hello and welcome you amazing person my name is Rob I am the manic gaming guy and today we are on an aim to make the perfect Road on a Hilltop sort of thing if youve been following along with the series we have first shown you how to make your own custom map then how to import some of your own assets to your custom map and now we're going to show you how to make the very Basics which is a road you need to have a road if it's going to be a driving game and you're making a map or you need to know how to make the perfect Road and unfortunately there's no such thing as a perfect road because they all have bumps they'll have cracks they'll have tears they all wear and tear but I'm going to be showing you what I've learned over the years to try to make the best road you possibly can in beam and G sometimes it can be tricky but hold tight and I'll show you the tricks I know so here is a little bit of custom road that I've made for my tutorial we are on a 4K map which is ginormous so to make something feel very detailed and enclosed and you know comfortable make it feel like basically you're on a real Road can be some trickiness but we'll go get there I to build a beautiful Road okay obviously I've got a bit of a theme to mine I like UK and that's what I'm doing you might have your own theme but that's okay you can still do what you like just keep in consideration of what you want the map to look like in the end I'm just going to go for sort of a nuro ring sort of feel to this one but on the UK roads so you've just seen how long it is that literally doesn't last that long keep that in mind that's the only reason why I do such big Maps cuz I feel the shorter ones you just run out of speed by the time you get to the end of a road somewhere so we're going to be continuing on from this little bit here you're going to be wanting to go into your world editor of course which is f11 um I'm going to need to tid up this little bit here quickly just so we're looking good to start everything think should be grass for you um I don't know if you're trying to plan to build Hills but I'm going to build a big straight with a bit of a bend and then hopefully me doing so will teach you guys how to do some things right I'm going to raise the height most of them got names you can you can understand what they do some of them act a little bit different you're going to have to get your own style and taste of how that works here's size that's the size of the circle that we're working with because I'm building some big ass mountains I'm going to be going quite big my pressure is quite High I rarely ever touch these the height is just what this is set to so I can change the height of that if I needed to it would be actually be quite nice actually to select that height set height that's an average that's an average and that's just flat we'll get through it it's all right I think um the best way to learn is for experience rather than I could tell you exactly what all these do but what's the point you're going to forget it in seconds so I'm go first of all just draw like I want a bit of a Bend I want some straight and then another Bend I'm too far away too far away I want a huge straight keep an eye on the map yeah and then I'm going to Kink off and then I'm going to go up this isn't the size of my road this is just the mountain I'm performing I'm trying to show you what it's like to make roads that's not on exactly a flat service cuz that can be the hardest thing to do so I'm just go click on raise height now now first of all I'm going to draw my road out I'm going click on this decal here check my size mine needs to be eight cuz that's a width of the road I'm doing if you're doing double roads you might want 16 or 20 but your find two cars will fit conly in here I can go smaller probably six is the smallest I'd go for two lanes three for OB a single lane and then if it goes motorways you normally have a bit more extra space so I tend to think if it's a tight Road it's it's free free nodes widthwise and then if it's a double Road you would double it up so You' go six is the lowest and work your way up see how you feel any I'm going to uh click on my big road contrl C will copy all these settings and I'm going to draw myself a road out get so I can actually see the graphics so this is a bit of a straight now I used to do really tight turns and they're not fun I used to do really tight complicated turns but unfortunately it's not realistic well it is sort of but not in a game in a game you got quite big turns that make it a bit more fast so we say so let's do a big fat ass Bend you notice well this is straight but soon as I put the next one in it starts to bend so keep that in mind when you're making these that will do nice big fatest bend and then yeah all the way down here nice and straight now at the moment our terrain is very flat but we're going to change that cuz we don't want it to be perfectly flat normally on like a hill pass you'd be start low and work your way up but we're just having a bit of fun here so we're not going to necessarily stick to the four rules um okay so we could click on terrain tool raise terrain height let's let's um start filling in this mountain and then see how we feel now obviously I'm doing a very big circle at the moment so hence why we're getting a lot of graphic slowness so I might actually skip this part or maybe put it in Fast Forward mode so you can