BEING "ON TIME" IN A STATE OF EMERGENCY | Dr. Haynes

[Music] [Music] my beloved friendship west family and all who comprise our larger global family i can't tell you how much i miss you god i do i miss you a whole lot and we've really been looking forward i've been looking forward to our reopening and man i miss you all so much i miss the fellowship that is unique to friendship west the love that we share and exchange and engage in when we are in each other's presence i miss the kids oh my god i miss the kids so much i miss all of you and that's why we are targeted this coming sunday uh the 12th of september the sunday after labor day for our reopening i want to thank dr kevin brown and pastor durr and all who worked with them in making sure that we would be ready this coming sunday to reopen unfortunately we're not going to be able to because of the numbers sadly we see what's happening in school districts and we are in a state texas that is one of the worst in the country which means we're one of the worst in the nic in the world when it comes to [Music] persons contracting the virus not only that but when it comes to a person's dying because of the virus the virus is is is spreading and people are dying steel people are getting sick steel and [Music] i just felt it would be irresponsible to make a decision to reopen at this time when we are still in the fight of our lives and this is a decision that is literally a matter of life or death and so it hurts because i was really looking forward to this reopening but the more i study the stats most importantly the more i listen to the spirit the more it convinced me that this is not the time for us to reopen i do promise that we will continue to listen to the spirit pay attention to the science and the stats and as we do that we will continue to re-evaluate and make a decision that will be healthy for all of us so in the meantime please mask up don't fall for this political okeydoke where it's a political issue in the meantime please maintain social distance in the meantime do what is necessary to protect yourself yeah the vaccine yeah keep your immune system strong do what is necessary to keep you safe i've been to too many funerals in the last 19 months i've had to do too many virtual hospital visits this is serious and so part of my job description as a pastor is a shepherd try to feed you this sunday and subsequent sundays but also have to protect it comes to our walk with christ so i asked everyone let's set the stage for what we're about to receive by preparing your hearts and minds for prayer dear heavenly father come to you today saying thank you thank you for blessing us thank you for watching over us thank you for loving us i ask that you continue to move within our lives the way that you have said and designed for us then father i ask that you increase our giving give us the ability to tithe better than the father because we know tithing is what you ask of us but if you increase our ability to tithe then you're increasing our faith continue to move in our ways that that only you can therefore there's so much going on in this world so many uh uh incidents that are happening that father from the covet from from the national disasters then the father but i know that it's your will and your will will be done so let us continue to give our hearts to you continue to to lean on you then the father because one thing we are still here so nothing that we went through has taken us away you have set the stage for us to continue to move forward to receive you each and every day because tomorrow is not promised but a day with you is so let us continue to to be vessels that you can use to to reach out to others to touch others to help others to to love others in the father let us find the accountability in ourselves to be strong to be faithful to be smart to be wise to continue to be blessed by you so today i say thank you for what we're about to receive so let us give cheer and joy to your name at all times in all ways so there are so many that have less god i ask that you continue to bless them i ask that you forgive us for our sins then father for we have done wrong let us do better let us connect with one mighty god we serve god is good and we are excited about how amazing and wonderful god is god comes through on god's promises when god makes a promise listen god writes a check called promise and you cash it by faith so god promised you that god would take care of you god promised you that god would make a way for you god promised you to open up a door for you god promised you i don't know about you but i'm glad to know that i serve a god who can keep god's promises with god likes a god can keep god's promises hallelujah hallelujah ah hallelujah hallelujah yes lord yes lord thank you so much y'all y'all killed it y'all just blessed us so much what a joy and delight it is to uh greet all of you i do it with the love of the lord and the joy of jesus christ i have missed you so much but i'm so excited and delighted to be back guess all to say uh or remix jay-z allow me to reintroduce myself my name is haynes h to the a y but seriously i'm very glad to be back and glad to see well i wish i could see all of you but i hope you can at least see me i was hoping that we would of course gather but because of the stats and because of the facts and listening to our savior in the spirit uh we feel that now is not the appropriate time we will continue to monitor all that is going on i think all of you know and please if you are in the state of texas florida