ok ladies and gentlemen welcome to another audacity tutorial I'm Josh Meyer of Josh Meyer vo comm why should you trust me I'm a professional voice talent I've done over 3,000 voiceovers and I just so happen to be an expert in audacity so today we're talking about plosives what is applause 'iv a plosive is that explosion of air that comes out of your mouth when you say a P word purpose put if you were to put your hand out and say any of those words you feel that explosion of air now why is it important to know how to deal with this because our microphone capsules are so sensitive that that explosion of air will hit the capsule and just blow up in it and it will sound wretched in your recording trust and believe it so the best practice first and foremost before I teach you how to fix this within the DA is a couple tactics and techniques that you can use to lessen the amount of plosives that you have and that will that will help you in your processing so much it will save you so much time in your processing and editing so first and foremost you'll see me speaking just above the microphone capsule so the air blowing and rushing out of my mouth is blowing past the mic capsule but the capsule is here still capturing all of that rich delicious sound so yes making sure the air is blowing past the capsule is awesome if you have a different setup you could use an angle and I'll get this out of my face alright so you could just have your microphone at an angle so it's like just to the side of your mouth but the air is still rushing right past that capsule last but absolutely not least a pop filter is a must I've had microphones that I've stood feet away from and set a P word and it just POW right into the recording a pop filters a must you can have something cheap like this they work just fine you know five to ten bucks to $15 on Amazon it's made of like pantyhose material you could make one at home they work great but not having one should not be an option this right here is a mesh metal blue pop filter I thought it was very cute and I could afford it so I got it but you don't need something fancy like this this does work great but this works as well this is a great great budget-friendly pop filter so using those techniques and a pop filter will be life savers now sometimes a plosive is it's inevitable so without further ado allow me to make a fool of myself while I make these plosives and I'll show you how to fix them Peter Piper and Penelope hope not to perform a plosive now this recording is gonna sound terrible because I was just basically yelling into the microphone to blow past the pop filter make these plosives so first and foremost I'm going to double click that track to highlight the whole thing ctrl D to duplicate that track so we can do a before and after so the top track is the track that we're going to be working on right now so I'm clicking solo so that that is the only track that we hear now when i zoom in on this you're going to find that plosives often look very very similar to another there is a very congruent look that is a blow civ here we go let's zoom over that is elusive you catch on the drift already that is elusive that was my water bottle in the background but yes that's a plosive that is elusive I mean you see what I'm saying so essentially you could identify a pilosa v' without even hearing it blow Civ right there pal but always trust your ears now how do we attack this some people attack that v equalizer however that is very advanced and sometimes you can manipulate audio that you don't mean to manipulate by going into that hurt range pipe so I find the best tactic unless you have an entire audiobook of recording is to attack each plosive individually because they're going to need a different level of of care purposive and how severe it is so your two best friends here are the fade in effect the fade in the fade-out and d amplification so let's zoom back out so we can see the bigger picture again let's start at the beginning I'll zoom back in now what we would do is we would highlight this plosive and just the plosive if you have a big highlighted range and you use the fade in tool that is going to be a very slight fade gradual fade we want a sharp fade that attacks the heck out of this thing so let's go to effect now that that's highlighted we will fade in see that brought that down already Peter but it's still there and I want to bring it down more so ctrl R to repeat that Peter nice that sounding way about it hype huge plosive right here highlight that control R to fade in one more time see you brought that down Piper Piper and I feel like I could bring that down one more time Piper burn that's a huge plosive right there zoom out let's highlight this ctrl R to repeat that fade in again and up and let's do that one more time and now niced peep and [Music] ctrl R P hope all right so this right here at the end clearly we don't want to fade in that would be basically backwards of what we're looking to do here so when the P the plosive is at the end I like to either use fade-out or the D amplification tool when the pilosa vis on the end D amplification works great and I actually prefer that so I start at negative 2 and that brought that down to decibels so you would go to amplify you would drag the slider all the way over until it's in the negatives start at negative 2 I already did it once but I want to bring it down even further and that still looks a bit big to me so ctrl R to repeat ctrl R to repeat because we still want it to sound natural but we don't want it to be huge we don't want it to be huge and obnoxious in the recording ctrl R to repeat lowering that by 2 decibels one more time ok not to perform not that's huge right there so we highlight this and we go to effect fade in brought that way down ctrl R to repeat that one more time took all right and I'd like to do that one more time ctrl R perform movie so I've faded in a few times and that has worked wonders thus far however I want to manipulate this just a hair more so I'm going to D amplify that by negative 2 and it's a combination of these things that often work the best you just have to trust your ear perfect control are hurtful and one more time there's too much air in there that was huge perform a post perform a put huge blow civ all right highlight that effect fade in and are to repeat that and I want to bring that down some more control are again closed now I am going to show you look how different this looks already look at that you see this look at the difference here unbelievable unbelievable so without further like at that unreal okay so let's zoom back out to have a look at the bigger picture we can see that the changes have been made look at that so I'm going to make the recordings louder I'll just run through a quick process what I would do I would highlight room noise I would go to effect I would get the noise profile so I go to noise reduction get the noise profile double click the track ctrl R to repeat that control R to repeat that on this track it's the same exact track I would equalize it and I could do all of this at once by ctrl a the entire thing ctrl a for all I would equalize them both and equalizer and the new audacity is filtered curve by the way boom I would equalize it I would compress it compressor setting is a negative 10 dB at the threshold negative 10 to negative 15 is fantastic if you over compress it will sound boxy robotic crunchy you do not want that you want it to sound natural noise floor negative 40 that's great ratio 2 to 1 perfect attack and release time sliders all the way to the left pow let's apply that now already look at this peak look at that I mean goodness gracious and let's finish that by normalizing it down to either negative 2 or negative 3 dB so a side by side here's the original without the fade in and D amplification let's check it out here I'm gonna cut a chunk of time out of here control X original Peter Piper and Penelope not to perform applo civ we here we go and after we worked on it Peter Piper and Penelope hope not to perform a plosive I mean that is a night and day difference and if I wanted to I could go right back to that pas go to amplify and D amplify that again negative 2 decibels bring that down maybe one more time Pao control R so let's start here at hope here's the original hope not to perform a plosive and here is after we've worked on it hope not to perform a plosive original hope new hope way better original not to perform a plosive and after we've worked on it not to perform a plosive alright you get the idea there fade in fade out fade in and d amplification are fantastic you could use fade out if the P is at the end but fade and D amplify to your taste in ear once again I'm Josh Meyer of Josh Meyer vo comm I'm an expert in audacity if you need to learn more if you have any questions on things that I haven't
