to these are power to something at the moment there are some very big cable bundles all right first i'm going to lift these monitors off but the little mascots can go somewhere i'll sit there for now back there all right lift it off these are all on little piece of mounts hanging off that wooden frame um yes that's right this is funny this monitor i actually do not know who did this ages and ages ago i was using this monitor originally these were at ivt these were my my work monitors and i was pulling it apart one day or moving a computer and i found this label on the back of it i don't think you can i don't think it's focusing so you can read it and it just says what is up with john oxen i don't know someone at some point has decided to put a dynamo label asking what is up with me on the back of my mother scalable time again everywhere it's all right stuff these ones under go unplug whatever i can find down there that is just not going anywhere okay what we got lots of cable ties lots of cables attached up under the bench all of those monitors were plugged into a power board under here which is plugged into a sonoff so that i could turn off all the monitors uh through she who shall not be named clear some more okay so when i walk in in the morning i can just tell she who shall not be named to turn everything on and without usb extension cable here that goes somewhere i don't know where it goes it goes all the way down the bench ah that must be the capture for the microscope now for okay label printer cable that now goes nowhere that was plugged into the ubuntu machine there's a usb extension cable what was that one uh i don't know usb in particular is going to have to be totally regular so i'm not going to be too shy about um ripping stuff out i'll trick this as a as much of a clean slate exercise as i can at least everything should end up routed nicely and bundled okay so from there there's a ups down here which is actually being used right now so oh video cables of the okay more random usb cables and i'll try dragging that one from the top power cable well this has been my random cable score from under there so far dvi cable moderately long hdmi cable which could be very useful wow okay yes microscope just dropped it under all right so i am really tempted to just take that whole stand away i don't really know what i'm going to do because um i've been thinking about what to do with the ubuntu computer i'm wondering if i should switch over to running obs on that but that has some problems if i want to share the screen on my main computer so what i'm leaning towards is taking the monitors that were here and show you another view let's see if the phone needs to be working up again come on phone wake up there we go all right i'm going to try and move slightly so that makes you see the perspective all right so that is the southwest corner where the imac is now set up panning to the left across the electronics workbench area and into the southeast corner where my computer was until just recently just to the left of that you can see the computer that runs through the place machine so the three monitors that used to be there what i think i'm going to do is take two of them and wall mount them just pan to the left past all that stuff and i'm going to wall mount them right up hang on spring in the blank again come on phone unlock i'm i'm going to wall mount them right up there two of them side by side above the door so that walking through the door you can see them and that's just for status screens like showing orders that need to be packed and stock level and those sorts of things when this extension was done i actually planned for it so that piece of wall above the door is behind the plaster there is a solid piece of chipboard and i did that so that there would be a mounting base where i could mount monitors up there and there are big holes in the cavity going from there up into the ceiling and then up in the ceiling space just around here somewhere where i'm waving there is there are two ethernet ports and a gpo so we've got power and network up there so what i'll probably do is put something like a raspberry pi drive me a couple of those monitors and mount those monitors up the top okay turning around back to this view so hmm so i'm thinking i will just move these for now just take this away and bye bye yes dustin rubbish everywhere now i'm probably not going to need this with the old computer setup because i had the ubuntu machine three monitors there three monitors here two discs and a bunch of other stuff plugged into it i needed lots of power points most of these i'm not going to have in the new setup so this [Music] here all right we're heading towards a nice little clear bench still at the mess of dusty crappiness so that's usb hub i'm not sure if i'm even going to use that one still i just don't know i actually don't have a plan yet for how i'm going to get enough usb devices plugged in simultaneously hmm where does that go oh it's just hanging up that's all it is it's a all style usb a to b lead exactly this is the label printer and i love my label printer so that's going to stay i'm not sure about this this cable is a it's an audio cable plugs into the headphone jack well it actually plugs into the like a four-way jack on a mac and it converts into a three-way headphone jack on a little 3d printed thing under here so if i've got headphones i can just plug in the edge without reaching around behind the computer i will probably keep that so i'm going to leave that sticking up out of there i'm going to shove the lead down this ethernet cable is for the pick and place machine remove those objects now can i do this any meter don't know step one i'll get rid of some of this dust all this stuff stuck on the wall there's going to be a big gap now above the monitors which is going to look a little bit strange a little explanation anyway because i'm not