the iridians have long remained a mystery to the universe of borderlands having existed since the very first game in 2009 not much has been known about these ancient beings for the past 10 years of the franchise that is until borderlands 3. similar to the previous entries much of the game's lore exists outside of the boundaries of the main narrative this game introduced iridian writings which function much like the well-known echologs but in these a siren from long ago known as niriad informs us all about the iridians and how their people came to a demise because of the destroyer and herself for i am the one who put the destroyer in its chains i am the one who murdered the iridians i am myriad all of the writings are told from her perspective so events before herself still remain unknown as she is a siren not an all-knowing being but the iridians are simply a people a race of billions so advanced that they outpaced themselves and their purpose the iridians were neither gods nor demons they were simply a people whose abilities outpaced their needs so in their curiosity broke down walls that should have stayed up they were perhaps fated to be erased at their own behest like the forest that grows so that it may burn they've created vaults before neriad's involvement imprisoning monstrosities as well as creations of their very own they'd already created the guardians to protect the vaults from intruders they need not act as jail keepers simply protectors through their ventures the iridians came across the destroyer one of if not the most dangerous being to exist in the entire universe it would eat planets wipe out races rid galaxies and eat the stars like nothing ever happened this alien could not be so easily contained similar to their past prisoners and so they sought out the then leech siren neriad it remains unknown how and why the iridians knew of the siren's existence and also what they were capable of but they did and they asked for her help in containing the being noticing the desperation of the iridians niriad agreed to help when the iridians found me my sisters tried to fight them off but i stopped them i saw what lay behind their open hands i knew that anyone who would ask for my help was already lost and so the iridians began work on creating pandora a cage designed to seal the unstoppable monster for all eternity the prison known as pandora is the most incredible cage ever constructed an unbreakable lock meant to hold an unceasing evil for all eternity even for the iridians whose reach could pluck stars from across the void it was the work of centuries the creation of pandora took the minds of generations to assemble it was an impossible task the scope unthinkable the cost of failure too great still they worked diligently even as stars in the sky above them began to wink out and during its creation some people even attempted to win the favor of the destroyer and took it upon themselves and attempted to destroy the cage before it was finished in response the iridians created the warrior to kill those people and protect pandora against anyone wishing to destroy it not all shared the desperate optimism of the iridians there were some who hoped to appease the destroyer and save their own souls by attacking the yet unfinished pandora they were met by another of the iridians creations the warrior though their coup was obliterated the warrior now sleeps in its own vault ready to defend it from any who'd further trespass against pandora for this cage to work however and the reason they sought out niriad specifically was because the prison needed lives to contain a powerful and god-like being does not come at the cost of nothing and so the iridians made the ultimate sacrifice they had niriad leech billions of their kind all of them so their lives could be used to seal and contain the destroyer until the end of time it was not the destroyer whom wiped out the iridians in some sort of fight it was the iridian's own curiosity and virtue which led them to discover the god and tasked themselves with stopping it i do not know how the iridians became aware of the destroyer they never spoke of a time before it but i suspect that they went searching for it or something like it and for their curiosity they were rewarded with doom they lured in the destroyer with all of the lives on pandora to trick such a being required a great sacrifice allure millions of lives that entered pandora ahead of its captive tempting it further inward and disguised its key to look like its moon as no one would be around to move the key after the cage was locked the iridians knew of the flaw in their design the cost of putting the destroyer in its chains meant that there was no one left to throw away the key all they could do was disguise it and so it will forever hang in the sky a small cold tidally locked moon unremarkable even to the dwellers on the surface of the planet so nyriad leeched all of the eridians and used their power to seal the destroyer in its iridium tight cage it was here that i killed them a billion lives to power a machine should it comfort me that they will throw in its heart forever perhaps oblivion would have been kinder it would have been for me at least though to keep the beast sedated the iridians worked out a mechanism which would summon people every 200 years so it could be fed keeping the monster satisfied enough that it wouldn't break free all prisoners must be fed even the destroyer the iridians devised of a feeding slot that calls wayward souls to open it every two hundred years a cruel surprise for those that open this false vault but in exchange the small morsel will keep the destroyer sedate over the eons in any case the victims will not be in pain for long that is the vault uncovered in the events of the first game after this niriyad shamed in bearing the guilt of killing an entire race continued with the short remainder of her life until she locked herself in a vault and died as far as we the player are aware the guardians are the only thing left of the iridian civilization the guardians are not a race they are a technology one that was never intended on being the heir to the iridians but they are while the biggest question what really happened to the iridians was answered i can't help but wonder why all of the iridians had to die would the prison really have been so much less powerful had they let a hundred live answers only lead to further questions and that was nyriad's story of how she killed the iridians half of her writings regard the events that transpired with the destroyer and the other half about her and her siren sisterhood i know the writings are a bit scattered and all over the place when you collect them but i hope i explained them enough in an order that made sense i didn't mention every one of her messages about the destroyer as some of them are more interesting facts than they are relevant to her story anyway i hoped you liked this video be sure to subscribe if you did for all sorts of borderlands content and in the meantime i'll see you in the next video [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