see me build the mountain quickly from behind and then we're going to decide on our height of our roads yeah yeah this is tripping out a little bit let me catch you in the future right okay I think I've made my life a little bit harder than I need to really for this tutorial but hopefully maybe you learn more so I've raised the mountain side up like we wanted I've gone higher I've gone a bit lower we've got some bends and uh yeah the sort of thing you expect nature to do but if you look we've got some very weird roads going on which you definitely would not be able to drive on so what's my tricks and tips to fix this out well a lot really it's a little bit of finicky but after doing these few processes you can have some beautiful roads yourself now think in real life if you were a builder would you just come and slap some Road on this terrain no you first of all probably flattening out we got a couple flattened tools we got this average tool which will take I guess the up and down average of what's going on probably make the brush a bit smaller now you see the roads eight you may want to think oh well I'll make everything around this road small don't start big about this big and then work your detail into the road don't work the detail out the road work the detail into the road it's a lot easier trust me I've made a lot of mistakes trying to be too delicate at first you wanted to slap it on and then tidy it up so this is the average tool we are 100% pressure yeah uh can we see it doing some doing its job please that is a slope what's it going to do here you can see it's it's it's trying to average it out to a flat surface keep going over the top not too bad you can call that good enough took a few tries and it took the average it did okay or you can use the flatten tool the flatten tool will take a few passes and you may want to say right my corner is where I want my my average to start I guess how you could call it to start here pressure this 100% and work your way out from the corner you can do that and you see why I'm saying this if you look now it's chopped through the terrain here and it's actually raised it up cuz it's called flatten it's trying to uh flatten everything out not CA an average just flatten it out so that's why I tend to like to choose from the corner and then your Corners are more likely to be flat and then it will lever itself out as it works its way along now you have to do this a few times don't expect to be perfect straight away like I say you might want to change your brush tool a few times go back and forth and this is not the final step so say stay tuned cuz I'm going to show you some more I'm still flatting away from the corner back and forth get a bit of an average does have look pretty cuz we're got to tidy this all up at the end this isn't our final result it's just to get a better average through the terrain that we've made like I said my only real advice on this bit is just try not to end on a Bend try end on a straight but in real life that's where you'd normally find a hill it's on the straight rather and it actual bends itself so just flatten out to where you feel the straight will be okay so we got roughly some sort of Flat Road now you can almost visualize it working don't worry about it clipping when you save and reload the level that will stop it's cuz you're changing the terrain height and stuff the game doesn't like it but as you see we've got these Roth edges so we're just going to quickly smooth a nose out so from back from the start grab your little smoothie wo tool make it big as it needs to be I guess and just smooth it all out if you've obviously got some amazing detail in your terrain already you go find it's a bit harder but still keep watching cuz there will be some techniques to help you get in the more detailed spots later on but uh basically um this is why I say work into the roads don't work out to the roads obviously some of you may actually be using the uh Google Earth tool which can actually render like blocks of Earth into blender and then you can use free assets and do that and then do your map making that way but uh this way is the creative way this way is as if you are a clay Potter making your own Bowl unique and special to you couldn't possibly tell you how far we are into the tutorial now but hopefully you're still engaged and happy with the outcome if you like to hit that like button and subscribe that' be much obliged apart from that let's jump on to the next stage so now you got quite a good average of what's going on now the reason why we flatten it out is because this next stage we'll be cutting some Corners we'll be flatten out even more and giv us the ability to make the road even smoother and more contr controlled where we wanted to go I'll show you what I mean hey it's my face again I'll say one to the second part of the detailing there might be like three or four stages so hopefully you're staying focused and still engaged and I'll love to see what sort of map you make in the future hit that like button subscribe let's crack on okay so this is quite um quite a good stage I guess quite an important part there's actually um two ways to do this we're do this the mesh Road editor way but if you go into normal mode I mean like if you go push f11 and go into normal mode you actually have track editor which helps you put canvas into the corners and things like that but we're going for more