celebration let's open our hearts let's pray for one another let's make changes necessary for us to be true followers and disciples of the lord when we open our hearts in faith good and wonderful things can happen let us pray grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up the battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint to our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen please be seated a reading from the prophet joel yet even now declares the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning and rent your hearts and not your garments return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and he relents over disaster who knows whether he will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him a grain offering and a drink offering for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion consecrate a fast call a solemn assembly gather the people consecrate the congregation assemble the elders gather the children even nursing infants let the bridegroom leave his room and bride her chamber between the festival and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare your people o lord and make not your heritage a reproach a byword among the nations why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord became jealous for his land and had pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god have mercy on us oh lord for we have seen have mercy on us o lord for we have saved have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion blood and cleanse me from my have mercy on us o lord for we from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brethren we are ambassadors for christ god making his appeal through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin so that in him we might become the righteousness of god working together with him then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in way for he says in a favorable time i listen to you in a day of salvation i have helped you behold now is the favorable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] glory entrance to you lord jesus christ [Music] a pure heart create for me o god and give me again the joy of your and help to you lord jesus christ the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice by doing this you will lose all reward from your father in heaven so when you give arms do not have it trumpeted before you this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win man's admiration i tell you solemnly they've had their reward but when you give arms your left hand must not know what your right is doing your arms giving must be in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not imitate the hypocrites they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you pray go to your private room and when you shut your door pray to your father who is in that secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you when you fast do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do they pull long faces to let men know they are fasting i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that no one will know you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ dear friends brothers and sisters in christ today we begin a spiritual journey a 40-day journey in preparation for the great celebration of the paschal mystery of the passion death and resurrection of jesus as we enter into the season of land today it is a time of grace that offers us an opportunity to come to terms with the human condition especially with our relationship with god with others and with our own self land must be seen as a time to open the doors of our hearts a little wider and understand our lord a little more deeper so that as we celebrate the paschal mystery on that easter night it will be an opportunity to receive the overflowing grace god has to offer to all of us the readings this evening dear friends brothers and sisters orient us towards this season of land the first reading from the book of joel offers beautiful insights the prophet joel describes an event called the day of the lord a day associated with judgments and destructions to avoid the consequences the prophet joel tells his community to perform outward expression of moaning and weeping these sections dear friends enable people to correct and to focus on how to improve the relationship with one another and with god and that is what we are doing as we enter into the season of land receiving the ashes on the forehead of each one of us is a sign of each one of us embarking on this solemn journey a period of conversion and a time of repentance is a beautiful time for us to really do something to better ourselves and to come back to the lord an invitation that's given to all of us dear friends the ashes that will be put on your forehead today reminds all of us to be introspective and to behave in a way that nurtures a relationship that builds relationship that appreciates relationship with god with people and with the self the conversion of heart dear friends is an urgent invitation to return to encounter the lord and the second reading tells us that we are privileged because jesus has come and has died for us if we don't need to worry too much because we have been given that opportunity the privilege to return you and i must grab the opportunity to come back to the lord you find this is a beautiful invitation the kind of things that been given to us you can't find anywhere else in human relationship but this god creates time creates opportunity creates possibility for you and me to come back to him to be embraced with his love and mercy and this is beautiful this is a wonderful time for each one of us dear friends you find that as we come to celebrate this day with ashes being imposed on our forehead i think it tells us of three things and i want you to take back these three things simple straightforward it is a time to remember remember that you are a sinner [Music] remember that we are vulnerable remember that we are weak remember that we are fragile in god's eyes in his kingdom in this world we are fragile we need him we are sinners and ash wednesday just tells us that it's a moment to remember that we are truly in need of god secondly ash wednesday tells is a day of decision a decision that we will make that we want to return to god we want to come back to him this is how the first reading tells us the community that they came back to the lord and we are deciding today that we want to come back to come back to him and lastly dear friends it's a time to receive what will we receive we will receive the beautiful salvation that god in jesus has trusted and promised us this whole journey of 40 days with the