hey folks aj the ceo here and in this video this is going to be an atem mini 101 basics going through all of the most common questions i get with the a2 mini um it's been two years since we've had this and i just want to have a reference to try and answer as many things as possible as well as for a lot of ministries that i've done installs for i want this this to be a reference for them and any future members for their um media ministry so i'll have time stamps down below that you can jump to a specific topic if you want to see we're starting with the a10 mini and we will work our way up to the a10 mini extreme um so that's about it but before we get started please go ahead and hit that like button uh doing it early helps youtube know that this is great and they push this video out to more people so that it can help other ministries or anybody else is using the a10 mini i would really appreciate it make sure you hit that subscribe button if you like what we're doing and hit that bell that way you get notified when we come out with other videos to help modernize your media ministry so enough of me blabbing let's cut over to the overhead camera this is the a2 mini this is the the original the og that comes with this this is and what is the atem anyway i don't know what the name stands for it's not an acronym so i don't know what atem stands for but um that's what this is and what i need you to remember is this is nothing but a humongous capture card all right so just like you would have a capture card that you will plug into your computer for one camera this will allow you to have four inputs coming in now what's the differences between the other atems this a10 mini the base first off if we flip it over as you see we have four inputs two mic inputs one hdmi out a webcam out an ethernet jack and power this is the essential this is the base now what i will let you know is honestly this goes for around 295. most decent graphics card i mean capture cars kind of like the decklink mini recorder is one that i use a lot the 4k version cost 195 dollars but that only allows you to have one input this atom will allow you to connect up to four inputs cameras computers whatever video game consoles dvd players blu-ray players um as long as you turn the encryption off um that's what allow you to connect to this right so that gives you an extra 100 this is honestly i think is a very very good start if any ministry was asking if they wanted to or if anybody was looking for some type of capture device i would honestly recommend they go with the a10 mini because it's just a hundred more dollars and you can have three more inputs all right now another thing is you have two mic inputs right so you can have a wireless mic similar to kind of like this road that i have you can have this connected directly here if you wanted to with a 3.5 millimeter connection and you can have two of these or you can get a um xlr to 3.5 millimeter that's what that is a quarter inch to 3.5 millimeter and you can go directly from like a sound board similar to what i have right here and that will go directly into this so what's the importance of that that means that if you are at a ministry and you have a mixer whether that's an analog or a digital one as long as you come from an aux out a monitor out a quarter inch out you can take the house sound using all of the mics that you already have in your ministry if instruments are plugged in anything and the entire mix that's going out to your speakers in the house will come into your atom which is available for your live stream so instead of you using a microphone like on a camcorder you can actually collect the entire sound just like if you were sitting inside of your sanctuary and that will be sent to your live stream connecting to one of these inputs which is really awesome now you also have a second input so you could do multiple things but we'll explain that they function the same way if you're connecting a microphone similar to this there is a setting that we need to change if you're going into a sound system there is a change that needs to be made but we will talk about that later right now one thing with these inputs these are auto scaling meaning that if you plug in a camera that can support 4k it will scale this down if you plug in anything hdmi that's like 720 or any resolution it will scale it up this is awesome because the original atems did not have this everything need to be set to the exact same resolution for the most part you don't need to worry about this now i still have some issues trying to plug a gopro into this but any other camcorder that you get from like a walmart all the way up to really high end that you can connect over hdmi or convert the signal to hdmi this will do the trick for you alright now with the a2 mini this is the base this is the cheapest one you have an hdmi out all this hdmi out is going to offer is which one of these are you selecting there is no multi-view on this one so for example the multi-view is i'll take a picture of it so you can see it because i can't turn the camera to show you what this looks like but the multi-view similar to what i'm doing right now will give you a look of every single camera that you're that's plugged in i am looking right now what you're seeing is the a10 mini extreme that has eight inputs but it's the exact same thing but this the atem mini the base one does not offer this the only thing that you're ever going to see in this is going to be the program out meaning that if you have camera one selected that's the only thing that's going to be seen if you switch to camera234 that's all you're going to see there is no showing of all four of these inputs at the same time on this model the a2 mini pro fixes that but we'll talk about that later all right let's go back to our other