the Koufax and Mickey Mantle Mickey I'll let you think of something first sandy you were right you said Seaver would pitch a gem and he did he just I thought looked great all through the ballgame he started off a little slower than he finished was about the fourth inning on yeah great stuff a great control I think he got a little tired in the ninth but oh no I think was just a great ball game three games to one Bucky you're sitting there with Baltimore and deal for the driver car well I'm not laughing anymore I don't know about the Orioles but I'm getting a little mad I think that everything that could happen has happened for the Mets they just they've just done great and I don't even know what to look for when I go back out there anymore well everybody is talking about believe it or not not the great catches of Swoboda and Jones are they hitting but rather of the final play when Martin one of the ball Richert came over pick it up and through now according to this morning's papers we didn't hear it yesterday at the ballpark some are saying that JC Martin was out of the baseline and should have been declared out do you think so sandy well first of all I got to say Martin made a fine bunt I think you can see here that he is inside in fair territory as he's going down the first base line there is that double white line about 45 feet from first base it runs halfway down the base runner is supposed to be in that if he's not the umpire can declare him out I just didn't see it yesterday I don't know if anybody saw it yesterday I just know that I'd hate to be the umpire that had to make that decision yesterday at Shea Mickey did it ever occur to you that he was out of the baseline I wasn't watching the runner quite so much the left-handed pitcher is the one that come in and fielded the ball and really Ellie Hendricks the catcher is a right-handed Claire he's running toward first base and toward the mound he wouldn't have had to throw the ball quite so close to the base runner but in a world series like this you know and you got the winning run on third base anyway you don't really have enough time to get together that that's soon well a controversial and amazing World Series continues and we'll discuss more of it in a moment as we'll return with more of World Series report [Music] delicious smokers of America do yourself a flavor make your next cigarette for tipple at cherry burgundy or natural from Muriel cigars this is Gatorade the greatest thirst quencher ever made says who says the New York Yankees the Minnesota Twins the Cincinnati Reds the Detroit Tigers the Chicago White Sox the Oakland Athletics fact is Gatorade has become the official thirst quencher of baseball and oh yes the Main Street Hawks say it tastes so good it makes you glad you get thirsty Gatorade the big thirst quencher Mickey I know you've been in a lot of World Series you played a lot about you in the World Series but gee whiz they've only talked about g on frito and a morose before this series then they began to talk about Tommie Agee's two great catches of two days ago but there was a great catch by Swoboda yesterday and it was one earlier by Cleon Jones well it just seems like every time that one of the Mets running dives with ball flies into his glove somewhere yeah I've never seen plays like this I've played in 13 World Series myself and watched a lot of them I've never seen plays like these it's Cleon Jones all the ball hit by Davey Johnson is that your comment any such thing as good pitching without good defense and this is just what the Mets have had every time they've had a chance to run and stick out a glove somewhere when the guy got out there was a ball in it so I remember one time when Casey was was our manager we was playing I don't remember the team was playing but I remember a comment he made after the game said that the outfielders were just running around sticking their gloves out that's what it looks well glendenning's home run was the only run of the game until the 9th sandy and that's where Seaver had a slight letdown yeah I thought he got tired a little bit when he did get tired I think he stopped pitching started threw the ball off he had Frank Robinson at the plate and he looked like he tried to sneak a fastball by on the inside corner to Frank and tried to throw it by him in there and it's a good pitch to Frank I think that's where you have to pitch him but this one he just maybe didn't quite have enough on Frank hit the line drive into left field and I think possibly he still had a little problem with his foot his instep because both mickey and I thought Frank would probably try for a second when he didn't boog singled into right field and Frank went around a third and set the stage for us we'll vote his great catch with two out Mickey this is the play of the game maybe of the series yeah Brooks Robinson hits the ball into right-center this is this is the best play I've ever seen in my life as far as I'm concerned it saved this game for him and it was one of those plays where he didn't catch the ball and then dive he had to dive the length of his body for a little farther to catch the ball and he catches it in the air as he's diving sandy and I didn't think that he could have that's the only spot in that play where he could have caught that ball if he tried to run back and cut it off on a first bounce or something we don't think he could card it would have went all the way to the wall and Boog Powell would have scored well now we go to the tenth inning and here's another controversial play again and I'll go to Mickey well this is my man Buford he's had a bad leg himself and he was playing kind of deep there but I'm almost sure this ain't the reason that he didn't catch that ball with it because he lost it in the Sun this is what you talked about the amazing Mets here a fella looks up to the heavens and loses the ball somebody up there likes them I think that somebody up there really likes them I'd read somewhere about the I don't know very much about astrology I don't believe or I didn't believe in it before I'm starting to believe in it now I think that somebody up there taking care of them well Brody goes down to second they put Gasper in to run for him with nobody out they walk our whites and then they send up JC Martin to bat for Tom Seaver and what's not out sandy everybody knew that mark was gonna bunt definitely I think Gil Hodges told him to bunt down to that side cuz it tough play for the left hand pitcher to make if it's bunted to third I live in an easier play for a left hand pitcher and as it turned out it was the ball game and this is not what was described as the dead Mets of the first day of the series sandy you said something earlier discussing this plate as a left-hander on the mound in the World Series would you have made the play that record made I'll be honest bad and fielders I was at any fun enough making difference it was the World Series or not I would have let the