for Best Musical of a musical are Stephen Sondheim for company very back for the Rothschilds Gary William Friedman for the me nobody knows and the winner is Stevenson um it's odd how there's never been a Tony Award for an Orchestrator and there's no score on Broadway that exists without orchestration and in my opinion the most brilliant orchestrations ever made on in musical theater are those of Jonathan Tunick for company and I want to share this with him also the Tony Awards used to give awards to conductors there's also no musical that works in any way without a conductor who keeps everything together and makes the music sound good so for Hal Hastings I'd also like to share this award with him and I never thought very highly of awards but I must say it's awfully nice to win Morton thank you excuse me but I just had to explain something to you before making this next presentation this award I know it may come as a shock to some of you but the performers do not make up the words while they sing along to the music no there is a man who does this for them and he is called a lyricist that marvelous now the nominations for the best lyricist of a musical are Stephen Sondheim the Tony Awards will reinstate those two categories they are among the most creative in the theater I'd also like to thank the theater as a profession I just thought as I was sitting there tonight or something that young playwright named David trainer said about the theater he said it's the only medium that acknowledges the presence of the audience and that's why we'll never die if you laugh at a movie screen or boo at a movie screen or anything the actors go right on they do exactly what they want to do same thing with the television but not the theater and that's why I'm proud to be in it Herman Sunday in the park with George music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and the winner is LoCascio poem thank you this award forever shatters a myth about the musical theater there's been a rumor around for a couple of years that the simple hummable show tune was no longer welcome on Broadway well it's alive and well at the palace in 1964 I got the chance to do my first Broadway musical and as an audience that had always been my favorite form of entertainment but I never realized sitting out there how much hard work it all is and we struggled through rehearsals and out-of-town learning the book and the score and the dances new songs being put in and some songs being taken out and when we finally opened in New York we were all exhausted but I have to say it was all worth it because the run of that show was six of the happiest days of my life that's you you hold this okay the nominees for Best Original Score that's music and lyrics written for the theater are into the woods music and lyrics Stephen Sondheim the Phantom of the Opera music Andrew Lloyd Webber lyrics lyrics Charles Hart and Richard still go romance romance music Keith Herman lyrics Barry Harman Sarafina music and Award is Steven sana this is a double pleasure because as most of you know the show that Lee was referring to her baptism and musical theater was anyone can whistle and I'm responsible partly for that running only six performances ah quickly I want to thank our producers for courage to put on into the woods and I want to thank one of the best ensemble casts that Broadway has ever known for surgery I want to especially thank my collaborator Jim Lapine not only for this show but for Sunday in the park with George and most important of all as many of you are aware what makes a score sound in the theater every night is the result at least of two extraordinary people in my case Paul Gemignani our conductor and Jonathan Tunick our Orchestrator and also Paul Ford Ariel's world's most in tireless rehearsal pianist and a walking memory bank of every song that has ever been written for any musical on any continent thank you and the nominees for Best Original Score are Disney's Beauty and the Beast music Alan Menken lyrics Howard Ashman and Tim Rice sir another musical music on Van Dyke lyrics lone Van Dyke Peter reeds Sheldon Harnick passion music and lyrics Stephen Sondheim and the Tony Award goes to passion um I want to share this of course with our three leads Donna Murphy and Jerry Shea and Marin mazzie no composer could ask for better singers and better actors ever and of course with Jim Alpine it's always a pleasure to do business with you James and particularly to Paul Gemignani our conductor Jonathan Tunick the extraordinary Orchestrator and Paul Ford the same indefatigable master of musical theater who knows every song ever written and plays them the same way and thank you very much please welcome the tony-winning featured actor for Evita Mandy Patinkin this year a special Tony Award for lifetime achievement was presented to Stephen Sondheim Stephen is unable to be here but he has asked me to say this thank you all but this award has to be shared with Julius Epstein arthur lawrence bert Chev love Larry Gelbart George Firth Jim Goldman John Weidman Hugh wheeler and James Lepine these are the men who created the characters that sang the songs the situations that gave rise to the songs and the criticism that improved the songs they were my collaborators they are called playwrights they invent they make whole cloth out of nothing they make a hat where there never was a hat and they don't just write musicals I would also share this award with Hal Prince but he has won already Lifetime Achievement has a deadly sound to it a ring of finality a faint whiff of you've outlived your usefulness and as you get older you start to believe that at least some writers do including me the problem is that the more venerable you get the harder it becomes to avoid the fear of not living up to the expectations and praise that are bestowed on you as in the form of a Lifetime Achievement Award nevertheless buoyed by your encouragement with more lifetime I or rather we promise you more achievement thank you all again you
