good morning welcome to the celebration of the mass we would like to extend a warm welcome to our guests and visitors as a reminder if you have not if you are not catholic or have not received first communion we invite you forward to receive a blessing please indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest today ashes are blessed and placed on our foreheads they are reminders of our sinfulness before god these ashes were once used on palm sunday so they are also ashes of hope we take them to remind us that we are part of the creation of god we are made by god as the earth as is the earth and the dust for life in taking the ashes we are all equal men and women young and old teacher and student we are all equal in the sight of god we all take the same ashes these ashes have no value except in the sight of god they are nothing but dust we are nothing without god in god we live and move and have our being please join in singing our opening song ashes number 117 in your music issue number 117 we rise again from ashes from the good we fail to do we rise again from ashes to create ourselves anew if all our world is ashes then must all love [Music] we offer you attempts the gifts not fully given the dreams not fully drowned give our stumblings direction give our visions of ashes and [Music] to offerings then rise again from ashes let healing come to pain though spring has turned to winter and sunshine turn to rain the rain we'll use for growing and create the world undo an offering to you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you good morning everyone thank you and happy lent you know it is happy lent because even though the passion death and resurrection of jesus obviously was a very sad event but it also brings about joy in knowing that through the cross of christ we are saved from our sins and we are given new life today we will receive ashes on our forehead reminding us that we are always to think of the cross of christ let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever let's be seated for our first reading a reading from the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning render hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he so to anger rich and kindness relenting and punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the jump blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride in her chamber between the porch and altar let the priests the minister the ministers of the lord weed and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the people where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god our response is be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god and your goodness and the greatness of your in your greatness of in your of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me be merciful o lord for we have sinned for i acknowledge my offense my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight be merciful o lord for we have sinned a clean heart create for me o god and a steady fast spirit renew within me cast me not out from your presence and you and your holy spirit take not from me be merciful o lord for we have sinned give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustained in me o lord open my lips and mouth shall proclaim your praise be merciful o lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who do not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appease we appeal you to the most we appeal you to we appeal you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is a day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god please stand if today you hear his voice pardon not your hearts the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform religious deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that you so that your almsgiving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord obviously we begin lent today ash wednesday this is a time it is called a penitential season penitential is a longer word that says means penance that we are sorry for our sins we're sorry for our sins every day hopefully but especially during lent where we call to mind our human imperfections that we're not perfect people i'm not either we all have to stand before god and say yes i'm sorry and thank you for forgiveness for your divine mercy for allowing me to be instruments of your peace to be given the gift of life and the gift of faith the gift of life is certainly sacred and holy saint paul in the second letter to the corinthians reminds us that we are ambassadors for christ that we represent christ and so we should think each and every day about how we represent jesus do we do a good job representing jesus in school at home on the playground wherever we find ourselves are we good ambassadors which means that we set a good example for others to love others the way to treat others the way we want to be treated to love others the way that we want to be loved and so each and every day we should remind ourselves that wherever we are wherever we go we should be setting a good example especially for our young those who are younger than us because they look up to you especially eighth graders the younger students especially look up to you they want to be where you are someday you may be anxious to move on to high school and rightfully so but at the same time you are the leaders of the school you are the ambassadors for christ especially for our students our very young students in particular so as we gather here today let's remind ourselves that we should be ambassadors for christ now today as i said is wednesday right and what do we call today anybody go ahead say it all ash we got that out that's good so it's important that we remind ourselves that this is lent why do we have lent does anyone have an idea yeah exactly perfect answer whoever the religion teacher is there good job so when you think about it jesus was in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights and he was tempted by the devil remember this story at all some of you okay good good so jesus did not give in to the devil sometimes we do but jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and he said it was very hungry now can you imagine going 40 days and 40 nights without eating i can't imagine i'd never make it but it's important for us to realize the 40 days and the 40 nights in the desert were for us to set us an example of how we can overcome the force of evil in the devil satan in our lives by saying no to evil yes too good and so that means that we tell the truth that means we're honest that means we treat others the way we want to be treated and all that and so lent is an opportunity for us to give up something it's an opportunity for us to do something extra kind such as if there's someone that we don't care for so much is there someone that we don't like so much is there someone that really bugs us at home let's try to be more kind let's try to be more loving and caring and then how many people might be giving up something for lent anybody yeah yeah does anyone know why we do that why do we give up something do you know a tradition it is a tradition a long tradition yes very good another good job for the religion teacher so that we can get closer to god now soon after this homily we're going to bless the ashes on this table excuse me in front of the altar and we will form a procession like you go to communion we're going to have two processions today just like you go to communion the same way the first procession will be in for the ashes you'll return to your seats and then we'll continue with the mass so ashes god has given us the gift of life and the gift of faith he kind of took the dust of the earth as it says in the book of genesis and he blew life you know into the ashes and adam and eve and then from then on it's been human humankind like we're here today members of families we're being you know all of us have been born all of us have been given the gift of new life all of us been given the gift of faith okay so it's important for us to receive these ashes on our forehead but it reminds us to think about the cross of christ have you ever thought let me see um during the gospel before the gospel break you know we sign ourselves on the forehead and the lips and the heart right because they won't know why we do that oh hand went up pretty quick yes excellent so it means that we think so we sign we sign the cross on our forehead because we're thinking about the words of the gospel the words the word gospel means good news the words of jesus we think about what jesus tells us that we make the sign of the cross on our lips which reminds us that we are to say good words not bad words and then on the heart reminds us that we are to be loving people so today we will receive the ashes on our forehead last year during coven we had to sprinkle them on your head which works too but today the church says that we can put them on the forehead so it means that we think you know we have a brain god has given us a brain you are very talented students right you work hard you study hard your teachers work hard to make you learn to help you learn things how to live life how to be good people how to have knowledge okay not only so that you can make a living but that you can do good for other people okay so when we receive ashes on the forehead today we want to think about the cross of christ and the love that he has for us the final word is not the death on the cross the final word is the resurrection and new life but back to the person who answered the first question the reason we have lent is so that on easter sunday we can we can reaffirm we can profess our baptismal promises as older people to remind ourselves of who we are as christians as people of christ so we're preparing to fasting prayer which means that we collect things for the poor and things like that it means that we can on easter sunday go to church and say yes these gifts of prayer facts and almsgiving to ready our hearts for the coming of the risen christ the teachers who are helping me with the ashes if you'd come up here please dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitence o god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observances they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord amen you are dustin unto dust you shall return that you are dust under dust you shall return remember that you are dust unto dust you shall return hey servers remember that you are dust under dust you shall return remember that you
