Recently, even Cristopher Nolan described Cillian
Murphy as one of the greatest actors of all time. And If you are following me for a while, you know
i keep saying in many of my videos Peaky Blinders is a masterpiece. And in this video we're gonna
be breaking down one of the best scene filmed in television history. It is where Tommy Shelby meets
Billy Kimber for the first time. With this deep dive analysis, you'll be learned the meanings
of many popular and important body language gestures that you must know, meanings of some
red flag, signals of power and domination when communicating with people, and, Besides all of
that, you will also observe the reason why he's got described as one of the greatest actors,
with god level of acting here. Enjoy watching. Scene starts wih Billy's walking into the pub. Allright. First, Look at how loud he speaks and
how aggressive he is. This is generally unusual in their world. For example, on the first
meeting of Luca and Tommy, both parties were calm. Or with another villain, Mosley, they were
generally nonviolent. -Except this one- So what does that mean? It's just an expression of Billy's
weak character and insecurity. He will give many signals about it soon, but for now, as you can
see, instead of escalating the violence if it's necessary, he directly draws the gun while
repeating it for the just second time. Why, because he lacks patience and confidence. Look how
frowning his eyebrows are. This is an expression of anger inside. And another point, look at how
often he blinks his eyes. People often blink more rapidly when they are feeling distressed or
uncomfortable. From the very beginning, it can be inferred that Billy is agitated, uncomfortable,
insecure and therefore violent and angry. And here is one of the places where we clearly see
the difference in class between Tommy and Billy. Look at his neutral facial expression and
eye lock when he first opens the door. If you watched my other videos, you should be
familiar with this trick. Whatever his position, the eyelock technique is one of Tommy's menacing
techniques to establish his superiority from the first second. It allows him to establish
his authority over the person even when he's inferior. So you should definitelly use
this if you are in a serious businness. Lets continue:
He slowly walks to the table, and turning his back
on the man, he had just heard yelling angrily and pulling a gun. In fact, he could simply go the
other way, most of us would probably do it in the same situation even without realizing it, because
it would make us feel safer subcounsciously, we will talk about the "social zones" in the
later of this video already, and you will understand the reason of that, but for know,
Tommy, purposefully wanders around because he, wants to pass in front of him and turn
his back. The message behind of that "I don't even think you're strong enough to hurt
me" or " i dont even take you as a threat." And look at this little detail here. His thumb
protrudes from the coat's pocket. This is a very common gesture for those who feel superior to
the others. Usually the boss will walk around like that, and when he's not here, the one who
is in next in charge will walk around using it. Overall, the more angry, agitated and
uncomfortable Billy is, the more calm, confident and comfortable Tommy is.
Here comes the first power move. Closed hand with
finger pointed. This is a very threatening move and the universal sign of showing your authority
and agression. Tommy did it to show his authority over his own company to Billy Kimber, and
gave a message like "remember, you are in my pub and i am the boss here." Also he did it
to emphasize his word and prevent Grace from resisting because business is about to getting
serious and dangerous. Billy finally sat down with Tommy and got the first thing he wanted. So,
for now, see how calm and normal his voice sounds. Tommy doesn't even care what Billy says, with
kind of "come to the point" introduction here. That's also a move he makes to take the lead in
the conversation. You can observe that most of the high value people go their own way rather
than responding. They do it because they want to take the lead. Billy Kimber is attacking
here. The main purpose is to confuse them. And this is actually a very effective phrase in
this case, but should be used more carefully or not at all. Because he is also there with a
group of people and can easily be reflected back when one of them interfere. And also, notice
here, Tommy's eyes are locked Billy Kimber since the beginning of the conversation. Here comes
one of the little details that makes this scene a masterpiece. Look at how Arthur bows his head
slightly to Tommy for permission to reply. Then, Tommy approves with his eyes while he still
maintains eye lock. Then Arthur answers. And look at the way he raises his head as he answers.
