the nominees for Best Actress in a Broadway musical are Angela Lansbury dear world maria colonel over in Zorba Dorothy Loudon the fig leaves are falling and Jill O'Hara promises promises and you're all only wonderful the winner is Angela lamb [Applause] [Music] [Music] gave me a couple years ago [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] funny you never really dare believe that this moment is it's going to happen so you're never really prepared this is a glorious honor and I'm deeply grateful for all of you who have given it to me thank you the winner is Angela Lent you know you've no idea what this means I just never thought it could happen again I must express my gratitude to Arthur Lawrence Steve some time Julie's time and miss Ethel Merman for creating one of the most memorable memorable shows in Broadway history in 1959 and for making it possible for us to recreate gypsy in 1974 bye-bye birdie and returning to Broadway this fall in its fifth if mr. Dick Van Dyke [Music] thank you whenever this time of year rolls around there's always someone who says competition among artistic folk for awards is a little silly I don't agree with that but it's apparent that in most cases the decisions are very very tough to make and I'd like to suggest that one of the factors of adds to the toughness of the choice and certainly to the splendour of the season is the splendid and magnificent diversity of the characterizations presented listen to this list of nominees the nominees for outstanding performance by an actress in a musical are Tova felsham who learned to cope with one husband and the ghost of another sr Avadh Angela Lansbury of Sweeney Todd who gleefully and maniacally in chances with her freshly made worst pies in London Dorothy Loudon of ballroom who showed us that a woman of spirits and will and determination can renew her life with some hope Alexis Smith a platinum whose ruby queen making a comeback learned to rock and roll right along with the best of them and the winner is Angela Lansbury [Music] oh these moments one wants the rehearses the minute than they arrived and where are you you're just in a sort of sea of wonder and excitement and exaltation to win this award is such a oh let me just tell you what a joy and what how proud I am to be part of an incredible production like Sweeney Todd to have a group of producers like I have a creative teams of such extraordinary talent and most of all a cast who I am close to every minute on stage who who are simply unbelievable at chorus of singers I have to tell you that they all of them have collectively contributed to my opportunity to win this cherished award and I thank them and I thank you with all my heart [Applause] the nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a play are Halle foot in dividing the estate Jessica Hines in the Norman conquests muhr in ireland in the reasons to be pretty Angela Lansbury and Blithe Spirit and Amanda Ruth in the Norman Conquest a new Tony Award goes to Angela Lansbury [Music] legendary Angela Lansbury becomes only the second actress in history to earn Awards [Music] [Applause] Oh [Applause] who would have thought [Applause] at this time in my life that I should be presented with this lovely lovely award I feel deeply grateful I can't believe that I'm standing here and what because I am standing here and some of you are sitting there I must take this moment to send my love and my congratulations to the other nominees in this category it wasn't fair bless your life thank you to all of my co-stars in life spirit our producer Jeff Richards everybody in concern they said it they put the party for the Tonys don't talk about anybody just tell how to say how you feel well you know how I feel I am the essence of gratitude and happiness and joy and being back on Broadway and being with all you Broadway eyes is the greatest gift in my old age that I can possibly imagine thank you for having me back you
