we're gonna shirt today so in today's video we're gonna be talking all about OBS scene transitions on your screen you probably have multiple scenes set up so you might have a scene that has your game and then when you want to take a break you might go into another scene that just has your webcam and you're probably trying to improve the production quality of your stream so you might set up some of OBS is built-in scene transitions so they have like a slide transition that I would like to swipe in transition I think they have one that's called like luma wipe but there's one option in there which is called a stinger transition so stinger transitions are actually really cool and you might have already seen them a lot of the bigger streamers are starting to use in them the way it works is you have a special pre-made video file and that video file has a transparent layer built inside of it so when you switch scenes and OBS the video file starts playing and then at some point the video will fill up the whole screen and then OBS will switch scenes and then the rest of the video will play the video file is sort of covers the cut between scenes so the key to making this work is you need that stinger transition video file and for that you have two options so option one is you can go on a website like Fiverr and pay starting from around 50 dollars for someone really talented to go make one for you or if you're feeling adventurous you could try and make one yourself using some motion graphic software like Adobe After Effects now if you're new to streaming or you're just like me you're poor you probably don't want to spend a lot of money right away to go pay someone to go make a scene transition for you so you're probably looking at option number two here's the problem now every single one of these stinger transition tutorial videos that are on YouTube telling you use some paid software now Adobe After Effects is really good but that cost like 30 dollars a month and at that point you might as well pay someone else who's way more talented than you to go make the transition for you so I did a lot of research and I figured out one way to do it using only free software so we're gonna be using hitfilm express so hitfilm express if you've never used them before hitfilm express is free video editing software but it can actually be used for motion graphics as well and you don't have to use hitfilm express you can use whatever you want if you have After Effects you can use After Effects or you can even use blender I think which is also free but blenders super hard never used it I wouldn't recommend it as long as whatever software you're using allows you to export a transparent video file you're good to go and that leads on to want to be major problems with using hitfilm express and that is while you can render a transparent video file you can only render an uncompressed avi file so that means is you get rendered to second video clip and that could blow out to be multiple gigabytes but don't worry I've worked out a solution for you that I haven't seen anywhere else online so you're not gonna find the solution anywhere else so we're gonna make a really really basic stinger transition today this isn't supposed to be a full-fledged hitfilm express suit tutorial it's just to demonstrate that you can make some stinger transitions using free software once you know the absolute basics then you'll know enough information to go out on YouTube and search for all the hitfilm tutorials you want so here's the transition we're gonna make its just really really nice and simple you have a white rectangle that just swipes in from the left and then moves off-screen to the right we're gonna get started if you don't have hitfilm i left a link in the description box down below so just download installer it's pretty straightforward so we have hitfilm express open when you first install hitfilm it looks like this what we're gonna do is we're gonna click on it you and we're gonna change the template so we want to create a 1080p video file and we want it to run at 60fps so it looks really smooth so we're gonna change the template from 1080p to 1080p 60fps and we're gonna set in duration we can change this later but we only want to make one that's about 10 seconds is ridiculously long we only realistically only want it to be like 2 seconds but we can change the length later so we'll just make it 10 for now and then just hit OK so we're on our timeline but before we even do anything at all let's talk about what we're gonna be doing we're gonna be creating a white rectangle and then we're gonna be telling our video editor how we want that white rectangle to move along the screen and we're gonna be doing that using keyframes so if you don't know what a keyframe is basically in an anime we use keyframes to define starting points and ending points for an animation and we do this so that we don't have to draw every single individual frame so in our example we won't have to draw this white rectangle 60 times every single second we can just define where we want a rectangle be at zero seconds and then two seconds later we want our rectangle to be here and then our video editor will just draw every single frame in between that's called interpolation so let's get an example going so we're gonna create the white rectangle first so we're gonna go to new and then plane and we're gonna change the color to let ya just keep it white and then press okay let's drag that white rectangle on to the page and that's a shortened this we're gonna zoom in by holding ctrl and scrolling and let's just change the length to two seconds so I'm going to start creating our keyframes so we're gonna right-click and go make a composite shot and just press ok and then we're gonna expand this first layer here and go to transform and we're just gonna move the rectangle from the right and then move it all the way to the left and we're just gonna set the initial position at zero seconds for the white rectangle so we're gonna go into position and we're just gonna go negative 1920 now we know it's negative 1920 because we know the resolution of our video is 1920 by 1080 and then we're gonna click on this circle which enables keyframes for the position