of a organic and natural feel so we're just going to use the mesh Road and the terrain we've made so what I want you to do is hold well got click the mesh Road first don't worry about the fact there no textures or anything like that we're not actually going to be using the mesh Road itself per se we're going use it to just to shape the road let me show you what I mean so this is where my road originally ends where it's quite relatively smooth so this is where I want to start I've got this set to 20 my road only eight wide but the reason I'm doing that is for like I say work into the road not out from the road it's a lot easier to take terrain away than it is to put it in um I've FL out the way many times so now I just start big and then get smaller as I feel it needs to be with detail and other terrain editing anyway so hold alt and then start clicking away if you do really small details like clicks like this one two three four each one of these nodes is a potential bump in your road and also it's it can go up down up down up down depending on how smooth your train is so I recommend if you're trying to make a nice smooth Road for driving on and the way people would try and make a road ideally is try and make it flat and smooth as possible so ideally like maybe about this far but you're not probably not going to get around the bend eventually so come just a bit short of your Bend and get a nice straight line and the reason why that is now that bit of road when it eventually gets put down is be a flat bit of road that goes up obviously you're not intending to do that maybe you want a bump you can just hold alt put one in the middle and say actually I wanted a bit of a slope to this I can just bring that down theyve stayed as they are I've now actually got a slope to my road but um hopefully you're just like me you're just sticking to the terrain and what it tells you to do and you just want to smooth Road and see what comes up at the end and then edit it afterwards so we got try and follow this much as possible and with less nodes as possible and that will make us have a lot smoother Road in the outcome let me just get this finished and I'll show you the finished one little tip for you don't do a road as big as I have do a couple corners detail it and then move on to the next bit you know or maybe map out the road and then do a bit at a time because this can get overwhelming if you choose a road too big especially if you're trying to do a tutorial and teach people how to do it I'm going assume you're all beginners and uh let you know if you hold alt no wait what okay it helps if I click on the actual screen if you hold alt and use your little mouse wheel you can change the camera speed so say it's taking you forever to move around the map you can just hold alt put it up a few more to your desired speed so you're flying around the map put it up high if you're doing some small detail bits hold out and put it low there you go little top tip for you we are getting ow sorry if you heard that that's me whacking my mic stand we're getting there I promise we'll get some beautiful Road soon I'm quite a bad shooter really I'm assuming you've all got some basic understanding how to make maps if any of these windows are missing by the way just click on window coincidentally up here the four main Ones Will up here and then you have a few extra fun ones for later on but anyway let's get back to this road uh as you can see we clicked on mesh tool right we click on this comes with all nodes you can actually click on the pencil and it collects it as a solid item rather all the nodes and you can actually use controll D to duplicate it see I got two of them now doing exactly the same thing or I can use contrl Z control C to copy and control V where's it gone uhoh what have I just done I I didn't have it selected okay I before I broke the game contrl + C contrl + V we also do the same thing thing just keep that in mind so now I want to collect select my road and you can see it is a little bit over and I want to make this top base flat with this bottom base some of you may accidentally have some of these selected or done on purpose this will lock you to a grid so if you're trying to snap it to the road you might to shoot right past so you don't want that necessarily locked up this will lock you to the terrain like Snap to terrain like when trees need to just touch the grass yet you don't don't really want that selected cuz you're not going to be able to get it to where we want it just make sure none of these are selected off and you can have a free reain of this now this could be judgment call for you cuz depending on where you put your nodes well depend how much road is showing still see what I mean some road is showing some not so basically this is higher the mesh is higher now it's not so I think that's probably about right for me I tend to just want to link it up perfectly from here now next stage the 3D objects cuz I was about to say the mesh Road had some special tools but it's not it's any 3D object has special tools let me show you what I mean so if we clicked on this one here align with mesh down and make my circle a lot smaller this will bring it down all right make it bigger so it fits the whole 20 maybe a wider cuz I want to do the whole thing not just where my road is I said work into the road not out there you go that's brought all the terrain down to where this