catcher coming out trying to make the play and if I had to make it in that situation I might have intentionally grounded it take your chances with the play at the plate well yeah I just was not that good at feel the right to catch the ball right I had trouble throwing to bases well we've got to look ahead today it could be the final day and we will in a moment as well return with more of World Series report I'm Colonel Harland Sanders and I'd like to tell you a little bit about my Kentucky Fried Chicken hey you two coming you go ahead on it I want to talk to these folks a little bit longer now I said Kentucky Fried Chicken there's only one way to cook Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken and that's my way we always use plump young brawlers always fresh never frozen chicken it's cut in pieces than each piece of dipped in milk and egg wash then into seasoned flour in which we have the 11 different spices herbs for flavor one more thing folks it's the only way that you're going to get chicken than it's finger lickin good and I'd be mighty proud to have you try Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken mighty proud excuse me border will you please hey litter there didn't I tell you it was finger lickin good Kentucky fine city if you want Kentucky Fried Chicken you have chase Stadium will go positively insane today if Jerry Koosman does do it Sandeen is going against Dave McNally the last time this hookup came you said that you had to believe off the basis of that League Championship game we saw McNally pitches well the strongest pitching jobs that he's that you've seen in two or three years he's got to have it today well I think McNally is in a lot of ways in the same situation that Tom Seaver was yesterday I think probably he came into the second game having too much rest he's the kind of pitcher that has to have good control to win Koosman on the other hand with great stuff like Jerry has he can be just a little less on top of his control and pitch a great game and he did in the in the second game but I'd have to say today that I'm looking for McNally to pitch a great game are these pitchers similar other than being left-handers well they each throw the same pitches but I don't think you could say that they're similar with Jerry Koosman that his best pitch is probably a fastball with McNally I think his best pitch is his curve in his slider he's got a good fastball but it wouldn't be that good without the other two they keep you got you start let you charts out if you consulted them what do you what do you think well I think the Orioles are in this position about like Custer was when he told his man he'd take no prisoners but they've got to make something happen they can't sit back and wait for a break to help them now it looks to me like the breaks have all been going the other way and this is a time when when that old saying that if something is not happen make it happen would be a good good thing to use today because they're just gonna have to start trying to do something that is Wow so this is the last game you know what we didn't bring up Earl Weaver was thrown out of the game first time a manager since 1935 I think that that might have hurt him a little bit because when you play the whole year with a guy and you've done good as they have done you you learned that whatever he says goes and even though Billy Hunter is probably he's been there all year right with him and he's probably doing the same things that Weaver would have done it's still not like having your leader there so it might have hurt him a little bit you know I'll bring up one more thing because it was in the Baltimore baseball program for the World Series they pointed out that the bullets when the Eastern Division of the National Basketball Association didn't make it to the finals the Colts won the NFL last year the Jets beat him in the Super Bowl Baltimore declared the team of the decade in the American League and they could lose three in a row for Baltimore talk about the amazing Mets Baltimore would go mad we'll be back with a final prediction but after these messages on World Series report okay mister triple threat what's it gonna be are you kidding mom Gatorade iterates with the pro strength it's sure great when you're thirsty Jimmy if you keep this up I'm gonna need a bigger refrigerator just for the Gatorade fill her up mom Gatorade tastes so good it makes you glad to get their Gatorade the big thirst quencher for active people this man is going on a Latin American tour you see in every Dutch master cigar are four great tobacco's from Latin America first stop Brazil and it's flavorful tobacco then Center Domingo Maya next rich tobacco from Columbia and lively tobacco from Puerto Rico four great tobacco's you get a Latin American tour in every Dutch master cigar forget Custer's last stand this might be our last an all right team of experts what do you think sandy well I said I thought McNally was in the picture great ballgame I'll be honest I don't think it's gonna be enough I think the great ball game probably won't do it I think Baltimore is believing in the Mets now and they're waiting for something to happen they're not going out trying to win they're wondering what's gonna happen to him now Mickey well it was two elevators here at the studio this morning when I came up and I was afraid to make a choice I'm gonna go down with the oh we may be back in Saturday from Baltimore maybe not Jim Simpson with Sandy and Tony Kubek is roaming the stands as we'll give you today's coverage and of course rhubarb swirled late into the night last night and right up here until game time today first about the ejection of the manager of the Baltimore Orioles Earl Weaver the home plate umpire shag Crawford explained it an automatic expulsion where we were protesting a ball and strike and then on JC Martin's bunt running to first base he was struck to the left wrist pictures last night showed that he was running inside the foul line in fair territory we're going to rerun the play for you and show you the outcome of that play and Lindsey will explain the statement here made at 12:30 Eastern time by the home plate umpire Crawford and the Commissioner of baseball about the outcome of that decision they pitchers today Dave McNally has the job now of trying to send this series back to Baltimore and his Baltimore's last home McNally lost on Sunday two to one that Jerry Koosman the left-hander for Billings Montana who lives now Baltimore going all the way for the Mets Jerry Koosman who pitched a brilliant two hitter against Baltimore Sunday was finally relieved in the ninth inning he's coming back for the Mets today and we were talking to Brooks Robinson before the game and he said so far the Met pitchers have been the toughest set of pitchers on one staff that he or his teammates have ever hit again but now let's get into some of the key plays of yesterday and more pregame dope and here is Lindsey