imposition of ashes reminding us that we are sinners it's a decision at the end of the day the reward is that you and i are moving towards this road to salvation god saves us god cleanses us god forgives us and it's only possible if we are with him opening our hearts in repentance opening our hearts in forgiveness for and in him so dear friends brothers and sisters they say seasons come and seasons go land come and land goes either we take it and make it a difference or we can just make it as a passing 40 day in our hearts and lives make a difference dear friends you know pope francis has said it is about fasting from something and moving towards something maybe for all of us today as we come to begin this season of land what would be the first three things that you want to fast from fasting is not just about food fasting is about coming back praying is about coming back arms giving is about coming back what you like to fast from maybe three beautiful things you can do for the lord and three things that you want to get from the lord in this moment of grace of 40 days to grow in the grace that will make us truly people of god opportunities given [Music] not taken is lost forever 40 days given make a difference let's come back to the lord celebrate easter night with hearts fervent in his faithfulness true in his love and walking in peace with him and with one another amen so dear friends brothers and sisters we will now have the blessing of the ashes after which we will have the distribution and the imposition of ashes on your forehead dear friends as i call you to come forward as how you come to receive communion from behind coming forward to receive from the commune ministers and from me and from brother i ask you deep in your heart just don't come but try to make that kind of decision that you want to change the kind of receiving of the beautiful grace of salvation and the beautiful thing about this is it's a personal journey but this personal journey has to do with every one year present let's pray for one another as we bless these ashes as this ashes is being imposed on our forehead a sign that we are with the lord and the lord is with us please stay dear friends brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless this abundance of his grace these ashes which he will we will put on our heads in penitents let us pray oh god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of prayers lend your mercy full year to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lantern observance they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son to our lord jesus christ who lives and reigns with you in the one spirit forever and ever amen please be seated dear friends ministers of the holy communion please come forward so dear friends they will use the cotton bud and place it on your forehead every person with a new cotton bud and you come prepared to receive those ashes with faithfulness and commitment repent and believe in the gospel remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return okay so so so [Music] god of mercy [Music] father let me go [Music] let me [Applause] [Music] help me not to see it again [Music] for mercy let me not implore invade all my sins [Music] [Music] again [Music] let us all stand dear friends brothers and sisters let us offer the prayers that are deep in our hearts as we begin this 40-day journey to be with the lord to pray for one another and to better ourselves in his eyes for the church that our pope bishops and clergy by their lantern preaching may inspire each of us to renew and deepen our relationship with god through acts of prayer fasting and charity we pray that the holy spirit will guide and strengthen them as they continue to help us have a deeper understanding of christ's suffering death and resurrection for our world that world leaders may come to understand that man does not live vibrate alone and seek by their laws a deeper meaning to life by reconciling all men to one another let us pray that they will listen to the subtle voice of the spirit of god calling them to integrity and peace for ourselves the ashes we receive today may remind us that our earthly lives are but transient and that our worldly possessions must not distance us from god and from one another we also pray for the grace to be humble enough to take the first step to reconcile with those whom we have hurt and those who have hurt us for our needs that during our lantern journey let us continue to seek christ in prayer fasting and arms giving knowing that he will grant the desires of our hearts in his name let us live up our needs and the needs of those who have asked for our prayers let us continue to ask mary our mother the mother the church the mother of each one of us to pray for us and for our family that we may truly be disciples of the lord bettering ourselves to become true disciple in his kingdom hail mary full of grace the lord is with you blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your jesus holy mary mother of god pray for sinners amen [Music] take me along use my life in the way [Music] [Music] this is is [Music] [Music] many times i have failed but i know you love me still teach me now me close to you always [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasure and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who leaves and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal fees with the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intend on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace and that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the holes and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] dear brothers and sisters a moment of grace and blessing as we pray the prayer of consecration whatever you are going through deep in you whatever the feelings that you have right now the difficulties and challenges pain bring it before the lord let the lord touch you maybe you may pray for you want to pray for someone pray and offer the person to the lord may grace blessing and healing come upon us you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at a time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me no mystery of faith [Music] until you come away and therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his dead and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that have helped us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and sebastian our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters we have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coerced to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ said to apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on