Yellow Block mesh thing is but it's not doesn't just do it to this this is why you do your road first before anything else because it also does it to trees yeah which is um a nuisance especially if you just put loads of bushes and trees right next to your road and you feel like smoothing it out with the mesh tool so yeah keep that in mind just control Zed to get rid of that so my first protocol now is I'm going to use the I can make it big as possible cuz I got no trees but bigger it is the longer it takes to think you'll see I just clicked it and it's tripping out come on bring it all down yeah it takes a while to think what you're not working why are you not working am I too far away this oh bringing it up right okay we all make mistakes okay people we all make some mistakes all right yeah see now it takes time to think but all this will go back down to the terrain so we're going to do this first down there it thing and before we move on we might as well don't clip the trees and then click up as well cuz you can't really see this one but there will be terrain underneath the yellow mesh you can sort of tell by reading the decal that sat on top of the match so let me finish this off and we'll be back that's that stage done for me I definitely shouldn't chose a road this big for a tutorial because it's taking me quite a while because I like some detail right I recommend you don't delete the mesh um just grab it and move it down just a little bit below the map and delete it later on do delete it later on because it'll pay Havoc otherwise now don't worry about these little edges here because you can and just later on grab the right size tool the right size tool and it's moving out and no one will know the difference the point is your road will hopefully be a lot smoother now to drive down because you used a mesh technique okay obviously there's a little bump here when you do your joins just get the Smoothie tool make it quite big smooth it out go back and forth a little bit and then test it out with the car and hopefully drops a good in I recommend this stage before smoothing it out anymore cuz you can't really see what's going on cuz the grass is in the way you want to go to your terrain not terrain hide picker terrain tool terrain picker and pick your assault now my assphalt it's green it's not gray okay some reason it's coming up like a light color there but basically like when you look down this was gray the road look very uneven but because I've made it a light green it just looks like the edge of the road should be so there's a top tip there I'm sure on some of the maps they call it just ground cover it's tarmac it acts acts like tarmac but it actually is uh decorated like grass so um yeah have fun uh turning your road into asphalt you can either go really small same detail to your road or just go for now a little bit wider than your road and then later on you can come in with the grass and fill in the gaps so let me do that I'll be back in a sec and this has to be one of the most painful things to do in this map making business now I've played CD skylines and there's a perfectly good idea they use called a prop tool I don't see why you can't lay this down and then use this to paint the ter so I can paint the terrain with the right material rather than having to use a weird Circle paint brush to just fill in a circle and also like you can you can change this to square but I do not know how to rotate the square it's just it's always squared at that angle you can turn you can turn your camera that they don't do anything but it'll be useful you actually rotate the square that they give you but I don't how to do that back to making at fault if your terrain is doing this like where you can just see through it even though you're above it it's probably cuz you've edited your terrain and you just need to reload it just close the map and reload the map or put up with it for now oh my days why did I make this road so long it's a tutorial I know I want it long eventually but I didn't need to do that now I've been making quite oh my dead hit the mic again I've been making quite a lot of these tutorial videos I'm making maps and cars and stuff so feel free to go look at my playlist and you'll find a lot of helpful videos for yourself wow I really hope this helps someone there's a lot of detail going into this it should be a beautiful map to play on afterwards as well okay so if all things have gone well all you really need do now is smoothing it out now 20 was the size of your mesh so don't go bigger than that the reason why I say as you see this like curve here if there's a road right next to it and you wanted to smooth it out and you got too close to this mountain to the right and you were to smooth it out it would actually raise it up which therefore would not be smoothing out your road so that's why I make the mesh 20 big so that when I make the circle smaller but a little bit bigger than the road still cuz you want to moveth In and Out it doesn't actually get interfered by the surrounding terrain you can then after smoing all your road out and you're happy you can then just go around and then tidy up the edges now keep in mind I've only done this myself once as in use the mesh sometimes you might want to do it multiple times depending on how tricky the road is I have just looked down here and I no there quite a peak on here now the options I got are over