Nelson thank you very much Curt Goudy and hello again everybody as you know everything that happens in the World Series is magnified a thousandfold especially if it's a pivotal ballgame like yesterday's the Mets now have once they're in a commanding position but keep in mind last year at this same time the st. Louis Cardinals led the Detroit Tigers three games to one and Detroit won the world championship so now let's look at some of those plays that were roundly discussed all around the town last night it was Brooks Robinson up there with runners at first and third in the ninth the Mets were leading one nothing in Ron Swoboda comes over makes a diving catch call by many of the greatest defensive play of this World Series Robinson tagged and scored the tying run afterwards but he prevented Boog Powell at first from moving up and so it was a 1-1 ballgame in the bottom of the 10th and Jerry Grote's up to leadoff for the New York Mets gaudí lost the pop fly into medium left-field lost in the glare Buford stayed back and then made the charge forward but lander went back and says he did not touch them all as you see it fall there it went for two bases as it was recovered by Don Buford that was a leadoff double then for Jerry grote as he went sliding into second that became the winning run rod Gasper came in to run for grote al Weiss was up next and he was intentionally walked with first base open then Gil Hodges hit for Seaver he said JC Martin up and Pete Richert was brought in to pitch to it sacrifice he bunts the ball Hendricks the catcher says that he yell and he thought that he would make the play in the den of Shea Stadium Ricker said he didn't Europe watch him Dick's think thinking that he has waived off the pitcher reaches for the ball Rickard gets it first watch Mart now down the line as the throw is made he has hit on the left wrist he's clearly there inside as the ball bounced away off the left wrist of JC Martin onto the grass in short right the winning run scored as Gasper across the plate of the Mets won the ballgame by a score of 2 to 1 now there was a still picture that was being circulated at Prez headquarters last night it showed Martin to be in fair territory and the rule states of course that if he is hit in fair territory that is in at first he should have been called out Earl Weaver says he didn't see the picture till he got back to the hotel and wishes that he had never seen it the Commissioner made a statement saying that it is not an appeal play that it is simply a judgment call it says that he thought that at the moment that the ball hit JC Martin Martin's right foot was on the foul line which would make him in proper position those of the statements made at 12:30 by Crawford and the Commissioner now let's go downstairs to Tony Kubek Thank You Lindsay with me in the commissioners box Joe DiMaggio and the Commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhn mr. Commissioner you had a tough statement to make this morning about the controversial play late in the ball game yesterday would you like to make it again well it wasn't too tough as far as I was concerned Tony I talked to the umpire shag Crawford on the throw by Rick at the first base and it was his judgment that the ball player going down the line Martin was permissibly within the running Lane and I've accepted his judgment that is the end of it Jodi you've seen such great feeling plays so far in this world series down in Baltimore up here in New York Shea Stadium you of course were part of that famous algee and frito catch you hit the ball are these toppers oh yes I do recall that when I hit Angie on frito catch but I'd have to say to the catcher dice are here here the day before yesterday and yesterday's catch we're about as fine as catches you want to see in World Series play particular one Swoboda made yesterday because that was the ballgame I didn't think he had a chance for that ball well you know it's the play where an outfielder doesn't even have a chance to think anything move now or he doesn't do it at all well that is true he had to die because there's no way he back enough to catch it on the hopper they got by him anyway slavery Jodi thank you so much mr. Commissioner thank you so much Tony now let's go on back upstairs now we're ready for the player introduction for the Naismith game good afternoon ladies and gentlemen welcome to Shea Stadium for the fifth game of the 1969 World Series here are the official lineups first the Baltimore Orioles here is the manager of the Orioles number four Earl Weaver batting first playing left field number nine Don Buford batting second playing centerfield number 6 Paul Blair batting third playing right field number 20 Frank Robinson batting fourth playing first base number 26 John Powell number five rooks Robinson batting sixth playing second base number 15 Dave Johnson batting seventh catching number eight Andy etchebarren batting eighth playing shortstop number seven mark Belanger batting ninth pitching for the Orioles number nineteen warming up in the Oriole bullpen Dave McNally here are the remaining players fair and coaches of the Baltimore Orioles now the New York Mets there's the manager the vet number 14 Gil Hodges batting first playing centerfield number 20 Tommie Agee batting second playing shortstop number three bud batting third playing left field number 21 Cleon batting fourth playing first place number 22 [Applause] laying right there number four six playing third base number five edy charge batting seventh catching catching number 15 Jerry grody batting eighth playing second base number six Wow white [Music] pitching pitcher warming up the Mets bullpen for man number 36 36 Jerry Koosman here are the remaining players and coaches of the New York Mets ladies and gentlemen gentlemen boys and girls in German please rise for our national anthem which will be sung by the noted Broadway stage and recording star miss Pearl Bailey [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] burro bailey national anthem and will be under way with Game five of the World Series as the Baltimore Orioles meet the New York Mets [Applause] all right [Music] we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network the honor of throwing out the first ball for Game five goes to Joe DiMaggio recently voted as the greatest living major league ballplayer Babe Ruth was ready for the greatest player of all time don't go there's posture draw to eat plate in 10 World Series and they loved him in his town a graceful matchless performer is a centerfielder Bowie Kuhn the Commissioner alongside him and in the commissioners box there we have dick Forbes the director of advertising Chrysler on the Left Carl Linderman the president sports of the National Broadcasting Company mrs. Kuhn and other dignitaries the meeting at home plate Earl Weaver and Gil Hodges and just before the Mets take the field here is Lindsay Nelson [Music] for the World Championship here at