so you'll notice that once we've clicked that hit film is added a little diamond here and that just denotes the first keyframe and then we're gonna drag our playhead all the way to the end here at two seconds now we're gonna change the position to all the way to the right side so that's gonna be positive 1920 and we just drag our playhead along the timeline you can see our rectangle just moves across the screen and if we go to back start and press spacebar to play it we've got a really simple stinger transmission going but we're gonna step it up just a little bit so we're gonna go into our value graph and as you can see this graph just has a straight linear line and that line just represents how that rectangle moves in between those two key frames so we don't want that white rectangle moving just really boring along the screen we're gonna make it look a little bit more interesting so we're gonna click the first keyframe interval and then press this diamond here as you can see it's made that redline a little bit more of a curve so let's just hold shift and drag this app a little bit more and we're gonna do the same thing for the second keyframe this time we're gonna use this time in here and then we're gonna drag this out about here so what we have now is we have like a smooth curve going so it's gonna start out slow it's gonna speed up and then once it hits the middle it's gonna slow down again so for drying our playhead back and hit okay [Music] you can see our steering transition looks a lot more interesting and those are really the basics but like I said you can make this as fancy as you want you can go crazy with it but we're just gonna leave it nice and simple for now all right so now we want to render this thing so we're gonna go back into our editor and select the composite shot and go to file and export contents so remember what I said before we need to render this in a format that has a transparent layer and the only option and hitfilm express if you click on preset is to select a VI plus alpha that alpha channel is gonna be our transparent layer and then we pretty much just press start exporting that only took us like five seconds it may take longer for you if you have something that's really complicated but now this is where you're gonna start seeing issues so go into your export file and this is our final render but look at this file this is a two second video and it's nearly one gigabyte so this brings us to the next part of the video we're gonna have to re-encode this file just to get that file into a reasonable sighs while also keeping the transparent layer that last part is tricky because most video encoders like handbrake aren't designed with transparency in mind so we're gonna be using to re-encode the file is a command-line utility called ffmpeg so I already made a video for how to install ffmpeg so if you haven't watched that I released that video last week so go and watch that video right now so what we're gonna do with ffmpeg is create a batch script with Windows and then we're gonna use that script to re-encode our video so making the batch script is really easy we're just gonna open up a new notepad file and in the description I've left the script that you want to paste into this notepad file and then we want to save this as a batch script file so click on save and just make sure when you're saving in you don't want it to end in txt we want to make sure the file extension is dot b84 a batch file so we're just call it in code dot bat so we have our batch script we're just gonna take our uncompressed AVI and drag it over the encode batch file and it should open up the command prompt and just start encoding it if you get an error at this point you don't have ffmpeg installed so make sure you go back and watch my previous video to see how that's done alright so this is only a two second video so it shouldn't take that long to encode but once it's done you've notice a new process folder here and just go into that and we should see a WebM file and the file size has gone from one gigabyte all the way down to 21 and a half kilobytes so if you play our video file now it should just be one really smooth standard transition all right so we're nearly done here comes the fun part we're gonna open up OBS now and here's our scene layout we just got a game and when we switch over to face cam it's just a boring you cut so we're gonna go over to scene transitions and we're gonna click the plus sign and we're gonna add a new stinger so we're gonna input our video files so just go browse for a video file and then now we have to tell OBS at what point along this video file do you want to transition to the next scene and since it's two seconds long and it's symmetrical at exactly one second that's what you want to transit so here at the transition point we're gonna set the time so one thousand that's one second and we're gonna change fade style to crossfade let's just make sure you don't get that weird thing where your audio kind of fades out while the transition plays press okay and then now when we switch our face camp we garner stinger transition playing so I hope you guys have enjoyed that video now I realize that wasn't the most crazy and advanced thing of transition ever but that really wasn't the goal this video the goal was more for you to gain enough knowledge so that you can go out and start experimenting yourself and creating something unique for your own stream and also just kind of bothered me that there's so many videos out there that are telling all these new streamers that they should go out and pay someone to make these transitions for them or go out and pay for expensive software when there are free alternatives out there that are available to literally everyone but anyway go out and start practicing hitfilm and go out and create something awesome if you have something that you want to show us I have a discord so you can show your work there or you can just ask any questions related to screaming you also leave a comment let me know any other video ideas or topics that you'd like to see me cover in the future but for now thank you guys for watching and I already said that so this is super awkward anyway I'll talk to you guys in next one