hear me well our two states account for one-fourth of the infections of everybody in this country and that says a lot about the governor governors of these states and so we pray for them that god would give them direction that they would follow but in the meantime if they won't follow it please make sure that you mask up social distance please do whatever you have to do to take care and to stay safe this is a very dangerous time we find ourselves in and so please make sure that you take care and stay safe i want to in these uh sunday share with you from a theme our theme this month has to do with being accountable and so i want to uh this month use as i guess what i'm calling a topic for the month uh getting out of your way so you can get in good trouble getting out of your way so you can get into good trouble and so i want to in this service look at esther chapter 4 esther chapter 4 and beginning at verse 13 we find the words of our text for this message esther chapter 4 beginning at verse 13 from the message translation of the hebrew bible hear now god's word mordecai sent her this message don't think that just because you live in the king's house you're the ones you who will get out of this alive if you persist in staying silent at a time like this help and deliverance will arrive for the jews from someplace else but you and your family will be wiped out who knows maybe you were made queen for just such a time as this i want to put a tag on this text and for a few moments with your prayers i'd like to use as a subject from which to share being on time in a state of emergency being on time in a state of emergency so glad to see all of you in the zoom zoom room god bless you it's good to see y'all that makes my heart happy and my soul sing being on time in a state of emergency intersections can be dangerous especially during an insufferable storm yes intersections to be imprisoned in an intersection in the midst of a storm it can be dangerous if not deadly this past week i had the privilege of sharing at the school where i am uh working on my phd degree in african-american preaching and sacred rhetoric i flew up uh earlier this week and then upon flying back i found myself getting in my seat on the plane and as i sat in my window seat there was a sister who evidently was going to be seated right next to me and she was struggling with her luggage that she was trying to place in the overhead bin i got up out of my seat and inquired could i help her her response i won't forget was this yes mama can use some help mama has been through a lot and so i said well god bless you i'll handle it from here i helped her with her luggage put it in the overhead bin and then i went to my seat next to the window when when she sat down i asked her if i could help her with anything else she said oh no mama is just fine because god is good well i knew i had a talker and i was not really in the mood for a conversation but i did not want to be rude and so i simply said yes god showed no fear she said you sound like you know but god i'm talking about and i said i believe i do and then i picked up my book to make sure that my body language conveyed that this was not going to be an ongoing conversation during this plane ride from indianapolis to dallas fort worth but of course she ignored my evident body language and she said young man and that blew me away because she kept referring to herself as mama she calls me a young man and let's be real y'all she did not look much older than me even behind the mask but she kept referring to herself as mama and referring to me as young man well i was not going to argue with her if she wants to call me a young man cool in the gang and so she called me young man she kept referring to herself as mama and then she made this statement and unpacked it in a story that was so moving and powerful i had to immediately download it on my mental computer and now i want to symonically print y'all a copy let me share with you what mama shared with me mama testified she said that she had been caught up in the storm called ida hurricane idol which wreaked havoc from louisiana up through the eastern seaboard the northeastern seaboard of this country and she said that she got caught in the storm by being hit by the outer bands listen to what she says she says i was caught in a storm but god is good here's how she unpacked that statement with this story mother said that she was driving trying to escape hurricane ida and while driving trying to escape hurricane ida she immediately found herself pushed by the wind because she was on what is referred to in meteorological circles as the outer bands which means it's not the eye of the storm you're not in the midst of the storm but on the outer portions of the storm and the winds are still treacherous and tricky the winds are still wicked and the rain is still beating you find yourself maybe subjected to what tornadoes and so she testified that there on the outer bands her car was pushed here it is into an intersection she did not want to go into the intersection but her car parenthetically was a beautiful maserati a maserati and this maserati was pushed into the intersection and the intersection watched this found it with a uh with an emergency vehicle that was coming into it as a consequence she was hit by the emergency vehicle in the intersection and then she was hit by a pickup truck and another vehicle check this she was pushed by the wind hit by an emergency and now stuck in a storm now i'm going to unpack that in these few moments she was pushed by