Shea Stadium before the home club the Orioles aware the 32 three-game winning streak and manager Earl Weaver says they are professionals they don't feel the pressure especially at 17 times during the season that they had three-game winning streak that first face it's Don clendenon for the Mets at second base it is our life the shortstop is bud Harrelson and around a third Ed Charles Leone Jones is in left field Tommie Agee is in centerfield and Ron Swoboda is in right field the catcher is Jerry grody [Music] and Jerry Koosman who warmed up down in the bullpen under the watchful eye of met pitching coach rube Walker has not yet made an appearance there is Koosman toweling off before getting ready to come out onto the mound earlier this year he had some shoulder difficulty but once he got that straightened out he had a great second half and has one victory at coming last Sunday and there is competition it is Jerry Koosman out now to take his warmup pitches talking to him just before the ball game of pot where his home was actually located because we had always listed him as Appleton Minnesota he said well actually now it's a place 11 miles away at Morris Minnesota but that actually he grew up not an either place he grew up on a farm some 12 or 13 miles out of town he used to play catch with his brother Orville Koosman he used to be the catcher and Orville was the pitcher he got to throwing them back harder than Orville was throwing to him so arbol said you be the pitcher here's his delivery he's what they call sneaky fat and he'll give you that fastball at two or three different speeds [Music] during the course of the season through the mirror of the American League at home plate today lee weyer of the national league at first thanks ur of the American League at last 31 innings 1 on a base then the other a line drive and that fantastic catch by Swoboda at the top of the ninth inning yesterday right boy blasting Brooks Robinson before the game just how good are these met pitchers and he said plenty good they're the hardest throwing set of pitchers I've ever hit against changeup one-on-one on deck is Dave Johnson Robinson thought Seaver was the quickest of the pitchers he hit against one ball two strikes no score we're in the top of the second now it holds one ball two strikes to Brooke Robinson Kurt Koosman was signed for a bonus of $1,200 Scout red last of the second on the corner nothing into the grody one ball two strikes the Orioles have not alibied the position they're in right now they give the Mets full credit the 1 2 pitch a fly ball in the deep right-center horseback for Sudan manager the Orioles Earl Weaver said look they've made the plays when I grab you off why they're winning and you talk to the various royal powers they have nothing but praise for the Met pitching and I met fielding [Applause] two down nobody on and Al Weiss Nevada he's had four hits in seven times up batting 571 in the war Pro Series and now the curves him it's low and of course he knocked in the winning run against McNally last Sunday in the top of the ninth inning three up and three down at the end of two innings the score is nothing to nothing [Music] well [Music] well it's certainly been the exciting year for baseball here in New York model they'd never been matched before been that way across the country with a new traditional setup some baseball join a wild race in the Western event of the National League record attendances this year we hope you've enjoyed Major League Baseball especially on the game of the week during the season mark Belanger leads off for the Orioles and fouls a tie Lander of 2 for 12 of course the highlight of the entire season has been the rise of the myth the balloon on the field one way to handle it I'd expect that's the best possible way to handle it Melander McNally and Buford for the Orioles are sitting one ball one strike that's Dave McNally one late just got a piece one ball two strikes the Orioles have the only hit so far Dave Johnson single mayor Lindsay loop's it in the right field on a curveball flam Bollinger improved he's averaged two months look out trying to push him up [Applause] [Music] and Gaudi followed the runner up to cover the bag thanks to throwing our lid one tag at the Landrus back and then Brodie tempted to push him off the bag every night here you are making the safe call I don't believe the lander was too happy with that tag there's a drive by McNally hit the deep left field [Music] three last season and one this season now the first pitch now he has the Orioles out in front two to nothing all wondered on duper nobody on nobody out Baltimore leading to the nothing let's crack - I am one-on-one Paul didn't take long to get out of here Lindsay certainly doesn't dropped it right over the wall into the Oreo bullpen foul out of play one into two Buford who grounded the shorties first time it's an optimistic but Harrelson has to hurry and he gets the fleet guru [Applause] one down the man like beautiful flowing down the line why are the pressure on the infielder he knows you're presenting he has to charge and get rid of that ball in a hurry Paul Blair flied to Center his first time this boy hit 300 all year until he went into a slump in September right Robertson [Music] irbaz inside but end of the slump he said he was jerking his head now they say keep your eyes on the ball he was taking his eyes off the ball of this one jerking his head around look out nearly into the Baltimore Oriole box over there for their club executives one ball two strikes to Paul Blair the fractured ankle 67 recovered from him was not one of the best defensive centerfielders in baseball and a good hitter 1 into 2 him [Music] him out on a curve for Old Bailey who sang the national anthem not just one of those pandas comes to a game when the World Series is on she's out here all summer rooting for the Mets [Music] two down for the Orioles Frank Robinson up he flied to right his first time looking back to last year's will risk their World Series we remember home runs by Bob Gibson and Mickey Lally there's a long felt by Robinson forget that when it's gone nobody moved into MIT outfielder in Robinson slams it in a deep left center and the Orioles lead 3 to nothin and this is the kind of hitting that the Orioles had all year until September 7th when they went into a team batting slump during the last three or four weeks of the season but still had the pitching and defense to win Gil Hodges is usual in passing south that's the fourth World Series home run for Frank Robinson ball one to Boog Powell get one in 61 - and 66 playing with the Reds in 61 and then this one right now Brida nothing I was leading the curve is low ball two do down nobody on Weaver the Oriole man going to break loose um it's gotta be the Dare it's all over [Music] my god the way we're doing do what Wow doing too [Music] frankly we run three hits there were no errors nobody left at the end of two and a half innings