yeah sorry about the terrain I need to load the level in fact I'm just go reload my level so the terrain's not so disgusting okay I've loaded My Level back up so what I'm going to do painfully now is uh slowly hold the Smoothie button the new one over the top and drag it over and it should iron out all the little pieces nice to see like the frame wiring of the map but uh you can see it drop a little bit I had a problem recently when I've uploaded the terrain from the template map and it was dropping drastically I mean like it wasn't acting the way the smooth tool should work uh if it's doing that um you need to reload your height map I think is the way I fixed it uh I don't know why I think it's cuz I went from from a map that was coded for 2K map and I put a 4K map on it and um when you click on terrain over here in your scam tree you can see all the settings uh and this I think it was the base text wasn't set right for the map so uh yeah 4K seems to be working okay now though so happy days now we got this Kink I know this Kink will send a c flying so um why just smoing out a little bit I'm just going to increase the circle I can tell by the terrain it's not going to be in fit too much apart from this big one I don't mind if it goes down but big is a problem so I'm going to try and Avid where it goes up and it should Hope just go down yeah there we go it's holding it down and then that's taking that kink out now it's not abnormal to see big Kinks like this in real life so I'm not going to take it out too much I just want to take some of the harshness out obviously when it comes to testing the map you'll know more about where you want to edit the map I'm doing this basically just smoothing the road out first and then I'll test drive it and I'll see if there's any big Kinks or anything like that afterwards and note them and fix them now while you're going around smoothing out your map you might notice some grass in your way so do feel free to delete the glass with some as oh no with some asphalt um you may be the kind of person just wants to go back and forth on the road doing one stage at a time don't blame you it can make mistakes and forget to do things and Miss sections if you don't do in stages now the roads we've made are flat I mean they flat through the corners they flat up the straights and just flat everywhere hopefully that's what we aim for if you're the kind of person who wants to put camber to the corner there's couple ways you can try and do that you can try and sculpt it I guess is the best way to pronounce that um put the pressure low get your circle right if it's a sharp corner I recommend just you know line up the outside the circle going down and that will bring the edge in giving you a bit of a slope and then smoothing it out with the Smoothie tool [Music] or I think that's enough or you can also use the mesh tool you can redraw your circle out click on certain nodes use the uh whatever the botton that is to make sure they're pointing across and then you can actually tilt the mesh Road a bit get nice smoo and you can make a camed corner like that and then just follow the other instructions hey so you should now have a relatively smooth Road what I recommend you do now is test it make sure it's smooth make sure the corners aren't too sharp or too big for your liying and anywhere need smoothing out smoothing it out let's give my little road to test shall we here's a little short video oh my God it's cold in this studio oh if you like this s eff and helped you do hit the like button let's go test this road out in the manic Recon remember description you want to try this guy around I'm so cold I've got a hoodie and a old dressing gown on who cares about video quality when it this just one point for us making you beautiful gr content what we're doing okay on the screen ruin my video right there we go I'll put on the screen okay so we're going to be looking at the road now that we just built for you and we test it out I recommend you do the same jump on your controller or your s r and uh it's HT off traction control that's for sure and uh yeah just just give it a go is it what you expected are the corners as wide cuz remember you not you might not be building a road like this you might be building yourself a Town Road but you still need to put it on a hill or something who knows but uh yeah test it out make sure your cars rting the way it should be it's not just jumping up and down the RO to py or you know you can't take Corners at decent speed because you've made them too small like I've done many times don't worry you won't be the first person to make the mistakes that you're making everyone makes mistakes and it's hard to oh no it's hard to judge the way things my days should be uh in a map because you're not actually in it it's only until you really got on it and giving it a spin that you feel like you you may have achieved what you were aiming for and it's ending time and time again with repercussions reactions Oh my days until you actually just get itly right the first time the point is have fun and enjoy building maps and I crashed that's all right though we had lots of fun hopefully you've managed to learn something today and you're ready to make your own perfectly smooth and desirable Road next video will be us putting those trees around so hopefully you stick around for that keep it real stay safe and share the love [Music] bye-bye