winds of circumstances beyond her control she was hit by an emergency vehicle and now there are other vehicles that have hit her and she's in the midst of the outer bands of a storm she stuck in the storm as a matter of fact she testified that when she came to i love this that she said that she didn't even know what time of day it was not to mention the fact that here it is the maserati the doors to the maserati were jammed shut and she could not get out herself and so if you let me back up and give you the metaphor one more time she was pushed by winds of circumstances that she could not control she was hit by an emergency and then stuck in a storm and that is what someone feels perhaps you have been pushed by winds of circumstances beyond your control into an insufferable situation and to make matters worse you are stuck in a storm and you feel handcuffed by helplessness surely if you are on this planet that's exactly what happened when we were pushed by the winds of covet 19 into an emergency of the coronavirus crisis and that has eventuated in so much covet 19 exposing covet 1619 and so many things have come out during this time that have reflected the sickness and selfishness of the world in which we live and so here it is pushed by circumstances beyond your control hit by an emergency and then here it is stuck in a storm handcuffed by helplessness and feeling there is no way out of what you have gotten yourself into i believe that speaks profoundly to the predicament and plight of a young girl whose name had been hadassah hadassah my sisters and brothers finds herself in a situation where she is pushed by winds of circumstances beyond her control she is hit by an emergency and now stuck in a storm where she has to make some decisions i'll see if i can unpack it for you bible readers already know that hadassah is the name of the sister whose name was changed to esther esther my sisters and brothers found herself orphaned at a young age both of her parents are deceased she grows up here it is in an unstable environment of insecurity trauma and tragedy because her parents are no longer living her older cousin mordecai the bible lets us know that mordecai was a part of the defeated deported exiles who had found themselves at the hands of nebuchadnezzar and babylon deported from home in judah to babylon and mordecai is in babylon colonized and oppressed as a second-class citizen and now he is raising his younger cousin hadassah hadassah my sisters and brothers her name changes to esther when persia defeats here it is babylon and so there are things going on on the international stage that directly impact what's going on in young hadassah's life i hope you see the winds of adversity that have pushed her into an emergency and where she ends up stuck in a storm i'll see if i can make it plain because the book lets us know that the king of persia ruled all the way from what ethiopia to india that's what verse 1 of chapter one says please don't miss that because those are countries of color not european countries they are countries of color and so from ethiopia to india the king his empire spreads his king the king runs the world from ethiopia to india and the book lets us know that the king now finds himself in a situation why because the book lets us know that vashtai his wife had made up her mind that she was going to refuse to be objectified she was not going to be treated as a thing to be used but a person to be respected y'all know verse one y'all know chapter one because in chapter one the bible lets us know that vashti was sent for by the king who was throwing a party of toxic masculinity and when vashti is sent for to come out wearing only her crown showing off her statue west shapely biological beauty the book lets us know that vast tie in essence says i'm not going to be objectified and thingified if i've got to pay the price i'll pay the price and the book lets us know that vashtai is deposed vashtai is sent away and the moment that happens men who find themselves in power tell the king you know we can't let her get away with this we've got to pass a policy with surgical precision that will keep women in their place watch it they pass a policy that says that women are to submit to their husbands and do exactly what their husbands say have you can you imagine that a policy is passed that in essence gets into the bedroom of a home and determines what a woman can and cannot do what kind of government would pass a policy like that where they would determine that they are going to control the bodies of women men passing policies that control the bodies of women i can't imagine what kind of sick antiquated body of legislators would decide that they're going to use the power of policy in order to govern women's bodies well that's what happens there but the text lets us know i'm not even done the text lets us know there's a hater by the name of haman and haman is upset because mordecai remember the older her cousin of hadassah who has become esther the bible lets us know that haman and please don't miss this was upset because mordecai did not bow down to him haman is a baller in the king's cabinet and because he's a baller in the king's cabinet he believes that the jews the marginalized other should bow down to him and mordecai doesn't bow down mordecai says i'm not going to laugh when ain't nothing funny i'm not going to run it just because you tell me to i've got too much self-respect to act to deny my own humanity just because you deny my humanity i like that right there because when you know