used to that gap being there all right what are these two power leads doing do we need them one of them goes up there to that and that is power to the overhead camera so yes that one needs to be there we're not necessarily plugged in where it is and the other one where does that go everyone goes to this power adapter 5 volt 6 amps where is that going oh that is for the leds i think that run um yeah for the located strip leds all right so those probably need to stay but not necessarily plug into those sockets the back corner of this bench is unfortunately bouncy because it's not properly braced against the wall i attached strips of 90 by 45 figures along the wall which the back of this sits on but it doesn't go all the way into the corner so let's see if you can see this where's the camera there the back of that bounces up and down that corner this bench isn't very much bearing i'm getting closer to being able to put any noises up yuck we're gonna put that rpa it would be nice to resurface this bench but i'm not going to go that far not this time who knows how long i'm going to stay in this this workshop too because what would be really nice ultimately is to get some factory space and set it up properly but for now this is what we're doing okay let's have a look at that it's not really properly cleaned yet but at least i now have a clear corner where my computer used to be and it's over here you can see the discoloration on the bench you see there are yellow patches on it like right there that's a little bit hard to see on this camera it's not really showing up very well there is a square yellow patch right there there's a round yellow patch another patch there you can see the shape of the keyboard so thinking to how to arrange this there are a couple of fixed things it's a little bit like the process of designing a board like a circuit board that's going to have connectors and things attached to it that goes inside an enclosure first thing you've got to do is figure out from the outside how it's going to fit in the enclosure and where the connectors need to go because everything else then becomes dependent on that where you lay stuff out on the pcb depends on where your connectors are oriented which depends on how people are going to be using the device and in the same way using a computer the critical things are the user interface devices so the keyboard primarily has got to be an optimal position and the monitors have to be in optimal position just where it should be okay yeah and then everything else is dependent on those things so once i've got myself a nice clear space to work with position monitors in the optimal position and then everything else depends on that all right now that is rot okay that is the uh the dymo labeler i'm going to chuck that underneath i want to get rid of these power cables too because they uh the other one powering the led strips and then it's probably a better place to put those in fact if i ran so the overhead camera i could power off yes i've got a spot for that i can attach that to the plug this into one of the gpus that's in the workbench area so to keep it out of the way but then that cable is going to be routed down the back there are holes in the back of these shelves so i can run cables vertically i'll get up and feed that through but i'll do that some other time now this one could just go i'll reach into a powerpoint underneath maybe let's find out down here but yeah before i do anything else i think i'm gonna have to do a little bit of vacuuming under there otherwise i'm if i don't start with everything clean then i'm just gonna mix it up dirty as i'm putting it on here and then moving things around so time to hit mute i think first over there and where's mute and on mute i have that mute worked because that was very loud so this is one of the um fixed position things that position it's pretty much optimal for me time to give that a spray with the rpa i really like track balls when i first started using them i didn't think i would and so my friend mark is the one that had been using them for a while and told me that i should give them a go and i tried it and it seemed a little bit unnatural at first after being used to a mouse obviously for so many years after i use it for a little while i just got used to it and now mouse feels unnatural okay so before i get the monitors out i should wash my hands so i've been crawling around on the floor i am a total brush at the moment oh come on now we have ourselves kind of a clean slate yes i will wash my hands but first view switch i'll get out the monitors spirit level in the bathroom because i want to check the level on that bench i am pretty sure all right that is not level it's low on the right significantly low on the right and low towards the back i wonder if i just if i brace the back and draw it up it would fix the level of the whole bench my certainly again improvement let's see what it would take to do that before or no that would be um fair bit of work um there is a big bit of pipe running underneath here as well which is my uh my air evacuation system like the view extraction system and there's a big bit of pipe under here it goes all the way around and it's kind of in the corner so getting something underneath that back corner is not going to be easy so the other thing i could do is get another sheet of something and sit it on top of the bench and shim it so that it gives me a perfectly flat surface but that would be really ugly all right i think what i'm going to do is chuck the monitors on and we'll see how bad it is so now we get a bit of monitors what is everybody talking about uh angel bosma said you know clean up my first would be to lose all visible cables from the desk and hang from shelves yes um yes cool uh johnny said uh is display link supported on um yes it was yes it is so many people have set up their m1 mac minis with display link switch to