wow that was good yes that was good good to see brian good to see nephew all of them sarah and the others but uh that is in the tradition of the black church and spend a few minutes on the black church because it's black history month number one but also i had an opportunity to and welcome uh thank you for joining us this morning we just jumped right into the conversation but uh i was just you know taking in the whole idea of just stan because the african-american experience is really a story about resilience under some of the harshest conditions and to emerge as a people and a part of american history because black history is american history yes it is uh it's just amazing so to celebrate it this month and and this is the month that revolved around abraham lincoln frederick douglass who who settled on this it wasn't like they didn't give us didn't intentionally give us the shortest month of the year by the way that wasn't white america no no um there was a process to come to that and you could look it up matter of fact but um just the style of music and and worship was important i was on a conference call this past week in preparation for a black history special that's coming on pbs on tuesday night and uh wednesday at 9 00 pm eastern standard time and it's called the black church and it was with professor henry lewis gates joshua dubois who was hosting it and some others and just talking about the history of the church you know in the christian church in black culture yeah because uh dr gates was saying that 450 000 uh african slaves were brought over wow to the united states starting around 1526 you know in terms of the large movement of of the slave trade and he said that eight to 23 of them were muslims and a another 20 were congolese catholics because the congo was the largest exporter of african slaves wow of black slaves and there were 50 different ethnicities of black culture that came to the americas in slavery six were dominant and out of those six dominant cultures emerge the african-american culture in america so it was not until the methodist church declared that slavery was wrong it was a sin that invited slaves and blacks into christianity so there was a great movement the great awakening took place but there's a great movement of of of african slave into christianity because of the rejection of uh slavery right and also uh african americans could relate to the exodus story yes right uh that whole thing of seeing god as the liberator of the oppressed and step forming them and establishing them as a people which was the expectation uh that's where the extreme view of hebrew israelites come out of yeah yeah yeah they took that but uh for the most part blacks took the exodus story they also identified with jesus as you know his his his life his his his death and his triumphal resurrection as a story to give them hope and to give them strength and and the black church you know did not look we didn't african americans didn't try to imitate white christianity what actually happened because of the context and history they created a parallel christian culture and the black church became the primary institution within the black community in fact the black church was the womb for african-american culture yeah it came out of the black church and that's why you know we need to make sure we stick to you know still bringing back some of the uh old spiritual negro songs because those were the songs that they would sing to get them through the day you know some of the and those were some steep and some hymns and some biblical texts uh you know that really made a mark in in that aspect of their resilience absolutely absolutely the the hymns had meaning they came up with their own hymns they came up with their own style of worship style of preaching yes it was ecstatic preaching it was an ecstatic worship because uh you know they came with an african spirituality that had a worldview that the universe was sacred all life was sacred so they came with that so that was foundational to the christianity that they built upon that and you know out of the black church again black church was the womb for for uh music for arts and entertainment because the black church nurtured nourished the arts and entertainment uh out of the black church came uh entrepreneurial pursuits black schools black banks so many things that came out of the black church so it was a very very important experience and we were talking in that meeting about this whole experience so on tuesday night and wednesday night again 9 p.m eastern standard time on pbs just check your local listings for what channel that is but pbs will present and dr gates incredible historian will walk us through the whole black church experience and i think that's looking forward to seeing that having kids sit down and watch some of that clip yeah i think the family should sit and and take a look at it and the way he does it it is not you know bashing you know one group of people it's examining the context and and all that was built into the experience and how african americans emerged strong and resilient and and and continued as a people which is you know that's that's the story that's what it's about and a lot of that was steep and they believed that god wanted them to be free yeah you know it was it was that was a big part of it you know you listen to a lot of the stories and you know it just they they really sought out the spirit of god the voice of god you know and and even in the actions to try to free themselves and understand in the black church uh it was the only space at that time during slavery right uh even segregation etc that blacks had affirmation celebration their self-esteem it was brother so-and-so sister so and so mother so-and-so elder so and so you know uh uh deacon so and so so there was a development of of respect that they didn't get from the dominant society or within the dominant society so it was it was a special space it was a safe space uh pew research did a study and the study said that to this day