welcome back to team O'Neill I'm Wyatt we recently had some good questions about some of the more tactical driving stuff that we get involved with just to preface that you know we've been training for over two decades now most of America's most elite kind of silent professionals the guys and girls that are out there in parts of the world that you wouldn't want to be doing things that we can't talk about and that's all that I'm really gonna be able to say about that but what we started getting a couple questions on is kind of this bug out vehicle sort of a tactical vehicle if you were in some kind of a you know natural disaster or something more man-made happen or you know hey we're in uncertain times right now things are happening if there is you know some rioting or whatever might be going on there's you know hey some big socio-economic collapse whatever it might be there's some really funny information out there as far as what sort of vehicle you'd want you know if you were in an emergency in a city somewhere what kind of vehicle are you gonna grab to get yourself or your family out of there and you know get yourself away from danger to safety hopefully you know if you google you know top five survival vehicles or bug out vehicles or any of this stuff it's all cartoon stuff I mean if it looks good on Instagram that's not the vehicle that you want to be in and trust yourself and your family's security to in an emergency situation especially if there is that kind of human violence element you know if you're gonna be operating in bad terrain if you're in you know down in Mexico there's some cartel stuff going on whatever might be happening if things go a little weird whatever part of the world you're living in there's a couple of really basic kind of Universal guidelines to what sort of vehicle you're gonna want to go for we usually keep pretty quiet about some of the stuff that we do up here but it seemed like a good time to make just a quick video and talk about a few of those factors so that you can make good quality decisions so the number one thing you looking for in kind of a tactical vehicle or something that you're going to be moving around and potentially in dangerous environments with is low-vis gray vehicle not necessarily you know the color gray although that's a wonderful color to select but basically the idea of blending in with your surroundings in a very common vehicle for whatever part of the world you're in and having nothing really attention-getting about that you don't have you know anything really unique modifications decals that kind of stuff you know if hey if all the cars are dirty your car's dirty if all the cars are looking a certain way that's what you want to be doing and attract as little attention as humanly possible you know this is where the you know Instagram survival vehicle crew is probably throwing stuff at the screen right now hey we're sorry everybody's got to have a hobby and it's cool and if you love off-roading that's wonderful but if you're in a potentially dangerous situation the last thing in the world that you would want is you know hey something like an earth roller or a sports mobile or one of these six-figure off-road camping rigs or you know you know a defender 90 with a roof tent and max tracks and jacks and shovels and gas cans and all of that because you're really just a target you're gonna stand out and you're going to attract a lot of attention that you don't want because people are gonna want your vehicle they're gonna want the things that are inside your vehicle where if you're in something a lot more mellow a lot more nondescript and you can just hate mind your own business everybody's mind and there's you go your own way that's how you want to get through these situations you know you can Google most popular vehicle in the United States or Mexico or Africa or the Middle East or wherever you are and you want to be kind of on that list you know here in the US if something goes down you want somebody to be like whoa there goes a white sedan or you know a black sport utility or whatever the less information they can gather by seeing your vehicle the better off you're going to be if you can't even tell what kind of car it is because it's so vague all the better there are a ton of really fantastic and really capable options within that kind of nondescript gray vehicle and you can do some modifications and we'll talk about that in a second but the whole idea is to not attract attention and to blend in not by being you know black multicam with all this you know ladder racks and LED light bars and all of that and you know hey tactical know that the more tactical thing to do is to be invisible to blend in to be actually driving something that's fairly common for the part of the world that you're in so accomplishing that very easy to do the second thing is select a vehicle that you're mechanically sure of that you are not going to have a problem with under you know normal or slightly harsh driving conditions that means if you're in a city somewhere are things start to get a little weird you're looking for a new ish vehicle you know I'm sure if you're watching this you could probably walk around an airport parking lot and figure out hey these couple cars are probably gonna make it if I needed to get somewhere you know in a hurry for a while whatever it might be you can tell what's mechanically really solid looking and new low miles maintained versus you know something that's got a lot of miles on it it's got a leaky tire it hasn't had a timing belt that hasn't had a water pump it hasn't had brake pads in awhile and spark plugs and tune-up stuff and whatever it might be basically if you're gonna be trusting your life to this vehicle you need that reliability stuff kind of out of the question you don't have time to be thinking about it or dealing with it sure in a pinch Drive whatever you can get behind the wheel of and again if you're acquiring this vehicle in an emergency older vehicles aren't gonna be a lot easier to get in and get moving without the key but still even