to life the church calls upon his sons and daughters scattered throughout the world to come together to watch and to pray if we keep the memorial of the lord's paschal solemnity in this way listening to his word and celebrating his mysteries then we shall have the sure hope of sharing his triumph over death and living with him in god let us pray o god who through your son bestowed upon the faithful the fire of your glory sanctify this fire we pray and grant that by these paschal celebrations we may be so inflamed with heavenly desires that with minds made pure we may attain festivities of unending splendor we make this prayer through christ our lord the corn celebrants will first light their candles from the easter candle and later share the light of christ along the central island it will then be passed on to the whole congregation on the first pascal night god's people were guided by a column of fire as they began their journey to the promised land we too are guided by the light of christ in our journey through life to each intonation of christ our light we will respond thanks be to god the exalted or easter proclamation is then solemnly sung this magnificent lyric expresses in poetry the profound symbolic meaning of the paschal mystery of easter of god's great deeds of mercy and of our redemption from the sin of adam and of all the graces god lavished upon us may the light of christ rising in glory dispel the darkness of our hearts and our minds exalt let them exert the host of heaven exalt let angel ministers of god exalt let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud a mighty king's triumph be glad let earth be glad as glory floods earth ablaze with light from her eternal king let all corners of the earth be glad knowing an end to gloom and darkness just it is truly writing just with ardent love of mind and heart and with devoted service of our voice to acclaim our god invisible the almighty father and jesus christ our lord his son his only begotten go for our sacred adam's death to the eternal father and pouring out his own dear blood wiped to clean the record of our ancient sinfulness these then are the feast of passover in which is slain the lamb the one true lamb whose blood anoints the dopposto of believers this is the night when once you let our forebears israel's children from slavery in egypt and made them pass dry so hard through the red sea [Music] this is the night that with the pillar of fire banished the darkness of sin this is the night that even now throughout the world sets christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin leading them to grace and joining them to his holy ones this is the night when christ broke the prison bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld our birth would have been no gain had we no lord be in redeemed oh wonder of your humble care for us o love or charity beyond all telling to ransom a slave you give away your son o truly necessary sin of adam destroyed completely by the death of christ oh happy fold that turned so great so glorious a redeemer oh truly blessed night worthy alone to know the time and our when christ rose from the underworld this is the night of is written [Music] the night shall be as bright as them dazzling is the night for me and full of gladness the sanctifying power of this night dispels weakenedness [Music] washes restores in essence to the fallen and joy to moana's [Music] drives out hatred forced as concorde and brings down the mighty on this your night of grace o holy father accept this scandalous soul i'm offering the work of bees end of your servant's hands an evening sacrifice o praise this gift from your most holy church but now we know the praises of this payload which glowing fire ignites for god's honor a fire into many flames divided yet never dimmed by sharing of its light for it is fed by melting wax drawn out by mother beast to build a toad so precious oh truly blessed night when things of heaven are wear to those on earth and divine to the human therefore lord we pray you that this scandal hello to the honor of your name may persevere undeemed to overcome the darkness of this night receive it as a pleasing fragrance and let it mingle with the lights of heaven may this flame be found still burning by the morning star [Music] the one morning star who never said christ your son who coming back from death's domain has shed his peaceful light on humanity and lives and rings forever my dear brothers and sisters we are now about to begin our solemn vision let us listen with quiet hearts to the word of god let us meditate on how god in times past saved his people and in these last days has sent his son as redeemer let us pray that our god may complete this paschal work of salvation by the fullness of redemption kindly sit we now come to the second part of tonight's visit the liturgy of the word there will be two readings from the old testament and two from the new testament the first reading is taken from the book of genesis the reading tells us of the creation passover a passing over from darkness to light from nothingness to life from chaos to creation this reading will be proclaimed in hindi is thanks be to god [Music] oh [Music] together [Music] bless the lord o my soul o lord my god how great you are clothed in majesty and honor wrapped in light as with a rope [Music] you set the earth on its foundation immovable from age to age you wrapped it with the depths like a cloak the waters stood higher than the [Music] mountains [Music] you make springs they flow in between the hills from the branches they sing their songs [Music] from your dwelling you water the hills [Music] you make grass grow for cattle plant to solve man's need that he may bring forth bread from the earth [Music] how many are your work so lord in wisdom you have made them all the earth is full of your creatures [Music] bless the lord o my soul [Music] is