right this is a recent study a couple years ago that 80 percent of african americans attend black churches black denominational churches from um amy to church of god in christ and only 14 of african americans actually attend uh predominantly white evangelical churches and that is has been affected by the social political racial climate that we've seen you know over the last several years here in america and especially right now so it's it's it shows that the black church has continued as a solid institution in spite of all the changes and in terms of of social change and political change black church was at the forefront talking about the civil rights movement talking about all of these other movements that take place and also the black church elevated women you know it gave dignity and elevation to women and the role of women and that's still you know being debated you know in in some context but i mean it played such such an important role uh it gave affirmation as i said power and a sense of control that they didn't have outside so you know uh and that's why even you know our congregation is multicultural because the black the black community is not monolithic no no we're quite different you know you have republicans democrats conservatives uh liberals you have independents you know uh you have people across the board in terms of their ideas and opinions uh but we are an incredible people when it comes to a story of resilience and the story of of of restoration and coming back no matter how many times you know we were assaulted emotionally politically economically you know in in many different ways in america i'm sorry i just it's special and and that's why you know that just stirred in my heart uh the song stand you know uh to the story and also the style style of worship and that's why we we mix it up here i mean you do a great job in mixing up the old and the new the contemporary ccm music you know spiritual and and goss gospel music i think you'll do a great job thank you thank you talk about our music we had an amazing night with the youth ministry it took over ah yeah the worship night this past friday if you missed it you can see it on youtube amazing they did a great job had the step ministry come up so what age was that what age group that was uh the age of 13 to um about 18. okay yeah and then high school high school yep junior high school high school okay and it was it was just a great amazing time and that's that's important i mean that kind of thing you got a lot of participation as well yes yeah so thank you uh so you know today is uh valentine's day and i know from a christian perspective you know because you got the christians out there saying well it's not a holiday you know it's not you know this but it's something that you know i think it it shines a light on a necessity to really take time out to enjoy one another within that relationship it accentuates love and that's a good thing yes you know never mind the little baby with the arrow and the heart you know uh be my valentine when i was in elementary school we had to actually make you know arts and crafts we made products we made little cars to take home to our parents and things like that it's part of the culture and i think the things that are are are cultural customs and traditions that are good that speak about the culture and the values of the culture so valentine's day speaks of the value that this culture has yes for love and relationships and intimacy uh i think it's a good thing so as a question we're allowed to participate in it absolutely i mean yeah what are you doing what's wrong with uh getting flowers that i got for your mother and some chocolate covered strawberries you know what's wrong with doing that that's that's a that's that's great and you know you shouldn't have to wait until valentine's day but it's a nice occasion to do it to celebrate love and life and relationships yeah all right good to all you folks that that condemn it pray for me yeah god will deliver me from love because i ain't gonna be freed yeah so i'm excited you know i've got some time we don't have that much time left so let's get into the heart of the message no but today what we got to talk about dr frederick casey price yes which was sad sad you know uh regardless of what you feel about the faith message dr price was a giant yes in the kingdom of god and in the 1970s there was not a person of color like him on television bringing a christian message that was life's transformation no it wasn't you know he shifted the paradigm on how uh white evangelicals looked at black pastors yeah yeah right because at one point you know with a lot of the hoop and hollering the white um church i'm trying to you know be political uh you looked at it correct as as hype and not um developmental right so it didn't it disturbed but it it it inspired but then they transformed yeah and they didn't appreciate well yeah look again it goes back to black history black culture the style yep the hooping we never talk about hooping one day uh but yeah dr price you know he was a teacher and that's how he brought it and he impacted my life deeply in the life of so many deeply and he brought the spirit of excellence you know look whatever you say about the prosperity gospel the bible does speak about prosperity there are those who took it to the extreme yeah there's no doubt and we have to we have to weigh in on that too not today but suffice it to say um he was 89 years old uh he contracted covet yes and unfortunately it ravaged his lungs and his heart his heart and his kidneys and uh he died um officially uh friday night it was friday night so you know we we wish him and his family the best uh it's just uh he's just made a mark uh uh not only on uh america the american religious experience but the black religious experience he really really did so we celebrate his life and we appreciate all that he contributed and i'm praying for his son because you know i posted on instagram you know being a pastor of a prominent i mean being a son