who you are other folks issues with you won't become an issue for you but the bible lets us know that haman is so upset that he sets in motion here it is a plot of policies that will with surgical precision eventuate in the genocide the extermination of the jewish community i think i'll stop right there because i'm tripping that now in the book of esther again we see public policy being used with surgical precision to go after certain communities well i think i'll stop right there because y'all think i'm just talking about back then as opposed to right now somebody said that recently in the suppression section here in texas that 666 bills were passed into law now i did not count them but somebody said 660 bills were passed into law i think that's an appropriate number for the evil of the texas policy makers because the texas policy makers passed law passed bills into law that are sexist and racist and ableist they pass bills into law that are determined to uphold white supremacy as they illustrate it here it is the meaning of a critical race theory which says here it is that laws are not race neutral and so they illustrated in the passage of their 666 laws exactly what they outlawed when they came down against critical race theory preached freddie haynes i'm on my way and so understand laws have been passed with surgical precision and as a consequence imagine esther because esther has her own issues i told you she was orphaned i told you she's in a colonized community where she is a second-class citizen but wait the book lets us know that when vashtai makes or takes her stand and refuses to be dehumanized in the face of toxic masculinity the bible says that esther is among a lot of women according to the brilliant biblical scholar erica dunbar erica dunbar says that the book of esther at the outset is a book about sex trafficking why because there are euphemisms that are used throughout the book such as go into the king such as at the pleasure of the king and those are euphemisms for sex and weight i told y'all that esther is a young teenage girl at best weight i'm not even done but this goes on from india to ethiopia and so erica dunbar talks about the sex trafficking that is experienced by victims of sex traffickers and these victims are young girls of color sex trafficking going on sounds like some r kelly mess going down right here r kelly yeah in a position of power just like the king of persia in essence is controlling as he baits young girls with big dreams and baits them into a controlling environment that eventuates in sex trafficking i know i'm losing some of y'all right now because y'all don't want to give up on dancing to and jamming to i believe i can fly and step in the name of love and so you're having a hard time with this but your sex trafficking is sex trafficking and that's exactly what r kelly has been guilty of i'm not even done sex trafficking is going on right under our noses in this country and the sad reality is it's really happening right here in texas but does it not blow your mind that the same session that was called to suppress our vote the same session that was called to erase critical race theory in schools where it's not being taught anyway the same special session did not deal with issues of poverty it did not deal with the failing greed it did not deal with sex trafficking going on right under our noses in the state of texas i'm trying to let somebody know that public policy in the hands of power brokers who watch this are using it for their own corrupt agenda will create a state of emergency and that's where we are right now we've been pushed by the wind into an emergency and we are stuck in a storm but oh hallelujah look what this book lets us know the book lets us know that mordecai gets a message to his little cousin and says cuz i know you've been through a whole lot because there is something being hatched right now and somebody needs to do something and you've got access and should use that access to make a difference on behalf of our people don't you think that just because you have access that you won't get wiped out when the thing goes down when a haman's plot goes down just because you have access doesn't mean that you won't get wiped out just because you have position and privilege it doesn't mean that when the state of emergency is in full force that you will not suffer i gotta stop right there because somebody needs to hear that word i know you've got access i know you've got privileged position and power but don't you forget who you are because in a state of emergency listen they'll come for you after they've come for others and so the text lets us know she receives this message and in this message mordecai in essence says it's time for you to recognize in this state of emergency you've got to be on time on time one time i love that because on time is is a phrase that is used in athletics to speak of athletes who come through in the clutch whenever you come through in the clutch it is often said about that particular athlete that that was an on-time play a big time play and on time play drew pearson just got inducted into the hall of fame and that's a beautiful thing but one of the things that drew pearson was known for was being a clutch receiver that meant that when the game was on the line and the cowboys were about to lose stallback knew there was one receiver he had to get the ball to who would come through and that was a number 88 himself drew pierce and drew pearson was clutch he was on time and played big time in states of emergency i