This scene is really well thought and purposefully acted that way. Because here, Arthur's bowing
his head while turning towards Tommy shows that he acknowledges Tommy's authority, and
while raising his head while answering Kimber symbolizes that he does not acknowledge Kimber's
authority. Look at how his chin is positioned, If the chin is lifted above the horizontal,
it means the person is displaying superiority, fearlessness, or arrogance. Because lifting
your chin above, allows your eyes look down on the other person. Looking down is an
idiom but the working way is the same as how it calls. Really really well acted
scene here with amazing little details. An insulting smile. Look at his hands. He's
fidgeting and touching himself with clenched fists. It is a sign of anger or frustration. It's
a common gesture for those who try to surpress their emotions even though their facial expression
remains relaxed and neutral. He didn't even pay attention and try to answer John. He just went his
own way, and basically said you're worthless here. Pointing finger again. He started
to get a little more aggressive now. The calm and cautious(kaShes) demeanor displayed
by the other party began to annoy Billy, and he became angry again as he did when he can't
get what he want. The loudness of his voice, his finger pointing and the sentences he utters
are literally the explosion of what's inside of him. He's on fire, like a bomb ready to explode
right now. And look at how calm Tommy is. He just answers with a lower voice and continues to
observe and threat him with eye lock. Responding with lover voice, is crucial here. You can observe
this in real life and moreover, this tactic is used many times in Peaky Blinders as well. See
how Alfie Solomons de-escalated the tension with a lower voice response. Tommy does the same
here to control the tension of the conversation. He basically made Billy look like a little angry
kid who has no control over of his emotions. In the other hand, Tommy is acting like he's a boss
who way above of him. Being nonreactive is one of Tommy's the most used tricks as i told in my
another video. Because when you are nonreactive, you look in control, you look more dominant and
higher statue because that gives the vibes of, you're nonreactive, you are confident because
you have the ability to handle what's going on currently. And that attitude of Tommy is one
of the reasons why Kimber is so upset. He came here to destroy, to have a fight, to show the
consiquences of what Tommy did before, but he was always calm and nonreactive like he is greater
than him. He clenched his fists, fidgeting again and taking a deep breath. And here is a scorn...
They are all signs of being nervous, frustrated, angry and agression. Every second of this
nonreactiveness, pisses him off so much... He's like, he's waiting for one wrong word to come out
of their mouth to burn the place to the ground. Really good piece of a masterpiece acting here.
And Tommy paid back. He exploded in the first second his authority was
questioned. A very big sign of insecurity here. Remember the words of Tywin Lannister. Instead
of saying "i am the king or the boss whatever", act like the king or the boss and let
people feel it, not just hear it. Otherwise, you will only humiliate yourself and
show your insecurities. In real life, it's pretty much working like that too. If
you're telling you're superior in anything, you should stop that immediatelly. Because
you are just telling how insecurity you are. Instead of appearing superior, be superior
and make them feel that in their bones. Now, this body language tells us a lot, I will
give you some very important information about communicating with people by diving deep
into that. But before we move on, please leave a like to help us if you liked the video.
Now, notice how he stand up from the chair. This is a high status stand up. Having the
hands on the table, or on the chair that, is a part of the table obviously, is a claiming of
the table ownership and an expression of dominance over those at the table. You may see hosts in
meetings, office bosses, CEOs, politicians, or any other high-status people put their hands on
the table when they sit down or get up, and some even put their feet up to the point of arrogance.
Because having your hands, or your any other part, on the table conveys the message that "the table
is in my hands, and i am superior to all of you" You can see Tommy standing up this way at
nearly every table in Peaky Blinders he sat. In this scene, Kimber was doing exaclty
the high statues stand up with putting his hands on the chair's arms. Also it's
not just about the table meetings. You can observe the meaning of this in many aspects
of life. The reason of this: Touching means, claiming. People tend to touch, put his foot
or place his arms around what they have, because then they think that, what they
touch is an extension of them. For example, let's say you're taking a picture
of a friend who bought a new car, how do you think he would pose? he leans on, puts
one hand on the hood, puts his foot on the wheel, right? because the car is now his new property.
Or lovers, when they in public, hold hands, put their arms around each other just to show to
competitors that they have claim on that person... The next thing about this scene is,
his body position. As he stands up, he spreads his arms to the sides to take up more
room and most importantly, leans forward a little closer to Tommy's zone. This is a simple but very
important and common power move. Let me give you a short but very important another information.
According to an experiment conducted at the Zurich zoo in the 1950s, it turned out that many
animals have a spherical territory that moves with them. And also, it's noticed that there is
a second territory, a bubble of space, which serves a spesific function. It's called escape or
flight zone. For example, a prey does not start to run the moment it sees the predator. Because a
predator away from its range so it's not a threat to it. However, as the hunter gets closer and
crosses the line, the level of danger increases and after a certain amount of time, the prey
starts to run. Because now, it crossed the line and started to be a threat. As humans, we protect
ourselves with the same instincts. In physcology, It's called personal space and consist of 4
different layers. And we try to adjust our distance according to the threat level of the
other person. While we can easily be side by side with those we trust, we prefer to stay away
from dangerous individuals. In this scene, it is possible to say that Kimber is at Tommy's social
zone which is a safe section for Tommy, but very close to the upper limit of his personal zone.