this view so it's time for the unboxing a bag just to put a piece of paper in fine fine the other thing i don't know is whether you've got all the cables i need for connecting this up came with an hdmi cable which is nice i'm also going to need a usbc like a thunderbolt cable hopefully they supplied that as well otherwise i'm going to be running on one monitor for a little while at least because i'm actually only has one hdmi port and relies when i ordered these i didn't really pay that much attention to the um the case and i didn't realize until after i place the order that the case is white but the back of it's white anyway because the pictures that you see show the front oh wow those bezels are skinny that's really cool because that means that when i butt it up oh you know the edge of the display comes in a bit from the bezel so it's not as skinny as it looks but still what i want to do is be able to button up side by side and have the image be almost seamless so in front of it it's black the back of the monitor is white which is okay it's a little bit odd but it's all right so now it's got this amount which is good so what i could do that's just a cover cover the base amount looks like that simply clips in that goes that way so yeah this one does not have any adjustment for height or rotation it's only got adjustment for itself which is slightly unfortunate there are two different versions of this monitor there is the q model and the qs model the qs has a fancy stand and it's a lot more expensive so i just got the two model which is the simple cheap one which way does that go by which means i am probably going to be running a single monitor triple monitor set up at least for a little bit until i get the display link adapter and a suitable cable for the thunderbolt connection so what have we got on here there's power two hdmis and displayport okay i'm just going to shove it back out of the way because i'm going to do the same process now this one i know what's in it i'm going to assemble this i keep expecting my phone to go flat because it's streaming video at the moment and uh i can feel it gets quite warm while it's doing this at the moment my phone is running like a throwing droid cam which is streaming video over wi-fi to obs which is then streaming it up to youtube phone choose through its battery it's pretty fast while it's streaming video okay and done i have a habit of keeping boxes i've been really up in the ceiling i've got boxes like the original boxes from my imac and every laptop i've ever bought i think and pretty much everything even boxes for things like wi-fi access points and ethernet switches the general concept behind it was if i ever end up selling it i can re-box stuff and make it all factory original there's nothing much else yeah i've got plenty of storage up inside the ceiling space it's hard to get to so i can't really take much heavy stuff up there but i'll be light things like boxes i didn't put the cover on the back of the piece amount for that second monitor so to get these monitors level i'm gonna have to chop them which frankly sucks i'd like to have a perfect bench as a starting point because if your foundation isn't good everything else that builds up from it's rubbish where did i just put that basic column yes all right we're getting somewhere except we're going to put the second decent amount on yeah so that's right as i was saying pizza means that is actually one way that i might overcome the unevenness of the bench so what i might end up doing is setting up some kind of more interesting arrangement and the other thing is these will probably be too low because what i want to do is get the top of the monitors to be just a little bit above eye level and uh i think these are going to be quite a bit lower than the other monitors let's find out rather than use a temperature i'm just going to use a measuring stick so where my finger is is the top of the other monitors so you can see here that oh which camera are you on that side okay so the top of the other monitors the imac and the thunderbolt display came to there which camera are you on it must be on that one yes okay yeah it was up about here so they need to come up a couple of centimeters at least anyway [Music] all right being changed so i can get the cheer through because i want to check the seating position so i can see it there keyboard is there starting point is the center monitor yeah really low and in particular like a lot of the time if you're using a single monitor what you'll do is have it so that it's tilted back a little bit so that when you're looking at it your eyes are straight onto it but because this is going to be buttered up with other monitors it has to stay perfectly vertical which means that the whole thing needs to be lifted up in order to get the um to get the eye angle correct that'll be too low like that so i'm going to one looks like this is going to have to move partly because these are so low with the old monitors they it actually came above the label printer a little bit and sort of behind it and above it but this is just not going to fit so i'm going to i think what i'm going to do is build a custom monitor riser yes i think that's going to be the plan so raise these up significantly and have clear space underneath it but now what i'm going to do is move the label out of the way so that i can get the monitors into the actual position where they need to go that needs to go back a little bit something like that so if i make a custom monitorizer what that will do is give me a flat base as a starting point and then the legs of the riser can be adjusted to allow for to make it sit tightly flat and allow for the fact that the bench isn't perfectly level and then the monitors have a perfectly flat surface to see on so now that still tilted back needs to be really vertical for these to fight against each other and you can see how far out