got to stop right there because that's my word to everybody listening and that is god wants you to be on time during this state of emergency we are in a state of emergency and god needs some big time players who will be on time in this state of emergency what does it look like i'm almost done the text lets us know it looks like this when you're on time in a state of emergency it's because of your awareness of our payroll i'mma do that again your awareness of our payroll we find ourselves in perilous times i think my sisters and brothers there's a phrase that tells us what we ought to do and the phrase now is under attack by folk watch this who are trying to misrepresent what it really means and that is the whole concept of staying woke and wokeness is now under attack by the likes of bill maher by the likes of republicans who find themselves now trying to redefine the original meaning of the word the original meaning of the word goes back to anna mudro and mudra m-u-l-d-r-o-w is the originator of stay woke and she illustrated by saying it it's like being kidnapped having a burst sap sack over your head and you are taken to a place and when you arrive there you no longer are at home and soon you start to discover the person that took you is not your friend but they do everything to undermine your humanity and now you are awakened to the crisis you find yourself in that's what it means to stay woke you're still not getting this when you are woke it means you are aware of the peril of your predicament you are conscious of what's going on in the world around you and so bill maher you ought to go ahead stay out of our business if you don't know what you're talking about because to stay woke means to stay conscious that's why dr king in his last sunday sermon preached at washington national cathedral a sermon called remaining awake to a great revolution in which he told that crowd y'all need to be woke because of what is going on during this civil rights movement that is taking place you gotta stay woke and that's what this text lets us know that we had better stay woke stay woke y'all to the fact that just this year laws have been passed in congress please don't miss this that basically are anti-asian hate laws i like that anti-asian hate laws they are laws that in essence penalize people for hatred against asians and that ought to be but a stat just came out in the washington post and the stats said that more black people have been subjected to hate than asians by a rate of three to one and yet there is no anti-lynching law that has been passed yet we have not had past that filibuster we have not busted up the filibuster that has roots in enslavement as well as during jim and jane crow segregation so i want to know what's up mr president you said you would have our back but what you're doing is riding our back we need you to have our back the way we want you to have our back because all over this country our voting rights are under attack and if you are going to have our back you've got to bust up the filibuster and pass the john lewis voting rights bill pass the for the people act that's what it means to have our back y'all you got to be aware of the peril we find ourselves in we are in some perilous times and we've got to be aware of the peril not just aware of the peril but the book lets us know in the midst of the peril we ascertain our purpose i'm trying not to shout because look what the book says he says be aware of the peril if you don't speak up silence is violence and and just because you're in the palace it doesn't mean that you won't get killed you won't find yourself messed up and messed over and then he says and who knows whether or not you've been called to the kingdom for such a time as this i love that be aware of the peril but then be be and then ascertain your purpose in the midst of the peril i love that because it simply lets us know that everything that has happened to you god can take it to open up the door to the purpose assigns you i didn't say that right i say it like this god can take the stones here it is that have been hurled your way as stepping stones to set you up for the purpose god has assigned you i still am not saying that right god can use the winds of adversity to push you into what god has assigned your life to do that god may not cause the storm but god can use that storm to push you into purpose god can use what you've been through to show you what god wants to do through you that is freddy haynes god can take everything that you've been through so don't you let anybody look down on you because of your past because of your pain because of what you've been through because god uses all of that god did not cause it but god can use it to add strength to your character wisdom to your mind and give you what you need to open up your eyes to what god is going to do through you in your life okay lebron james 27 years old testifies that young kid in florida trayvon martin who's 17 gets killed by zimmerman in essence his life as it relates to the justice system did not count lebron james at that moment said that trayvon martin was 10 years younger than me trayvon martin was a few years older than my own son and it hit me that i cannot spend the rest of my life just using my platform to accumulate wealth for myself i've got to use my platform to stand up for righteousness and justice so when you see lebron james doing what he's doing in the shop doing what he's doing with this school doing what he's doing standing up for justice and making the nba stand up for justice