Audacity Noise Reduction - Remove Background Noise Audacity - Audacity 2020

ladies and gentlemen welcome back to another audacity tutorial i'm josh meyer of joshmeierville.com i'm a professional voice talent done over 3 000 paid voiceovers i got into that through writing music and i just so happened to be an expert in audacity so today we're going to go over noise reduction so basically as you all know i uh create custom eqs and i do private coaching whether that be for audacity or voiceover period um home studio setup etc so i do consult uh i create custom eqs and one person that hired me recently to build custom eqs for when i get the original recording to build the eq on once i'm done building the eq i will send the original recording back with the custom eq on it along with the steps that i took to make the recording sound the way it sounds now so you know your custom eq compression noise reduction whatever that may be for their case and uh she kindly asked she was thrilled with the eq but she kindly asked can you explain how to apply noise reduction so i started typing it up and then it dawned on me it is going to be far more effective to show you rather than to type out a paragraph five paragraphs however much it would take for me to explain uh this so without further ado we're going to jump into this and it's almost the end of the year i've got a lot more videos coming for you all i'm going to redo a new version of how to use audacity for beginners so if you follow my channel you've probably seen that the feedback is amazing and i'm going to do a new version on that because we have new tools at our disposal um so look out for that i'm building a course on how to create your own eqs um and that is going to be huge so that will be available for sale you know at the end of the year early next year but i'll certainly keep you updated and we've got more videos coming for you uh just keep your eyes peeled i'm not going anywhere but without further ado what i'm going to do right now is i'm going to click record and i'm going to leave two seconds of space before i even start to speak and the reason for that being is because we need to get a sample of just the room noise whether that be your laptop fan in the background your computer fan the ac whatever okay so that's what's going to happen okay this is just a quick random recording to show people how noise reduction works okay so right now i'm going to create a duplicate of this track so we can do a side by side and you can see the effectiveness of this tool so i've got a noise gate on my compressor you're not going to hear a lot and i don't have a lot of background noise in my studio but what i will do is i'm going to crank this gain slider up to the max so that you can hear some of that white ambient noise that i talk about um so we'll listen to this it's nice and quiet isn't it but when i crank this gain up to 36 let's have a listen there you go so what you're hearing right now is likely my computer fan um it's incredibly low when this is back to even you're not going to be able to hear it but this is not the case for everybody um so some people may have background sound like that so how do we get rid of it great question what we do is we highlight just the background noise just the background noise not your computer chair making a sound uh not you speaking literally just the noise so we're going to get a sample so we highlight that go to effect and we will go to noise reduction and we will get the noise profile once we have the noise profile then we can double click to highlight the entire track go back to effect and repeat noise reduction or if you're on windows control r as you all know i'm a very big fan of the hotkeys so we're going to repeat noise reduction now to know for sure if the noise reduction has been applied or not you could go to edit and if it gives you the option to undo the noise reduction then rest assure that it has been done so i will highlight the same area again it is cranked all the way up and here is the bottom one that has no noise reduction on it whatsoever so we're going to do a side by side so this is before noise reduction okay and after noise reduction night and day difference so i'm going to put that back to even because god forbid um you we we catch me talking over here i'm gonna blow you guys away with that sound so um one thing i do want to talk about is the noise reduction settings oops we gotta select a section all right cool noise reduction settings this is what i have in my audacity okay noise reduction db 12 sensitivity 6 frequency smoothing bands 3. leave that the way it is audacity has set the noise reduction perfectly for us if we start playing around with these numbers it can get pretty wonky pretty fast so i don't think you need to mess with that at all it is incredibly effective and if if you have to use two rounds so be it um and that's about it so keep your eyes peeled for the up and coming videos i definitely have a lot of gold coming your
