Basic Go Shapes of Life and Death

[Music] [Music] welcome back I'm Stephanie in in our last videos we have talked about the basic rules of go so in this video I'm going to teach you a very important concept life-and-death lingo okay so what is a life-and-death and then why is a life-and-death very important so basically life and death is how do we protect our group from attack so you know life and death making an eyes is very important so once of a group of stones are surround to one space at least one space that's called eye if this group of black stones around the two spaces that's also hi if surrounds three space that's also eye so why why do we need a two eyes a living group needs to have a two eyes as I mentioned it before making an eyes or making a life is to protect our group from our attack so if we only have a one eye and when I'm get surrounded by white is this an illegal point for white or that's a capture move the answer is that's a cap to move because this black stone is already surrounded by white and this group only has one Liberty left so once it's don't block the last Liberty it can capture the entire group so if we only have a one eye that's not enough or that's not good enough to protect our group but if we if we have a two eyes like this even though we're gets we we get surrounded by white when we have a to ice is this grouping will be in danger or we're totally fine so if this group gets surrounded by white it's white able to play that's the answer is no because that's an illegal point that's not a capture move because this group still have a one Liberty left here and what about this putt here is that illegal point or capture move the answer is it's also a legal point because this stone doesn't have any Liberty left and this entire black group has one Liberty left so that's not a capture move so that's illegal point that means y can never play either here or here so in other words this entire black group always have a to Liberty left so white can never kill this group so making two eyes will secure our group because one where it gets surrounded we always have a to Liberty left okay okay so when we get surrounded by our opponent and we already know we have to have a two real separated ice and these eyes have to be a real eyes so what's the different between real eyes and a full size so the real why will can never get captured but the full side will eventually get captured by our opponent so if I replace this white stone to black is this a group of life that means are these two eyes are realized the answer is yes because white Canyon or play here that's a legal point for white nor here that's also a legal point for white because there's no Liberty left afford the stone but if I replace this wax down to white stone my question is is this still a life group or it's not yet or it's dead okay let's try it like I mentioned it before the real I can never be captured or destroyed but the full side will eventually get captured or destroyed is why able to play in to capture the entire group so in conclusion if the group only has one real eye that's that group so according to the rule this entire group is already dead in other words it's already trapped so at the end of the game we're going to remove all of the stones as the dead stones so you don't actually need to use the two moves to capture they're already dead okay and so see the world what do you talk about the real eyes and the full size let's talk about the basic shapes of eleven down okay so if we have to space inside of this shade is this a one eye or two eyes a lot of people say I have a to space so it must be your two eyes but the answer is no a living group has to have a two separated eyes it can be connected so if we have a to space connected that's called the street - which is the will play somewhere else and you have to show me why that's group it's dead and then white will play any move outside because this group is already surrounded now let's try inside if Y goes here it looks like it's very bad move because that stone will get captured but after the stone got captured let's a look at the entire black group this group only has a one Liberty left that means white will able to capture the entire group so if we have a street to this group only has one eye then it's a dead group but what about I have a one more space inside this chamber is called straight three because we have a three spacing side and is the straight is this already in a life or you need a move to make a life the answer is black still need to make use of move to make a life if black goes here you will be the the previous question we talked about it's a straight two is already dead and if white and black goes here is also straight to is dead so black should take the vital point in the middle which will will help black to make a live now black has two eyes and the question is are these two eyes are realized or full size so let's try it if Y goes here it's an illegal point then that's a real eye that's an illegal point because it doesn't have any Liberty left and this move is also a legal point because it doesn't have any Liberty left that means these two eyes are realized so the straight three is already alive by after black could play the vital points here okay what about as Applewhite's turn right now it's weight able to kill this group or not so things will have a three spaces inside so one of the moves will be correct so let's try it if the white goes here it looks like not smart move because that will get captured and after black captured black hats two eyes and white goes here will be the simple same thing when black captures black has two eyes so there's only one choice left on the board which is in the middle that's also a vital point so after black white goes here if if black is trying to make a live black has to either go here or here but no matter where black is going to go there's always one Liberty left so the next move for