its Baltimore three and the Mets nothing [Music] tony kubek Hello Dolly all right burrow deep you almost deafening you eat the hot dog like a two Mets fan I tell you everybody's gotten so nervous no no Jerry as god I said he had [Applause] Valley or the net where he's on that walked in the burqa [Applause] four hits all season and they're all single or head to 84 all right AG watch his first time [Music] the Orioles are leading three to nothing last to the third [Applause] [Applause] [Music] strike one ball one strike bud Harrelson's I'm decadent Leon Joan sir was high doing why [Applause] that's kruseman I'm second they'll have the windbreakers on today its 61° when a wind blowing they can chill off very quickly the 2-1 pitch ball three [Music] [Applause] [Applause] it's a high pop shallow center ball Blair coming on run away who's been staying at second Harrelson the next met batter struck out his first bang [Applause] [Music] who's been with his latest second one out now back practicing his stance and he's cut Leon Jones on deck i watch breakfast beautiful curve by McNally nothing into well it's either going to be over here today or we'll be in Baltimore Saturday with Gentry against Palmer probably that's there's some surprise moves by the two managers foul ball Eddie Yost who used to play a mess a third base for the Senators third base coach of the Mets one out Jerry Koosman at second last of the third Baltimore is ahead three to nothing who strikes to bud Harrelson 1 & 2 to him now I guess that ball placed in that pocket now ball doesn't pitch with a big wind up you'll notice gets these fingers in position and then hides that ball one ball two strikes to bud Harrelson bringing out and strike that number three the Dave McNally there two down and Cleon Jones better now she's flying to ride he's placed on [Applause] now he's had an incredible record since the all-star game of 1968 he's won 34 and lost nine in the last year and a half [Music] Baltimore three runs four hits New York no runs one hit [Music] Leon John's gets to all fields he's played just about straightaway by the Oriole outfield ball one to him Don clendenon on deck Paul to some of these fantastic caches we've had in the world series have come about because the players have been and just about the right position to make them the two clubs thoroughly scouted each other you can have Scott reports but the pictures have to throw to the hitters the way that you want them to and get the ball where they want to and both sides have been doing this two balls no strikes don't do the good breaking ball hitter pitches over doing one Baltimore leading three to nothing last of the third coos but if ii do down [Music] fouls it off doing two count who's been let off us anything with a double he's still on second AG flying out and there else was struck out the 2 2 pitch coming up to Cleon Jones and he pops it up Boog Powell Dave Johnson converging look out we've got it Wow yeah Johnson off no runs one hit there were no errors one left at the end of three innings its Baltimore three and the Mets nothing [Music] this is number one one two three four one two three four [Music] neither [Music] [Music] Satchmo Louis Armstrong sitting there a touch you're always a great ball fan here at Shea Stadium remember the World Series goes seven games on Sunday you'll see another baseball football doubleheader NBC coverage beginning at 1:30 Denver at Centenario San Diego at Boston Miami at Kansas City Buffalo at Oakland if the World Series is over on Sunday they'll have to American Football League game in the fourth inning brooks robinson leaves Offin brooks grounded out his first time the shark jerry koosman's pitch a ball doing Dave Johnson's on deck and Andy etchebarren one-on-one to Robinson the land you're single in the third McNally homered then with two down Frank Robertson homer and the Orioles have three runs four hits the Mets no runs one doing one count [Music] thousand understand a high flyball left-center tom agee calling for one away [Applause] they Johnson the buyers have been only three teams in their series history who have been down three games to one and have come back to win the World Championship Pittsburgh did it in 1925 against the Senators the Yankees in 1958 against Milwaukee crack one the dave johnson who single the left his first time and the Tigers last year we're down three games to one and then beat the Cardinals their Orioles are down three games to one coming into this game nothing into two Johnson Oh half swing Koosman with an easy play two down [Applause] and the etchebarren will be the next battery wrapped in their horse plays first time tell aside from the two home runs by McNally and Frank Robinson never the Winston sort of quiet so far strike this is the top of the fourth inning one on one we let you Baron mark Belanger on deck [Music] pounding ball Oh Mike any at the end of three and a half innings Baltimore three New York nothing [Music] we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network Kurt Goudy with Lindsay Nelson of tony kubek walk before fire [Music] and now they drop the curve doing for a strike Ron Swoboda is on deck and Annette Charles like to when deadens a busiest batter in a series at the plate watching eyes wiggling and waggling the two strike pitch fastball one and two [Music] [Music] or swag not for Dave McNally [Music] Miller Dennis wasn't too happy with a call [Music] now they watch two in the first half three three and two counts now seems to be pitching himself into some control one out nobody on Swoboda struck out his first time nothing a one to him yet Charles will be up next like one out nobody on 1 & 2 [Applause] the fastball is going that's the second tip for the network and matters s cars have rounded out the 31st time Orioles on that four hits the net for that too it in a curve nothing I wanted Charles [Music] we'll both at first it's all only one base all year one-on-one Baltimore's ahead three to nothing you Mets are batting here in the last of the four very grody due up next I'll let you burn [Applause] down gonna handle many higher foul pops than that one we have to away from the remote infirm and Jerry grote the cashier why the center in a second [Music] [Music] getting right [Music] one on one the Jerry grody [Music] do away Ron Swoboda at first [Music] [Music] [Music] that understands again the Tony thank you wouldn't be one of the great baseball fans in the world touch yard shut I know your giant family really made fan but we pulled for this theory the hometown the Mets I'm blowing workers as our hometowns the only one other town I'd root for the San Francisco they can't do anything wrong County no they can't Gil's doing a great job Hodges I think it's all the best job of handling his men and running a baseball team as good as any man I've ever known in my life cut short thank you very much let's go back upstairs mark Belanger takes ball one he looked a single