outputs you have a webcam out this is a usbc if you connect this device to your computer your computer is going to see this as a simple webcam which so it is not really taxing the atem is doing all of this functionality so if you're using something like zoom instead of you using just your webcam the atom will allow will let zoom just see a camera but the a10 will allow you to now select between four different cameras so if you happen to have a camera in the back of your sanctuary or if you're on your desk and you're doing a meeting you can have your laptop as another input so you have your camera as one your laptop is a number two and you can mix and match a lot of things with this and it's just gonna show up as a webcam you know and this can be connected to anything mac windows linux it all works right now the usb also allows you to control the atem over your usb at the same time that's really important as well too now here is a rj45 ethernet jack that you can connect to this and connect it to your network just like a printer and your computer can see the atem over the network any computer that's running the software can connect to the atem and control it over the network all right now some of the higher end atems can actually use this network connection and live stream directly from this without a computer that is the a2 mini pro and higher this a10 mini cannot do that all this is is a glorified webcam and capture card that allows you to connect four inputs to it all right this is a good start but just be mindful of the limitations it can't live stream it can't record and you have no multi-view that's what this mini does now one other thing i want you to notice if we look all over this atom here you'll notice there's the power but turn to the side the front the other side the bottom the front there is no on or off button so if i come here and just plug this right in you see it just turns on so for you to turn this off you have to unplug it but there's a couple of people especially a subscriber chris in canada he made this this is a little pass through here that will give you an on and off switch for your atm as you can see should be on but now now you have an on and off switch now he sells these for like 9.99 or if you get a bunch of them they get a discount the more you get i have a link down below if you're interested in these but if you don't get one of these what i like to do is plug all of this into a surge protector and then just turn the surge protector off and it will kill the power to this so just be notice of that so right there we have power let's go ahead and connect a network connection here all right and let's plug in a usb c cable here and i need a camera all right i have my sony 4k camcorder right here i will use that we're going to plug that into hdmi input number one then we have our connection here and make sure we turn our camera on all right so there's our basic setup here so really straightforward just think about it if we had different inputs this is how this would work all right so let's go ahead and cut over to the computer and let's see what this looks like now before we get started we need to go and make sure that you have the latest version of the atem controlling software so that you can actually control your atem and make sure that your computer can detect it if you plugged in and did everything like that and nothing showed up you need to make sure that you install this software this is for linux mac or windows so this is how we do it we're just going to go over to blackmagicdesign.com and make sure we install the software so let's go ahead and cut over to that i'm here at blackmagicdesign.com we're just going to come up here to support scroll down we're going to go to atem live production switchers we're going to click on that and then we're going to look for our latest um we're looking for what version of operating system and system we're using so we got windows i'm on this system and we got that installed all right now once you get that installed you're gonna have a program here called the atem setup software so as you can see there is the atem mini that is showing up right now i'm on a different computer but as you can see from this icon it's showing that i'm picking it up over the network if i go over here because i have two atems my a to mini extreme that i'm using right now to make this video says i'm connected over to network and usb so that's just the change of the icon all right so what we're going to do we're going back to the a10 mini all right so now since i'm on a different system what i'm going to do is show you how this is connected i'm going to take another usb cable and connect it to this system that i'm using so that we can get a little bit more control when it comes to the settings you want to make sure especially with the mini that you want to be connected over usb if you want to make any settings so let's plug that in real quick all right and as you can see we now have a usb connection to this one so let's go ahead and go to this little button here which is a menu and inside of here now we can make different settings for our atom all right so this where we can set an ip address in here we also have our panel settings we have program and preview again um what this is allow you to do is when you pick a button of an input program red is going to be what's live right now green preview is going to show you where you're going to this is important when you have a multi-view but that's really not that important for the atom except for if you had it to cut if i once i pressed one of the buttons on the atem one two and three it's gonna go immediately to that setting compared to as you see right here we have the program and preview set up and it's gonna go from um red and then when i switch it it will cut