where are we yeah you can see how far out these are because of the angle of the bench as it sits here so what we're going to end up with today is just a temporary setup but at least i'll be able to use the mac means because this is skinny and how much this is going to come up with the monitor riser this might end up fitting underneath the riser for now i wonder if i can just sit for monitor on this i've got another mini other holder as a test see if that height now that height is okay you could do with coming up just a fraction higher so that's raised at maybe 20 millimeters what is the thickness of a mini must be more than 20 millimeters must be yes one more it's more like 35. my eyes need recalibrating yeah it's just over 30 millimeters higher than the other monitors so i think what i need to aim for is maybe raising it about 50 millimeters off the deck it will take so that will take it up to about that height yes i'm making a monitor riser it's not a project for now it's a project for the weekend well kind of is but it's the time 5 29 is now officially the weekend all right we've got to get it to the point where the macmillan is running at least driving one monitor i want to see what these monitors look like super duper 4k monitors who's that looks like there's maybe a speaker i don't know if there's monitors speakers in them i don't think so i assume not i didn't even look when i was checking the specs because i don't really care i'm going to set up a um i've got a set of proper speakers with a supple for an amp and everything i'm going to set that up as well it's getting to the point of the process where everything starts taking a very long time because it's just fiddling with little things so let's subject you to that okay here get your dog out there track pad i think this is the trackpad that i paired with the macmillan peter have you been telling me to eat it feels like you should have been there so this power lead to the monitor i'm going to put into the power board i've got underneath the bench that is connected to the side so that all the monitors will power off when i shut down yes i'm gonna need to be doing a lot of cable tying down here to get everything neat plug that into the central monitor position then i need uh ethernet would be nice and power so powerfully at some point my uh my microphone is going to go flat too and i've still got a new battery okay so we have internet i need the receiver for where's the receiver for the keyboard it's not plugged into the mac anymore yes just to make it neat we've got eight ethernet sockets just in this corner four under the bench four above the bench all right the last thing is going to be power for the mac mini where did the power cable go i had a white one here doesn't make me also kind of black i'll use this one for now this is the power cable from the old mac mini but seriously i need to find where i put the um there's a hop here it is there's a usb hub it's got receivers in it it's got a receiver for the the 3d connections space mouse and for the um the keyboard all right i'm just going to plug that in as it is for now i'm going to try doing anything fancy with that i'll just leave it sitting there on the bench behind the monitor then which is an ideal position actually because it's not in my way when i'm typing my hands just going on the side of it but then i can just reach down and grab it all right power for the mac mini and then i think we can turn it on once again a lot more cable tie edge required to compact audio on the mac mini is terrible it's got a really tinny little built-in speaker it sounds like our um sounds like a tin can yeah where is powell that this monitor how do i turn around and feel buttons under there oh there it is english yes we have signal i'm just going to get this in a spot where i can get it close but then i can also get the chair in and a password oh it's not working because that will not be plugged in where does the trackball go i'm going to feed that up into the usb hub just for now i think oh it goes all the way over there i see all right more cable tie removal required then and grab it from above that resolution looks off i suspect i'm gonna have to change it now can you see over my shoulder if i type i'm gonna block the keyboard oh email opening by default all right nice working well very slow setting on the [Music] trackball i'm going to install the yes maybe that one isn't the one that was paired with the computer i need to install the logitech drivers i don't think it's got the which tech stuff installed logitech yeah it's like a slow mouse default for display cool what options does it give livestream more space 3840 by 2160 if i wanted to use the entire space that's what it would look like but no let's go to fault for display all right so 27 inch in 4k mode so retinum kind of retina mode i suppose you could call it but now we have a working mac mini very cool let's just check the all six inputs have now been activated you can move the model in any direction simultaneously all right now i need to get this trackpad working maybe it just needs to be paired i don't know what this go to your magic mouse i think it's that one all right it's got two things paired with the magic mouse actually i'm going to forget that because i'm not actually going to use it i compare that one and that one i thought was this but maybe it's not so i'll put this one in pairing mode come on it's got the blinking marine led which means it's in pairing mode but it's not showing up that often means just the batteries in these things are getting low as well when they start doing weird stuff like that so let's give that a try grab some delays [Applause] i wonder if i'm moving stuff on the other computer don't think so all right brings in the pairing mode again all right trust my genes that's in pairing mode and you have to make me still not seeing it hmm i don't know i'll figure that