or right then came in to score on McNally's homer in the third Dave McNally will be up next one-on-one there's the Slugger flanger was a great basketball player at Pittsfield Massachusetts high school fouled out of play he has those loose actions in the field that said Kelly must have been quite a basketball player 1 2 pitch doing fly ball the right elbow to right therefore and there's one down Dave McNally homered his first time there's that professional sign artist he must be exhausted at the end of the year he paints sixty signs for every game the filesystem telling a one one out nobody on break2 to McNally the Orioles are leading three to nothing in the top of the fifth inning 57,000 397 has been announced as the paid attendance Jerry Koosman was popular at Shea Stadium your career winning nine and losing 39 he was runner-up in his rookie year last year the Johnny Bench of the Reds as Rookie of the Year in this 40 year nearly a month this season with a he called it a numb shouldered in the Lindley just a stiff numb shoulder it was a muscle underneath the shoulder there they had a little trouble diagnosing it for a while he missed a month and still won 17 games this year Don Buford looks for that fastball for a strike Buford twice has grounded to short the Orioles have two down nobody on they have Paul Blair on deck outside one on one the Buford berelson playing in a step or two on him and his child even with a bag of their one ball two strikes did obviously flights are out here it's getting darker overcast over TV sir visit into right-center that ball is there is Ron Swoboda now moving that one to right center is backhanding the ball into the glove in full flight for the OP that retired the side well the Orioles are out 1 to 3 in the top of the fifth at the end of four and a half innings its Baltimore 3 and New York nothing [Music] I played the New York Rex Rochester Lindsey Nelson thank you very much Kurt Goudy and hello again everybody al Weiss takes a pitch low for ball one Weiss has had four hits in this world series tomorrow Andrew at shortstop and therefore a call strike one one David McNally had a shaky start today walk to him in him the first ending of his action in the Baltimore bullpen but he is settled down now through the Magnani at the Oriole fans know and love here's his swing and a Miss it's one and two and he has been posted to a three run lead he had a two-run home run and Frank Robinson hit one that's Jerry Koosman on deck now for the Mets unable to get anything started of substance against McNally here's a foul ball it's one and two Malley has struck out four and he's walked to those two walks in the very first inning trying to bring Baltimore home ahead to take this series back to Baltimore for game number six of the 1969 World Series [Music] I can out of play on the count holds at 1 and 2 to Alawite now why isn't his major league career has had 6 home runs one of them was off Dave McNally he had two of those six at Wrigley Field in Chicago against the Cubs on a crucial series earlier this year ground ball to third big hop up to Brooks Robinson guns it across to Powell in time and Weiss it up one away and Jerry Koosman peels off the jacket when you double down the left-field line in the third inning he is not known for his prowess with the back [Applause] I met you're batting here in the bottom half of the fifth inning they've had only two hits off Dave McNally devil by Koosman a single by Ron Swoboda of all backing out of play for strike one at that for a call strike the Mets were they're predominantly right-hand batting order here this afternoon against the left-hander it is they've adding order that produced one run in the first game of the World Series and two to get a win over McNally in the second game last Sunday yesterday it was the right hand batting order that produced the two runs to get a 2-1 win in 10 innings Tommy Agee is on deck to left-hand batting order that's wet the Atlanta Braves in the National League pennant for the Mets that scored five runs in game number three here in the Bible win swing and a Miss strikeout number five for Dave McNally two Mets are out in the fifth inning and Tommie Agee is coming up AG walk stole second any person he flied out to center field in the third he was the big hero of the Med victory in the third game of the World Series here day before yesterday Robinson Robinson made the barehanded dama 50 [Applause] what a first-time Robinson hasn't handled this ball looked like it took a hoppy to reach down with a bare hand watch it there that over the top of his hand he would have had to made some play to get Agee anyway it is scored as a base hit the third for the men they're a two man out in bud Harrelson's up switch hitter batting right flyball to centerfield and Paul Blair has it lined up so the side is out the Mets with no runs a hit no errors and one man left at the end of five full innings of play the score is the Orioles three and the Mets nothing [Music] we pause now for station identification [Music] Oh [Music] and nancy seaver tom's wife is the subject of that banner if it Lindsey Nelson with Curt Goudy and Tony Kubek at Shea Stadium in New York game number five of the 1969 World Series the Orioles are up in the sixth inning leading three nothing Guzman's pitch to Blair is low for a ball player flied to Center and struck out swinging I sign away for a while perhaps you recall yesterday seeing calm people walk back to second base umpire Lee Weyer at one point and then the ball was thrown out of play we were talking to Tom about that before the ball game today there's a swing the draught deep centerfield way back in a Jewish priests and one hands-off [Music] the AG looks like he nearly turns the wrong way on this one I asked the spinner rang another one hander by Tom Agee some can about feel play here in this world series there's one man out in Frank Robinson is up he lined or I feel in the first inning and he homered a long or run to left center in the third playing a fireball back Tom Seavers said that yesterday he looked down at the ball and discovered it was an American League ball so he walked back to the umpire and said do I have to use this and he said no so they exchanged it he said there wasn't much difference maybe no difference but he was surprised to find that it was an American League ball and he didn't know how it got in there here is a pitch in for a strike it's two strikes not a Robinson Joe Cronin's signature on one and Warren Giles on the other one that's this third Powell is on deck and Robinson is hit by the prow it's a foul ball [Laughter] [Laughter] Camero found the powerwall Robinson and Weaver are contended that he was hit by the pitch balls and they're asking him to ask the advice of Lee Weyer at first base yesterday I didn't back girl Weaver off any [Laughter] to keep his man in the game [Laughter] [Music] your manager goes back to the dugout parting little glass not true yes we