lebron james did that because here it is in the midst of an emergency where trayvon martin got killed it opened up his eyes not to his job but to his calling there it is freddie haynes because i've discovered that god will let you have a job because god knows you've got to pay the bills but god says don't you spend your whole life just with your job you better make sure you surrender to your calling and if you want to know what your calling is look at what you've been through that sensitizes you to what's going on in the world around you you see a job may pay your bills but a calling will give you what money can't buy a job will let you have a bed but a calling will give you a reason to wake up in the morning a job will allow you to drive a car but a calling is what drives you i'm trying to say to somebody that god has a calling on your life and will use what you've been through to show you what god wants to do through you and with you for the world around you ah oh i wish y'all were here because i'm trying not to shout but i'm a shout out by myself because i'm glad to know that people ask me often why you do what you do i do what i do because of what i've been through because of what god has shown me i do what i do because i know that god has a plan and a purpose for my life and because god has a plan and purpose i've got to live under that call under that purpose and i love this because here's the shout the shout is when god has a purpose and a plan for your life god is that here it is unseen hand taking what you have been through to set the stage for what god will do through you god is the unseen and i wish that was original with me we had the privilege of hanging out with dr harry s wright who served as president of bishop college while i was a student dean of the chapel dr harry s right now in bennettsville south carolina dr wright gave me a tour of bennettsville south carolina and when he gave me that tour he was sharing his own personal testimony of what god had done in his life and dr wright parked for a moment and said you know doc doctor it seems as if all of my life there's been an unseen hand an unseen hand that's been directing and protecting shutting the wrong doors opening up the right doors an unseen hand that has been right there all along comforting me when i was heartbroken an unseen hand that was building me up when others were trying to tear me down an unseen hand where do i get that from if you read the book of esther you discover nowhere in the book is the word god reference god lord none of it is used in the book and yet all of us know that god's unseen hand was providentially setting things up and so what god does god will make you aware of the peril and then you ascertain your purpose and what you ascertain your purpose here's the shout you know there are alternative possibilities look what my man mordecai says mordecai says listen s it's like this if you don't do anything then deliverance and help will come from another source because god ain't out of options god ain't done god ain't through god is never out of options i was blessed with a wonderful mother-in-law called her my mother in love the late elizabeth peak and we used to play checkers and chinese checkers and she loved to cheat when we would play because she had arthritis and so she would when she was losing move a whole row and then say oops and once she said oops we have to then put the checkers or the chinese checkers back we're playing checkers one time i used to beat her most of the time but one time i said i'm not going to play my best game and y'all gonna tell you what happened mama elias was finding herself in a jacked up situation where i had surrounded her and mama leah says but you let me get a king i'ma break out of this jam and check out what happened she got to the kingdom row and once she got to the kingdom row she had a king and then she said in the middle of the game watch mama list we're gonna play where the king can long jump and so i said what do you mean how you gonna change the rules right now and y'all she started jumping long jump in me and before i know it i lost the game and mama leah is just just laughing here's what she says and saying i won't forget as she laughed mama leah said once i got my king i had a whole lot of options y'all it dawned on me when you know the king i don't care what jams you get in you always have options our king comes through in the clutch our king always has options is there anybody out there who can just get on your social media and say god ain't never out of options i know god will come through in the clutch because my savior came through in the clutch when there was a huge need of people who were food insecure my savior took a two-piece and five biscuits and came through in the clutch and fed to multitude my bible says he came through in the clutch when lazarus was dead and said lazarus come here and the old folks say he had to say lazarus by name because if he just said into a situation that's good and here i am flying today not because i'm so good but because my god is able to have those in the emergency as the source of your deliverance and relief i'm done but is there anybody out there who can say that's my testimony emergencies that could have taken me out god used to set me up so joseph told his brothers you meant it for evil but god meant it for good and jesus told those nailing him to a cross don't you lift me up because if you mess around and lift me up it's about to go down and they raised up that cross and i hear my savior saying and i if i be
