looking at the ssds and you see these big read and write speeds what if i told you that the read and write speeds of an ssd are pretty much irrelevant and there's so much more important specs that you need to look or find of an ssd when choosing one so in this video i'm going to explain the specs of an ssd i'm going to give you some helpful tips how to choose one and to save money and also give you the big branding of ssds gaming professional industrial ssds like this means absolutely nothing there is no such thing as a gaming ssd that's different to industrial ssds or create ssds than that so this gaming over here like this gaming ssd is absolutely it doesn't mean anything okay it doesn't mean that you can't do any of the other things and vice versa next of all the read and write speed of an ssd now we see like some of the ssds like this one over here is one of the fastest in fact this is i think the fastest ssd in the world like it boasts of over 7000 megabytes per second in fact it's 7.3 gigabytes per second not gigabits gigabytes per second which is insane speeds of file transfer and and like this is as good as it gets the speeds aren't actually so relevant because we see that the hardware can give us the speeds like read and write speed of 7000 megabytes per second but actually the software can't utilize it and our files aren't big enough to actually fully utilize it now this is 99 of the people in the world right now i know there's one percent that actually you know can utilize them and they have massive files but these are exemptions especially now when we got pci 5.0 around the corner if you want to see that or hear about it hit subscribe button things coming out soon but you might feel like oh no i'm getting slow i need faster speeds of an ssd so here's the truth our software like windows and our programs aren't fully saturating even the pci 3.0 bandwidth which is around 3500 megabytes per second never mind the pci 4.0 which is double the bandwidth and now pca 5.0 which is even higher speeds so don't be intimidated by the pcie generations and the read and write speeds now in order for me to explain this further we need to take a step back and really understand how ssds work basically ssds have chips on them like if we take this one over here you can see a chip over here and a chip over here and a controller over here so basically each of these chips have capacity different sizes of chips you might have them on one side you might have them on the back side as well and sometimes just on the top side now each of these chips have basically cells they're ssd cells and think of this as like a little cup and you pour the data in the cup can be filled and emptied only certain amount of times compared to the hard drives which have spinning discs and they can be basically written over endless amount of times until some kind of physical component of the moving compartments actually fail but ssds have cells and they can only be filled and emptied certain amount of times now how do you know which spec shows you how many times can each cell be emptied and filled again this is where the terabyte written spec comes in now this is not often advertised like on the top of the ssd terabytes per written instead you see 7 000 megabytes per second on like the headlines but actually terabytes written is i think the most important spec of an ssd because that shows you how long the ssd will last and how much can you use it so very commonly what you see is something like in the samsung ssd that the one terabyte size of an ssd will be 600 terabytes written like endurance or warranty it is over five years so what that means that over the five years or over the lifespan of this ssd you can rewrite or fill the drive if it's a one terabyte in size you can fill it 600 times and empty it as well but these numbers might be a little bit confusing and you're like so so 600 terabytes like what does it mean to me if i'm every day using it what does it mean if a one terabyte drive is 600 terabytes written rated it means that every day for the five years you can fill 33 percent of the drive's capacity and then delete it again so if it's one terabyte in size you can write 303 gigabytes of files on it and delete it every single day for the next five years the drive will basically you know start to have errors or the cells have been you know worn out if the drive is two terabytes in size and let's say it still has 1 200 terabytes written then it still means that it's you know 33 percent of the drive capacity to be filled every single day so 660 gigabytes every single day you can write on it delete it that you can do for the next five years the storage workflow now if you're not a creator your storage workflow might be a little bit different but basically this storage workflow applies to every single person whatever you are doing with your files and things like that your storage workflow ideally should be slotting into four drives your os and program drives your project drive they can be many as well your cache drive and your archive drive now this is the ideal world but don't worry if you're just running less than that now most of the drives on the market have the same terabyte written rating that starts from the samsung 980 pro which is like the bar that everyone tries to reach or go over they have 600 terabytes written for one terabyte drive and 1 200 terabytes written for two terabytes of drive and