let us pray oh god who wonderfully created human nature and still more wonderfully redeemed us we pray to set our minds against the enticements of sin that we may merit to attain eternal joys we make this prayer through christ our lord amen the second reading is taken from the book of exodus the second reading tells us about the passing over of the israelites from bring slaves in egypt to freedom it reminds us of our own passing over from sin to sonship a reading from the book of exodus in those days the lord said to moses why do you cry to me tell the people of israel to go forward lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it that the people of israel may go through the sea on dry land and i will harden the hearts of the egyptians so that they shall go in after them and i will get glory over pharaoh and all his hosts his chariots and his horsemen and the egyptians shall know that i am the lord when i have gained glory over pharaoh his chariots and his horsemen then the angel of god who was going before the host of israel moved and went behind them and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them coming between the host of egypt and the host of israel and there was the cloud and the darkness and it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night then moses stretched out his hand over the sea and the lord drove back the sea by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land and the waters were divided and the people of israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left the egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea all pharaoh's horses his chariots and his horsemen and in the morning watch the lord in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the egyptian forces and threw the egyptian forces into a panic clogging their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily and the egyptians said let us flee before israel for the lord fights for them against the egyptians then the lord said to moses stretch out your hand over the sea that the water may come back upon the egyptians upon their chariots and upon their horsemen so moses stretched out his hand over the sea and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared and as the egyptians fled into it the lord threw the egyptians into the midst of the sea the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen all of the host of pharaoh that had followed them into the sea not one of them remained but the people of israel walked on dry ground through the sea the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left thus the lord saved israel that day from the hand of the egyptians and israel saw the egyptians dead on the sea show israel saw the great power that the lord used against the egyptians so the people feared the lord and they believed in the lord and in his servant moses then moses and the people of israel sang this song to the lord saying i will sing to the lord for he has triumphed gloriously the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea [Music] is [Music] together i will sing to the lord glorious his triumph the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea the lord's my strength my song and my salvation my father's god i will praise and exalt [Music] i will say the lord is a warrior the lord is this thing pharaoh's chariots he cast into the sea [Music] pharaoh's army he cast into the sea his chosen officers were sunk in the red sea i will [Music] the floods cover them they went down [Music] they went down into the depths like a stone your right hand lord in power your right hand roar shatters the enemy [Music] is place o lord which you have made for your ago [Music] the sanctuary lord which your hands have established the lord will reign forever [Music] is let us pray oh god who by the light of the new testament have unlocked the meaning of wonders worked in former times so that the red sea prefigures the sacred font and the nation delivered from slavery foreshadows the christian people grant we pray that all nations obtaining the privilege of israel by merit of faith may be reborn by partaking of your spirit we make this prayer through christ our lord [Music] the vigil service now reaches a significant stage a more festive and joyous atmosphere is created by lighting the altar candles and by the sound of joyful bells his eminence will begin the gloria with an intonation gloria in excelsis day oh [Music] [Music] glorious praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify [Music] oh [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] [Music] received [Music] have mercy on us [Music] is [Music] [Music] you jesus christ [Music] [Music] foreign let us pray o god who made this most sacred night radiant with the glory of the lord's resurrection stir up in your church a spirit of adoption so that renewed in body and mind we may render you undivided service through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever home the first reading from the new testament is taken from saint paul's letter to the romans sin paul reminds us that through our baptism we have died with christ to our sins and risen to the new and transformed life of grace that christ gives us foreign [Music] [Music] please rise as his eminence intones the solemn alleluia it joyously proclaims christ's triumph resurrection ah [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] is is [Music] oh why the lord has this [Music] oh [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to saint mark glory to you lord when the sabbath was passed mary magdalene mary the mother of james and salome bought spices so they might go and anoint him and very early on the first day of the week when the sun had risen they went to the tomb and they were saying to one another who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb and looking up they saw that the stone had been rolled back it