of a prominent pastor uh you're just looking at i said i pray for discernment i left it there because i understand that he has to discern who is here you know really to help you know what he's doing uh who's here to to with their own agenda uh how to navigate how to maintain my voice and not slip in trying to be my father right and yeah so i'm just really praying for him as well it's not easy because he has a big ship that he has to uh stare oh yeah oh yeah some big shoes that he has to fill and but that's why we're working on the book succession yep because we want to share our experience and we want to share with others and how effectively it has taken place the mistakes that we made along the way things that we learned and i think that's just so important because we haven't done succession well no as a people we haven't done it well in in in terms of church in terms of corporate america you know in many many ways we failed there are some great models along the way absolutely but not enough uh great models so man we first had i know i know a lot of a lot of stuff did we did we cover everything that we were supposed to cover i believe so uh in the events black church uh cicely tyson passed last week i had an opportunity when i was a teenager i was i was 17 years old and she was in a play called young gifted and black off broadway and me and a group of us from i was part of the methodist nyf methodist youth fellowship we we went and it was amazing the play was amazing she sat and spoke with us after the production was over one-on-one and just shared her life and her dreams and to see her consistently live out a set of values though she was in hollywood it's amazing yeah i got a chance to interact with her on several occasions you know throughout her career and just an amazing moment yeah it was just done it's sad so uh are we gonna pick up where we left off uh well yeah i just uh you got something else no i got a lot of questions but uh it'll take us off uh by track you know um because we're talking about prayer and we we talked the basis for effective prayer right just looking back at some of the notes we talked about reverence yep coming to god with a reverence attitude last week we spoke about obedience all right what was the feedback on that no that was it was amazing on the just the perspective of of really uh allowing that statement you said you know uh basically if you haven't obeyed prior to you praying you know what gives you know the the understand that you will obey after you pray yeah right so so the obedience prior to uh sets you know a standard you know and and i think that that really ministered to a lot of people good good i'm glad to hear that i want to touch on something and this won't take too long i want to break this down because when i went into the church remember i came from the nation of islam and and catholicism that was my history plus you know eastern religions um so i came to christianity i ended up in the pentecostal church and then the black pentecostal church experienced where i was ordained and there was a verse in psalm 66 18 and the way it was used because this is part of you know the basics to effective prayer all right yes there is obedience yes we start with reverence but also there's what's going on in your mind that may it's subtle because it can throw you off because the devil uses it against you and it's it's a misunderstanding of this particular text in psalm 66 18. in the king james version it says if i regard iniquity in my heart the lord will not hear me right okay and the word regard means to have a protective interest in something so in other words it gives the sense that if you're hiding sin right if you're trying to cover it up god's not gonna hear you but that's not what the text is actually saying all right and this is important because when you come to god maybe walk by faith all right not by sight we are people of faith just shall live by faith without faith it's impossible to please to please god right so we come to god with faith especially in prayer we come with faith so this this text is often misunderstood and it's better understood in the new living translation psalm 66 18 it says this if i had not confessed the sin in my heart the lord would not have listened what is david dealing with here and that's that's the important thing because if if you think it's that you're hiding sin that's not what it's talking about in other words if i come to god with condemning thoughts with the condemning due to unconfessed sin i am doubting god's forgiveness if i confessed it you understand what i'm saying satan's accusations of confessed sin or past failures can create such unbelief in our thinking that we're not even realizing how much it's affecting influencing when we come to god to prayer so we come to god with prayer right and satan is is is attacking you by reminding you of past failures all right or reminding you of sins that you've already confessed then you're coming with doubt unbelief and condemnation and that's what the text is actually saying if you come with condemnation in your heart you're coming with unbelief god's not going to hear that so so so there is a time where god won't hear our prayers if you're coming out yeah i mean there are times if if of course if we're hiding somebody says he that that covers his sin won't prosper so if we're hiding something absolutely that's going to interfere with the relationship i mean the same thing is true in in natural relationships yeah you know your child has done something they're trying to pretend it didn't happen you know you're waiting for them to do what fess up to own it to take responsibility for it because that's where they will grow so if they hide it that's going to be a problem in the relationship all right but if you've already forgiven them and they still feel reluctant to come to you now we're entered we've entered the realm of unbelief they don't believe that you've truly forgiven them so so they continue to to to operate under the weight of condemnation