the same is with the samsung evos drives or western digital black sn850 drives and sabrine rocket drives they are a little bit higher they're 100 terabytes right higher so 700 terabytes written for one terabyte and double that on the two terabyte drives and the same with crucial drives and any other drives that you see out there but there are two drives that absolutely blow my mind and so if you're asking me which is the best drive like full stop then it's this one over here it's called the seagate fire cuda 530 series pcie 4.0 drive not only is it blazing fast like as fast as it can get it also has double the terabytes of written rating than the samsung drives for example if you take this drive and the samsung drive the samsung drive can rewrite about 33 percent of the drive's capacity every single day whereas this drive over here that goes up to four terabytes in size they can all rewrite every single day 70 of the drive's capacity so it means that for a one terabyte drive every single day you can write on the drive 700 gigabytes of files for the next five years and you'll be completely fine that's insane that's absolutely insane and that is a very important factor if you're a creator working with extremely large files maybe you're a movie maker and you are taking in some big files from your cinema cameras or red cameras that have terabytes and terabytes of files for example then you need a drive that can be written over a lot of times if you know you're working with big files this is a very very important spec for your pc and if you want the absolute best then this is the one there isn't drives with that speed four terabytes in size which is insane so this drive is great for your project drive where you put all the active files and a lot of big files get transferred over to this drive because this drive can handle the terabytes written over and over and over and over and over again now for os drive you don't really need a drive that fast because there isn't that many big files that get written over and over and over again that's why for an os drive you can go pca 3.0 and even sata drives like this kingston drive or saving rocket drives like this one or some of the other drives from team group for example there's a lot of the drives i'm personally using now for crash drives you want to go for quite a high terabyte written as well depending which programs and workflow you're using some of the cache files can be very high and very low so you just know your workflow which it is but often cache files and temporary files you know your cache ssd there are files over there that can be like stored there temporarily and deleted and written over and deleted again which often makes a lot of files go through that drive as well so high terabyte written spec for that drive is good as well in terms of your archive drive i often recommend just in hard drive but hard drives make noise and they're a bit louder than just normal ssds but if you want an ssd we're going to be using this in a build in a moment using a s8 ssd for your archives as well which gives you plenty of speed is quite fast like about 500 megabytes per second read and write speech which are still faster than hard drives it's very good to use for archive drives because archive drives don't get written over that many times they're more like files just stay there and that's it the only thing is there isn't like very large capacity ssd sizes so if you want a large archived drive then it's better you go with hard drives and if you're a professional creator you should probably go with nas now if you've noticed i haven't talked about this drive over here and this is team group t-force guardia c-440 it's also pcie 4.0 drive it's not as fast as this seagate fire cuda 530 drive what this drive over here absolutely shines with is its terabytes written rating now i didn't believe it so i had to go and check it again but this drive and there is also a z440 version of this but basically they are the same spec drives around 5000 megabytes per second speeds for transfers but the terabytes written rating listen to this is 1 800 terabytes written per 1 terabyte drive and two terabyte drive is double that now that is 98.6 of the drive's capacity every single day for the next five years so to put it in perspective it's basically the whole drive the whole capacity of the drive can be filled every single day and deleted again for the next five years 986 gigabytes every single day that's insane that's absolutely amazing so if you want something a little bit more affordable let's say you don't need the 7 000 megabytes per second speed you might go with this one because that is a very good drive as you can see it will last you a very long time especially if you're working on project large files you need to write over and over and over again it's insane the only downside is that there isn't a four terabyte version of this whereas you know the sea gate over here has four terabytes this caps out at two terabytes there's one terabyte and two terabyte versions of these drives so hopefully now you can see that the read and write speeds of an ssd aren't the most important especially if you are a creator if you're just an everyday usual and you don't use big files and your ssds don't get written over it's not that important of a spec for example gamers and just people who use laptops or other files every day it's not that big of a deal so two of
