unfailing care that relying solely on the hope of of heavenly grace they may be defended always by your protection through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah in the year king uzziah died i saw the lord seated on a high and lofty throne with the train of his garment filling the temple seraphim were stationed above they cried one to the other holy holy holy is the lord of host all the earth is filled with his glory at the sound of that cry the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke then i said woe is me i am doomed for i am a man of unclean lips living among a people of unclean lips yet my eyes have seen the king the lord of hosts then one of the seraphim flew to me holding an ember that he had taken with tongs from the altar he touched my mouth with it and said see now that this has touched your lips your wickedness is removed your sin is purged then i heard the voice of the lord saying whom shall i send who will go for us here i am i said send me the word of the lord responsorial psalm in the light of the angels i will sing your praises of lord angels are sing your praises of the lord i will give thanks to you o lord with all my heart that you have heard the words of my mouth and the presence of the angels i will sing your praise i will worship at your holy temple and give thanks to your name in the sight of the angels i will sing your praises lord because of your kindness and your truth for you have made great of all things your name and your promise when i called you answered me you built up strength within me in the sight of the angels i will sing your praises lord all near earth shall be thanks to you when they hear the words of your mouth and they shall sing of the ways of the lord great is the glory of the lord in the sight of the angels i will sing your praises lord your right hand saves me the lord will complete what he has done for me your kindness o lord endures forever forsake not the work of your hands in the sight of the angels i will sing your praises lord a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians i am reminding you brothers and sisters of the gospel i preach to you which you indeed received and in which you also stand through it you are also being saved if you hold fast to the word i preach to you unless you believed in vain for i handed on to you as of first importance what i also received that christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures that he was buried that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures that he appeared to cephas then to the twelve after that he appeared to more than 500 brothers at once most of whom are still living though some have fallen asleep after that he appeared to james then to all the apostles last of all as to one born abnormally he appeared to me for i am the least of the apostles not fit to be called an apostle because i persecuted the church of god but by the grace of god i am what i am and his grace to me has not been ineffective indeed i have toiled harder than all of them not i however but the grace of god that is with me therefore whether it be i or they so we preach and so you believed the word of the lord hallelujah alleluia come after me and i will make you fishers of men the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke while the crowd was pressing in on jesus and listening to the word of god he was standing by the lake of jenezaret he saw two boats there alongside the lake the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets getting into one of the boats the one belonging to simon he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat after he had finished speaking he said to simon put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch simon said in reply master we've worked hard all night and have caught nothing but at your command i will lower the nets when they had done this they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them they came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking when simon peter saw this he fell at the knees of jesus and said depart from me lord for i am a sinful man for astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him and likewise james and john the sons of zebedee who were partners of simon jesus said to simon do not be afraid from now on you will be catching men when they brought their boats to the shore they left everything and followed him the gospel of the lord now there will be a test at the end of this these are the latin words that jesus told the apostles in the gospel today they mean put out into the deep put out into the deep these are also favorite words of pope john paul ii at the end of the jubilee year 2000 the pope wrote a document that had the english title at the beginning of the new millennium the opening words of the document were duke in altum as jesus had told the apostles to cast their nets into the deep the pope set forth a kind of mission statement for what he hoped the church would do in the time that we were about to begin at that time a new millennium he quoted the words of jesus do not be afraid from now on you will be catching men this is the same thing that pope francis says that he thinks the church should do he puts it this way to go out to the peripheries to the edge that's where the church should be found the intent of both popes john paul ii as well as francis is that the church should not remain locked in on itself but rather as jesus said do not be afraid to reach out to reach out especially to those who for some reason may feel alienated on the edge or those who have not yet heard the good news that jesus came to bring from now on you will be catching men jesus told the apostles it is to these the alienated those on the edge that jesus came to bring the gospel the good news of salvation but today my friends he says the same thing to us jesus is telling us today duke in alton put out into the deep do not be afraid to reach out this mission is given to all believers to all those who seek to follow the lord all the baptized are given this same vocation to reach out to give witness by the conduct of our lives at the time that jesus spoke these words to the apostles they were all there was there was no church as we know it today the apostles along with the blessed mother mary were it they were the first disciples but today we all are privileged to be jesus disciples in the world not just with those with an official calling but every person who has been cleansed in baptism is a disciple of the lord the second vatican council emphasized this that the whole church all the baptized all the people of god are able to participate in the mission of the church we certainly see that in the various liturgical ministries that are carried out every sunday at mass electors canters servers communion ministers ushers etc but the privilege of participation in the mass is not limited to those up here vatican 2 says that all the members of the congregation are to be active participants in the celebration of the liturgy called to full conscious and active participation in the mass for me that was perhaps the most difficult aspect of the pandemic lockdown when it was not possible for us to share the celebration of sunday mass with a congregation that's not the way it's supposed to be we're supposed to be able to celebrate with and for the faithful but sunday's not all there is my friends we're to reach out to put out into the deep every day by the witness we give in our daily lives by the care and concern we show for the poor and the vulnerable the lonely and the outcast do we treat each other respectfully even when we might disagree with the other person unfortunately i think we've seen in recent history too much lack of respect for others however having said that if there was anything positive about the snow and ice storm this week it was that we saw people out helping others helping their neighbor clear the snow help them out of drifts etc this is putting out into the deep you never know what you're going to find it is no drifter but the thing is who knows what can come from such kindness this is putting out into the deep showing care and concern for others such activity such activity is the mission of the church because it is the mission that jesus has given to us in all that we do we are invited as pope john paul ii said to put out into the deep to trust to follow and to risk everything for jesus as the apostles did in the gospel and as saint paul did in the second letter today in fact paul even boasted a little bit and said he works harder than all the rest that he's still a saint and then pope john paul concluded duke and alton he said these words invite us to remember the past with gratitude to live the present with enthusiasm and to look forward to the future with confidence with god's help may it be so let us now profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god of the father before all ages for god consubstantial with the father for him all things were made blessed amen for our salvation and god from heaven by the holy spirit was incarnate of the and became man our i said he was crucified under pontius pilate he was buried rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father you will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord give your life who proceeds from the father and his son who with the father and his sons adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic church i think that's one baptism for the forgiveness of sins i look forward to the resurrection of the dead by the world to come trust in the lord our god will hear our prayers let us offer our petitions for prophets and teachers in the church that their call be heard and put into action let us pray to the lord for government leaders that their efforts end human trafficking throughout the world let us pray to the lord for the sick and the suffering that healing may come through the intercession of our lady of lords let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer over all who gather at this table that they work together for the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands that will become our spiritual drink our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you we live and move and have our be and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of life eternal for having received the first fruits of the spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in the paschal mystery so with all the angels we praise you as a joyful celebration we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is she you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise or through your son our lord jesus christ and by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries from the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary the mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and charles our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion and merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom especially all the faithful departed from christ the king there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by his divine teaching we dare to say our father the words of heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is [Music] give us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us into temptation deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days and by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ you said your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you pray so to live that made one in christ we may joyfully bear fruit for the salvation of the world through christ our lord as was announced at the beginning today is or this past week thursday was the feast of saint blaze and as we know the that is the day for the traditional blessing of throats uh but uh for the todd and this is an option that we're given that the priest has given to give the blessing communally so uh instead of everybody coming forward to receive an individual blessing and getting this one person say getting whacked with the candles on your throat i'll just give it to everybody here now and this will be the the blessing for the end of mass then we'll leave in the normal fashion the lord be with you the intercession of saint blais bishop and martyr may god deliver you from every disease at the throat and from every other illness in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit go in the peace of christ oh you