out some other time okay so the reason that i wanted that is that i use gestures on the trackpad all the time in order to do things like launch stuff so let's just start up fusion 360 for a um different experience to running it on the imac well that's better than the 15 minutes plus that it takes to launch on my mac on the imac i keep going for the left hand thing i'm really commonly just wondering if you can see this yeah my usual way of working is track pad on the left hand trackball under the right hand and using both of them at the same time so like two fingers scrolling on here while moving the cursor here and selecting stuff so i keep reflexively going for this and it's not doing anything let's try looking at something well first impression of this screen is that it's really clear which i would i expect it should be as a warpain monitor yeah that is so sharp but the other thing is that the color is very different like looking at the color on this compared to looking at the color on my thunderbolt display the thunderbolt display looked kind of yellow but when i'd be in fusion 360 like this and this is all like tones of gray you would have a bit of a yellow tinge to it but with this it looks like a really plain gray looks like a tube i don't have because i haven't been using this computer for anything much it doesn't have anything caged so things like vision 360 projects when i open them it's got to pull them down out of the cloud before i can do anything but once it's once i've been using this one it should be a whole lot faster this dropbox yes it is so that's what it's doing now let's open the eagle so frustrating with this slow thing i've already installed the logitech drivers whoa that was fast eagle opens quickly um projects pwc hardware go wow okay managed libraries so this is the um mobile wheelchair controller project that chris i've been working on recently update update update yeah it is slightly disappointing that i um i can't use more than one monitor yet but that's an issue of cables that i can solve so i need i a a thunderbolt to displayport cable to get the second monitor going yes yes don't i use what is fusion doing that's interesting rendering problem maybe that hasn't switched out of eagle fusion i have been using fusion and eagle on this on this mac mini so i know they do work but it's pitch balling which is sad what are you doing fusion still says it's trying to download the project so maybe there's just some connectivity issue annoying all right what else can we do i don't know even this is fast like just um no block just opening up a tab on a browser i don't have too many i need to add which one it is gmail.com now i'm not going to click share password and use the security okay phone tablet get a verification code i probably shouldn't be showing all of this on a live stream should i okay now to get a code um i'm going to see i'm turning my phone away come on unlock the phone now if i oh i may not be able to get the verification going while it's doing the streaming but i'll try okay i'm resisting the urge to read out that code that was just sent and log in and switch to that account and let's see all right now i'm into the channel dashboard which means i can switch this back around again and what i'm going to do is just move this back over here so you get a general view verify that it's you okay proceed what verification do they need all right then tap 18 on your phone to verify that it's new now how do i get the sign in notification um yes it's me i'm revealing my two-factor authentication i'm going through this all right so now i'm signed in which means on this computer i should now be able to see the chat okay well that's fast it's finally open all right bring this back in here so diffusion open and the space mouse now i can spin around in this project and navigate it the zoom on this is it's amazing compared to doing this on the um on the imac that is so fast it just felt really frustrating and slow so this is incredible wow all right what else to do i don't know it's a computer it works so i've got a whole lot more set up to do on this bench area i need to make a monitor riser and sit the monitors on it so bring them all up i'm going to bring them up even higher than this currently you're sitting on the mac mini and i need to put all the other bits and pieces back in place there's normally the um the shall not be named plugged in there in fact i've got this quite a bit closer to me than i did before just for um i can see the mark so that yellow mark on the bench just there that is where the stand the front of the stand was for the thunderbolt display and this connector here this cable this was plugged into the back of this this echo um and that was further back than this it was in front of the monitor slightly so i'm wondering is whether all of this needs to go further back which might improve the field of view issue a little bit let's see that just goes straight back in fact i can see there's a circle on the bench here where this used to be so i'm going to put this back in place right there and then move these monitors back and butt them against that that feel too far away no i think that's good it does still need to be a little bit higher though i think that position is pretty good it's far enough away that the field of view across the three monitors is reasonable but it's close enough that everything is clear and uh pretty cool it's not quite straight because of the tilting bench yes i definitely need to figure out what's going on with this why is this not pairing that is annoying that it's not and so it's not connected is there another track around somewhere i've got a few different trackpads so this one is connected to the imac so that's not it that's the only one i'm pretty sure this one that i've got here on the bench the next thing of course oh no it's this calculator this is the one from the other computer will