our next guest is the psychopathic serial killer but not in real life he's that exclusively on the widely celebrated show you season three of you is on Netflix now please welcome Penn Badgley [Music] I have to tell you something Penn Badgley is a very strong name I mean you could be anything from a senator to a real estate agent with a name like that that's a wide spectrum yeah yeah is that a pen is that a family name because there aren't many there's no Gillette and that's kind of it right yeah I mean there's um well there's William Penn uh well there's a lot there's Sean Penn a lot of sure sure last name pen sure no it really comes from a tennis ball that's actually the the extent of the story I was I was I think about the size of a tennis ball that's what my mom said to my father bouncing a tennis ball and that was how it happened wow yeah good thing it wasn't a wiffle ball you would have a very dumb name or Dunlop that's the joke Dunlop yeah Dunlop or Wilson I guess or uh uh slazinger could have been your name you probably got the best of all the choices yeah I think so so your show also by the way is uh well not that your name is confusing it isn't the show name being you must be yes it's a pronoun problematic obstacle like people must say to you I love you on you I just get I just get you [Laughter] you're obviously the lead character on the show but then you're doing the the internal dial of the voiceover yeah the narration is it proper to call it narration it's narration it's I think it's it's a lot of narration it's more than that it's like it's I would say 80 of my lines if not more are are actually voice over so most days I go to work and I I actually don't have any lines often I'm just I'm just looking and then sometimes because the camera's so close to my my face while I'm having all these thoughts they can't even get a person in front of the camera so I'm just looking at x's on the map box of the camera and then and then my stand-in Danny is reading all the thoughts and an entire scene and sometimes it's like a four page scene and the people the other actors in the scene are like you know they've got pages of um whatever they're saying but sometimes it just actually just you know it's just a drone in the background while I'm thinking so it's a very it's like a it's very technical and um that's strange it it is it's straight it's I have grown to like it it's also it can be a bit isolating but it's also again the the highly technical dance with the with with the crew is actually something you don't get to do a lot as an actor and I really like that you have to time it all right very much go back and fit in the spaces well no actually I do the voiceover before Oh you do and it just works out magically we haven't messed with the formula it just works and it's a very different process yeah it's I heard you started on a children's radio station and in Seattle yeah actually my first shop was on a radio station in Seattle yeah it was not for children it was for um older men okay yeah like we played Sweet Home Alabama a lot okay yeah yeah but um What station was that well it was called Kid star I don't know that there was like maybe a thousand people who've heard of this and so it was like four kids all kids DJs I I mean DJs no so there were like I think behind the behind the veil it was it was all adults to be honest oh really no I mean it was like you know adults writing stuff in kid lingo well and then like the I think kids had a lot of input from what I recall I would do um I would do like a like a like a fake newscaster thing and and there was like storytelling and but there were no kid DJs it was how old were you at this time I mean I was 9 10 something like that I didn't even learn to read till I was 12. I'm sorry sorry but you look at you here and then would you did would you do appearances would you do the typical radio DJ stuff or ah did you like do you have to go out to like the carpet store and no treat your fans no no giveaway t-shirts or something it's more like it was more like a training grounds what about being like at home or in the car and then hearing yourself on the radio was that exciting it must have been I but like I can't dude I've been doing this for so long it's like that kind of stuff maybe has faded into Oblivion but yeah I'm sure I'm sure the first time I heard it I was stoked yeah yeah and that's it all right so you Jade quickly you get real yeah I mean it was it was 25 years ago so I I Jade over a quarter of a century I don't know why I remember every maybe it's because there weren't many of them I remember every Triumph from my childhood that's fair you know what it wasn't professional and I think that's where it just kind of like it just becomes this nebulous like oh yeah I've been working you know you oh I do want to mention quickly because uh this is something else I mean it shows the number one show on Netflix and that's a very big deal obviously but when you personalize it that's when it becomes something even more so and cardi B tweeted about you um she was excited because you mentioned her in a little chat you were having there and she used more O's M's F's you know usually she goes with the M's and the F's the most but the O's and the G's really shine through here he knows me uh that's that's cardi B I know that's no cardi Badgley perhaps maybe that's the first time I've gotten that and then you roll back and I didn't understand it well first of all you change your uh yeah this is the thing this is the thing that we have now me and why just I what what's going on there that's you know that's that's what the kids say that's an expression of it's it's it's when you're like oh oh I mean what what does one say I learned so hard tonight and then and then cardi B changed her thing and so anyway now that Netflix said petition to get cardi B to guest star on season four of you yeah and she said she's shutting it down I turn around and there stands you okay finish it off Netflix does that mean she's gonna be on the show well I I I I I don't know I mean I definitely can't say but there is actually I believe this is true there's an actual change.org petition oh really oh good that's good that's good changing the world President Biden should definitely get it you said I don't know I can't say it can't be both of those things though can it um I can't say because I don't know no I actually I actually don't know I'm not I don't know I'm not being let's have you know be fun cardi B kills Emily and Paris right something of a right all right think about it all right well it's great to have you here Penn Badgley everybody season three of you is on Netflix rings remember every button one of your enemies gets destroyed