over instead of it being instant i personally like program and preview so that way when you hit a button it doesn't automatically go there but that's up to you picture in picture here is a setting so like for example if i turn the keyer on right now you see me here in the upper left hand corner um what this means is if i was changing to different cameras shots different inputs one through four with the a2 mini or any atem when i change it's going to drop this picture in picture setting so if you're doing a lot of jumping back and forth you might not want this on and you want to keep it on me personally i always have mine turned off because i'm doing different shots because say i kept it on and i switched back to me that image would still be up there i don't want that so but you know you have to play around with that so that is your choice the next setting we have drop with transition this is your chroma keyer this is something similar if i was using the green screen and you have it set to erase all that stuff when you transition to something else do you want to hold that key a lot of this stuff will make sense once we go further on into this all right those are all the settings except for you can change here you can change the brightness of the colors on the atem if you like you know doesn't harm that it depends on what type of environment you are but those are your main settings you can go to about you can find the software version a manual readme all this other stuff like that so let's go ahead and press this button this is the control software this will allow you to connect to the atem software now don't be concerned when you install that software from blackmagic site it gives you the atem setup as well as the atm control software directly so if i just type in atem here you can see this is a direct link to it but since we're here we're just going to go ahead and press this and this is important because if you have multiple atems like i have on here by pressing this it will allow you to go to the specific atom that you are using so let's go ahead and do that all right we are now inside the atem software and as you can see we have our four camera buttons one two three four all this other nice stuff here so that you can easily control the software outside of the buttons on the console so if i press input number four for preview you see it changes on the software as well so if i was switching back and forth the same thing would happen all right so now let's go ahead and go through our buttons we have obviously our this is our program and this is our preview similar to the settings we talked about red means it's live right now green is what we're getting ready to go to what else we have we have on transition so if we had transition set we can say we can put it on air right now or what we're getting ready to go to we'll talk about these later your preview like i said this is what we're getting ready to go to next and we have different type of transitions and we'll talk about this well too your rate for those transitions our fade to black button our t-bar that we can manually switch in between what we're doing at whatever speed we want to and our dsk which is our downstream keyer all right let's go through the menu at the top we have file we have restore we can restore back settings that we save just consider the software kind of like a word document you can make settings that you can save and you can restore them and bring them back um that's where your save and save as is i have mine set to auto save so once i make any changes here when i shut this down it saves everything you can save a startup state meaning that if you set the atem exactly the way you want say you want to have the mics on mics off whatever stuff like that it will save those settings all right that reminds me i didn't go over all the rest of the buttons let's jump back over here to this camera and let's um go back over that because i didn't explain all the buttons that correlate with the atom all right so my apologies for not explaining this let's go over our buttons here we have our one through four which are our inputs we also have a cut button and my light is affecting the text so you can't see it let me turn this off so you can see it we have our one through four we have our steel button we have our fade to black button we have our cut so that we can cut between different inputs whichever one we pick we have our auto which fades in between which one we have we have our fade to black button right here this is just black just puts up a solid color this is fade to black it fades to nothing but black now for each one of these inputs here here is our on and off for if we had inputs plugged in for our audio we can turn these on or off volume up volume down volume up volume down or input number two now one thing also to know that's missing with the a2 mini there is no headphone jack so you cannot monitor the sound directly from this you would need to have go monitor it through a computer or have something else another hookup to hear this but for the a10 mini and the a2 mini pro there is no headphone jack so you can't hear anything that's going on with how this stuff is coming in directly to the device all right now you also have uh your picture and picture buttons right here you can turn it on and off and then you have preset positions of where they go in the upper left hand corner lower corner lower right upper right you know and then on and off you also have your dsk button that's on and off right here there is no fade it's just an on and off um you have your duration so say normally by default when you fade in between these you is is done in one second you can change this time preset to a half a second one second 1.5 seconds two seconds in the software you can make that longer times