within that realm pic we all know some brands are you know synonymous with reliability and being tough and being able to take some abuse where others might be a worse choice for you and the more modern and reliable and decent a vehicle is the better off you're gonna be that means if it's your vehicle hey keep a full tank of gas know how much air is in your tires keep up on your fluids make sure you're just doing the basic checklist it's not anything you know racecar stuff and rally cars and we could get into that a little bit but really it's just doing the basics right for your vehicle and staying on top of it so that you know if you need to get in and turn the key that thing's gonna move and it's gonna do what you need it to do hopefully for an extended period of time potentially over rough terrain that segways right into number three which is having some mild off-road capability via some ground clearance and hopefully some all-wheel-drive or potentially four-wheel-drive capability this doesn't mean that it needs to be you know mountain climbing full off-road capable locking differentials big tires and that kind of thing because everything is a compromise you know that's compromising your high speed cornering and mileage and some other things that we're gonna talk about later that are gonna be really important to you basically the litmus test of is this okay enough off-road is hey can you drive it up onto a curb can you drive it on the shoulder or on the grassy shoulder or through the median of a blocked highway or you know up and over some landscaping that you might find in suburbia whatever it might be most small sport utilities you know even though you know Subaru Outback is good to be pretty excellent for that it does not need to be a large truck certainly not anything that's jacked up and lifted and it's got a whole bunch of stuff going on you really just need to be able to do that mild off-roading and that all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive is going to really double the amount of traction that you have to push through some of those situations you know if you've got a front wheel drive Camry or rear-wheel drive BMW and you try and take it up over a curb somewhere you're probably going to get stuck you get that Drive tire in the air everybody know open differentials that one tire sits there and spins where you know mobility is survivability if you're all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle it's gonna push through that situation you're still moving so you know being mobile and just continuing forward backwards side to side anywhere being moving and fluidly flexible is the only way to kind of approach these situations as soon as you're stopped whether that's in traffic or stuck or whatever's going on and you're having to you know get on foot to get moving again your survivability rate goes way down in these situations that all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive is also a really big advantage if you need to be pushing or pulling things with your vehicle you know if there's some kind of a roadblock or a vehicle in your way and you can nose up to that and push you know another vehicle or a barrier or a dumpster out of your way all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive is the way to go for that versus again you know that Corolla or the BMW or some other two-wheel drive car you're compromising your ability to push and pull things you know if you you have a friend with you and they get stuck in a ditch you can tow them out you know anything like that where you need that traction that all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive is really really almost a necessity so a low-vis vehicle that you're mechanically sure of that's got some off-road capability number four automatic transmission we can't say this one enough there's a reason why most police and military are using automatic transmissions and there's you know many reasons for that number one is in any of these situations you need just easy get it in Drive and go you can get moving quicker you're not playing with any clutches and shifting and all of that you're free to do a lot more multitasking in the car should you as the driver need to be navigating or communicating or doing anything else that automatic transmission allows you to multitask somewhat another really nice benefit of an automatic is there's almost zero risk of stalling out you know can you stall an automatic yes but you got a lock that breaks up for a long time and that's the whole thing it's probably not gonna happen to you in a manual transmission vehicle you don't want to get stopped because the vehicle stalled out on you whether that was your own fault is a driver your foot slipped off the pedal somebody bumped into you you know with vehicle and vehicle contact and things like that whatever might be happening somebody you know bumps into you and the vehicle stalls because you're in Reverse or first and you're trying to get moving you know that's why they don't use them in demo derbies you know you're always in an automatic in a demo derby car or something like that so just something to be aware of stalling out is not worth it you know with an automatic if you're in and out of the vehicle it's really nice just be able to slap it in the park and bail out do what you need to do get back in slap it into drive and go you're not fiddling with neutral and trusting parking brakes trusting parking brakes is generally a bad idea especially on slippery roads or in older vehicles or whatever it is parking brakes kind of suck so automatics have that really good advantage of being able to leave it running in park and be able to do what you need to do and be quickly moving again and the other really nice thing about our automatic is anybody can drive it not everybody can drive a manual but your neighbors twelve-year-old kid can drive an automatic its brakes it's gas Park Drive you can talk them through it they can get moving so if you need to be in the passenger seat for some reason and the backseat for some reason