because you and i spoke about this and i wrestled with it because god being omnipresent right being everywhere uh how does he not hear and that is this anthropomorphic you know well no it's not that he can't hear like in the physical sense he's not listening hearing all right he's not giving it the kind of value that is necessary that's a very good question he's not giving it the kind of value that's necessary because it's covered it's being oppressed by your unbelief that he forgave you and then you can come back boldly remember the scripture says come boldly to the throne of grace grace so the throne is this position of power grace is what characterizes that throne oh throne is a position of power and grace is what characterizes that yeah it's not it's not a throne of condemnation it's not a throne of unforgiveness it's not a throne of guilt that that god heaps upon you no it's a throne of grace so you're coming in other words he has the power to forgive yes he has the power to reconcile he has the power to cleanse and that's how you come to him yes so so essentially david is saying here and i love uh if we can look at psalm 32 5 it says finally i confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt i said to myself i will confess my rebellion to the lord and you forgave me all my guilt is gone now let's go back to psalm 66 18. if i had not confessed the sin in my heart the lord would not have listened but god did listen he paid attention to my prayer praise god who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love which is what grace is unfailing love from me so david knew that in spite of any thoughts that would come his way to condemn him to point out past failures to make him feel that he was not forgiven by god all right he wouldn't he did not allow that mindset to reside in him as he approached god in prayer because if you do then you're going to shrink back you're not going to be bold you're not going to speak to god in faith in trust you're going to be very timid and he has not called us to stray back like that well i hope you're listening because i know pastor is speaking to somebody out there watching that is dealing with that whole mindset yeah if so if if in other words if i if if i come to god with condemning thoughts due to sin that i already confessed but the devil is keeps reminding me of right or my past failures all right then it's going to be difficult to be heard by god not in like god can hear you no doubt but to be valued in terms of what you're doing what you're engaging you're coming as an act of faith and faith is important all right because again we looked at the next verse david said but certainly god has hurt me he has attended to my voice because if you come with condemnation if you allow condemnation to rule when you're coming to god in prayer you're actually operating an unbelief you're saying god didn't forgive me yeah so these things are still on top of me i feel the weight of them i feel discouraged by them and the devil will do that he's the accuser of the brethren he wants to pile stuff up remember the very first sin that he presented to adam and eve yeah god god's holding back on you he knows that if you eat from that fruit you know you're going to be like him in other words god is unfair god is unjust and it's always the justice of god that that the devil tries to attack yes you take the man with the one talent right i know that you are hard man reaping where you have not sown in other words the master was unjust taking advantage and exploiting situations instead of being fair and just with situations that is always the way that the devil comes after us so if you feel that god is not fair or unjust you're not going to want to come to him right if you feel that god has not really forgiven you because the devil you keep allowing the devil to pile that up on your head on your because remember the battlefield of the is is the battle in the mind battlefield is the mind that's that's the place of the battle of faith it takes place in the mind so david refused to allow condemnation all right i love hebrews 4 16 it says come boldly to the throne of grace not the throne of condemnation it's the throne of grace and here's something important all right there is no limit to god's forgiveness um there's no limit to god's forgiveness god's mercy is infinite come on type type amen in the chat right now and i spoke to somebody type amen in the chat right now yeah and this is what jesus was trying to do when they came to him and said well how many times should i forgive yeah and jesus said 70 times 70. it wasn't like you count and get up to 490 times no no no it was simply using it hyperbolically to say that god's forgiveness is unlimited it is endless it's it is infinite because god is infinite and that's what peter was like please lord strengthen me yeah and remember we i shared with you uh oh man several weeks ago when you're haunted uh by the past and worried about the future it makes it difficult to experience the presence it's true in prayer because when you come to god and you allow the devil to keep condemnation upon you you're allowing him to haunt you with your past a past has already been forgiven and cleansed now is it always a devil or is it ourselves also remind ourselves well he uses that you know he uses it okay so whatever he can find remember he plays with the mind all right and tries to influence thoughts he just throws them you know we got this that's why it's called a fiery dot he just throws the thought at you so yeah how does that happen what's going on so well i like that you know there's something else i want to touch on um as well as we think about prayer and i reflected on this because i think about how i can equip you in your walk with god right in your spiritual life and especially when it comes to prayer prayer is not a substitute for the patterns principles and precepts that god has put in place so that we can experience a successful life okay all right think about this and you got to repeat that