call that there was a similar incident yesterday with Ed Charles is the message that when Gil Hodges came out to discuss the matter with our fire shag carpet at the time [Music] Robinson has gone back into the dugout George Bamberger the pitching coaches there with Weaver Bilu tomorrow [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] that runway goes back to the locker room [Applause] they Robinson went back over some treatment like the umpires asking where's Robinson I think it would be a fair question at this time [Music] look what by that crazier to their work on win scenario he did know that's filled word coming out that's Buford I think he did because I chose right back to the locker room where the trainer would be and I think he did go play has held up here in the World Series [Applause] [Music] as far as Met fans are concerned baseball as a participating sport they worked out of me his shirt off [Music] [Music] we're at formed with the trainer said he had a goose egg on his leg strike out there's one man out nobody on base the Oreos are batting in the top half of the sixth inning and they are leading the match by a score of three to nothing and this fifth game of the World Series [Music] on two is the count who back in the count holds at two strikes breaking pitch is high 2 goes to 1 & 2 [Music] [Music] delivery [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Boog Powell is coming up he's flied to left and struck out so far the true Dottie is pointed out Koosman likes to sidearm foul Paul is the only left-handed hitter in this ball game including both sides discounting of course appreciators Don Buford and bud Harrelson who are batting right today breaking pitch low and it's 2 and wife Brooks Robinson [Applause] Oreos three runs four hits the Mets no runs three years - to delivery sex swing pop out into Laos and it is booths I'll check the swing and just pops it out past Harrelson and allow all he was trying to do it was very the bat on the ball watch it here in slow motion it's going away from him you really have that rear end out there so whether owner at first and two men out its Brooks Robinson up now I grounded out short to first and flied to Center bring in a message strike line left-field and clear on dog makes the cat [Applause] [Music] setting the story [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] down to the rolling mr. Tony Kubik sitting down you're with me enough I just call them saps no the whole world Oh lump speaking about that's why you enjoy the ball game and everything John the whole series you met oh yeah we don't over win it but girls telling our you got to enjoy they both have good of a team you're a beautiful man look at parmesan thank you thank you let's go it back upstairs that young man appears to be a met fan he's got on all the sides we are Georgia's up now bottom half of the sixth inning Leon had gone over to slide the rice popped out to first base the Mets have had only three hits out of off of Dave McNally who's been thoroughly in command and it's all one he starts down the first place and de Muro calls him back Leon thought he was hit by the pitch yogi berra down from the coaching lines at first about halfway Gil Hodges carrying the baseball it's coming over now Hodges showing the baseball to Demerol I just we might have a shoe polish play here remember the nippy Jones shoe polish play in the 1957 World Series at Milwaukee I just showing it to Lou DiMuro [Music] [Applause] and here comes [Music] the safe two can play different approaches here from the managers Weaver's bore the fiery type when he comes out Hodgins this seems to be almost unemotional and he is heaving trying to make a point with an umpire Weaver still has a few words to say on the subject but he wants to feed the baseball he said let me see it let me see the shoe polish it was argued on ocelli I believe with all the shoe polish with nippy Jones of the Milwaukee Braves at the plate happy saw the topology awarded in first place so with nobody out the Mets have a baserunner [Applause] laughs and it's strike one Ron Swoboda is on deck Lindsay when Robinson went into evidently his Clubhouse and now he had a long wait and that dugout did have a long wait [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the Baron goes out now just to have a word with McNally who started a little shakily as horse control concerned today then settled on and became extremely sharp that's um had only three hits the Orioles are leading in the that every it wanted to I'm done came to the met this year from the montréal Expo and most the Pittsburgh Pirates one to delivery outside so it's 2-2 with Swoboda there on day with the weighted doughnut on the back this will be a 2 2 offering [Music] [Applause] watch this clear ball hanging right over the plate for me the current right over the plate to him [Music] [Laughter] photos up to our nobody on and nobody out [Music] [Laughter] [Applause] back at you baron can't get to it it's the foul ball out of play and strike one dick Hall I believe - Troy yes it is always up and throwing he was yesterday [Laughter] [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] number five man look at election there's McGraw the left-hander come alive [Applause] well it was [Applause] kid Charles is next in the order that you're batting in the bottom half of the sixth inning at Shea Stadium in New York back of second where its second by Dave Johnson who had good position they were playing from order to fall and he was practically behind the bag at second detector table right [Applause] on the Today Show and they bring two highlights at the World Series and talks with the stars of each game that's a great way to start the day Monday through Friday at 7 a.m. with one man out of nobody on here Charles is breaking pitches low bounce off the glove of Eddie Marin and it's ball one George's grounded out third to first and he's found out to the catcher Jerry grote Zonday [Applause] back is one in one now - he had Charles the night before the New York Mets clinched the National League pennant to get into the World Series I'm talking to Ed Charles and he was saying with some emotion I have waited 18 years and I'll never get another chance this was what he wanted to do get into a World Series and his eight professional baseball [Applause] McNally's to 150 on the ground Brooks Robertson with the bigger guns to Boog Powell and Charles is our two-way and Jerry grody will be the batter gotiya scarred the center and grounded into a force play so far it was Brody's fly ball 11 misjudged by Buford which became a double and the winning run independent Belanger across to Boog Powell and the side is out so it's two runs on one hit there's an on route the Orioles three and the net [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this Saturday night Andy Williams plays host to Don Knotts Ray Charles gasps Elliott the Osmond Brothers and the Creedence Clearwater