whatever might be going on in the world around you you can deal with that and basically anyone can be driving that vehicle and you can rotate through that responsibility maybe you just need to go to sleep whatever it is if it's a manual transmission that might not be an option if it's an automatic it always is you know even if the driver goes down for some reason you know this is the thing we practice out here with some of the courses is just the driver down drill the driver becomes incapacitated passenger can reach over and operate on automatic transmission vehicle pretty easily can the passenger drive a manual from the passenger seat maybe but you know the risk of stalling out or having to just kind of run away into something or who knows what's gonna happen it's gonna probably be ugly on automatic is honestly not so bad alright so a low vis McKay nicholae solid vehicle with some mild off-road capabilities in an automatic transmission what's next it's kind of got to have four doors even if you're solo in a vehicle just having those back doors to be able to quickly access gear do different things pick up passengers drop off people and be able to do what you have to do the 4-door thing is kind of the only way to go anyone who's owned a two-door and you're tilting seats and getting the seatbelt thing out of the way and with people or equipment and trying to get in there and get stuff it's just not worth it so this is why is emo snow SUVs before door pickup trucks things like that but even you know a station wagon or a four-door sedan is perfectly acceptable but having four you know full functioning doors only is a good thing it only gives you more options for stowing gear and moving stuff around and getting people in and out and whatever it might be where a two-door vehicle of any kind is gonna probably be a problem for you unless again hey you're solo you live in Montana do whatever the heck you want get an ATV doesn't matter but if you're in and out of kind of populated areas and things like that and you're moving yourself and some equipment and some people around for doors is the only way to go so assuming you've met kind of some of those criteria the next thing you're looking for is simply range and the range that you can get on a full tank of fuel that's not necessarily the same as fuel economy there's a lot of you know full-size four-door pickup trucks that have terrible fuel economy but the range isn't so bad because they've got big hunk and gas tanks in them so do the math but don't just look at that miles per gallon because again most manufacturers do a decent job of saying it only gets 15 miles to the gallon we'll put a 15 gallon tank in it and you've still got 300 miles of range that 300 miles of range is kind of where you want to be if not better you know that's why you see people with the external gas tanks and carrying extra fuel and that kind of thing and there are good safe ways of carrying extra fuel but just know especially with ethanol gas think it was bad after a while if you're not using it everything else you got to refresh that supply most cars come with relatively good fuel range from the factory but you always want to know in the back of your head hey I've got 320 miles on a full tank of gas and you keep your gas tank pretty full because that gives you an idea of the range you might be able to go again mobility is survivability in a bad situation the gas stations aren't where you want to be you want to be moving away from those populated areas and a lot of times those closed gas stations are gonna be selling out and all the way way towards the bottom of the list we're getting now is performance it's one of the least important things that you really need to be thinking about is actual speed handling you know performance because that's not gonna be the situation you're in Hollywood kind of makes us think that other Aston Martin's and the Jaguars and or whatever that's not what you want that's the opposite of what you want you know most vehicles out there in the world can do 90 miles an hour on the highway pretty safely and that 90 miles an hour is kind of the threshold we're sure if your vehicle can't do 90 miles an hour safely on the interstate you've got a problem but chances are you've modified it to make it that way almost everything stock from the factory you can do 90 down the interstate not 60 miles an hour is a mile a minute so in an hour you're 60 miles away hopefully if you can get yourself out on the open road that 90 miles an hour you know it's a mile and a half a minute so even a five minute burst at 90 miles an hour you're achieving some good distance away from whatever the threat was so being able to carry that speed it's important but as long as you haven't done something dumb you should be fine you're good come on three you know much more important than that you know high speed actual performance it's kind of just your shape and size and again that off-road ability we all remember Katrina if you don't go back probably here on YouTube and you'll find some footage everybody trying to get out of the city trying to get out of the city the outbound highway lanes were all gridlocked bumper-to-bumper people sit and you know you'll see that one car and the inbound lane just cruising out of the city at 70 miles an hour the wrong way on the interstate cuz nobody was driving into New Orleans it's the same as you know hey New York City I asked Alex Hartman the president of Ridgeline who's our partner for a lot of the tactical stuff that we do hey if you're in you know New York City 9/11 scenario things are going wrong whatever might be happening what are you gonna do - get out of there he's like motorcycle first thing I'm getting on is the first bike I can find and I'm getting out of there and for really good reason you know if you're in Manhattan what there's five or six bridges and tunnels those are gonna be gridlocked instantly and your ability to negotiate in and around vehicles is gonna make the difference between hey whether you're moving or not it doesn't matter what kind of car you're