weapons of self-restraint to our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and whipping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nation's ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was steered to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god be merciful oh lord for we have seen the [Music] have four years [Music] and your holy spirit take not from me [Music] me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustaining me o lord open my leaves and my mouth shall proclaim your praise for we have seen from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we employ you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i hear you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord [Music] the lord and more subversion oh shall i fear oh shall i fear the lord is [Music] [Music] if today you hear his voice harden not your hearts the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you lord jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give arms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that uran's giving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord christ you lord jesus christ my dear friends today we begin a new liturgical season that is the season of land 40 days of preparation it is a period of 40 days which begins today ash wednesday and ends on holy thursday when we enter the pascual tree dumb from holy thursday and in that paschal tridum we commemorate the last supper the crucifixion of the lord this pascual pascal tridum precedes the joyful easter season when the church celebrates the glorious resurrection of the lord and so in a way lenten season is a preparation for that easter season what makes this period significant we say that we always want change in our society but the question is do we want that change to start within in our own heart in the first reading we heard from the prophet joel the lord saying return to me with your whole heart with fasting weeping and mourning rend your hearts return to the lord your god and so this period of 40 days is a time of repentance of metanoia a time of change of mind a time of changing our decisions we are drawn to get our life right personally and as a community it is a time of significant change for our self a time of spiritual renewal jesus underwent a period he also underwent a period of prayer and fasting for 40 days in this desert and he battled with the enemy with the devil for catholic humans in the early days of the church the season of lent was a preparation for baptism at easter it was a time of purification through fasting almsgiving and prayer and a period of enlightenment through catechesis or the study of scriptures in the bible that is in the old testament repentance happened with dust and ashes men and women were dressed in sac clothes you read that from the from the first book of kings chapter 20 external realities were marks of repentance mourning and grieving for sins in parentheses on sundays we do not fast because it is a day of celebration or commemoration of the feast of the lord's resurrection today ash wednesday is a turning point for all of us who wants change not only for our society but the change within a turning point it is a point of life's movement a significant movement to our savior today reminds us as in the right of the distribution of ashes that on our death which we shall also come to unto dust we shall return unto dust we shall return but in christ is the promise of the rising to eternal life and so that dust and so that ashes find its new meaning in our life in our baptized life as we live our faith and our hope and love in the lord in christ from dust we shall rise up again with christ through his cross in this season the church requires fasting on ash wednesday and on good friday and on fridays that is fasting from food and abstinence from meat the law of fasting obliges one to have a full day a full meal during the day and two other smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal in the ancient times in saint augustine we do not fast just for the sake of fasting alone but what we gather from that fasting we give it unto the poor for their own for their benefit and so it is in a way self-giving we have heard from the gospel today in matthew chapter 6 verse 1 to 6 and 16 to 18 calling us to pray and give alms when you give arms jesus said do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your arms giving may be in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you in a certain way my dear friends this is telling us not to give absolute value to material things that shall pass away but to let go and to give materially especially to those who are needy in our in our solidarity with them as we see christ in the poor and it also gives prime value spiritual value of generosity and charity which is prime to christian life not give absolute value to what is to material things and in the gospel we also heard when you pray go to your inner room saint augustine said to pray with our in our inner self with our whole heart because it is from within starting from that decision of our heart that we return to god that we return to the lord in our heart christ is fully present and so we and so the gospel said pray to your father in secret and your father in secret will repay you saint paul whose life was moved by grace in christ such that he converted our lord said in a second letter to the corinthians chapter 5 we implore you on behalf of christ to be reconciled with god when we long for peace especially if we are if if somebody is our enemy and we long for peace we long to be reconciled to that person for us to have and to achieve that inner priest but saint paul tells us probably in our restlessness in our life not to be reconciled to man alone but to be reconciled with god our life in reconciliation with the lord for us to achieve the peace spiritual peace for our sake he made himself to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him we appeal to you saint paul said not to receive the grace of god in vain behold now is a very acceptable time now is the day of salvation the mortification of body my dear friends is a sign of conversion of the spirit what's important here is that we have this conversion especially of our soul this spiritual life marks our christian living hence we are called to read to reflect upon the gospel upon our scriptures pray and act let us feed on the word of god return and believe in the gospel and as i said act based on it let it be our food we don't need only this the physical food material food but above all we need that spiritual food to guide and illumine us in our earthly journey as christ said in john chapter 4 my food is to do the will of the father two great bishops in the early church one saint john chrysostom said we fast not for easter not for the cross but we fast for our sins beautiful we fast not for easter not for cross but for our sins and saint augustine said the truly great feast the one that engages all men is abstinence from iniquity i repeat abstinence from iniquity from sins and from the illicit pleasures of the world and this fasting my dear friends as practice in the church is accompanied by prayer and alms giving and so this forms a triad in our lenten journey the season of lent is an invitation for a healthy life for a healthy interior life and so we confess our sins to the sacrament of reconciliation my dear friends this season of lent prepares us as i said from the beginning for easter or the day of our resurrection and we have this this this interior journey as we prepare as well for our resurrection that is the new life in god through jesus christ but as we encounter jesus christ our lord and savior we are reminded like him to die to oneself to die to oneself for us this means to die in sin and to live a new life in christ to live a new life in christ the gospel said unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies it remains alone but if that grain of wheat dies it bears much fruit and so through this to dying to oneself from sin we can give ourself our life with joy and to others as we respond fully to our christian vocation for the glory of god and of god's kingdom and so we are called to die to oneself and accept christ's power his saving power that works in us we are reminded to that new life through conversion and spiritual renewal as you walk the path of true life in jesus christ amen we now follow with the distribution of ashes foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] i [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] be [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign oh [Music] [Music] [Music] let us all rise the penance of lent has begun the sign of the blessed ashes invites us to respond to the god who calls us to come back to him with all our heart let us bring before the father our desire for renewal and so we pray lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer that as we enter the season of lent we as a church may join christ in his act of sacrifice let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may discipline ourselves by fasting and self-denial let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may not close our eyes to the needs of the poor by practically almsgiving and create concrete generosity let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may seek the sacrament of penance especially in this season of grace and renewal let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we may show special care for the sake and those abundant by society let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the servant of god love community bishop be raised to the altar of the saints let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all the intentions and prayers offered by the pilgrims and devotees of senior santo nino let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for peace in our country and in the whole world let us pray to the lord r lord hear our right for all in direct patient care give them strength for their service let us pray to the lord r for all those isolated in their homes sustain them in joy and peace let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our decision makers at all levels send them your wisdom and good counsel to serve their communities let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those who have died because of the pandemic and those who grieve their loss in isolation comfort them in their sorrow let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god of mercy and compassion look upon the petitions of penitent people may the ashes we receive today truly symbolize our commitment to do your will may our self-denial express our desire to die to self that we may live your divine life in us more fully we ask this through christ our lord amen we are all for our lives [Music] for it's jesus [Music] is [Music] that we tell you [Music] [Music] see [Music] [Music] his glory [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord save sacrifice through hands with the raising glory of his name for good and the good of all his solid church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may we become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them out to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is righted yes it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with the angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without and we acclaim [Music] [Music] the sun [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jew fall so they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our po who see our bishop and all the clergy remember also brothers and sisters who are falling asleep in the hope of their resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with the blessed apostles and all the saints of pleasure throughout the ages we may merit to be cool ears to eternal life and we praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teachings we dare to pray [Music] [Music] the cities [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy
