christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you always [Music] good morning and welcome to the house of the lord and as today we begin our spiritual journey by sprinkling the ashes on our heads reminding us that dust you are and to just you will return this is what we are and we are reminded that recognize yourself as just humility forgiveness pardon this is what we will be reflecting together these 40 days and 40 nights given to us to spend more time with the lord in solitude in prayer fasting and armed giving so my dear sisters and brothers as we begin our eucharistic celebration we thank god for the beautiful gathering here and at the same time we also recall to mind our shortcomings and our failures lord you came to seek the contrite of heart lord have mercy christ you are the way to the father christ have mercy lord you are the friend of sinners lord have mercy [Music] may the mighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting [Music] let us pray grant to law that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-esteem self-restraint we ask you this through lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit one god forever and ever peace be seated the first reading a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning rend your hearts and not your clothing return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding and steadfast love and relents from punishing who knows whether the lord will not turn and relent and leaving a blessing behind him [Music] a grain offering and a drink offering to be presented to the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion sanctify a fast call the solemn assembly gather the people sanctify the congregation assemble the agent gather the children even infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her canopy between the festival vestibule and the altar let the priests and the ministers of the lord weep let them say spare your people o lord and do not make your heritage a mockery a byword among the nations why should it be said among the peoples where is their god then the lord became jealous for his land and had pity on his people this is the word of the lord the responsorial psalm have mercy o lord for we have sinned have mercy on us have mercy on me o lord god according to your said vast love according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions wash me thoroughly for my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin have mercy o lord pray of sin for i know my transgressions and my sins is ever before me again you and you alone have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight have mercy o lord for i have sinned create in me a cream a clean heart o god and put a new and right spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence and do not take your holy spirit from me have mercy o lord for we have sinned restore to me the joy of your salvation and sustain me a willing spirit o lord open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise have mercy o lord for i we have sinned the second reading a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ since god is making his appeal through us we entreat you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake god made christ to be sin who knew no sin so that in christ we might become the righteousness of god as we work together with him we urge you also not to accept the grace of god in vain for the lord says at an acceptable time i have listened to you and on the day of salvation i have helped you see now is the acceptable time see now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thank you paper [Music] oh [Music] word of god lord jesus christ lord jesus christ oh glory to you word of god lord jesus christ lord jesus christ [Music] but listen to the voice of the lord glory to you oh word of god lord jesus christ lord jesus christ the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples beware of the practicing your piety before people in order to be seen by them for then you have no reward from your father in heaven so whenever you give arms do not sound the trumpet before you so the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be praised by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you give arms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your arms may be done in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you pray do not like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners so that they may be seen by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you pray go into your room and shut the door pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you fast do not look dismal like the hypocrites for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your father who is in secret and your father who says in sacred will reward you the gospel of the lord jesus christ we have our dear friend the prophet joel he appears right at the beginning of our lenten season every year he comes to introduce to us the the spiritual journey that we are as the children of god going to take together joy is asking us come back to me with all your heart this is an invitation from the lord and then he is extending that invitation to us come back to me with all your heart don't let fear keep us apart trees do bend though straight and tall so must we to others call yes come back to me homecoming this is homecoming we are coming back home because sometimes humanly speaking you know we go astray we leave the house we leave the father's house and follow our own desire agenda or selfish motives and this is not the right time joel is asking us come back to me come back to the father and father be sure of the presence of the father he is there he is there to forgive you my dear sisters and brothers homecoming is something that we all like we love homecoming you know matthew fox a very famous spiritual writer in his book compassion he says and this is something beautiful i always carry the thing in my heart he says it is we who leave the house father is always at home the prodigal son the prodigal son he leaves the father and everything and when he comes back the father is waiting there sitting at the doorstep waiting for his son to come back and embrace him celebration reunion and that is what we find also in the first reading of today joel the prophet is telling