prayer is not a substitute for the patterns principles and precepts that god has given us for successful living all right there are patterns principles and precepts that govern everything finance relationships health our relationship with god spirituality they're there and too often we want to use prayer as something magical all right i'm just going to pray and god's going to take care of it like that weight loss pill yeah like that weight loss yes right think about this as i as i as i reflected on this right i thought about after the flood all right the flood was a cataclysmic event and now god is talking to noah and preparing him for renewal the renewal of the earth the renewal of civilization the repopulation of the earth a new beginning yes right he had just come through a a 2 000 year period right not noah himself but the earth and humanity has just come through a 2 000 year period how do you know it's 2 000 years we can approximate you got adam lived 960 years you've got you you've got methuselah who lived you know close to a thousand years and and then other generations after that so there's about two thousand years of human history there called the anti-diluvin period and within that period of time all right it was creation that established certain principles certain laws certain a certain order of things and humanity used it right yeah it was it was when uh uh cain went off and his sons began to establish uh uh herding cattle uh metallurgy right mining uh music all of these things that create civilization if you read genesis chapter four it tells you that that's where it all started right with the offspring of cain so they learned farming the laws of sowing and reaping and harvest and all of these things came into play and were present within that 2000 year period and noah was very familiar with these with these laws these precepts and these patterns and principles right so what's the first thing that god says to him when he is now relaunching the human race relaunching the earth he says to him in genesis chapter 8 verse 22 as long as the earth remains there will be planting and harvest cold and heat summer and winter day and night what is god saying he's not saying okay noah now we're going to start all over and whatever you ask me i'm going to do it for you no he says to him all of the systems and structures he reaffirms creation he reaffirms the created order he's saying noah all of this because look that kind of a flood was a disruption in the systems and order that god placed in creation so noah's like you've never seen anything like this all right so it was a disruption so the first thing that god does is reassure him that look all of the systems order principles patterns precepts that you relied on to navigate human society all right and to navigate life i am telling you that they are secure they are in place so you can depend on them how was he going to feed unless there would be this order of things unless he can depend on harvest time hot and cold winter summer so what was god giving him he was giving him an understanding that the most important thing that's foundational to his success in life is these principles these patterns uh these precepts yeah yeah so often you know we don't want to manage our money we just want to pray for god to give us a miracle give me an injection of cash jesus we don't want to manage we don't want to say well okay what are the principles that govern how i should manage my money what are the principles and how we should manage relationships we want to jump in a relationship blindly i talk and teach about the progression of relationships that begins with introduction then acquaintance then building a friendship then it goes to intimacy and too often we go from introduction to intimacy and wonder why the relationships collapse no there is a pattern there is a process the law of sowing and reaping the whole idea when jesus says give and it shall be given you all right press down shaken together shall men give into your bosom so there's something in the universe that is a law of reciprocity that when you give something comes back in return to balance the equation the universe is about balance balance is the key to life and that's why when someone does something for you you feel this need to to repay them even if it's just saying thank you maybe not giving them something because then you go back and forth trying to give each other no no you feel this obligation right so there's something that's built into the universe and the psyche of the human person that keeps that transaction going yeah yeah that's good it shall be going so and you shall reap there was a statement i remember who said it they said uh a person the difference between uh a millionaire who worked for it and the millionaire uh that received the money is that the person who worked for it will always be a millionaire even if they have zero dollars in their bank account because they understand the laws necessary to build the millions of dollars compared to the person who just received it they never re acquired the laws and the principles and precepts all the things that are needed to build that million so if i lose it i have the knowledge and the wisdom to build it again you can get it back you can better absolutely you know i and that's a good example because how many hit the lottery yep all right or mega millions more in debt than they started out before they bought that ticket they end up in in in counseling yep because they don't know how to manage that you know and what happens is if you're infused with a large amount of cash either you grow to the place of managing that cash or that cash is going to diminish to your place of knowledge and your level of understanding because you're going to squander it so beyond just praying folks and wanting god to just come and magically cure and solve all your problems all right there is what we do our responsibility to learn grow contribute learn and grow in knowledge of those laws that govern this world in which we