a white will get will white will capture block if Flacco's here that would be the same thing white will capture in the entire black group so that means if white takes a vital point here the straight three it's dead okay so think so wherever you talk about straight three that's me let's change the different shapes what if I have a bend shape and it's also have a three space inside what do you think about this move what do you think about this question is is it already a life or black need to move to make life the answer is black still need to move to make a life which is very very similar to the question we talked about in the middle is a vital point so after what black goes here black has two eyes so if white plays the vital point here what only has one eye left okay so the bed three is also whoever ghost first will have an advantage if whackos first black is able to make a life away goes first what is able to kill okay all right so we already talked about the bed three and straight three what about have one more space and if it's a square it's a square shape what if I have a squared four I have a four space inside and as is a square shape the question is is black need a move to make life or this group is already live or it's already dead so there are always three types of love and death the first is already dead shape and the example will be straight too because no matter where you go question and the answer is yes if whack plays in the middle black has a three eyes right now so that's obviously alive you only need the two oh two eyes in order to make this group alive so that's the vital point for black to make it live is it the same no point for white to kill the answer is yes because after what goes here no matter where black is going to play it will be either straight three or bed three and white already got the vital point so it's already dead alright so the pyramid for is a sin to live and go do that questions okay so let's move to five space question okay maybe we're gonna do this one first okay we have them one more space on the bottom so this shape is called crust two five it looks like a cross it's called a crust to five or some people like to call this a flower five it looks like a flower okay so the crust of five has one more space than pyramid for then is it a debt already dead shape or need to move to make a life or is already a life shape since I have one more space the question that the answer is black still need to move to make a life why I already have a five space but why do I still need to play a move to make a life all right let's try it so if black played in the middle black has a four eyes so obviously this is a life but if blacks is no I think already alive because I have a five spaces already and then black played somewhere else on the board and white take the right appoint and now black has four spaces left on the board and black says okay I might be able to make it alive and let's try it if black plays here what does that shape look like there will be a pyramid for it we'll just talk about it and then white that's the letter point so the stripper's already did if black goes here that would be a pyramid for again and this way okay okay so in this question and this shape is called a reputa six it looks like a rabbit on the question okay it's here we have a six space inside okay so the reason why is it called a rabbit to six because it looks like a rabbit and maybe it doesn't these are two years and this is the buddy so that's why people like to call this reputa six so things we have one more space inside that's a six spaces already and what do you think is it already life do you need to move to make a life or it still need to move to make a life what do you think okay the answer is black still needs a so after black plays here black has one two three eyes so it's alive but if black doesn't play there and if white takes the vital point and if black girls here that's across the five is dead and why black goes here that's a bulky five and what gets the vital point here and black tails here that's also a bulky five and the white gets the vital point here so no matter where black is going to play it will be always one of the death shapes we have already talked about it so the pit and so the rabbit - six is also a sin to live and go to die question okay all right so these are pretty much all gonna play the next vital point so that means your opponent can never kill you the white goes here you're able to block the eye on the top so that's two eyes so been four is already a life group you don't need to play actually move to make a life what about I have a straight for the fourth space inside and it's straight that's also already a live shape because like what I've mentioned in earlier there are two by two points it white goes here you're gonna block on the top there are two eyes if white goes on the top you're going to block on the bottom there are two eyes so the street for is also already a life shape okay and then we have last already a live shape question it's called rectangular six it looks like a rectangular and it has a six space inside so rectangular six is also already a live shape because it has a two by two points here black and white goes down the left black is going to block on the right and if white keeps playing on the top black is able to make it the eye on the bottom so it has a two ice a bit same thing so black is always able to get one of the vital points if white goes on the top on the right and the black is going to play on the left and then you'll be same question which is same same picture same variation we'll just talk about okay so the rectangular six is already a live shape so remember if the shape with more than six points no matter what shape is is that is always already alive so if the shape with a six space inside it depends on what the shape looks like if the shape is a rectangular is already live but is the shape is a rabbit