us when we are reunited with the lord when our sins are forgiven when you're pardoned of course then there is a celebration the first reading says blow the trumpet sound the trumpet be happy be joyful because your sins are forgiven and then again saint paul says this is the day of salvation the day of salvation for us it is not tomorrow it is today you know business is very important for the lord isn't us lord is in isness is not will or will be so in this regard my dear sisters and brothers the second reading of today paul is also reaffirming our what you call this being saved by the lord this is our acceptable time this is the day of salvation this is a acceptable time it will be the day of the lord yes this is the day of the lord and then moving on to the gospel of today jesus was telling to his disciples he is telling them look at the word be real he is warning his disciples be where be careful be smart if your piety is only for the show of if you are being pious if you are being righteous because you want to show your piety or righteousness to other people no reward it has no reward what your what your right hand is giving let not your left hand so piety you know the word piety we you know the different popes even they have written different articles or the encyclicals on the popular piety we have popular piety and these popular priorities also help us to deepen our relationship with the lord and beautifully these most of these popular party they come from the ordinary sinful people this is their spirituality and today while jesus is telling his disciples let not your piety be a kind of show off he is reminding them be the people of spirituality rather than religiosity because sometimes you know honestly speaking sometimes i can be religious but does that mean that i am also spiritual my spirituality and my religiosity must go together they must meet together they must have some common ground in order to be a radical disciple of christ so jesus today once again is telling his disciples don't be like the hypocrites the actors they are the actors they do things which they don't even believe in so don't be like the hypocrites your piety must be grounded to your own spirituality and which is also linked with the father and then again you know he says here jesus is saying when you fast or when you pray once again no show off but your sisters and brothers these ashes we will be marked with these ashes today and as i said that these ashes are also a symbol of repentance forgiveness coming back home by putting these ashes on our heads we will say lordy lord i am sorry i have left you i went away from you but now i come on to come back home and jesus says when you pray go into your room you know thomas merton a very famous another spiritual writer thomas merton in his book lord's prayer he writes he says when jesus says go to your room and pray the best room that we can find in the world is my heart go up into your room and pray go get into your heart and pray and enjoy the saying rend your heart not your clothes rend your hearts because it is difficult to rend hearts it is very difficult to come close to the heart it is very difficult to pray in the heart and jesus is asking his disciples and even today to us that hearts that matters not what you call this the artificial way of living last two things i would like to share with you and that is you know the first reading the word used was practice practice your piety or practice your life and in the gospel it is used discipline so practice and discipline are required by a disciple of christ and during this lenten season we are asked to practice or rather to put into some spiritual discipline so that we can observe three things prayer arms giving and fasting thank god for this beautiful period of time 40 days 40 nights given to us so that we can deepen our relationship with the lord but at the same time with one another amen we now offer our intercessions to god our father i'd like to pray today in a very special way for our brothers and sisters in ukraine and even the people of russia that may god bless them to bring these two nations together in peace and harmony to live together in freedom we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we continue praying for ourselves that we may be the ambassadors of christ bringing peace joy and happiness to the world around us we pray to the lord i continue praying for people who are sick wherever they are that may the healing hand of god come upon them bringing speedy recovery we pray to the lord lord hear us if anyone if you would like to add you're most welcome to do so we pray for the souls in purgatory and for children who die through abortion for these we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer most gracious loving father we thank you for this time given to us to deepen our relationship with you we thank you father for this gathering and father here we are with our prayers said and unsaid we humbly ask you to hear all these prayers through christ our lord please be seated i'm going to bless these ashes now oh yeah thank you dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with abundance of his grace these ashes which we'll put on our heads in pelitons a god who are moved by the acts of humility and respond with the forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances that they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son god who desire not to death of sinners but there on this conversion mercifully hear our prayers and in your kindness to bless these ashes which we intend to receive upon heads that we may acknowledge that we are but ashes and we shall return to the dust we are thousands of stratfor observances of land gain pardon for sins and newness of life after the likeness of your risen son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen amen thank you [Music] you go there [Music] your church must journey lord baptized in grace renewed by your most holy word through fasting prayer and charity the time he was betrayed he entered willingly into his passion he took bread giving thanks he broke it gave it his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was andrew took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for all so that since you may be forgiven do this in memory of me the mystery of our fear we proclaim your death