put in place it's around somewhere i need to clean these down too take the opportunity to give so it should be natural position there which across there but i need to get this working first all right it's one of those things where i just keep trying to do the same thing over and over again expect that one day it's going to work and that's not how things work it's definitely in pairing mode it's doing the multi-blank but is it pairing with the other computer no i'm going to turn off bluetooth on this imac just in case oh i think it is pairing with this all right bluetooth off there we go connect yes that's better so the batteries that we're in were probably fine yeah now it's working all right i'm gonna unclear that one so what i should do is put the other batteries back in when they're probably fine i'll use them until they're actually dead and then switch them okay wake up connected three that's better so now we can zoom and pan and do all the things so smooth and normally that normal custom key macro keyboard sits off to the side this usually goes just here i don't like the fact that this has got a cable it's visible all right for now i'm going to plug it in to this i'm doing a whole lot of just for now things which have not been my intention my um my goal is to do this the right way so can you see this okay um with the macro keyboard i can do things like press one button and it does rats nest press another one and it does rip up i can change tools so i can go to the select tool and then do that i can do that and it's the move tool i can do route that's a route tool a rip up tool or just by clicking different things under here and it's got you know show info delete there basically a whole lot of things so the way this works is that this enumerates as a regular keyboard and then when you press one of these keys it sends a series of characters it's actually sending an evil command so in the case of tool selection or if i want to say i do a rat's nest and then i want to do a rip up what it sends we've got focus on the command line thing here the command prompt what it actually does is type rip up space ampersand semicolon enter so all i do is press that once and it's as if i've typed that out so you can do the same thing by typing rip up ampersand semicolon enter it's a long way but i can just press the button it does the same thing and that's how i also do full selection in eagle so yeah pan and zoom with this move the cursor with this and they both work at the same time and tool selection and combines with the macro keyboard so that combination basically it's like three not well not really three point devices it's two plenty devices plus the macro keypad makes it uh yeah really quick to do stuff in eagle all right now what now what now is i've made a big mess this place is a shambles hang on i'm gonna grab this camera and spin it around look at this central area i've just got rubbish piled everywhere and cables on the floor and over there i've got the monitors the monitor stands there's the linux machine it's all stacked inside the door monitor boxes this this whole thing is a mess now i'm going to move this camera over this area so you can get a kind of an overall view with the new computer in the corner there okay i still need to put these batteries away all right i'm going to leave them there and try not to forget but i still need to do that so who do we have sitting here talking to each other and ignoring me ah right hmm are you still doing to your tasmania segments i'm gonna have a look backwards slightly yes i am so i think i'm gonna turn bluetooth back on so i've got my keyboard working is it where is it bluetooth on so that i can have my scrolly trackpad wake up scrolly trackpad come on give me a scrolly trackpad i'm probably scrolling stuff on the other computer now yeah there is some weird thing going on with these devices that aren't maybe i need to repair this now with this computer yeah because i've been pairing different devices with different computers they've all ended up getting confused all right i'm going to un-connect from all the track pads that this thing knows about and then repair this one there we go connect come on they seem to be getting confused with having multiple computers here which they've paired with at different times in the past couldn't connect ah very annoying all right i'm going to defer that whole problem oh john mccrae you're meant to be planning a video well then you should be doing an actual video not just watching me make a mess of my room uh what's the other view where did i have that camera pointed that way well if you can see on the tv that it's dark outside now that corner looks so weird now with without that second row of monitors i definitely need to raise that bottom row and then maybe lower the uh the big monitor or put another monitor back in there i don't know what i'm going to do i don't have much of a plan i don't have a plan at all really all right so tech talk said are you still doing two year test mode segments yes i have a um a partly refilmed two-year conversion part three which is the serial conversion thing and now that i've got that mac mini set up in that corner i'm going to do a bit more editing on it so i've started with editing and reshooting so it's been kind of frustrating on this computer daniel said good thing you don't get many earthquakes now you with the shelving in boxes above your head yeah we've had a couple of rumbles there um certainly nothing like christ church was it christchurch that had the really bad earthquakes where i am in melbourne i'm just near mount dandenong which is actually a um like a seismically active area um ah john mccray asked am i making room for angus to move back in that would be nice so this where i'm sitting right now this was angus's desk um up until he left me heartbroken and went to espressif but no he i'm he's got other plans he's going to