i don't think you can go anything shorter than half a second but the software gives you more control all of these buttons are pre-programmed you cannot change the settings of these buttons at all if you if you make a change in the software that does one thing but once you press a button on here it will read from the defaults from the device itself please remember that and you also have effects of how this stuff fades you can do a push you can do a pull you can um go up to the side down you could mix dip dip as it goes into a specific color before it fades out to the other shot that you got and that's it all right let's connect back to the software because i did i shut this off let's turn it back on all right and there we are so let's go through the software again we went through file if you really want to go back to your connection that software we can go to connection and then here's our software and we can go to our setup atem setup software here if we wanted to or we can pick different um switchers on our network atom switchers as you can see i have two you can go by name by picking them or your ip address if you set it but we're not going to do that you also have preferences here preferences is where you can make those changes again that are in the atem setup software this is where you can do direct but we're going to keep it on program and preview you can change the language here if you wanted to you can enable midi control i don't think that really matters on the mini but whatever you do have mappings as well here too and it looks like they actually made some changes here they didn't originally have this okay you only have four inputs so it's not like you can really set this to any extra buttons here i mean you could but i don't know what the reason would be um but you know it's your choice you can if you were using um type of blackmagic cameras you could change the input there which is new i didn't notice that but cool all right we're okay out of that let's go to macros we'll talk about that later output now remember when we talked about the atem output date to mini output you're either gonna you can only show one thing so we can say here and just use whatever is plugged into camera number one that's the only thing that's ever going to come out all right or we can lock it to number two number three number four or program that's typically what you would use meaning that if i make some changes in between this and go from camera one to camera two to camera tree to camera four um to whatever that is what's gonna come out of the hdmi out all right so let me get a extra cable and i'm gonna hook it up so we can see what that all looks like alrighty so we have our atom connected for my input on my other atem so let's show you what the output would be and we can explain that those buttons that i was talking about so if we cut over now you can see this is the the camera the camcorder just connected to the atem all right so we cut over here you can see that is what that is that's what that other hdmi cable is right there that is going into the atem and that is what you're seeing you're seeing my lego iron man hat over i mean statue there and all the other stuff here all right so if i was to switch this as you can see the background that i have right now is the camera that is from the atom and i have both of these windows showing up right now so number one is our atom all right and let's go ahead and bring up obs real quick and then we can see what everything looks like here at the same time as well too all right so as you can see that's what's showing up in obs all right now if i switch this to input number four as you see obs went blank because there's nothing on this input but the background that you're seeing is still camera number one that is the importance of locking to one of these now aj okay that's all great and dandy but what does that mean so if you're using this for a ministry think about this you can have the hdmi out locked to presentation software that has your church logo the scripture the hymns or whatever in full screen plugged into input number two and say the hdmi out from your a10 mini is locked to number two so that means everyone inside your sanctuary on your tvs and projectors are always and will only see the presentation software but everybody else that say you're live streaming to will see whatever you pick on your atem so they can see the cameras they can see any of the four inputs that's in your atm or any inputs that you have in your atm at all you can have your in-house people see one thing but everybody else online that you're live streaming with can see something completely different i hope you can see the power of that so you can use one of these to be a switcher but in the sanctuary again i'm repeating this for a reason everybody in your sanctuary is only going to see whatever input that you have and again i will say presentation software that's the only thing that's going to the projectors but you can have three other cameras hooked up to this and switch between all the rest of them and then the only time everybody in the sanctuary is only ever going to see your presentation software but people online will see all four inputs depending on when you select them right that gives you the power to say hey people in the same show i don't want to see myself on camera oh it's a small sanctuary we don't need to have projecting of whoever's preaching on the pulpit or the choirs your natural eyes can see that so that's why in house they don't need to see that you can lock it to one of those inputs but everybody else online that you're live streaming to or zoom or whatever that you're using your atem for they may want to be able to see everything and that gives you the power to change either one i hope you understand that and we'll