was very large and entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side dressed in a white robe and they were alarmed and he said to them do not be alarmed you seek jesus of nazareth who was crucified he has risen he is not here see the place where they laid him but go tell his disciples and peter that he is going before you to galilee there you will see him just as he told you the gospel of the lord thanks your jesus christ my dear brother bishop savio my dear fathers my dear religious sisters and brothers and sisters in jesus today's liturgy today evening's liturgy is full of symbolism the cathedral was darkened to the extent possible at the beginning and the candle was brought in symbolizing christ from the candle of last year 2020 the candle of 2021 was lit civilizing continuity continuity of perhaps also of the pandemic christ is the light of the world that was the theme of the beautiful exul death sung by bishop savio proclaiming the beauty of the night the glory of the light and the redemption which christ came to give us there is darkness all over to a large extent violence acts of terrorism sometimes wars anger hatred disharmony among communities discord in families but our big problem for all of us now is the pandemic yesterday there were close to ninety thousand cases new cases in india showing the pandemic once again is making a surge and everybody doctors administrators governments are in a state of darkness wondering what to do a state of confusion a state shall we say of hopelessness and in this stage of darkness comes the light of christ that is the meaning of today's feast the meaning the essential message of today's feast of the easter vigil christ is the light of the world the darkness cannot overwhelm us reading the account of the resurrection in all the four evangelists matthew mark luke and john today we read mark because this is the year of mark you get a fairly good idea of what happened on that first easter night the three ladies mary magdalene salome mother of j mary mother of james ran to the tomb not with hope they went to their tomb out of love because they were sad that jesus had died depressed distressed they took spices to go and once again embalmed the body of course their big problem was who will roll the stone away but they did not allow that to deter them from running to the tomb so they rushed to the tomb and as they rushed the tomb was open they peeked inside saul got the message that he has risen jesus appeared to be magdalene and said tell my brothers that i'm going to galilee tell them to go there i will see them there and so they ran and told the 11 apostles and the other disciples our lady must have been present with them the one who was perhaps among the most depressed of the lord was peter three years he had been with the lord with the master three years he had done everything he could and the lord had appointed him as it was leader and he was a spokesman right through and now the master had died was crucified sure he was greatly depressed but also greatly distressed and upset that he had betrayed the master because three times he had denied him during the trial as jesus had foretold there was darkness in peter's life also very great darkness and yet when these three of them came and said we saw jesus and they said he is not in the tomb he didn't allow the darkness to overwhelm him he ran began running ran to the tomb to try and see what exactly situation was mind you from the gospel passages doesn't appear that he thought our lord had risen but he knew something strange had happened they didn't take the message of these three individuals seriously but the darkness did not allow him to be depressed because he was running towards christ and evidently a little later was the younger and more athletic john who then began to again want to run to jesus and the gospel passage tells us we'll read it tomorrow morning when we have the morning mass that john overtook peter but he didn't enter the tomb out of respect because peter was the leader so the two of them were the only ones who did not allow their darkness their depression to depress them so much they did not go to jesus and that i think is the message once again to us we all have darknesses in our lives darknesses of feelings of guilt like peter had darknesses of depression this pandemic has brought great difficulties to benefit people lack of security financially sickness death perhaps of a close friend job unsure salaries cut difficulties of paying medical bills confusion about the education a great amount of depression darkness but this darkness should not allow us to be completely depressed and paralyzed into inaction as some of the apostles were like peter and john we should run to jesus know that we are a resurrected people that we are practitioners of the resurrection because jesus has risen and he's brought light to the world that again is the message the boulder was there between the women and the tomb and jesus inside the tomb the boulder was there between peter and john and jesus whom they thought was in the tomb but when one runs to jesus the boulder is always taken away jesus makes sure that if you want to go to him no boulder will come in between you and him no guilt feeling no darkness no depression no financial difficulties no relationship problem will come trust in jesus he is risen the easter the message of easter is that christ is risen that he has overcome death yes goodness has overcome evil justice has overcome injustice that light has overcome darkness for all of us disciples of jesus this is the message this is the guarantee by jesus rising from the dead he has overcome death and as we light our candles from that candle as we make our baptismal promises we get courage from him to live lives of hope we cannot be people without hope people of despair easter must bring hope a hope that is not just a hope of an