in if you're locked in gridlock you know same with the forest fires and everything else you know you see just dumb people doing stuff you need to move around that and stay mobile thinking outside the box using the median using the grass using you know again that motorcycle mindset the lane split and driving between cars driving on the shoulder doing whatever you need to do especially in you know any city in the world motorcycle or even a moped or scooter or something like that is gonna be pretty easy to acquire even if you don't have the key you know even in a parking garage or something like that you'll be able to lay it down and probably get it out of there where you couldn't get a car out of a parking garage or something like that and again and in a smaller package you know motorcycle up here ATVs UTVs things like that are fantastic but even a smaller SUV or something like that you'll be able to fit into tighter places where you know hey a full-size truck or something like that you see the thing again online with the best survival vehicles Humvee absolutely not that's the last thing you would want in one of these situations and the last one on the list kind of number 8 going down the line is something that's pretty quiet again just the whole idea of being nondescript there's no reason in the world to have a very loud vehicle because that sound signature is just something that you don't need to deal with again a lot of people don't even think about it and this is you know we joke we're the people that are into the prepping and the crap hits the fan stuff and they're building these vehicles are way worse equipped then you know their neighbor who's just got you know the Honda CRV with run flat tires on it take that thing every day of the week because you know for all of the reasons we've already stated but that noise signature can be a big problem it depends what you're doing but you're driving at night you're in a bad part of town you're just trying to keep your head down and as low visit low signature as possible so the loud exhausts you know the diesel with the smoke stuff and the whatever you might you know again everybody's got to have a hobby and please we are not at all you know pooh-poohing any of this stuff if you've got the off-road campers and the lift kits and you're into that life and you've got the all the gear stuck to the side of it that's awesome and we hope you're having a lot of fun with that you know looking back again you know more global war on terror stuff there's a big reason why you know most of the top you know more elite u.s. teams we're shipping over US market pickup trucks in Afghanistan instead of running you know the diesels and the sound signature was a big part of that because you know the gas v6 motor is just quieter and you can get around and do a lot of different things that's why the same guys are looking at hybrid stuff and the electric bikes and all of that as you're looking into it sound is a big part of it and you don't need to be you know trying to sneak up on bad guys in the middle of night to appreciate that again look right here in North America if you're driving through there's a lot of stuff going on right now even here in you know the states but certainly down into Mexico Central and South America you're cruising through you're lost you get into somewhere you know you don't want to be just having a nice quiet car and being able to putt through and do your thing is way better the quiet vehicle also allows you to drive pretty quickly where a loud vehicle if you're getting on it it's gonna be turning people's heads they're gonna be looking you know if you've got a v8 or something like that you know people can't help it it just happens especially around a lot of buildings where that sounds just reflecting in the city having a quiet car you'll be able drive hard and nobody's really good I didn't notice or care so that's all we got for you hopefully you found this informative if you guys have any questions on this or anything more on the tactical kind of offensive defensive side of how some of the stuff that we do up here behind closed doors feel free to ask and we'll answer as many of those as we can again if this is a topic or kind of a road you'd like to go down we can get Alex and Rudy and the guys from Ridgeline a little more involved get them in on some videos they are much more able to answer some of your more technical questions about especially being in bad places overseas because that is what they do really useful if you're planning on doing some traveling if you're getting out there into some questionable parts of the world whatever you might be into it's nice to have some of these skills to fall back on so you feel comfortable you know you end up in the wrong part of town something's going on you feel like somebody's following you or whatever it might be it's nice to have a plan and at least to have thought of this stuff ahead of time because if you're just making it up on the moment you're not gonna be that well off versus if you've at least visualized it and heard from some experts and you've got an idea what you're looking for and what you want to do that's not gonna be such a big deal and you'll be able to get out of those situations unscathed so thanks as always for watching if you're into this or some high speed driving content off-roading you know getting the most out of some pretty stock standard vehicles that's kind of what we do up here at Tim O'Neil if you'd be interested in doing some driving yourself we're running courses up here full-time year-round at our campus in New England snow in the winter gravel in the summer off-road trails six hundred acres of private terrain so if you've got a group or you've got some specific needs you'd like to talk about please get in touch with us anytime and we'd be happy to have you out here to do some driving if you got a kick out of this hit that like hit the subscribe do what you can't helps us out a lot hopefully we see you up here sometime until then have fun be safe and we'll catch you next time [Music] you