talk about that later so you can pick any of these inputs here in the software to do that i'ma switch it back to program now actually before i do that you could also have this as a preview remember i said that the a2 mini does not offer a multi-view so that you can see everything but you can lock it to where hey you have a monitor set up for you and you can see what's getting ready to happen you know that's up to you you could do something like that as well too just understand the power of that all right we're going to come back to all of these other items here let's go down to the bottom you have four sections here with your atm you have your switcher you have your media media will allow you to upload up to 20 still images directly to your atem so for example i can come in here and drag this image here and now that's going to act as a different input so if i cut back over here to my atom i mean over to obs to seeing the output from the atom so you see that right there that is the camera let's cut back over our software again from here you see i can now use mp1 which is the media player which is this media player that's what that is i can pick this and now when i switch over to this now it's looking at the still image so you gotta think you can put a church logo anything like that as a still image if you want to for your transitions i mean um for for displaying all right now be reminded this is still images only you can't play videos or anything like this this is a static image only a png a bmp i believe and a jpeg something like that all right you can always navigate from here you saw me just drag stuff over here like this um something like that or the idea is you can go through here and navigate and find it here in your files and drag them over it's your choice all right now you can also say let's go back over here to our regular camera that we have selected i can come back over here and hit capture still image and it's going to capture an image of whatever is live right now so i like this because say you need to make a thumbnail or whatever for your ministry you can while it's live streaming you can just hit this capture and boom you have a qui high quality image that came over your live stream all right and it's saved you can come out here save it and pull it away and stuff like that if you want to um you know it captures it right there on the screen i don't know of a way that you can actually save this um somewhere but i don't know it may save somewhere i'm not aware of a place where it says but that does give you an option all right now let's go to audio every hdmi in offers you a way to capture audio say you have a computer plugged into it your computer can send audio and video over the hdmi cable depending as long as your computer supports it but if you want to hear audio you can so like right now you see that the mic is picking up me talking from the camcorder but it's gray that means no one is hearing the output because it's off i can click on on and now you see it's going out and if i cut over here to obs as you can see now audio is being picked up if i turn this off see now no audio is coming in at all that is all because of me turning this on and off all right i'ma turn it back on now audio is coming through the system now this is important if you have your mic or anything like right now so i have my rode wireless hooked up to this and i have it plugged into input number one alright so right now as you can see you see my audio is right here so if i turn that on now you hear my audio coming from the rode wireless now it's really low so we need to crank that up now with that being said let's go ahead and jump to this other gear that i didn't talk about here let's go to the gear here now this is going to give us some more settings for our atem all right first your atem can only do 1080p it has different frame rates so you can pick mine is at 1080p 60 you can do 59.94 or whatever you can set it to auto that works well but for me i specifically set mine to something else you know specifically you know that's up to you but be mindful of that now with the a10 mini none of these other settings are important because they don't support them now let's go to audio the importance of this is for every input that's coming into the atem you can split the audio to left and right channels if you don't know what that means don't worry about it but for the people who do this is really important so some of these like these road wireless or the lark mic systems that i have and stuff like that you can split the channels to say when the audio is coming in the left to speaker number one the right is speaker number two you can do something like that and split the audio and see what this means is now the left and right channel will act as two separate people and you can adjust the channels for the given person that's what that means but i normally don't use that but that just lets you know if you need to the main thing we need to do is go to general right here now there's a few settings inside of this so right right now my audio levels was really low because this was still set for a mixer if you're bringing in audio from a mixer you need to have your mic input set to line because if you have it set as a mic is the mixer is an amplifier and it's going to send the levels um you know it's going to adjust the levels for itself you don't need to adjust them in the atom for the most part so if you had it in microphone it's going to be way too loud so for example let's say well you're already seeing it right now with a line in that's what this mic is set to right now and i'm cranked all the way up but you can barely see anything because it's expecting a mixer to send the volumes higher now let me switch this back to microphone now now you can see i'm way too loud because