Revival's join the fan it's the Andy Williams Show Saturday at 7:30 6:30 Central time on most of these NBC stations Dave Johnson's up he's 1 for 2 for a call strike one that's aberrant on deck the Orioles are batting in the seventh inning leading the match by a score of 3 to 2 live all on the rights to your Lodge for voter coming fast to the line foul territory [Applause] one man out and Andy etchebarren are coming up now he's rounded into a force play and grounded out second to first the outfield defense shades him to go to the opposite field mark Belanger is on deck like one swung himself out from underneath the helmet there you can see AG out and son who shaded over toward right and right fielder Swoboda move towards the line against the right-hand batter the only concession that manager Earl Weaver makes to platooning [Music] my husband back into the seats out of play and the count goes to two strikes to handy etchebarren he bats number seven and Earl Weaver's Baltimore batting order the birds want to win this one and take the World Series back to Baltimore where they need only a winning streak of two games in their home park against the world's championship [Applause] Sumaira nobody on base and mark Belanger is coming up pendulum later scored in the third inning he was on base and McNally hit his homer and Belanger flied out to right in the fifth inning Guzman has retired 12 of the last 13 strike one let's also expect my land you to take that ball to the opposite field been a little low and it's one one Orioles got all three runs in the third inning that's McNally on deck he had a two run over and then with two men out Frank Robinson hit alright while backing out of play 1 & 2 is the count the Orioles three runs five hits that's Tom Seaver come out of the Met dugout there to take a look around and let's keep talking my jaws rolling down in their bullpen here's a one-two pitch and it's it on the ground a short big hop up to bud Harrelson guns across to clendenon Belanger is out hope we can get one more run and quick I brought it down after you are a Mets fan though I sure am absolutely introduced to thank you so much right now honey let's go back upstairs all right it's our wise leading off for the Mets Koosman bats second in the order here in this Macross draw in the bullpen the pitch devices in for a called strike biases lined out to short and grounded out short to first so far today they think Dave McNally [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Buford's wait that's all you'd have to guess that it got a little help from the web [Applause] chorus tied three-three [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] that is dick Hall up and throwing they call throwing in the bullpen [Applause] two home runs all year leave on successive days in July [Music] his major-league career wise it had only six foot one of those six had been off dave mcnally and it was just base it off McNally Sunday that won the ballgame for the New York Mets McNally strikes out [Applause] [Music] slides a senator and fun it is rayon in the Brooks Robinson side the variance played with two men [Music] [Applause] on strike schematics the bottom half of the seventh inning in the score at 3:00 3:00 [Applause] strike two while the Oreos want to take the series back to Baltimore the Mets of course wanna ended right here today with the Mets his champions of the world that's Harrelson on deck Nancy Seaver [Music] in fact of every way outside it's one and two ag's follow the order my bud Harrelson there's nobody on base is one man up Agee formerly of [Applause] [Applause] laughs he stays alive at 2 & 2 [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] now with nobody on base in one man out it'll be a payoff pitch Tommy McNally who has struck out six and walk to [Applause] we put our a thumbs up for the right side and Frank Robinson drifts over puts it away there is two minutes bud Harrelson is coming up for the messiyah struck out struck out and flied to Center [Applause] and low for a ball its 1 and oh now to Harold Leon Jones right now that goes behind - at all he was pushed into a three run lead and he has seen the Mets come back to get to in the sixth and one in the seventh so it's all even at three runs each - Oh delivery [Applause] Eddie Yost of the scientists sir and he goes who played at Washington for many years before born in Brooklyn and as a master's degree from NYU there's now [Music] one [Music] Eddie Yost the first place boss up until 1962 a few days with the Los Angeles a swing and a Miss fan it's free and - so again McNally has gone full for the number two man in the Mets batting order here's the payoff pitch and his founder Robinson makes the catch of the line drive for the out at third base he was guarding the line the sign is retired one run on one hit no errors and none left at the end of seven full innings of play the score is the Mets three and Baltimore three [Music] their weakest defensive [Music] we pause now for station identification [Music] all right [Music] and our Kurtz motion is up to master McNally's undergrad ball to deep short taken by Harrelson throws to first and colonel [Music] throwing in the bullpen Eddie watt throwing in the bullpen nobody on base McNally is out of the ballgame with that said Harold seven innings in which he gave up three runs on five hits he struck out six and he walked two now it's Don Buford up top of the batting order he's grounded out grounded out and flied out to right on a long-running catch by Ron Swoboda I got away football Paul Blair is on deck for the Oreo story tied three-three the hits are all even at five each flyball to centerfield and Agee Rangers back [Music] he has so many of the mannerisms of Willie Mays that's not by accident they are both from the state of Alabama but strangely enough they never met until Agee came over from the American League to the Mets last year and they played the San Francisco Giants on opening day and it's the first time that Agee ever met me all blares up my defender struck out swinging lined out to centerfield breaking face took a lot off that butt blow out of the strike zone it's ball one Frank Robinson's on deck which is over the press deck right up there that's the side right there get the press deck lower juice below one unwanted account declare its hide doing what Paul Blair was the property of the New York Mets in 1962 in the instructionally he and plea on Jones were roommates to unfit right away so now Koosman goes behind 3 1 to Blair with Frank Robinson on deck you can see Ed Charles they're guarding the line trying to protect against the extra-base hit right here three line delivers and it's deep short [Applause] the Mets 3 and the Orioles 3 this is Lindsay what do you think you want me to stay here go down a what all right you let me know huh right [Music] found a Tony Kubek Thank You Lindsay with me one of our country's great statesman a man who's devoted his life serving our