So, with leaning in, he threats Tommy by getting closer his personal zone or even crosses the line.
And in order to increase the level of threat, he spreads his arms to look bigger. You may not
have cared much when you first watched it, but it is a very important gesture used to threaten
the other side both here and in real life, and you learned the reason earlier as well. Talking
loud and finger pointing again... Look at how Arthur and Jon avoided eye contact. They started
to acknowledge Kimber's authority. But Tommy, still maintains eye contact. He exaclty knows what
he is doing and has full control over of his body. Tommy realized that Kimber's anger was about
to make things worse. So he remains calm and continues to speak in a lower tone,
but still confidently and clearly. He also saw the starvation of his ego as a result
of his observations. That's why he decided to seem like, he acknowledged his superiority by
calling him "Mr. Kimber" twice. If you noticed, he never called him as "Mr. Kimber"
before. It's also important that the first thing he told him was that he was
at war with the Lee family. In short, he offers him the strategy of "the
enemy of my enemy is my friend". And Kimber takes a step towards Tommy again.
This is a proof that he is intrested in that. A harsh swallow here. A sign of stress. Tommy is
at the most important moment of the conversation right now and he knows every word that comes
out of his mouth is very very important. Really proffecional acting again. Eyelids are the part
of body language that the person controls the least. So it conveys subconscious responses very
accurately. And it seems like Tommy just doesnt like and disgusted them having a lot of kin.
He put his hand back on the table in a slightly shy way when he made an obvious offer to him. He
basically says I'm at the table as well. And here, I will give you a genious trick that will be
very useful in your real life. If you've noticed, Tommy is making the offer with Kimber's interests
in mind first. He tells them about their troubles, and how he can help them by solving them.
They didn't even talked about Tommy's own earnings from the deal yet. You should do the
same. When you're about to make an offer or request to someone, you should always start
with the other person's earnings. This will increase the chance of you getting what you want.
Because otherways, why people want to help you? for what? because of they love you? Meeh, it can
work if you have enough luck. But till where? till when? Just do it more professionally
and always start with the other's earnings. Eye lock, which is a sign of threatning again.
Tommy decided to feed Kimber's ego a little more. He calls him "Mr. Kimber", expresses
his admiration and praises his success. Tommy made him feel superior on purpose.
He tried to let his guard down by praising, and now he's trying to hit the last blow in a
very sneaky way. The metaphor of "working with you". Really clever. Look at how he raised up his
chin and started to look down on them. And yeah, again, he reminds everyone that he is superior
to them. And he wants him to bow his head as a punishment for him daring to say that.
Tommy knows that right now he has to make him sure that he accepts Kimber is superior to
them. He tried to do this by raising him without lowering himself already, but Kimber decided to
lower him instead by making him bowing his head. His brother knew the meaning of this, so he wanted to do it but Tommy
refused and gave him what he wanted. Tommy knows how to deal with such arrogant,
angry and currently superior people. And in the end of the day, he got what
he wanted. Everything went as he planned. Normally, we watch TV series or movies in
"autopilot" mode, but when we go into detail, we can easily see how well the actors assimilate
the mood of the character they're acting, and their success in reflecting this to the screen.
I am sure all of the people behind the cameras, were aware of these body language gestures
and i can't even predict how many times they re-shot these scenes just to give the perfect
vibe of it. The characters body languages shows gestures that you can often see in people
who experience these emotions in real life. The types of the characters are also the
typologies that you can often see in politics and palace people. Each of them uses their own
special strategies. For example, Tommy uses 12 laws from Robert Greene's "48 laws of power" book
in this scene. For example rule number one: Never outshine your master. He made Kimber feel superior
by bowing down to him. Another example law 8: get people to come to you, use bait if necessary. He
took the advantage by making Kimber come to him, into his own space. He fixed his race to bait
him. If Tommy had gone to Kimber's place, maybe he would have been shot already. I wont
count all of them in this video because I am about to make a serie of it. So you can be subscribe
to be aware of the upcoming videos. Please dont forget to leave a like and let me know what do you
think in the comments. See you in the next one.