live and all the things that we have to deal with there's no success without putting the work in you got to do the work yep gotta do the work wow so so much on prayer yes yes yes so you got it you got uh reverence humility uh obedience yeah yeah right yeah all the subject matters yes you know yeah without condemnation when you go in prayer it's got to be without condemnation how do you get rid of the condemnation you confess unconfessed sin and once you do that you believe that god has forgiven you and that he has cleansed you from that unrighteousness you can go to him freely like a child going to that parent knowing that parent loves them that parent has the power to answer to respond to their need right and there's nothing hindering nothing between them and that parent yeah yeah that's good our father yes god in heaven and we'll get to that in heart in heaven part yeah because even in that he he he gives us a commandment to forgive and ask for forgiveness absolutely absolutely so hope you got something out of that yes yeah amen amen you're the prayer man pray a man right here wow hallelujah lord holy o lord bless you lord bless your father bless you but before we even get to the prayer uh if you're watching this and you you've been either watching for a couple of weeks or somebody invited you to watch this and you're saying wow i've i've i've one i have never approached the throne of grace because i don't know uh jesus you know as my personal and savior i never i don't have that access um to him uh you know and it because the sinner's prayer or the altar call or whatnot but and this is the altar so but uh if you're watching this and you're you're you're saying i'm a sinner um i've fallen short uh which you know we all do but i'm talking about to the individual right now that's watching and and either had a relationship with god uh but left that relationship uh with god or who's watching this and never entered the relationship with god i want to pray with you i i want to ask you to if you pray with me enter into this prayer uh with me uh because i believe that god wants to work with you to change amen amen you've tried everything else you've tried alcohol you've tried the drugs you've tried you know uh uh sex you've tried all the things that you know line up to where you think you can find happiness i'm telling you if you really seek first the kingdom of god if you really seek god in the face of god you will not leave him transformed and i want to pray with you so if you buy your heads hallelujah lord father god thank you so much for the opportunity to pray for these individuals that are watching these individuals that are are their hearts been stirred by the worries that doctrine i have spoken or even something that was sung throughout the praise and worship segment maybe something from the the offering segment from the announcement lord whatever it is that you use because of how good you are and how mighty and sovereign you are that you don't diminish the little to change somebody's life right here i pray and actually just to anoint them touch them from the crown of their head they sow their feet lord we pray for you to reduce and remove help them in their mindset to not come to this thorn of grace condemned self-condemnation yeah if you're saying this and i want you to pray with pray with me this prayer father god i'm yours everything i'm not everything i am i'm completely yours my good my bad my ugly i surrender to you right now i believe that you sent your son to live to die and to rise again for me personally for my sins past present and future hallelujah so i surrender this to you and i believe in jesus christ i believe he died for me i believe that he's sitting on the right hand of the father talking to god about me have your way lord i surrender and i am yours amen amen if you prayed that prayer and if you you entered into the family believers we would just want to say welcome amen you know welcome and i reacted to you the text saved at six three one two five zero six two six eight eight once again at six three one two five zero two six eight eight and if you can you rather call please call this number at 718 306 one zero six one amen once again welcome welcome welcome yeah and let me just add to that you know the prayer we pray in a moment of time but christianity is a journey that nourishes you for the rest of your life yes that's your reality you're going to grow in it learn have your ups and downs etc but it begins with that decision that you prayed them into so thank you and don't get discouraged along the way because now you have to figure out how do i live out this christian life that's why the church is there that's why books that's why music that's why tv and all of these platforms that you can nurture that spiritual life uh as a christian amen amen good stuff man thank you uh father god we thank you for this opportunity to worship you thank you for the message that dr nard spoke about prayer and so right now lord we ask fully for com for forgiveness for the things that we were holding on to and repeatedly asking forgive for forgiveness we let it go right here right now lord i pray and ask that you just watch over us protect us throughout this week so that we will have a prosperous week one representing christ in culture glorifying god so we ask that you have your way anoint us afresh to be about our father's business so father you are our guiding guarding individual in our lives and we surrender our lives to you so we place in your hands and we act that you have your way into this precious precious name amen amen that confession of repentance is so important because it's something that we continually do yes because whatever you fail to repent of you're destined to repeat and you'll repeat it at a more damaging level yes the next time yep so it's about keeping the conscience clear and that's where freedom is a clear conscience that's the place of freedom and that's what god wants for you so thank you for joining us yes thank you thank you and until