take a couple of months off and take a break after finishing up with espressif so he was there for five years and it's at five years four years something like that a long time and he's got a very interesting idea about what he wants to do next and it's not my place to say what it is um so yeah but what it is is really really cool i think you might be having second thoughts about it but i really hope he doesn't i hope he does what he's planning to do because it would be super cool and i would want to be his first customer anyway i'm not going to get into that because i don't want to reveal anything that he doesn't want to reveal so yeah he's got an idea for a business that he wants to start and he's i think his plan is to do that in a couple of months but he needs uh he needs a break so curse asked i think it's pronounced curse could be kverse is the ubuntu machine being retired um i don't think so and i'm a little bit unsure about that so the ubuntu machine was my main desktop machine for a while quite some years ago and uh it takes a lot of power it's a um it's a pretty well specced but old i7 system with a 32 gig of ram i did have i think it was six or eight discs in it for a while which really chewed through the power and a multiple graphics cards and all that sort of stuff so just running it i would keep the whole room warm just by running that one computer which is not very good for the power bill it's nice having even if i'm working on a mac it's really nice having an ubuntu desktop as well and the way i had it set up in the corner over there before if i switch this view was uh now can i i can point from off screen so i had the bottom row of monitors where was my mac the second row of monitors was connected to the ubuntu machine and i was running uh synergy so that i could use just one keyboard and mouse my keyboard and trackpad and move the cursor just i just drag it up and i'd be on the ubuntu machine drag it down and i'd be on the mac so i would drive both machines simultaneously from the same keyboard and mouse and having an ubuntu machine available as a desktop is really handy and having it on the network is really handy so i would often do things like run databases like mariadb stuff i was running influx db on it and other things but what i've mostly moved over to doing now is running those sorts of things on the synology nas so i don't really need a high powered ubuntu desktop to be running constantly using power so i'm a little bit unsure i'm not quite sure what to do about it i've been thinking about maybe using that for live streaming but what i'm going to need to do is try running obs on the mac mini and just see what it's like now obs did have some problems when the mac mini first came out well when the m1 chips came out with big sur there was a problem that obs didn't really work on it but supposedly it works nicely now so i may one plan was to have the ubuntu machine sitting under the bench down there and use that have that running obs and just start it like on a sunday when i wanted to do a live stream and have that acquiring all of the camera streams and everything and pushing the stream out and that way none of that load is on my desktop computer but yeah depending on how well this runs on the m1 then um i may not need it yes yes so age jane bosma said we'd like to see more of the super house number one to number 30 plus kind of videos yes so would i i was talking about this on the live stream on sunday and the difference between an explanatory video versus a tutorial video and recent ones have ended up too much like tutorials as in do this then this then this and they date because um software changes things change and eventually you need to do things in a different way so and they're not very fun to make i don't enjoy really making tutorial videos that just step you through telling you what you have to do to achieve something i would much rather be making videos that are more about how things work and explaining stuff so i'm going to try to do a bit more of that all right i have a whole lot of cleaning up to do in this room now and i'm not going to keep the stream going while i'm doing that so i don't think it's going to be very interesting what am i going to do yeah well until i get the display riser i can't really do permanent cabling because that's all going to be dependent on the monitors being in position and not moving hmm i'm going to have to get right on to that otherwise it's going to hold everything else up so yes display rise or weekend i think uh i'm going to need to get some i'm going to have to see if i've got some already because i shouldn't be going to bunnings during a lockdown i can't just go out and buy stuff so i need to see if i've got something like some 19 mil yellow tongue floor shedding i might have a chunk around that i can cut up and cut it into the right shape for the monitor riser and then just put some little legs under it so that it sits up at the right height then yes anyway how long has this live stream been ages it's got to be way too long now when did it start 4 20 and it's now 6 10 so this second part's been going for nearly two hours okay well i'm gonna go but thank you for um hanging around while i did random stuff not the most revealing thing it's got to be lunchtime yes peter you're right it's got to be lunch time okay i am going to end this live stream so uh well and i'll be back on sunday of course but hopefully by then i will have this room cleaned up a bit and it will all be a lot neater and i may even be doing the live stream on sunday from the m1 so in the meantime i've got to try installing obs on it and see how it goes with doing the uh video acquisition we shall see all right i'm probably gonna need a thunderbolt um a thunderbolt hub anyway okay i've got to hit end stream or i'm never going to stop all right here we go i'm going to click the button waving bye bye over my head bye