uncertain future but a hope that is a conviction that we have the victory that god is with us that no matter what we will come out victorious this pandemic is troublesome for everybody but it will be overcome it will pass but we you and i are called as disciples of jesus to see how we could alleviate the sufferings of others to see how we could be as pope francis told us people of solidarity working together helping each other to see how our own mission which we have of planting god's kingdom carries on in these circumstances a happy easter to you that all of us put into our hearts into our minds our hearts more and more the hope the courage the confidence of easter so that we can live lives of peace of truth and of justice god bless you and happy easter to each one of you we now begin the third part of the visual service the liturgy of baptism the cardinal will first bless the baptismal water to be used in the easter season and next lead us in the renewal of our baptismal promises there will be no sprinkling of holy water over the congregation can you stand my dear brothers and sisters let us humbly beseech the lord our god to bless this water that he had created may graciously renew us that we may remain faithful to the spirit which we have received lord our god in your mercy be present to your people who keep vigil on this most sacred night and for us who recall the wondrous work of our creation and the still greater work of our redemption graciously bless this water for you created water to make the fields fruitful and to refresh and cleanse our bodies you also made water the instrument of your mercy for through water you freed your people from slavery and quench their thirst in the desert through water the prophets proclaimed the new covenant you were to enter upon with the human race and last of all through water which christ made holy in the jordan we have renewed our corrupted nature in the bath of regeneration therefore may this water be for us a memorial of the baptism we have received and grant that we may share in the gladness of our brothers and sisters who at easter have received their baptism make this pray through christ our lord [Music] amen we'll now have the renewal of baptismal promises the renewal of baptismal promises light your candles from the flame taken from the easter candle and passed on to you the light of christ's resurrection has conquered and dispelled the darkness of sin is my dear brothers and sisters through the paschal mystery we have been buried with christ in baptism that we may walk with him in the newness of life now that our lenten observance has concluded let us renew the promises of baptism by which we once renowned satan and his works and promised to serve god in the holy catholic church and so i ask you [Music] do you renounce satan i do i do and all his works i do and all his empty shows i do do you renounce sin so as to live in the freedom of the children of god i do i do do you believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth i do do you believe in jesus christ his only son our lord was born of the virgin mary suffered death and was buried rose again from the dead and is seated at the right hand of the father i do do you believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church communion of saints forgiveness of sins resurrection the body and life everlasting i do may almighty god the father of our lord jesus christ who has given his new birth by water and the holy spirit and bestowed on us forgiveness of our sins keep us by his grace in christ jesus our lord for eternal life amen my brothers and sisters as we joyfully celebrate the resurrection of the lord we pray to god for our world for ourselves our loved ones and for all who seek the joy peace and love of easter we devoutly present our petitions to our father in heaven your response will be [Music] lord [Music] let's pray for your own personal intentions god our father in your great wisdom and power you raised your son jesus seated him at your right hand as judge of the living and the dead grant your faithful people abundant grace to bear the fruits of your easter blessings of joy peace and love we make this prayer through christ our lord amen we now enter the fourth and final part of the easter vigil service the liturgy of the eucharist as the gift of bread and wine are brought to the altar we offer to god our very lives and our wholehearted commitment to become the mystical body of christ the light of the world [Music] [Applause] [Music] pray my brothers and sisters that your sacrifice and mine may be acceptable to god our father in heaven may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church except we ask you o lord the prayers of your people with the sacrificial offerings that what has begun in the paschal mysteries may by the working of your power bring us to the healing of eternity we make this prayer through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim your lord but on this night above all to lord you yet more gloriously when christ our passover has been sacrificed for he is the true lamb who has taken away the sins of the world by dying he has destroyed our death by rising restored our life therefore overcome with paschal joy every land every people exults in your praise and even the heavenly powers with the angelic hosts sing together the unending hip of your glory as they acclaim [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have creately created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and you make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your day therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith um [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and fill with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with your blessed apostles glorious martyrs saint joseph her spouse with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we