it's the atem is handling that all right so be mindful if you're hooking this up to a mixer always change for whatever line in that you're using change it to line not microphone so if you're using the atem and you have a mixer and the sound sounds distorted make sure especially if you're coming from a mixer that your input is changed to line that is only for the mic 1 and mic 2 jacks all right so i'm going to leave this here um they added plug-in power um i don't i don't need that for right now so i'm just going to leave it here all right now what's next we have labels labels you can change these cameras so you can actually have a name um this is really important when you're actually doing if you had a multi-view which this doesn't show but say you want to see you can change these labels here so that it will affect the button names that are showing up here the shorthands at least so you can come in here and say instead of camera one i want this to be um sony and i'll say sony here and i save it see it change the name here so if you want to do that you can do that but i'm gonna reset the labels back right output i mean there's really no need to change this because with the a to mini you can't i mean it's not really important but you could make this change on the higher ones if you wanted to and you'll see that change on the multi-view none of these are going to show for the a2 mini then you also have media pool you only have one i mean you can change the name if you want to but again you're not going to notice it it's just going to show you in the software all right next thing we have is hyperdeck hyperdeck is a another kind of digital recorded device that blackmagic has that you this device can connect to it over the network and send the command to start recording if you want to as well as having it come in meaning that if like this is a recorder that you can play it has stuff saved on a hard drive you can have this connect to the ip address and say oh it's connected to input number four and then you connect to it and boom you can do stuff like that and the importance of that i have this at my church that if you come over here to media player if you had one connected you can it will show controls here and you can engage a recording remotely through the software if you did have that so really cool all right now and the last thing we have is remote but again that is not a feature on the atem mini all right we've gone through a lot let's go over to camera camera is really cool but it's really only beneficial for black magic cameras if you have a black magic camera like i'm using an atem i mean um a pocket cinema camera 4k and i have a studio camera behind me those connected to the atom will allow me to actually make color corrections and focus and auto zoom directly inside of the camera from the software so that's really really powerful so like say for example i'ma come over here and i'm going to show you what that looks like so right now i'm in focus but i can come in here and i'm going to make this out of focus here for a second so i'm out of focus but see inside the software here i'm gonna hit this auto focus button here and i'm not adjusting the camera so if i hit autofocus see it brought me into focus and that was controlled in the software but that's only because it's talking directly to black magic cameras over hdmi the same thing works with the studio camera so that's a cool function if you had black magic cameras connected to your atom and that's it so we got a bunch of other functions that we'll go through so like output that's not a function here because there's no output here there's another button for you to capture a still image if you wanted to and there's a time generator that shows you the current time so you can see right now it is uh you know 10 24 when i'm recording this um in the evening all right or night or night evening all right and that's mainly it for a high level overview so we're going gonna be coming back with a part two to this and we're gonna start delving more into the settings and everything like that in getting the most out of your atm but you know what i didn't show let's go back over to obs real quick and we'll show you what this looks like because again we're connected over usb here all right so as you can see i am here in obs it is pulling from the atom that we have the a10 mini that is connected and let me show you it just shows up as a webcam in the list you see i just have blackmagic design and that's what shows up i just picked that and then i scroll down to the bottom and i say i want to use custom audio that is coming from the black magic and boom that's how we hear everything we got here now it works just as easily if i close this and i open up zoom zoom will see the exact same thing if i come over here to settings and i go to video i pick black magic boom there's my camera i pick audio i want my audio my microphone to come from the black magic so that's now going to be driven from the atem this will give you more power to show more things if you're in some type of zoom setting we've had other ministries that still just use zoom for their congregation and now the atom will allow them to show scripture lyrics multiple camera angles and everything directly through zoom so it gives a much higher quality image so any software device will show so if i come in here into windows and i want to use the camera app i can cycle through my different cameras and all right so i have a bunch of cameras here so it just cycles through and it will any device because it just shows up like it's a webcam that's it really cool really straightforward really really easy all right so like i'm saying this is the primer the very beginning hopefully you got a lot of this out of this i have ten times time tams thing time stamps down
