Billie Eilish on Going to Space, Writing Songs with Finneas, New Album & Her Bucket List

our first quest tonight is an enormously talented singer and songwriter she's the youngest artist ever to win the grammy for record of the year and album of the year her latest is called happier than ever and her world tour starts february 3rd in new orleans please welcome billy eilish [Applause] [Music] [Applause] a lot of a lot of your uh your admirers have been waiting since like uh early this morning for you to have they really yeah they have is it strange for you when you have um people who are really excited about seeing you who are older than you are no i love you like it i don't know you know why i asked that so you think they're all like old well there's one lady who looks like she's 12 but she's a grandmother she told me but um this one here oh my god you know why i asked it actually because uh well first of all i drove by and i saw him and secondly i found that as i get older and like i'll be like i'll have to be at a game and i'm like oh i love this guy whatever like and you realize he's 21 it seems stupid when you're 53. are you 53 i am congratulations thanks yeah i'm hoping to make it a 63. um no but i very much like it like because it's been this way since the beginning i mean even when i was like 15 and 14 you know touring and doing stuff there would be people in meet and greets that were like in their 40s and i loved that like they were genuine fans and it made me very happy good well it's good that you like it so hi guys did you see william shatner went into space no yeah william shatner who was captain kirk on star trek oh yes would you go into space i would literally rather do anything else me too i hate the idea same with like going on a ferry for like months oh anything else i'd rather do yeah i would have no interest in going to space i don't know why but i guess it's so you can talk somebody asked me once i my mom was like so we got an email from from a girl that i used to know mom and her mom was like would billy want to go in space and like sing and i was like no literally now did this woman have any connection to the space industry or was she just wondering i couldn't tell you it didn't make any sense to me i love those people too and i was just like why would you ask me that you uh you you know i saw the james bond movie and you have the big song which is a song that's been out for a while because um i guess the song came out and then the movie didn't come out yep and then the song won a grammy and next the song could win an oscar quite possibly which you would take one of those right do you i know you made it you made a couple of documentaries do you want to make movies do you want to make like scripted films i want to do something in the world of it um i just love like cinematography is just really something i admire like i wouldn't necessarily want to like act and stuff i mean if if something came along that was that felt right then yeah but um yeah i used to want to make a movie really bad like that was like a thing that i was like planning on doing and just who knows when um they asked you to write a song for james bond did you know the history of like what a kind of a huge deal that is yes yeah well recently like adele did one and um in the you know carly simon and paul mccartney all of these different and then do you listen to all of those songs before setting out to write one for yeah well i mean i knew all of them because i've loved bond since forever and so has my entire family and the world oh so you really knew i loved dude skyfall and i know that was more of a recent one but skyfall was like my favorite song in the world like the song itself i loved that song loved the movie um and i've said this before but years before the bond song our song was going to be anything was even like a topic of discussion with us um we would do it as a songwriting exercise me and my brother so we would like to pretend to write a bond song well like years ago we would just be like let's let's like sit down and like do some chords that feel like bond-esque it's do you guys do that regularly is that something you come up with assignments for yourself yeah it's a songwriting technique it's like it's really helpful to have like perimeters of like what you can do how did you learn about that did you who came up with that idea um i mean my mom taught us a lot because my mom has written songs for her whole life and she's the one that taught us how to write songs actually and so she taught like a songwriter she's right there it's like a homework assignment yeah and that's my dad but my mother used to lay on the ground and pretend to be dead until we cried i only mentioned it because she's asked me to stop telling that story but um wow so that's oh you really had to jump on all this stuff it makes me feel like i'm way behind with my children you uh so then you write the song it's in the movie and it must be exciting to see it in the movie itself to be part of these bond movies you went to this they had a huge premiere in london it was like it seemed even bigger than it was and it was absolutely big because nobody is really doing anything like this right now yeah you met uh the royal family you i assume you got they read you the rules and all that stuff oh yeah you met them oh yeah there was a whole list of things did you pay attention to those rules you did not i had a feeling no but i tried to i was planning on it and they were just so normal like they were just they didn't make me feel like oh i'm scared i can't talk to them and they were they were like very question like they just complimentary and they had all these questions for me and they they were just very friendly and like funny and sweet i don't know i can't complain it was amazing how is your brother doing he's good he's good yeah he's good yeah you guys tired of each other yet you guys sick of each other we are we are the way that every pair of siblings are but also we're best friends so it's fine yeah well most siblings aren't best friends a lot of them will pull each other's hair true yeah we do that too though because we we despise each other at certain times i want to mention this book because uh this is uh a book called billy eilish and uh did you put this together i did you did this is photographs from your and stories and all sorts of things from your your life and um we have one will you put that up on the screen uh photo of uh your choir and uh let's find billy there because billy is the only one not oh god rule following is not your thing i guess [Laughter] did you were you did you get in trouble for that yeah yeah yeah yeah it was not yeah i did many things like that in choir and it was i mean i was the only person with like colored hair in the choir too they did not like me over there yeah and now you're the only one with a grammy probably right yeah it's a good battery i love that that choir was like literally my my best moments of my life for real i have something here that is um your bucket list that you wrote when you're 14. 12. oh 12. oh 2014. okay i was 12. so uh how about that jimmy you were 12 and 2000 were you in 2014. so old i can't even add it up do you wait really quick yeah uh-huh do you remember last time i was here yeah and you made me look a little stupid well yeah actually no but i didn't do it i thought it was funny because i was playing along and everybody thought i was actually serious and i didn't know anything but here's your quest okay okay all right go ahead okay good oh great so as i recall like you were unfamiliar with van halen i didn't know what there was a lot of things you asked and i was like i don't know and then everyone jumped down your throat like oh you know you should know it was funny i didn't really care but um okay i'm making these up on the spot okay good [Applause] do you know wait who has a better idea uh mommy do i know mommy sorry mommy i don't know anything when we
